Right now thousands of residents of northern gaza reported to be moving south ahead of a possible Ground Invasion by the Israeli Military. This follows warnings from israel that it intends to retaliate for deadly attacks by palestinian militants. And a san jose resident is trying to stay in contact with relatives in gaza. Why his father is choosing to stay put despite those warnings from israel. Jewish residents in petaluma gather for a sabbath service. A rabbi there says hes hoping his brother in southern israel can stay safe. Hes very proud to fulfill the lifelong dream of moving to israel, but its a scary time. Reporter good morning. Its saturday, october 14th. Im kelsey thorit. This morning explosions rang out and large smoke clouds were visible over gaza as the conflict with israel entered its eighth day. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his country has only just begun to retaliate for last weeks attacks hamas conducted across southern israel. Israel has since put the gaza strip, home to 2. 3 million palestinians, under total siege and bombarded it with air strikes. Israel dumped thousands of leaflets in gaza earlier, warning residents to evacuate their homes immediately. Those who could leave packed what they could and headed south. They were told theyd be granted safe passage until 6 00 a. M. Our time. U. N. And other humanitarian groups have called the order inhumane, pointing out there is no food, no water, no electricity and no where for people to go. The Israeli Military is reporting hundreds of thousands of palestinians heeded the warning and have already moved out. Images from gaza show a mass rush toward the south of the coastal enclave. U. S. Officials think there are between 500 and 600 american citizens in gaza too. Officials announced this morning egypt will open a Border Crossing for the first time in days to allow foreigners in gaza to get out. There are many here in the bay area whose loved ones have been trapped in gaza, hoping to survive whatever is coming next. Our betty yu spoke with a south bay man who grew up in gaza and who tells us why some of his Family Members say they wont evacuate. Reporter san jose resident sammy almafu is pictured here with his parents in gaza, a place where he was born and raised before he left for college in jordan. Its beyond, you know, stressful. Its i you know, i actually took the day off from work. I couldnt focus on my work. Reporter sammy works at a bay area tech company. His mind and heart are with his family in gaza. Most of his siblings, nieces and nephews and his mom fled south since the idf warned 1 million residents to evacuate within 24 hours for their own safety. His father whos in his 70s chose to stay back in the northern gaza home sammy grew up in. His logic was there was going to be bombing everywhere. So, actually, there wasnt even like on the way to his point, just go and stay with the family so they will all be in one place. He said what guarantee is there wed get bombed on the way. Just stay put. Reporter sammys brother is staying behind to watch over their father. Sammy last visited gaza earlier this summer. He remembers a childhood with periods of peace and violence. Gas on my way to school, every week or every, i dont know, when i was like 6 and 7. Life was never normal in gaza since 2005, 2006. Reporter now hes staying in touch with his family via whatsapp, hoping they come out alive. Theres occupation and theres, like, people for 14 or 16 years in gaza have not had a path for life. Yeah, they go to school, they go eat, they leave, but theres nothing. Health authorities in gaza say 1,900 palestinians have died in israeli air strikes, more than half of them are women and children. Israel says it has lost 1,300 people in rocket attacks and attacks on civilians by hamas. The hostages now being held in gaza include women and children. A berkeley phd student who attended a rally in San Francisco yesterday told us her sisterinlaw was kidnapped. These were the last messages she got from her as she was taken. At 7 30 she texted, we are surrounded. At 8 00 a. M. , she said i hear gunshots and blasts. Theres fire outside. 8 26 a. M. , they are shooting at me, mom. 8 29, i love you. I love you, mom. These are the last words we heard from her. President biden spent more than an hour on friday speaking with the families of the 14 american citizens still unaccounted for. Some of them are believed to be in captivity. In an interview with 60 minutes, the president talked about efforts to get them out. I say were going to do everything in our power to find them, everything in our power. And im not going to go into the detail of that, but were working like hell on it. Across the bay area Jewish Americans have been taking time to pause and remember the lives lost. Last night there was a vigil for peace in petaluma with many praying not only for the end to the violence but for the safety of their loved ones in israel. Andrea nacono talked with a rabbi who is trying to stay strong for his congregation as he worries about his own brother overseas. Reporter rabbi has lived in israel himself, but his brother just moved there two weeks ago to be surrounded by family and faith. Rockets have been directed at his neighborhood, but so far they have been shot out of the sky. This rabbi was just at a baseball game with his brother a month ago. Now there is constant worrying as his brother refuses to come back home. Hes safe, and hes certainly not going anywhere. Hes very proud to fulfill the lifelong dream of moving to israel. But its a scary time. Reporter hes been watching news updates to see how close the war is getting to his brothers home. The images from