Plus, the great shakeout glitch, the text alert mistake that jolted people out of bed. And a Living Museum for thousands of rare roses. The bay area caretaker who is passionate about preserving the past. To share these roses and create a community of people who agree that this is a very Important Mission. This is cbs news bay area, with juliette goodrich. Hello, it is the last taste of summer, really, heat, before it will quickly start feeling a lot more like fall. It is another first alert weather day, the bay under heat advisory for another few hours. San francisco even got to the upper 80s today, but it has cooled off in the last few hours. Our inland hotspots will take a little longer to get relief. San jose was in the low 90s and tied a record today. Certainly a great day to spend the day in claro reservoir. Gil garcia and his friend went out on the boat, tubing and jet skiing. Running out of these hot days, we dont know when the last hot day will be, but we want to take advantage of them. Lets get it chief meteorologist paul heggen with the last of the heat and the dramatic cooldown coming our way. We are in for changes after a hot day, a taste of august in the middle of october. But we still get the early sunsets of october, the sun about to go down within 25 minutes or so. Lets look at the High Temperatures we experienced today. We did have a new record high set in san jose, 93 degrees, breaking the previous record of 91, made it well into the 90s in los gatos and morgan hill, above 90 and redwood hill, only 80s in fremont, low to mid 90s in land in the east bay, San Francisco and oakland, as expected, reached upper 80s, and Half Moon Bay made it into low 70s, a few degrees cooler than anticipated. It was pleasantly well along the coast. Farther north, also hot, napa set a new record high of 95 degrees, almost 90 in petaluma, and santa rosa and Sonoma County airport, a little ways northwest of santa rosa, set a new record High Temperature of 96 degrees this afternoon. We are not going to beat is hot tomorrow. Lets look at where High Temperatures will end up friday, compared to what is normal for the middle of october. Almost exactly average in San Francisco and oakland, almost a 20 degrees drop from today. Temperature is in land will still be fiveday degrees above normal, low 80s for most inland parts of the bay area, but some 70s wriggled in, too. Looking ahead to the weekend, in the full forecast. If you could swing it, the beach was a great spot to play hooky today, but unless you are a experienced surfer, it was probably safest to stay out of the water. There was dangerous surf up and down the coast right now. Our Jose Martinez joins us live from ocean beach, with the fun assignment today, and right before sunset. Hi, jose. Reporter juliette, it has been a very tough assignment for us today. It has been very hot. We went to dolores park, and now we are at ocean beach. Take a look at this beautiful sunset, but also look at those waves in the back. It has been part of this High Surf Advisory, but you can see everybody here is enjoying this beautiful afternoon. Reporter it is the place to be if you want to enjoy the sunshine in San Francisco. We are just here, enjoying the sun, having a picnic in the shade. Reporter dolores park is the Perfect Place to cool off for many residents, like jennifer toler, who works as a nanny, and decided to spend the day here, reading and playing with her little one. For us, hot is 77 to 80, which is nothing, compared to other places. But that is scorching for us. Reporter that is why michelle branch, a lawyer working nearby, took her bag, her book, some flowers, and spent her lunch break at the park. So beautiful outside, you see people having fun, enjoying San Francisco. So i took a walk around the mission. Reporter little by little, more people got to the park, many of them running away from apartment without air conditioning. It is going to be full, everything will be. You will barely be able to get a spot. This was very lucky, over here, up there, especially. It is going to be crowded everywhere, especially the beaches. Reporter so we followed janets tip, and came to ocean beach, where a High Surf Advisory has been in place. Take a look at the waves this thursday afternoon. A perfect playground for surfers like joseph and stanley. Some big waves coming in, some long, long sets of big waves. Reporter that is why lifeguards were present all day long, reminding people of the dangers of speaker waves and rip tides. It was good, challenging. Lots of different emotions. Reporter they were having a great time, and so are we right now, just looking at this dutiful sunset and the waves. And of course, for me, coming from the east coast, this is a dream come true, i am finally getting my summer in San Francisco, so i am going to enjoy it. Back to you. As you should. That was such a beautiful view. Who is your photographer . Alex montano . Alex montano, just doing his magic. Nice job, alex. Jose, thank you, as well. Now in other news, it is a daily problem on San Francisco streets, fires sparking from nearby encampments in the mission district, several cars were torched in a pair of recent fires. Wilson walker spoke with a Business Owner who moved to escape crime, and is now trying to get the city to do something about this safety hazard in her new neighborhood. I thought maybe a change of neighborhood, new scenery was the answer. Reporter following a costly robbery downtown, Desiree Barrera moved her proper fox salon to the mission in just a few months ago. Trouble has followed. I came out, saw huge flames, i ran down, my car was on fire. Reporter her car was the only one damaged that day. It was totaled, and that was just the first fire. That was on friday. That sunday, there was another fire on this block that burned 11 cars. Reporter so one dozen cars lost in two fires. Fortunately, neighbors managed to put out the third fire before it could cause much damage. This happens on tuesday afternoon around 3 00 p. M. This was the third in four days. Four days ago, we had a 681 and kevin fires total in San Francisco. Reporter while the numbers are actually trending down a little from last year, the San Francisco Fire Department still sees about two and kevin fires each day. Lieutenant Mariano Elias says the department is making outreach efforts to the tents along these alleyways. They make daily contact, you cannot force someone against their will to move or enter a Rehabilitation Program or housing. Frankly, some People Choose to stay on the streets. Reporter that will sound a lot like what we have heard from the city Homeless Outreach teams this year. We had to explain to people that right now, we have rules we have to work with. I feel like, for the most part, people understand people are just living, and city issues are going on. I would say, as of the past two months, the fires have been something that we have been concerned about. And we have voiced to the city. Reporter barrera says that she and her neighbors have been patient, but the risk of larger disaster has been determined to find answers. I have had a huge amount of support from different districts of the city, community, and Business Owners. I have to say almost everyone is on the same page, we all want change. Reporter the ongoing legal case over how the city handles encampments is obviously a huge part of this. The city says the judge has provided enough clarity that the city can move ahead and change the way it does things. As we reported last week, the City Attorney says new instructions are being drawn up as we speak. They will be issued to the crews and presumably to the police sometime in the next couple weeks. So changes, we are told, are on the way. Wilson, thank you.
