Does it seem like our lives are moving along at an ever faster pace . Take one example. The online world where algorithms feed us an endless stream of engaging content. But are we really living life faster . And is this change changing us . Pay close attention to correspondent david pogue. Reporter uhhuh. Yeah. Hang on a second. Oh, let me call you back. I have got to do a tv thing. Does it ever seem like something is going on with our Attention Spans . I mean, the worlds number one most downloaded app is tiktok, an infinite stream of very short video clips. Newspaper articles are getting shorter and they tell you how much time you will need to read them. The average length of a shot in a movie is now under five seconds. We are always holding another device, like if you are watching something, i feel like everyone has their phone next to them. Reporter these days, multitasking while you are tasking is the norm among young people. Ask counselor Lauren Barnett and her daughters zoe and sasha. My roommates are doing work on their computers, watching tv, on their phones texting people. I have a short Attention Span. I hate long classes. Yeah, i cant sit in long classes. Long meals. Yeah. Reporter where are your phones right now . Over there somewhere. Reporter is there any cell in your body thats like as soon as this is over, i am going to go over . Every cell. So my book is called Attention Span, and its based reporter sorry, hang on a second. Hello . Just kidding. Dplor yaus mark is an attention researcher at the university of california irvine. Is there any Scientific Evidence that Attention Spans are getting shorter . Yes. So, we started studying Attention Span length over 20 years ago. We would shadow people with a stopwatch and every time they shifted attention, wed click stop. In 2003, we found that Attention Spans averaged about 2 1 2 minutes on any screen before people switched. In the last five, six years, they are averaging 47 seconds on a screen. How can you get anything done if youre supposed to write a report in 47 seconds later you are switching to another app . You do it with great difficulty. Reporter professor mark maintains that shorter Attention Span has three down sides. The first is people make more errors when they do attention shifting. Second down side is that it takes longer to do something because we have to reorient to every new task, every time we shift. The third down side, maybe this is the worst of all, is that stress increases. When people are working on multiple tasks and they have to shift their attention, their Blood Pressure rises. Reporter you dont have to be a professor to guess at the cause of our greatest distract ability. Its technology, of course. Phones. Social media. Texting. Sasha barnett can attest to that. Do you guys have iphones . Yeah. Reporter go into the screen Time Settings and tell us how many unlocks in a day. You can do that . Oh, pickups. I picked it up 236 times. Oh, my god thats a lot. Reporter so is that it . Have we become the overstimulated zombies foretold in back to the future ii . I dont think our Attention Spans have changed really at all. There is no data for that. Reporter cornell psychology Professor Emeritus james cutting doesnt think its time to abandon all hope. I would point out that tsa, baggage scanners work twohour shifts. Thats intensive work for two hours. And many of us have watched teenagers play their games for many hours at a time. It strikes me that that kind of Attention Span is impressive. Reporter but what about that business of movie shots getting shorter . I mean, we have come a long way from the pacing of 2001 a space odyssey in 1968. To top gun maverick last year. Smoke it the air reporter cutting says that has nothing to do with our Attention Spans. We just know the language of movies better than our ancestors did. We have gotten over the decades a lot faster at picking up visual material. It makes sense that a filmmaker would make the shots shorter. The filmmaker doesnt need to dwell on Something Like that. Reporter cutting also points out thatino tiktok videos are very short, movies themselves are getting longer. There are a lot more movies pushing three hours now than there used to be. Of course, we have Long Form Television where things go on for eight episodes, 12 episode, whatever. Reporter one things for sure. As Lauren Barnett points out, technology is not going away. Its their whole world. There is no job where they could be without it. There is no academic environment, no social interaction unless they go to the mountains for two months. I am not an advocate of throwing away technology. What we need to do instead is learn how to live with it. Reporter gloria mark has a couple of tips for staying focused. First, when you feel the itch to change tasks, analyze why. If its just boredom or procrastination, make a deal with yourself that you will work another 20 minutes and then treat yourself to a reward. Second, picture yourself at the end of the day. What you want to have accomplished. How you want to feel. A concrete visualization of yourself sitting on the couch, you