Earlier, i spoke with a local palestinian doctor who says his family in the region is having to ration food and supplies while bombs are flying overhead. Joining us now is dr. Mohammed zubei, an emergency physician at el camino hospital. Thank you for joining us. I understand you have family that is now living as trapped in gaza. Do you know how they are doing . When was the last time you actually had contact with them . Thanks for having me, ryan. The last contact i had with my cousins and aunt in gaza was a couple days ago. It has been very sparse. The last i knew, their buildings were bombed out, in the northern part of gaza. They had slowly made their way down to the southern portion of the gaza strip. I have not be able to make any phone connections with them, just because of the lack of electricity and cellular service. My cousin last message to me that they were rationing out different foods. They were afraid of dodging bombs, and afraid of what the next hour would hold. For the past several months, when i talk to them, i do hear bombs flying over. What is troubling is that we are now focusing on gaza, after decades and decades of oppression and occupation and psychological warfare. This pressure cooker, just building up pressure, and people losing their lives. It is sad for me to see how many human lives have to be lost before the world wakes up. How far we have moved away from valuing human life. It just pains me to the core. I know it pains so many other fellow americans when they see this and feel hopeless. It is one of the reasons i went out to emergency medicine as trauma, to help people during their lowest times. Hearing about the recent bombing and killing of hundreds of people just a few hours ago in gaza , i just could not believe it. I had just walked out of an e. R. Shift yesterday, after midnight. I paused outside the e. R. , thinking about my fellow e. R. Staff out there in gaza, caring for the thousands of people injured and the thousands of people who have lost their lives , and the children. I mean, one of the most difficult things for any e. R. Doctor or e. R. Nurse is to see a child come in. Regardless of how much jeff you see, that is one of the most difficult things we see. It was very difficult, just walking into my car, thinking about you feel hopeless, sometimes. Sorry. We want to thank dr. For sharing an interview with us, the full interview at kpix. Com. I am here, in the center of the mission, where safer San Francisco sounds like a needed plan to address public safety. But there is a concern out here over the possible impact it could have on communities of color. It is the newest plan from the city to fight crime. We wants to see change in San Francisco. Reporter mayor london n. Breed refers to a safer San Francisco ballot measure for the march 2024 election. The measure will give officers access to Technology Like drones, ease restrictions in police changes in the city, and reduce paperwork requirements for officers, but not everyone thinks this is a good idea. Policing does not equal safety. The Supreme Court themselves have said that, just because you are a Police Officer does not mean you are responsible for public safety, and as a result, it means policing does not bring safety to communities. Reporter we met with in the heart of the mission, where she works as a community leader. She has over policing has already caused enough damage to communities of color. That there is policy paper after policy paper, study after study showing that so often over policing does not create more safety. And who gets to be over policed and how they get over police also follows around racial, class, and economic lines. Reporter her biggest concern is the use of technology. Right now, sfp the officers cannot use cityowned and operated cameras and drones to prevent, investigate and some solve crimes. If this measure is approved, those policies will change. She is afraid these tactics could create more incidents like the dolores park hill bomb, back in july, were officers clashed with hundreds of teenagers, resulting in arrests and lawsuits. The bombing a couple months ago, this was a place where young people were corralled by police, harassed point parents were not notified. Civil rights were violated.
