Past two weeks amid growing fears it could kickstart a regional conflict. Reporter back in gaza, the death toll has now soared to more than 5,000, hamas says, with thousands of children among the dead. Amid growing International Condemnation of the civilian deaths. The Israeli Military released graphic video of the massacre that unfolded here just over two weeks ago. Dash cam video said to be from a civilian car shows gunmen approaching the car and opening fire. A body cam recovered from one of the attackers shows a hail of gunfire. The bodies of the two victims slumped over, shot dead. In recent days, israeli commandos have mounted raids into gaza to attack targets and try to find out information about more than 220 hostages still held captive. The release of two more hostages tonight will come as a relief for their families. But to hamas, it may serve as a stalling tactic to slow down israels allout invasion. As was the case when the american hostages were released just a couple of days ago, there was a brief lull in air strikes. Today our colleagues in gaza tell us. But were also hearing tonight of a possible strike on the al shaty refugee camp killing a number of civilians. Thats according to the hamas health ministry. Norah. Charlie dagata, thank you. Also new today, a third convoy of trucks carrying muchneeded aid was allowed into gaza. But experts say its still not enough to stem the growing humanitarian crisis. Cbss imtiaz tyab reports from East Jerusalem that israel launched a rare air strike on a hamas target in the west bank. [ siren ] reporter the destruction here is near total. The Israeli Military said it targeted the alan sar mosque because hamas was using it as a, quote, terrorist compound. This is just the second time in 20 years that israel has carried out an air strike in the occupied west bank, and the fear now is that more is to come. In the apartment next door, the force of the air strike the israeli media says was from a fighter jet was so powerful it ble a hole through the adjoining wall. Its a place of worship, he says, like a church or a synagogue, not a place for fighters. Anger is only growing across the west bank, where 95 palestinians have been killed according to the Palestinian Ministry of health. But its in gaza where the death toll continues to spiral at a speed never seen before. Although the desperately needed convoys of humanitarian need have started making their way through egypt, each truck carries food for only around 4,000 people according to the wfp, nowhere near enough for gazas population of more than 2 million. As fears continue to grow for the safety of the up to 600 Americans Still trapped inside gaza, like emily rosh berger and her five children, who went there to visit her husbands mother. Theyre very scared. They just have lots of questions that are hard to answer, like when can we leave or why is this you know, why is it you know, why is all the bombardment happening to everybody . Reporter now, roshen berger says she feels left behind as americans in israel are evacuated home by the state department while she and her children remain trapped in gaza as the violence there only intensifies. Cbs mornings cohost Tony Dokoupil sat down with israels chief military spokesperson to talk about its dual mission rescue the hostages and eliminate hamas. Reporter as israeli air strikes pound targets inside gaza, rear admiral daniel ha gorys job is to explain the aftermath. When these pictures every day of women and children in the rubble, that doesnt help your cause. This is a tough fight, but it shows the face of hamas using the fwrks azans as human shield. Reporter israels chief military spokesperson says the war has two goals. One is to destroy hamas, leaders, infrastructures. And the other goal is to release the hostages. Reporter but for the families of the more than 200 people still held by hamas, hagori had little comfort. Can you at least tell them tonight that they are alive and that they are not being mistreated . I cannot tell them that. Were in a war, and our goal is to bring everybody home as long as it takes. Reporter that commitment to fight comes from evidence like this, he says. A note newly recovered off the body of a hamas attacker. This is what it says. The enemy is a disease that has no cure. Why was it so important for you to show it to us today . Because the world needs to understand its not an issue of palestinians and israelis. Its an issue of a crime against humanity. Reporter but there is also the crucial question of what comes after hamas, both for gaza and for the israelis. And on that, hagari said its and on that, hagari said its just too soon to tell. Reporter according to the cdc, in the ten years leading up to the pandemic, feelings of persistent sadness and hopelessness as well as suicidal thoughts and behaviors increased by about 40 while test scores, especially in math for grades four and eight, saw the biggest decline on record. While theres debate on whether technology, including phones, deserves much of the blame for these trends, social psychologist jonathan hite says its the only explanation. So it wasnt the pandemic that did this to us. This was all starting in the explanation anyone can offer for whie this happened all over the world is the phones. Reporter hite is the author of the coddling of the American Mind and started researching gen z in 2015 when cases of anxiety and depression started to rise. He says in 2010, most teenagers had flip phones they used for texting, a tool to help them connect in person. But between 2010 and 2015, smartphones changed the landscape, inundating people with notifications, group chats, and social media. Smartphones are basically kryptonite for learning. When children have a phone in their pocket and most schools say you have to keep your phone in your pocket, you cant use it during class, which is like saying in a drug detox clinic, you can keep your heroin in your pocket. Just dont shoot up. Dont shoot up. If kids have access to a phone, they will text. They will check their social media. They will not Pay Attention to the teacher or to each other in person. Reporter back at newberg free academy, students lock up their phones and leave them in the class room all day. The technology isnt new, but the company yonder estimates they saw a 150 increase in schools using them in 2023, which more than 2,000 schools participating. Its amazing to see kids come to school and not have to worry about that phone going off and a video being posted of them fighting in the bathroom or them being bullied by someone else on social media. Reporter assistant principal ebony clark says the pushback to remove phones was minimal, including concerns over safety. Theres an emergency, an active shooter. Were not dictating military terms to the Israeli Defense forces. Reporter waiting would give the u. S. And israel more time to negotiate the release of hostages, including at least 10 americans who are unaccounted for. Waiting would also give neighboring egypt more time to deliver food, water, and medicine to innocent palestinians. You view humanitarian aid getting there first as important . Whether or not theres a Ground Invasion, we believe that humanitarian assistance flowing to the people of gaza is critically important, and it needs to go as soon as possible and as much as possible. Reporter a delay would also buy time for more u. S. Troops to move into position as american bases in the region increasingly come under fire from suspected iranbacked militias. Just today, the pentagon announced the tenth such attack in the past week. Drone strikes on two u. S. Bases in syria. The pentagon already has about 10 ships in the region with roughly 9,000 sailors and marines on board.