know, watching your favorite show is really good motivation. Reporter i mean, my grandfather died shy of his 107th birthday. Wow. Reporter and he told me that his parents would say, youre going to rot your brain listening to that newfangled radio. Right. Reporter for me, you are going to rot your brain watching tv. For you, its you are going to rot your brain on social media. I mean, every generation thinks that technology is ruining the next one. Thats why im hung up on notion of is it worse or just different . Depends on whether they are considering productivity or well being. They are two very different things. They will be just as productive, but their well being w with that increased productivity, there is no question that their well being is negatively impacted. So therein lies the dilemma. vo imagine a lifetime spent waiting. Waiting for a family. Waiting to be loved. Older and specialneeds shelter dogs wait the longest to find loving people. Most of us think of spring as the time for blossoms and blooms, but as mo rocca reminds us, come summer and fall, the sunflower shines bright. Reporter who is responsible for this . I am responsible for planting them. She is responsible for putting on facebook. Reporter this field of sunflowers is courtesy of ted and kris grinter. It looks like it goes on forever out there. And its really pretty. It is breathtaking when the whole field is in bloom and you just see that sea of yellow. Reporter that sea of yellow has made grinter farms in lawrence, kansas, one of the states most popular spots for sunflower lovers. Thousands visit each year. So tell me about the kinds of people who come here. All kinds. From everywhere. All over the world, really. One day i met somebody from australia, russia, and china in five minutes. Reporter so many people tried coming in 2016, it caused a tenmile backup on the highway. The grinters dub it carmageddon. We broke the interstate. Reporter you broke the interstate . Yes. I got a call, an angry call from the sheriff that said you have to close it down, and i said, sir, its a field. Reporter back in the 1970s, teds father hoped to turn sunflowers into biofuel. When that idea went bust, he started harvesting the seeds for bird feed. You have this field, but it only exists how long . Maybe two weeks. Reporter soon after, ted joined the family business. This was just opening up. Reporter about a million seeds are planted each summer. By early september, they are picture perfect. We heard about it online i think a lot. A lot of my friends come out here, put pictures on instagram. Reporter the couple doesnt charged a mission, but there is a donation box. Leave a dollar, take a flower. Well, i farm 2,000 acres. I dont make a living off the sunflowers. Its more of a hobby. Thats kind of taken over. If you look around and you see all the smiles on peoples faces, were making a lot of memories. Reporter fun fact. Sunflowers are heliotrope i can. As they grow, they follow the sun each day through the sky. After they bloom, they are fixed facing east. And sunflower is something of a misnomer since each head contains up to thousands of tiny flowers known as florets. 5,000 years ago they became cultivated into these giant sunflowers that we kind of see today. Reporter Caitlin Eckard says sunflowers originated in what is now north america, grown by indigenous people. She oversees Educational Programming at powell gardens near kansas city. They would use the oil for their hair, the seeds they would, obviously, eat. Reporter and the stems . Really strong. Used it as a building material, believe it or not. Reporter in the late 1800s, sunflowers flexed their political muscle becoming a symbol of womens suffrage. You see the campaign pins show a sunflower. It became that symbol moving forward. Reporter now, kansas may be the sunflower state, but sunflowers are grown across the country. North dakota actually produces the most. And take a look at these flowers in the garden state of new jersey. But only in ellsworth, wisconsin, will you find sunflowers like these. This is big bird. She is so thick. As opens up it looks like big bird. Reporter steve kaufer known as sunflower steve, also the name of his seed company. Thats going to be a cool fall color, chocolate doubleflowering sunflower. Reporter he fell in the cut flower business after losing his advertising job in 1999. Traditional sunflowers eventually became his bread and butter. But in 2007, kaufer noticed a rogelberg sunflower growing in one of his fields. Its got golden maroon in it. Reporter he took 12 soeds from that lone flower and planted them the next year. Really ugly looking. They looked terrible. One looked like the parent plant and this other this dark maroon with a little bit of lemon in it. We take the hightech equipment. Reporter getting these flowers to reproduce is no small feat. Couldnt you get some bees to do this . I do have bees to do this. I dont want them to share it with the other flowers. Reporter controlling. Experimentation like this has given birth to blooms like gigi, lamar, marly and maleficient. Are you like a doctor, a Mad