President joe biden just met with israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. As soon as that happens, well bring it to you. Jess . It a first alert weather day. And nicole, im so sorry about your locker and im glad you got into it but its a first alert weather day here in the bay area. For everyone who lives in our inland areas from the east bay into the Santa Clara Valley, all the way up into the north bay, were going to be feeling some heat as we wake up and head out the door this morning. Heading into this afternoon, its actually off to a mild start and a clear start this morning. Remember yesterday . With all these cloudy skies and foggy conditions. Its not the case for us this morning. High pressure is building its way in. And you know what it does . Kind of acts like a drying mechanism and then to add to that also going to be seeing temperatures well above average. Not only today, but tomorrow too. So enjoy these Cool Temperatures while we have them. Because its not going to last for too much longer. 57degree right now in San Francisco and as we head just a little more north in the in the 50s in the north bay this morning. And extend throughout the hours today until tomorrow at11 00 p. M. Pretty much the whole bay area. So lets talk about what we can do about this. First off this area of High Pressure is kind of acting like a heat dome. Remember fleet week . Very similar to that. Temperatures well above average and potentially breaking records in areas as early as tomorrow. But today, were left with 70s along the coast and 90s stretching through the east bay into the Santa Clara Valley so its going to feel hot and you are going to want to have the ac ready to go and maybe just enjoy the indoors the next couple of days. Now over to you, g. All right, thank you. Lets talk about the roadways right now. If you are up early getting out the door, look at this. Its a nice ride no delays and in fact were off to a very good start on all the major freeways. And bay bridges. Its an easy ride as you head into San Francisco. And im excited to show this live look of the Golden Gate Bridge because yesterday, it was covered in fog. But look, you can see it perfectly today. No fog to slow you down at least across the span here, traffic is moving along seamlessly and a nice start ride across the san mateo bridge. Headed westbound between 808 and 101. By no means any delays or issues. And that 880 commute is clear in both directions. Well, we await a cbs news special report from the middle east, we can tell you israel at war and this morning President Joe Biden landed in the war zone. Hes got two very clear objective this is morning. First to show support for israels light to defend itself against terrorism. And second, pressing for humanitarian considerations for palestinians who are caught in the crossfire between hamas and israel. Heres the president earlier this morning speaking about his meeting with israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Reporter israel as they respond to these attacks, seems to me that have to continue to ensure that you have what you need to defend yourselves. And were going to make sure that occurs as you know. And we have to also bear in mind that hamas doesnt represent all the palestinian people. And has brought them only suffering. Hamas has brought them only suffering. President biden had planned on a summit with mideast leaders butafter a rocket struck a packed hospital in gaza city, leaders canceled participation. This morning both sides pointing blame. Hamas says israel hit the hol and meanwhile Israeli Intelligence say a barrage of o rockets launched from gaza are to blame. Saying a misfire in gaza is the reason the hospital was hit. This morning, though, rescuers combing through the rubble. We spoke with the bay area doctor with family trapped in gaza. And i paused outside the e. R. Just thinking about my fellow eight e. R. Staff out there in gaza. Caring for the thousands of people who are injured and the thousands of people that have lost their lives and the children i mean. One of the most difficult things for any e. R. Doctor and e. R. Nurse is to see a child come its one of the most regardless how much death you see, thats one of the most difficult things we see and i just i mean, it was very difficult just walking into my car and oh just thinking about you feel hopeless sometimes. Meanwhile, in israel, a special group of Emergency Responders still busy gathering the dead and more than 11 days after hamas terror attack left scores dead and claimed many hostages. Among the dead, and captured, are americans. Nicole . Well, here in the bay area, reed, the bloodshed has been a lot to process. For many people watching the war unfold. Last night, a gathering in San Francisco saw groups from different faiths and backgrounds agree on ending the violence. Kenny choi was at delores park speaking to some who think our government needs to do more to facilitate peace. Whats happening our responsibility to stand up and fight back. Reporter lulu holds back tears thinking of innocent civilians being killed as israel continues to launch missiles to target hamas militants. We just want our people, the palestinian people, to see that theyre not forgotten and we are fighting for them in every way that we can. Reporter with candles lit, hundreds gathered in San Franciscos park hoping light will overcome a darkness that pervades in times of war. Definitely seeing people from all over come together is something that gives us hope but what we really need right now is our government to say, cease fire. Enough. Enough killing. Reporter jewish voice for peace bay area joined groups like arab resource an organizing center to show sol dirty and a plea for the bombings in gaza to end. You cant allow our grief about the deaths of israelis to become used as a weapon to murder