Turning now to oakland were yesterday, mayor sheng thao delivered her first state of the city address since taking office 10 months ago. They have a lot to tackle that includes ongoing issues like homelessness and a big budget deficit but the dominant issue for most oaklanders is Public Safety. Thao said yesterday that she is taking steps to address those concerns. I am dedicated to a more robust and accountable Police Department with an engaging presence on our street and specialized unit to tackle specific crimes. Violent crime is up over 20 from last year and the oakland Police Department has been without a chief since february. The city also missed out on a state grant to fight retail crime. The group neighbors together oakland it is completely unaccountable. She is completely absent. She has failed us. The people of oakland demand more. Mayor thao said some of her Public Safety priorities include more police foot patrols, hiring more dispatchers , and adding hundreds of Speed Enforcement cameras around the city. Mayor sheng thao joins us now on the afternoon edition. Thank you for joining us. We heard from people in oakland yesterday who wanted you to address the situation with the police chief after you fired Leronne Armstrong back in february. Many of these priorities you laid out are possible without the stability in the oakland Police Department . All the things that i have laid out is already underway. What we are seeing is that it is possible because we have great leadership in place right now as well is while we are waiting for the Police Commission to recommend potential candidates to be our next chief. This is a process. This is not something we want to rush into but we want to make sure we have strong candidates. We know last time when the city was looking for their chief at that time, a year and a half ago, it has been over a year. We will be getting those recommendations at the end of this year and we will be having a police chief. In regards to all of the things we are implementing, i want to be very clear. The first thing i think about when i wake up is how do you protect and make oaklanders feel safe . That is the only thing i think about before going to bed. It is incredibly important to me that people feel safe walking on their streets, that they feel safe knowing that if they come to downtown, they will not get their windows broken into. With that being said, that is why i am thankful that the City Council Unanimously passed my initiative to implement 300 cameras citywide. These cameras will help set up a command station where people are watching the footage in real time, looking just for criminals. The crimes that are being actively committed throughout this city will help us activate our officers in real time. The second thing is we will be able to utilize the footage to give to our District Attorneys Office so we can prosecute and apprehend the suspects and make sure they are brought to justice. Of course, i have doubled the number of foot patrol officers throughout the city. What we are seeing is that each crime, what we would usually call property crime, have changed. These property crimes are now being committed with people who have guns. Right . This is not only happening in oakland but crime is fluid and it has happened across the region. These cameras are also going to be able to connect with cameras from the city of san leandro, alameda, berkeley so that we can all Work Together in a more sufficient and effective way regionally because we know that criminals know no bounds in regards of where theyre going to attack. We are doing multiple different things. Be reassured we are doing this right now. We are implementing and this is why we are seeing a decrease in our homicides. You also mention investing and oakland businesses. Last month, 200 businesses closed up shop for a day as a protest over rising crime. What kind of input will Small Business owners have in these kinds of investments you have made . That is a good question. They will have direct input. I have been consistently meeting with the businesses, big and small. We are coming up with solutions and ideas. I will be announcing my special assistant advisory in the coming weeks or so and that person will be extending the resources we have from the public end to the private end so that we are working with community and with the Small Businesses and larger businesses to ensure the safety of employees, to ensure the safety of peoples customers. Also, ensure employees of oakland as well. We are braiding all of those resources together and coming together as a community to really take on this hard challenge in oakland. Thank you so much for joining us this afternoon. Thank you for having me. A lifeline for families in the bay area, now having to scale back. Capitol right now where a second round of voting was worse than the first for jim jordan. The congressman trying to become the next House Speaker after the ouster of california is kevin mccarthy. Jim jordan of ohio failed on the second ballot to become House Speaker. The representative backed by former President Donald Trump shared even more support from gop colleagues on the second vote. He lost that support. The house is at a standstill without a speaker. When the federal government declared an end to the Public Health emergency back in may, it meant big cuts to pandemic era benefits and families struggling with Food Insecurity may be feeling it more than most. Research in august found that four in 10 families that receive pandemic era federal aid were buying groceries and are now skipping meals. That is double the rate of people who missed meals compared with a year ago. A loss of federal, state, and local funding is now hitting the San FranciscoMarin Food Bank. It is going to have to cut some of its staff in the next two years and some services for hungry families. It is an unfortunate contrast. The need to be families has only gone up since before the pandemic and they will be an end to some of those services that started in response to that need. In addition to that, we will see some staff lose their position as these