Scientist . You know, i think i have a natural curiosity to think what if. Reporter sunflower steve now only sells seeds and in limited batches. Mostly to home gardeners. Whats the only place in the world they exist . I mean, when you have something nobody else has, you have an advantage. Its taken 15 years to get there. Reporter kaufer puts his original sunflowers to good use, making murals that have become hits on instagram. As a child of the 80s, i love the pacman. Yeah. Reporter thats great. For easter, the jesus fish. And when they were done, my daughter calls me and says, hey dad, can we turn that into a shark . So they made a big giant 25 foot long great white shark out of sunflowers. Reporter steve kaufer has learned to be patient. Not everything is a success. He says his happiness comes from spreading happiness. When i see them and i think they are cool and somebody who never seen it before is just blown away by it, it just, you know, yeah, i remember that feeling when i saw that flower the first time, too. . Seldom do those names appear on a sul movie maruee, or tell a story quite so dark. Lee cowan on their epic new film. Reporter on the plains northwest of tulsa, oklahoma, where oil rigs out number the bison, a stain so dark, it makes the crude look crystal clear. A tragically true tale of mans inhumanity to man thats hitting the big screen this week. I was sent down from washington, d. C. , to see about these murders. Hmm. See what about them . P. See whos doing it. Trying to be as truthful as possible is the only way to tell these stories. This wealth should come to us. Reporter oscar winners Leonardo Dicaprio, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone teamed up with Apple Original films to bring david granns bestselling book, killers of the flower moon, to life. Its so simple. The front is the front. The back is the back. He has to make it look like he did it himself. It look like murder. Its not supposed to be that way. In this case, its not two done it. Who didnt do it. Action reporter its a sweeping epic. Three and a half hours long, shot on location on the Osage Reservation in oklahoma. Where in 2017 we joined author and journalist david grann. Scores of murders. We are talking about a very small population. Reporter killers of the flower moon took grann a decade to research. Each thread he pulled took him down a darker road. This is a story that has real evil in it. Evil like i never covered or venced or researched about efore in my life. Reporter really, that dark . Yes. Osage. They have the worst land possible. Reporter that evil showed up when the money did. The sainl land was long shout to be worthless. They out smart everybody. The land had oil on it. Reporter in 1920s, oil was discovered here, which almost overnight made the osage among the wealthiest people per capita in the world. Money flows freely here now. I do love that money, sir. Reporter like a managenent, it attracted outsiders. White men mostly. They came not just to bilk the osage out of their oil money, but to inherit it. The only way you could get their money was to marry into their families and then to slowly target them. Reporter this Osage Cemetery in gray horse lies the evidence that entire families were wiped out. Either shot, blown up, drugged, or poisoned. Ernest burkhart wormed his way into the osage family tree by marrying an osage woman named molly in 1917. You talk too much. Reporter their reallife love affair as troubled as it was is where the film begins. What was that . Thats how you are. I dont know what you said, but it must have been indian for handsome devil. The heart of the entire situation, love, trust that goes with love and this extraordinary betrayal. And still loving. Now, how do we do that . Reporter the short answer, carefully. We did our absolute best to listen to the osage community. I dont know if we did a perfect job. Who knows . But they embraced us and were so incredibly helpful and so vulnerable. This is an osage, typical of that time, that era. Reporter principal chief of the osage nation, jeffrey m. Standing bear, knows the risks of letting hollywood in. The americans always had someone else tell the story about us, but we want to tell our story. Reporter when we spoke with the cast and crew back in july, they were all on that same page. Especially Martin Scorsese. You deal with the native americans and indigenous people, youve got to make sure everything we do, everything we do is as authentic, as accurate, or at least as reasonably accurate from what can be remembered as possible. And respectful. Reporter so, to that end, he hired as many osage as possible, both in front of and behind the camera. They really worked hard at this, and earned our respect. Reporter you felt comfortable with the way they were going to approach it . If youre not comfortable with marty scorsese, you are not going to be comfortable with anybody. I tell you. Dont sleep anymore. Reporter Lily Gladstone has critics raving. I dont know if you love me anymore. Molly, of course i love you. Reporter she grew up on the reservation of the blackfeet nation