palestinians. Because that is not jewish values. Reporter theyre calling for an immediate cease fire, saying the u. S. Government is playing the wrong role. The root cause of the violence in the middle east is israels apartheid state and continuing occupation of the palestinian people. Reporter standing in the large crowd, all but a third grader searched for words to describe what shes praying for in a part of the war that so far away but so close to her heart. Tell me what peace means to you. Peace means to me that like no violence basically. Like no violence. Reporter whether its israel or in gaza. If you can justify this you need to look in the mirror and ask where your humanity went. Ask where your humanity is. And well continue to follow the latest developments out of the middle east on air, streaming on cbs news bay area, and online at kpix. Com. The house is the race for the speaker is still on. Beautiful streets of alameda as you are waking up. We hope you have a great day. The house of representatives will vote again this morning on who will be the new speaker and we saw yesterday jim jordan failed to get enough votes to take the gavel. 20 republicans voted against the ohio representative in the initial vote. Leaving him with about a dozen votes short of the 217 he needs. Jordan hopes to sway key holdouts before todays vote. Now without a speaker to house remains effectively frozen. How far are you willing to go. Until we get a speaker, we have to have a speaker and it cant be some deal with the democrats. The situation in the house of representatives right now is unreal, unbelievable, and unacceptable. It was to years ago jordan voted to block the certification of President Bidens 2020 win. I have never said this election was stolen. All i have said is lets check it out. He went over to the white house and helped plot the entire thing. He urged publicly people disgruntled about the election to march on the cap toil. Capitol. We dont know how many rounds of voting theyre going to need to reach a decision. Closer to home now street vendingen San Franciscos Mission Street will be a thing of the past starting next month. The board of supervisors announced its banning a vending on missions street to promote Public Health and safety and supervisor Hillary Ronan says many public works employees were assaulted and their lives threatened by individuals selling stolen goods on the street. The Supervisors Office says its now identifying better spaces for legitimate vendors to sell their goods. Well, when you see the legitimate vendors its fun. They work so hard. So im glad that theyre punctuating those who are keeping the law and giving us a chance to get to know people. I know, aim conflicted on this because it is someones livelihood but at the same time theres a process. And then get back on to you know, vending on the streets. I think finding an area for you know, vendors to go would be fun. You can make it sort of a Farmers Market of goods in a way. A lot of cities have done that around the country too. Its a first alert weather day. Hot outside if you are vending on the sidewalk or going for a walk on the sidewalk to breakfast this morning. Really good point. For all the people who work outside, today, tomorrow, you are going to want to find a shady spot. Something to keep you cool. Its going to be a hot one right around the corner and lets start off with this current temperature throughout the bay area this morning. This is as cool as its going to get. Enjoy it while we have it this morning while the sun is still kind of working its way up. Right now in san jose were actually in the 50s widespread throughout the bay area. 60s in the east bay. 50s into San Francisco. But lets dive straight into the heat advisory. The reason why we are calling for a first alert weather day today throughout all the highlighted zones and counties on the map behind me, this is what we have as we head into the afternoon. Temperatures well above average and were talking about 80s and 90s in the forecast today. Recordbreaking numbers tomorrow. So this heat advisory is going to last until tomorrow at 11 00 p. M. And the reason why in the atmosphere, we have High Pressure ridging its way into the bay area. This is warm dry air from the south and this is a typical pattern for the summer. Not necessarily right now. So what were seeing when it comes to the numbers especially for our forecast tomorrow, for many of us, were near recordbreaking. But for some of us, were actually expected to pass it by far and i mean san jose a great example. The Santa Clara Valley is going to heat up a lot as we head into our forecast tomorrow. So as we take a look at temperatures today, its going to be similar to tomorrows forecast. Just were going to crank it up a little bit more into our thursday forecast so 80s in San Francisco and 70s along the coast and halfmoon bay and this is a beautiful weekend to maybe take advantage of heading out to halfmoon bay. And plus its october anyways so you can pick up a pumpkin while you are down there too. 93 today in napa and stretching all the way down into the Santa Clara Valley, were seeing 90s stretch into the Santa Clara Valley from los gatos over into san jose. A similar trend down into morgan hill. So im going to pull this down and i want to show you the next seven days because were talking about this heat wave you are probably wondering how much longer is it going to last. Its october and i dont want to be dealing with heat right . 