changes begin. The San FranciscoMarin Food Bank announced this week that those Services Like their emergency popup pantry will need to end by the summer of 25. They will also reduce their home delivered grocery enrollment. The food bank will work to reopen and expand existing food pantries. Around 33 of those pantries and their network closed during the pandemic. The increased staff was taken not to meet the needs during the pandemic but now they will reduce staff by more than 50 employees. This will include some early retirements and layoffs over the next year and have. We are really concerned about the trend we are seeing in our city and we will be working with directly directly with the mayors office. We are focused on coordinating solutions. We need to address the impact of the food program sending. The challenges staff are facing are in part because of federal, state, and local funding going away. Another way to look at this is to look at the projections of june 2025. That is when the changes will take effect and they will still be feeding 40,000 households a week and that is a 20 increase from before the pandemic. Thank you. Live to the east bay, it will be a hot one on this first alert weather day. Lets go straight to meteorologist jessica burch. Magnitude 4. 1 earthquake struck along the delta this morning at 9 29. As of now, there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries from this earthquake but we will continue to monitor this as we head into the morning hours. Daytime highs today are well above average. The National Weather service has issued a heat advisory that will last all throughout the day today and all throughout the day tomorrow with temperatures peaking tomorrow afternoon close to record breaking numbers. This is a friendly reminder to start drinking lots of water and take good care of your skin if you have to stay outside. A heat dome is starting to build its way in. We have to get through today and tomorrow first. Tomorrow we could be breaking records in areas like san jose with forecasted numbers to 95 degrees in the middle of october. 95 also in santa rosa. If we get a degree above that, we could be breaking records. Lets start off with daytime highs today. It is a warm day today. We are under heat advisory. Into this afternoon, we will be in the 90s. 80s across the bay bridge into oakland. Here we go into the east bay, 90s into the east with very similar forecast, sunny skies and all the way down into the Santa Clara Valley. I hope you like those clouds yesterday because we are done with them for now. It will be sunny and hot heading into this afternoon. How long will this last . Luckily not that long. Lets take a look at the next seven days. 90s in the forecast for us. A lot of 80s throughout the bay. Then we cool down passed after thursday into our friday forecast. Still sunny skies but 96 degrees down to 76 degrees and then low 70s for this weekend. Keep all the wardrobe ready to go because you will wanting tops and shorts tomorrow. You will want to get rid of those heading into the weekend. If you think that is a drastic change, watch what happens in the bay. We will be hitting the 90s as early as tomorrow with plenty of sunshine. Into the weekend, cool and cloudy with a chance of showers into our sunday forecast. To be honest with you, we truly have it all within the next seven days. We all saw it on sunday, the 49ers did not exactly have their a game in a road loss to the Cleveland Browns but all eyes will be on the red and golden minnesota. See how life has changed for brock purdy since the last time the niners played there. I am always handing my phone to someone at a special event and asking them to take a video or i take the video but then i am never in them because i am behind the camera. Let me introduce you to my new camera man. Watch this for a second. As i move across, see how my phone is following me . That is what this does. We place our smart phone in it and like magic, it can track our every move. Every time we go forward or backward, it rotates 350 degrees. It also zooms in and out as you get closer or further from the camera. I sure wish i had this when my kids were playing soccer or performing at dance recitals but now i am using it for all of my family events. This is so easy to use. No Tech Experience needed. If i can do it, anyone can. It takes a second to set up and work with virtually every smart phone. I have to say, this is my favorite gadget, ever. It really helps to follow and collect all of the special moments in our lives and lets us be present. Right now, we are offering 44 the 49ers winning streak ended last sunday but San Francisco has won its last three games on monday night football. Vern glenn has more in the red and gold report. The 49ers have turned the page with sunday slauson cleveland. It is now vikings week. Everybody will be ready to go monday night on the field and in the broadcast booth. I am going full vikings. I like to give the opponent a lot of respect. The vikings have no won at home this season. Baby the league in turnovers and will be without their star receiver, justin jefferson. Tim ryan said to respect the opponent. Kirk cousins leads the league in touchdown passes and Daniel Hunter number one in sacks. A lot has changed since brock purdy since his last trip to minnesota. He was just trying to make the team when the 49ers were there the last three seasons and he was not at the top of my reducers list for postgame guest. Mr. Purdy has joined us. They are saying hold type. 15 months later, he is qb one for the 49ers and starring in commercials. Yeah, a lot has changed. For the red and gold report, im vern glenn. A homecoming to remember with a coast guard crew back in the bay. We will tell you about you know i got two home runs. You got two jacks. And then my grand slam. I signed a ball for you. Okay. And it says papa i love you. Why did you do that . Because youve taught me everything about baseball. Oh hunny bunny, thats so sweet. coming up, a Delivery Driver caught in the act eating a customer s food in the car. What happened when the Restaurant Owner confronted him.