in montana. She brought so much to not only her character, but the entire film. She was an amazing partner to have. Oh, thanks, buddy. Seems like its emotional four to hear . I mean, i guess i could try to choke it down, put it somewhere else, but why . It is. It is. Its a big responsibility and its terrifying. Its hard being a native actor, having this sort of, this much that you can audition for. Yeah, marty showed me whats possible. [ speaking in global language ] reporter the film called for her to speak fluent osage. Dicaprio and de niro had to master that language, too. The language itself, how hard was that . It was tough. I mean, he has the benefit of, like, you did an incredible jobnd a also did an incredible job of doing it the way a white man would say it. Thats my job. Reporter for hollywood trivia buffs, this is the first time that dicaprio has worked with de niro and scorsese on the same film at the same time. The two of them are so incredible together. Their shorthand, the way they communicate, its almost through sign language, nods, its this. I know, i know. I mean, its incredible to watch. Reporter you said you have sort of a shorthand with Robert De Niro. What do you have with leo. Longhand. Reporter longhand . For me, its a long discussion, grinding things out. Lots of rehearsals. Expecting a miracle to make this go away . You know they dont happen anymore. Reporter for david grann, seeing all of this come together was both satisfying and to him a bit mesmerizing. My world is not in hollywood at all. I, you know, i am a nerd 24 hours a day. Reporter we caught up with him just before the film debuted for the osage in tulsa, back in july. The idea that now we are standing here and there is going to be a film and more and more people are going to learn about the history, to me that is what is so powerful and remarkable about it to me. Reporter grann ended his book with a conversation he recalled having with an elderly osage woman. She looked out across these plains, she quoted scripture. The blood cries out from the ground, she said. All these years later, perhaps those cries will finally be heard. Ive struggled with generalized myasthenia gravis. Its been just over a week since hamas devastating surprise attack on israel. And thats put a new focus on tensions in the middle east. And just how we got here. Seth doane has a sunday journal. At least 1,300 people in israel have been killed in gaza, at least 2,100. Reporter the story somehow keeps getting worse. Israel vows to crush hamas. Reporter as we watch and read sometimes reluctantly, faced with the reality of yet another war in the middle east. This time sparked by the unimaginable brutality and barbarity of those surprise attacks by hamas. This is an act of sheer evil. This country was created in the aftermath of the holocaust. Its based on a promise that this state would protect jews from precisely these atrocities. This was the largest single incident of jewish death, of murder since the holocaust. Reporter michael oren was israels ambassador to the u. S. We connected with him from the bomb shelter of his home. Armored dor door. Reporter as hamas continues to fire rockets at israel from the gaza strip. The house next door was destroyed. Its real for us. We have all known people, seth, every one of us, who have been massacred, dismembered, executed. Its intentionally personal. The real question is what happens long term. Reporter robin wright is a contributor to the new yorker, and has been covering wars across the middle east for the last 50 years. I think Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thinks he can destroy hamas, but can he destroy the idea, the politics, and the commitment by palestinians who feel that there is no prospect down the road of a twostate solution, who dont see the restoration of their freedom, their dignity, their jobs, the economy. I think this is far harder than the kind of simplistic language that netanyahu has been using. Reporter still, israels defense ministrist ins they will wipe hamas off the face of the earth, but hamas fighters make up just about 1 of the population in the denselypacked gaza strip. Its sealed off from israel by that security barrier and now they are encircled by israeli troops and being pounded by airstrikes. Palestinian Health Officials are saying they are running out of food. They are running out of water. Israel is turned off the swif to electricity. There is a humanitarian crisis unfolding in gaza right now. The danger is that it deepens the passions among the palestinians who, even among those who never liked hamas, bus living under siege is really tough and the most important thing about the future is where are their hearts, their passions and their commitments, and a siege is not to help make them fans of israel. Shattered by bombs and death. Reporter todays conflict has a complicated, bloody history, with the roots in competing religious and ancestral claims to the land stretching back millennia. Its what all the participants hope, is the first step for breaking the cycle of violence in the middle east. Reporter in 