90s today and 90s tomorrow. Watch what happens by friday heading into this weekend. We not only jumped into the 70s, but low 70s potentially upper 60s in our inland forecast. As early as saturday into sunday. With morning showers expected for our sunday forecast. So a big change right around the corner and like i mentioned, today, tomorrow, its going to be a hot one for us. You are going to want to have light clothing especially outside today and tomorrow and if you have kids, make sure theyre taking it slow today. In the bay . All around the water were talking about 80s today and 90s tomorrow. And then we jump into the 60s as we head into our saturday forecast. With a light chance of showers in those Early Morning hours for sunday. Throughout the morning continue to show you the models and show you how much rain we can expect with that system. But for now, the big weather story is the heat today and tomorrow. As that heat advisory goes in effect at 11 00 a. M. , now over to you, g. All right jess, thank you. The roadways and i have some good news to report which is great because that doesnt always happen with traffic. But a live look at Golden Gate Bridge, and you can see it perfectly. Just fine this morning. No fog to slow you down. So thats a great news for anyone making that ride out of marin county and working your way over into San Francisco. So getting across the span, easy breezy right now. No delays and now there was some road work on that northbound side. But it is countercommute and its not really causing any brake lights or issues. In fact, most of the bay area bridges look really nice this morning. Some overnight road work on the carquinez bridge but that should be wrapping up soon. You are probably good to go. Live look here. This is the san mateo bridge. Westbound commuters, all the taillights working to 101. Right now, only about 14 to 16 minutes to go between the nimitz over to the pension la. If you are heading westbound. So pretty easy commute as you head through there. And in fact traffic is pretty quiet as well as the bay bridge toll plaza. Its only 5 17. The metering lights dont typically turn on until after about 5 30. You still have a little time and probably make it before the rush. Traffic is looking pretty nice so far westbound for anyone heading over into San Francisco. Taking a quick live look here at the nimitz freeway both directions, very quiet. Everything is moving along really nicely headed north or southbound. Near the coliseum. Southbound commuters it does start getting a little crowded as you get into hayward but thats a typical pattern at this time of the morning. And then that really starts to ramp up once we get into the 6 00 hour. Now we are tracking brake lights for anyone making that ride supercommuters, if you are headed out of the Altamont Pass, and those south bay supercommuters out of gilroy. The travel times coming up in a few minutes. Reed . Some sad news from one of the community partners. The San Francisco Marin Food Bank announced its having to reduce services because of a loss of funding and that means theyre going to have to cut some of its staff over the next two years. Shawn chitnis is live this morning at the food bank with more on why this is happening. Shawn, we are so invested as a community station in partnering with food banks all over bay area, we know the constraints are difficult. Why this choice . Reporter well, good morning, certainly we know that the increase in need has gone up from the pandemic. And thats why this is especially hard to hear. But while there are more people who need the food and need the help, unfortunately, the money is not coming in like it was before and thats why theyre going to have to start ending services over the next year and a half. And with that, it will also be cutting some of their staff members. Now the San Francisco Marin Food Bank announced earlier this week that they were going to be making some of these changes including the end of Services Like their emergency popup pantries. That is going to end in the summer of 2025. They will also reduce their home delivered groceries enrollment. The bank will work to reopen and expand some of the existing food pantries, where we saw pantries closing by about 33 in the pandemic within their network. The foot bank says they increased staff to meet the needs of the pandemic, but now they will have to reduce their staffing by more than 50 employees. This will include some early retirements and layoffs over the next year and a half. Now earlier this week, before this announcement had even happened, staff at the food bank told us the issues they were facing since federal, state and local funding is going away. So we know that during the pandemic, the need for our Services Grew astronomically. And at the time so did funding. But as the pandemic funding is starting to go away, now more than ever, we need the communitys support to ensure that were able to continue distributing as much food as possible out into our community. Reporter so again, just to emphasize where we are at, by the end of 2025, in june, actually june 2025. Still the food bank will be feeding 40,000 households a week. And that is going to be an increase of 20 since before the pandemic. Reed, back to you. All right, shawn, so many sobering realities there. Thank you so much. Time now 5 20. This morning, President Joe Biden traveled to telaviv to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials. Cbs correspondent ian lee is live from telaviv with the very latest this morning on bidens meeting and the ongoing war. Certainly top of mind is that rocket that hit the hospital in gaza. How did that affect the conversation . Reporter good morning reed. It definitely was part of the conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The president saying that he believes the Prime Minister, that this was a misfired rocket. But even right now, we are witnessing really a blame game between the israelis and palestinians. Both are pointing fingers at each other but whoever is really ultimately to blame, this appears to be the largest single loss of civilian life in gaza since the war began. President joe biden met withPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in israel amid escalating regional tensions. We will continue to have israels back as you work to defend your people. Well continue to work with you and partners across the region to prevent more tragedy to innocent civilians. Reporter a fatal blast at a gaza City Hospital has killed hundreds of people, according to the Palestinian Health ministry. