This is the latest shooting captured by a surveillance camera at the corner of georgia street and lorell avenue. The people inside a black car firing 17 shots at a white car driving away. It happened last friday night. No one was reportedly hurt. This neighborhood block captain called the police and offered the footage. A week later he says no one has collected the video. The block captain does not want to release his name fearing for his safety. The under staffed Police Department only comes out when someone is hurt. By then, too late. We dont want armed guards, just an extra pair of eyes Oakland Police say Violent Crime is up 21 this year compared to last. The counsel woman represents the district. She said aside from requesting more Police Patrols they may be able to hire Community Safety ambassadors to walk the streets. There is no one strategy that is going to be the end all solution but combining presence as well as presence from those out and about in the neighborhood. In this age of Technology Young students may be savvy on computers and tablets but some say it is time to take it back to the basics and relearn Cursive Writing, handwriting. The governor agrees, signing a law requiring schools to teach it 1st through 6th grade. Why is it important . Supporters say two reasons. There is a lot of benefit to having cursive back in our instructional practices because it activates a portion of the brain that does not occur in print and or typing. Tell me why it is important . I want to see students all have the same access to our history, really, it is our historical documents. Historical documents like the constitution for example which students may not be able to read without knowing cursive. It has not been a requirement since 2010.