1993, there was some hope for peace. There you have it. The handshake. Reporter israeli officially recognizes the palestinian organization, p. L. O. , recognizing israels right to exist. Hamas responded with violence. Predictably, the muslim fundamentalists of hamas took credit for the kills, calling them gifts to yasser arafat, the peace settlement and all the traitors. Reporter hamas, which receives funding from iran and is labeled a terrorist organization by the u. S. And the eu, came to control the gaza strip when it won parliamentary elections in 2006. The idea promoted by the United States was to get the palestinians on both the west bank and gaza to speak with one voice, elect Yasser Arafats party, the p. L. O. , as the government, which was willing to deal with israel, but there was such alienation and disillusionment with the p. L. O. That populations turned to hamas. And that has prevented any kind of peace proces because the palestinians are divided between the two territories and have very different ideas about how to move forward with israel. Reporter while progress towards peace has stalled between israelis and palestinians in a twostate solution seems increasingly unlikely, israel has made peace with several arab countries. Why are we seeing this conflict explode again now . Hamas went to war i think for a variety of reasons. Israel was engaged in possible eventual talks with saudi arabia, brokered by the United States, which would have been the most important Peace Process between israel and the arabs because saudi arabia is the guardian of islams holy places. Reporter in your view, why now . Because they could. And because we let our guard down, frankly. And we are going to have to address that. Fail that failure, when the smoke clears. Reporter michael oren thinks irans involvement supporting hamas adds to the risk that the conflict will widen. Born in the u. S. , he made his home in israel and says in the longer term he sees progress. I wonder how you see the prospect for peace . Is this just an intractable issue . When i moved here there was no peace with egypt, there was no peace with jordan, morocco, uae, bahrain, sudan. Peace with saudi arabia . We had no relations with india, no relations with the soviet oc china, with africa. Totally isolated. If you told me a half century ago this what israels Foreign Relations would look like, i would say, you know, what type of narcotic are you on . Really. Do not underestimate the possibilities and the hope for peace. Reporter for all of the heartache of today, im hearing that you have hope . Certainly. Of course i do. He is an expert on the art of war, and with ukraine and now israel in the headlines, its an alltoo relevant topic. David pogue is talking with retired general david petraeus. This is going to be a very, very tough fight. Reporter retired general david petraeus, who pacommanded americas wars in iraq and afghanistan, knows from experience what israel is facing in its war against hamas. I almost cant imagine a more challenging contextual set of circumstances here than what they face. Reporter sending an army, even one as powerful as israels, into the densely populated neighborhoods of gaza. There are tunnels. There will be rooms that will have improvised explosive devices. You have to clear every building, every floor, every room, every basement, every tunnel. Civilian losses are inevitable and tough israeli losses lie ahead as well. Reporter petraeus, along with british historian drew roberts just wrote a book titled conflict, defining a century which began on 9 11. This is far worse than 9 11. Reporter as horrific as 9 11 was, the october 7th attack on israel killed a far greater proportion of the much smaller population. This is the equivalent of the u. S. Having experienced over 40,000 losses rather than the 3,000 terrible losses that we sustained in the attacks on 9 11. Reporter on september left, 11th, it was planes. October 7th, it was thousands of rockets and fighters, even gliders. The complexity of what they did was really quite extraordinary. Reporter were you surprised by the sophistication of the attack . Yes. Actually, i was more surprised that there just wasnt the awareness of what was being planned. Reporter petraeus was one director of the cia and cant understand how both israeli and american intelligence missed preparations for the attack. This is a very substantial operation, and the planning alone would have been very considerable. But then the training and equipping and positioning of po forces, that all of that could take place and not spark much increased military readiness is really quite stunning. Reporter how do you account for it . Dramatic improvement in hamas operational security. Very, very creative use of these munitions and capabilities to degrade dramatically, in some cases knock out, the israeli ability to see what is going on around this quite formidable iron fence that was established. At the very least, safe to say that israel underestimated its enemy . No question about it. Reporter what do you think hamas hoped to achieve with this attack . What their