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas blamed israeli air strikes for the explosion. Calling it a war crime. Israel denies responsibility. And instead says the blast was caused by misfired rockets launched by islamic jihad. Based on what ive seen it appears as though it was done by the other team. Not you. But theres lot of people out there not sure. Reporter President Biden said he is outraged and deeply saddened by the hospital explosion. Has positioned military assets including a force of 2,000 marines and warships in the region to support israel if needed. President biden says he has directed his National Security team to gather information on what happened in that deadly gaza hospital blast. The secretary general of the United Nations also condemned the explosion and the Un Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting today to address the blast. Reed . So many hurting people in the wake of the blast at the hospital. What about science and evidence about where those rockets came from . Are they looking at Surveillance Video and are they looking at any satellite images . Reporter yeah, reed, you know, early this morning, the Israeli Military came out with charts and with pictures and with videos saying that this was a misfired rocket by islamic jihad. They released audio what they said also backs up their claim from militants talking in the gaza strip. One thing they point to is the lack of a crater and you know, when israel does drop a bomb, there tends to be craters. They said there just isnt one also they point to the surrounding buildings arent really that badly damaged. I can tell you from my own past experience working inside gaza during a conflict. I have seen rockets fall and fall into the gaza strip. So it is definitely in the realm of possibility. The palestinians though remain adamant that it is a bomb by the israelis. They have not really come out with any other evidence they say points to it. But we are going to have investigations by the u. N. And also the president has ordered his team to look into it. So were expecting those answers more answers to come from them. Likely top of mind will be the difference between a missile which is what israel has and rockets which is what hamas fires. Thank you so much, ian lee please stay safe there. Here at loam a Community Conversation and demand of a cease fire. Especially in danville, california. Jessica, did i make the right decision . I think made the right decision for the morning because its freezing in the studio. I will say when you go home thats the last thing you want to wear. I know nicole does that and thats the reason why i say that. A quick look outside right now, starting off with this morning, throughout the bay area, well, nice and cool. Just the way we like it as we kick off the Early Morning hours and 50s in the Santa Clara Valley. From los gatos over into the redwood city actually in the upper 50s there. Off to mild start this morning into this afternoon though, were under a heat advisory issued by the National Weather service. And i called for that earlier this week, we started seeing models really build with High Pressure and with that, comes drier conditions and a lot hotter temperatures right around the corner. So much so that we actually will see recordbreaking temperatures as early as tomorrow. So lets dive into this heat advisory and i kind of want the break it apart for you you are so prepared before you head out the door, probably thinking its a mild start to the day. But into this afternoon, you are going to notice a lot more sunshine compared to yesterday. And to add to that a lot more warmth too. All throughout the highlighted zones and counties on the map and this orange, this is where that heat advisory is issued. And we can see temperatures today into the 80s and the 90s and this is not even the warmest its going to get this week. Tomorrow even hotter. So 90s off into the east bay. 90s for our friends over in danville and once we head along the coast in the 70s. Which usually i would say its a great day to head to the coast but reason why im taking that back . Daytime highs tomorrow for the thursday forecast in areas like san jose thats where were expected to break the records the forecast models right now. But it gets the person stabilized where they can take a deep breathe and then have a chance to start to work on what the permanent exits are. Reporter funk shares that the solarpowered housing site would not only provides beds, but a full complex with amenities. They will be in a five year lease. Because its temporary, therefore, it doesnt have a longterm impact on the environment and doesnt go through all the extensive environmental reviews and doesnt have a longterm impact on zoning use and therefore doesnt have to abide by all the zoning restrictions. Reporter thanks to john a local philanthropist who owns land as donating it to the city for this use. For just 1. Faster and basic dignified shelter and then require that they come inside and get access to services for the benefit of themselves but also the broader community. Assemble them and put them on a site that includes dining buildings and bathroom buildings and computer lab, landscaping. All of that, the project costs works out to more like 75,000 per unit. Of course the units themselves are good indefinitely. You can pick them up and move them with a forklift. The total cost for the project is about 11. 3 million. Reporter elizabeth says this partnership is just the beginning. And shares the goal is simple. To provide unhoused neighbors with support and a safe space. Even with the 1 lease, the project is expected to cost the city about 18 million. That price tag by the way includes removing the homes after five years. A lot of people who are homeless advocates say just getting people into a clean space where they can rest and get a full nights sleep. Is a huge step forward. Homelessness should not be hopelessness. I think what it does is it provides shelter like you said, a community for them that is safe at night. Im all for it. I know that its obviously going to cost a lot of money. And you know, so there are those that oppose it for that reason alone. But hopefully it gets them where they need. It looks really nice. And i think sometimes when you are down and out, and you are giving an opportunity, and Something Like this, its good for them too. Like abysm place to live and people deserve that. Everyone needs a sanctuary right . We think about the unhoused population today on a first alert weather day, jess, how long is this going to last . Today and tomorrow, thats the big days im concerned about. Especially for anyone who lives you know, works outside and who operates outside. Its going to be a hot one. Finding the shady spot on a lie day like today is really important. Hydrate too. For all of us throughout the bay area waking thumb morning its another mild start. I mean were talking about 50s and 60s throughout the bay area. Nice and cool for now. But into this afternoon, right around corner the National Weather service is issuing a heat advisory. We were talking about it earlier this week looking at the models of course now its here. Today at 11 00 a. M. Thats when the heat advisory goes into effect. And heres the reason why. A heat dome is really starting to build just over our california coastline. As we head into the forecast today and tomorrow. Tomorrow is when it peaks so tomorrows heat will be even more significant than today. If you are heading outside today and you are thinking oh man i have a headache and i already have a sunburn and it was really, really hot and sun if out there today. Prepare for tomorrow. Because this heat advisory lasts until 11 00 p. M. Tomorrow for all the highlighted zones and counties on this map. Hydrate and take good care of your skin and your loved ones too. Close to the triple digits in areas off into the east bay. Anywhere from san ramon over into walnut creek and down into the Santa Clara Valley its a chance that we will be breaking a record for the daytime highs in areas like san jose where were expected to hit 95 degrees tomorrow. 91 was the record for that last time. So lets actually just take a quick look at whats going on today since thats tomorrows forecast. Already starting to feel the. Upper 80s in vallejo and were expecting 90s today for our daytime highs in areas like concord and all the way over into antioch. And today were going to be warming up into the 90s from livermore down into the Santa Clara Valley. From san jose over into los gatos. So its a warm one for us right around the corner. I want to show you the next seven days because you are probably wondering how much longer is this heat going to last . The advisory expires tomorrow at 11 00 p. M. And then we cool down quick. And it will feel so different and its like just going into a different portion of the bay area. You know how you drive from the coast off into the inland areas sometimes . And just within the hour drive you feel such a difference with the forecast. Well, stay in your local area and you are going tonettes that this week too. I mean were talking about 90s today tomorrow like i said. 70s into our weekend forecast. The Early Morning showers on sunday and low 70s and oh my gosh its going to look and feel a lot different and going to be nice to get the smell of rain too. But we have to get through the heat wave first. Whats interesting about this forecast, thanks to the onshore flow cool down even more than the inland areas. 60s into this weekend. We have a little bit of everything in the forecast for us today and tomorrow and heading into this next seven days. Well continue to keep you updated here in your first alert forecast. For now over to you, g. All right, thank you. Lets talk about the roadways right now. And its going to be a hot one out there so make sure you check the car its good too go as you commute this morning. Dont want to get stuck on the side of the roadway. But right now its busy, bay bridge metering lights are on. And we have got that backup already this morning for anyone making that ride off the eastshore freeway and its starting to back up a little bit there. Westbound 580, and 880 actually still look pretty good. And that backup is not too bad. Its just beyond that overpass there so not quite to the foot of the maze. But we know that changes especially within the next couple of minutes at least before we get to 6 00. So couple of other things to look out for are supercommuter routes are already getting busy this morning. Were seating a lot of brake lights working your way westbound out of tracy heading into the Altamont Pass this morning. The westbound 580 ride certainly a busy one and westbound highway 4 is also starting to beg down just a little bit. At least as you work your way through the pittsburg area. Lets go all the way south and check in on our commuters coming out of gilroy. San martin and morgan hill. Definitely pack your patience and give yourself some extra time as you head through there. Other than that, were not seeing a lot of brake lights or issues. The rest of the way through the south bay that north 101 commute is actually bearable this morning. The rest of the way. So well let you know when that changes. All right, the giants are hosting a movie night at oracle park for one of the biggest blockbuster movies of the summer. Of course, we are talking about barbie.