leaders have said was to get the worlds attention. Reporter could the hamas objective have been as simple as kill jews . Oh, thats always the objective. Again, destroy israel. Reporter hamas killed jews but didnt destroy israel. And now israel has vowed to destroy hamas. Tell me how this ends. If the mission to the Israeli Military is to destroy hamas, if you have to destroy every headquarters, if you have to capture, kill the bulk of the leaders, if you have to do the same with the bulk of these terrorist fighters, the question is then, what do you do with gaza once you retake it . You cant walk away from gaza. Reporter if hamas is destroyed, there will be a power vacuum in gaza, which israel cant ignore. This is a very tough decision if you are going to have to reoccupy and administer gaza again, because, clearly, you cant go in, destroy the hamas infrastructure and then leave because, again, they will reconstitute themselves. Reporter what happens to the people of gaza . Well, they are going to suffer. And the hamas has brought this on them. We stand with israel. Reporter President Biden has promised to back israel to the hilt, sending two Aircraft Carrier strike groups off the coast as well as flying in fresh stocks of munitions. And with its own invasion of iraq, the u. S. Has also left israel with an object lesson in the perils of overreacting to a terrorist attack. We have made mistakes, which is what happens when a nation gets its blood up. Israel certainly has its blood up now. There should be a cautionary tale from our experiences in the wake of the 9 11 attacks. Some of the actions that we took, we look at differently now. And there will come a time where some of the actions that will be taken by israel will be looked at in a different way as well. You cant always get what you want its sunday morning on cbs and here again is jane pauley. You get what you need they earned the title worlds greatest rock and roll band a long time ago, but the Rolling Stones are still at it, still touring, still making new music. Legends, indeed. Talking with our anthony mason. Reporter you dont expect birth announcements from a 60yearold band. But last month in london, the Rolling Stones revealed they had made a new record. Dont get angry with me reporter Hackney Diamonds is the stones first album of original music in 18 years. Do you like working in this place . Yeah. Old friend of ours. Reporter at electric lady studios in new york, where the band worked on the new record, we caught up with keith richards. Is it like getting on a bike when you go in the studio . Pretty much. But you are not sure if the tires are pumped up. Whats he doing here . Im with you. Reporter over in london, mick jagger and ronnie wood joined us. How did this come about . Well well, my recollection, is that mick said what we need to do, lets make an album. Lets blitz it. We have to have a record ready to go out on tour. There was a deadline. So then we more or less did what we planned to do. Really unusual. Yeah, really unusual. I said to keith, its going to be finished by valentines day. Reporter how quickly do you know in a Recording Studio when you have something . You have to give it a minute. You cant be dismissive, but you kind of get to know in ten minutes, lets say. You know if somethings really will there and whether its worth chasing. Like a painting. You construct, do the first layout, then give it a breath. Yes. Come back and finish jigsaw, you know . I love that. Dont get angry with me reporter the lead single angry started with a lyric from jagger. I was just playing guitar in the caribbean on my own and just came up with the idea, and then i took it to the next level with keith. Mick and i kick each other. Yes. And i like that, i dont like that, whatever. Whatever it is, its a chemistry. Reporter but the bands chemistry was rocked. When drummer and Founding Member Charlie Watts died in 2021. Did you feel the need to put an album out . I think maybe because of charlies demise, that we felt that if the stones were going to continue, then we better make a mark of what the stones are now. Reporter was hard for you on tour to look back and not see charlie there . Yes. Of course, its hard. Its all my life, ever since i was 19, whatever, there has always been charlie. Reporter it had to be emotional. Of course, you have to get past that in life. I love charlie, but i want to carry on making music. Reporter last year, the stones toured with new drummer steve jordan. But watts plays on two tracks on the album, including one with the stones original bassist, bill wyman, who left the band in 1993. Did bill have to be coaxed to come back . No, not at all. I phoned him. I said, are you still playing the bass . He said, what do you mean . I play every day. Great. Come and do this track. Because charlie is on it and i like to be reunited the original rhythm section. It will be a cool idea. Time is on my side reporter when those original Rolling Stones first formed in london in 1962, they never imagined it would last. I cant get i remember when we had the first hit already record we looked at each other. We got about two years, boys. And then youve got to find a job. I know its only rock and roll but i like it reporter six decades later, they are still one of the biggest touring acts in the world. Grossing 179 million last year alone. We just are pioneers in a way that no ones done six years of rock and roll ever. Reporter ronnie wood, at 76, the youngest stone, do you paint every day . When i can, yeah. When im not playing the guitar. Reporter has a side gig as a painter. I am inspired here, for instance, by delacroix. That keeps me going. Wow, you know, we are playing music next. One runs into the other. Reporter his two artistic passions merge on tour. There is coachella. Reporter when he makes these set lists after every show. Its a kind of memoir. Oh, that was when that happened. Thats what we played. Reporter do you know how many shows you have done . No. No way. Reporter have you ever considered writing a memoir . I considered it and i have been offered a lot of money. Reporter and . And i have seen people do it. It takes like two years. They are living two years in their past. Reporter that doesnt appeal to you . No. Someone else will have to remember it for me. Reporter both jagger and richards have landmark birthdays this year. Yeah. Yes, yes. The big 80. Reporter richards, in december. How does that feel . I asked mick because he is six months older than me, and he says its not that different. Reporter jagger became an octogenarian back in july. Its a bit overblown. Its not all its cracked up to be being 80. There are not really options here. You either get there or youre not. Reporter you are in pretty good shape. Thank you, thats very find. Pleased to meet hope you get my name he is singing the best he ever sang, i think. Thats another reason we keep going. When you got it, flaunt it, you know . Reporter why do you think you guys have endured . I think we are basically we love each other and we love our music. And when youre doing it, you dont think about it. I think with charlie going, i realized more and more how special that is. And then there is something about the stones and something about us all sort of, no, we stick together. Reporter yeah . And then you cant just drop it, you know . You have got to follow it right down to the end. Down the tunnel, you know . Reporter you said, its bigger than all of you . Yeah, it is. Damn thing. Our commentary this morning takes us back to the middle east. Its from yuval noah harari, author of the bestselling book sapiens. Israel has just experienced its 9 11 moment. Entire communities have been slaughtered. My aunt and uncle are members of one of these communities, kibbutz beeri. They hid in their house as terrorists were butchering their neighbors. I received word that they somehow survived. Many of my friends have just received the worst news of their lives. We know three things about this horrendous attack. First, hamas aimed to kill civilians. Second, the victims were tortured and executed in the most gruesome ways the terrorists could imagine. Third, instead of hiding the atrocities, hamas made sure they will be publicized. Why do such a thing . Because hamas is waging a war on our souls, like isis, hamas uses unspeakable atrocities to terrify millions and to sow seeds of hatred and violence. Hamas is thereby committing a crime against humanity. It is not just killing humans. Hamas is trying to destroy our trust in humanity and thereby destroy our own humanity. A vicious cycle of violence now threatens to consume the entire region, ruining the lives of millions of palestinians as well as israelis. But the people of israel are stronger than hamas thinks. With the help of true friends like president joe biden, we will overcome the terror and the hatred hamas spreads, rebuild our country, and our trust in humanity, and stay loyal to israels founding ideals. John dickerson is in conversation with author david brooks who is wondering what life might be like if we all felt just a little more seen and heard. Reporter david brooks is on a oneman mission, aimed at no less than changing human behavior. So here we are on a Street Corner being watched a good chance to be seen. Emotionally vulnerable and seen by everyone. Right. Reporter so, whats your hope for this book, david . Yeah, i am hoping that people just learn to see each other. That there is one skill at the center of any healthy family, community, organization or country. Its the ability to see each other and to make each other feel seen, heard and understood. Reporter for the last several years, brooks has been on two writing tracks. His New York Times column addresses politics and society. His books have been an examination of character, morality, and personal architecture. His latest book, hhow to know person, and he is the first to admit its partly about how to know himself. Would you cop to your book being a selfhelp book . Im not shy about that. Im trying to help myself. I hope it will be helpful to others. And in my view, every book should be a selfhelp book. You should be able to learn something that will improve who you are. Reporter brooks is not just concerned with himself. Middle of some sort of vast emotional relational and spiritual crisis. It is as if people across society have lost the ability to see and understand one another. Thus, producing a culture that can be brutalizing and isolating. If we dont see others, what are the stakes . I think there is nothing crueller than to be indifferent to sunomeone, make someone feel invisible. Thats happening. The skill i am talking about, we dont teach it in school. Often we dont teach it anywhere. Reporter the books thesis, skills can be taught and if people can improve their one on one interactions in listening, in conversation and in what brooks calls the close at hand. It might have a compounding effect on society. You write about diminishers and illuminators. Whats the distinct . My theory is in some people are diminishers. They make you feel invisible, not curious about you, stereotype you, label you. Other people are illuminators and they are curious about you and make you feel lit up. Reporter to lift up those illuminators, brooks started weave, the social fabric project. For six years, the nonprofit has been supporting people who, as he says, are working to weave together the social fabric in their communities. We intend to restore souls. Reporter Renee Mitchell in portland, oregon, started the soul restoration center. Im always, you know, working with youth who dont see themselves reflected. So i have to give them something that says that i see you. I honor you and your experiences. She basically embodies everything i learned over four years of writing this book. She builds strength in people who have been wounded by injustice of society. And she is everything im not. Reporter the challenge, as brooks acknowledges, is that the forces of modern life, social media, partisanship, pull at our attention, rile us up, turn the other into the enemy. Even he was not immune to these forces recently. The now famous 78 tweet, its been seen some millions of times. Yeah. Reporter last month while eating at an airport, he posted about his 78 lunch of a burger and bourbon. This is where americans feel the economy is terrible, he wrote. The response was not favorable. He was accused of being misleading because the booze and not the food was pricey, accused of being out of touch, entitled, and worse, a post has been viewed more than 38 million times. Does that reaction surprise you . Its like every screwup i have made on social media, not too many, but like i thought about that tweet for, like, three seconds. And i sent it out and it started out as being a joke. It was like a picture of a meal i was betting a burger, fries and bushing. It was the least healthy meal i hope i ate that week. It was 78 bucks. The joke in my head was, i cant even afford to make poor lifestyle choices. The way i wrote it was incredibly stupid. So it seemed like i was oblivious to something that is blindingly obvious. Me as a New York Times columnist and a well off lucky privileged journalist, as if i am not aware thats very different than a Family Living paychecktopaycheck. Reporter brooks started as a times columnist 20 years ago as the conservative on the oped page. He says he has become more liberal out of sync with much of the trump era. The Republican Party used to be the party you werent thrilled by, but they were the business party. They knew how to run things. And that seems like eons or light years ago. Reporter you wrote after the Republican Debate that it demonstrated the disease of narcissistic hucksterism. Thats what donald trump has wrut into our life. Reporter what is narcissistic huck sterrism . Its like you dont have to tell the truth. You just j so tell the entertaining thing that makes you a show man how many human beings can take a mugshot and turn it into a positive . Reporter he thinks there is a not a small chance donald trump could end up back in the white house. I think there is a 40 chance that donald trump wins reelection. I wouldnt say the majority, but i take it extremely seriously. Reporter so does david brooks with the prescription to save us from ourselves or is he a lonely voice crying in the wilderness . One of the unifying ideas in politics, whether you are on the left or right, is that these are dire times and the wolf is at the door. Yeah. Reporter and so in those times do you worry is that what you are prescribing in this book, to see the other, is naive because people are saying, fine, but the wolfs at the door and i am not going to say, boy, isnt that nice fur you have . Well, i dont think the wolfs at the door. I found its very reporter everybody does. Left and right. The nominee. I found its very hard to hate people up close. All you have to do is show a little hint of humanity. They say, oh. Suddenly the wolf at the door stuff diminishes. Its not naive to lead with trust. Its not naive to lead with respect. Its practical. And so i guess i reject the idea im being like a babe in the woods in a world of wolves. I have the tools that are the most aggressively effective at countering the wolf. man that looks really high. woman it is high.