israel have been hard to watch but feels he needs to stay informed. Its not easy. There are hours of just complete emotional breakdown and realizing, turn the screen off, turn the news off, take a break, and then you go back and read some more. Reporter this visual was truly a call for peace as muslims, palestinians and several religious leaders all called for an end to the violence. Many in the Community Say they needed to be with others that shared their pain and see hope for the future. I have to, like, wake up and be a mom and wake up and, like, have a job. Its too painful. This is like its never been this hard. Theres so much pain and so much fear and hatred out there. And this Community Feels different to me. It always has. Reporter with hamas leaders calling for a day of jihad the rabbi says there was some concern about safety but felt it was important to hold fridays event. Officers with the Petaluma Police department were there to make sure the visual remained peaceful. We cant change the world, but we can change our community, our neighborhood and hope that that spreads. And there are also americans in israel who have had a hard time leaving as dozens of commercial flights have been canceled. The state Department Says the first chartered flight carrying u. S. Citizens out of israel has touched down in greece. Some 20,000 u. S. Citizens have reached out to the state department for help getting out. That includes a mom from Southern California who is trying to make it back home with her three kids. It is confusing. Were having to kind of facilitate calling the embassy, calling whomever we can to get any formion, and usually thats none. Jessica says she and her children have been staying inside a bomb shelter while they wait for instructions. Supporters on both sides of the conflict are gathering in cities across the u. S. Police have increased patrols at rallies and outside religious institutions. Cbs christian benevedes reports. Brian hackney fills us in on the ring of fire eclipse and why even though the bay area may not get the full view, its still worth looking to the sky. Reporter professor Jeff Matthews is climbing into , the observatory housing a 16inch computercontrolled telescope at Foothill College just got this fantastic photo of the sun. Reporter he does light up about anything solar. I dont think ive ever taken a picture of my dessert, but the sun, so many times. Reporter but he has never seen this, an annular eclipse. People described it as a golden ring in the sky. They just sound amazingly beautiful events. That was amazing. That was absolutely amazing. Im at a loss for words. Reporter it happens when the moon is a bit too far away to stage a total Solar Eclipse, so the moon doesnt block the sun completely, instead, it leaves a ring of fire or annular eclipse for a few precious minutes, and its happening saturday morning. But you can only see that golden ring in a path 120 miles wide, crossing the western u. S. Before moving through central and south america. From the bay area, itll only be seen as a partial Solar Eclipse. And to see what itll look like here hello. Id like to welcome you to the planetarium. This is where all of ow astronomy classes on campus are taught in this room which is using the star projector. And setting up on the planetariy view is seen from on earth. Reporter again, we wont see this in the bay area. Instead were starting off at 8 00 in the morning here. This is the view we get from cupertino. We got a little bite thats taken out. A little bit more, a little bit more. And what were going to end up seeing at the time of greatest eclipse, this is what the sun will look like, it will have a crescent of sun still visible. So what it will end up appearing like is kind of like the moon partially Photo Bombing the sun. Reporter now, the most important thing about the saturday morning eclipse, never look directly at it. If you are ever able to see the surface of the sun directly, you need solar filters like this that let you safely observe the sun directly. Reporter and indirectly, you can just use your nearest tree. A Family Member sent me a great picture from 2017 where they were viewing the eclipse beneath a tree. Every one of those gaps through the leaves ended up forming a little image of the eclipse on the ground. Reporter i had taken a picture like that of the 2017 eclipse. You did that too. It was just fantastic. Reporter itll be impressive as a partial eclipse in the bay area, but its at least a sevenhour drive to see the annular eclipse you know, a sevenhour drive for a onceinalifetime event, sure. Id say go for it. Plus, you know, theres all kinds of fun stuff to do along the way. Reporter and next stop total eclipse. Next stop total eclipse, that will happen in six months. Reporter thats right, a total eclipse in the u. S. Next april. This weekend, just a preview, but well worth watching, just not directly. Weve made it to the weekend, a little bit of cloud cover that rolled in yesterday has thickened overnight. And we are going to see more clouds than sunshine today. Even a little bit of drizzle possible, especially along the coast and north of the golden gate. But clearing, warmer conditions tomorrow before some more clouds roll in on monday. Outside, a chance of some drizzle, but not much to be concerned about there. And more of a warming trend by wednesday, thursday and friday of next week. The cloud cover overhead, of course, is going to obscure visibility of the partial Solar Eclipse for the bay area. It peaks at 9 19 this morning. Thing is what most of us are going to see, the best chances for breaks in the cloud cover through which you can safely observe the eclipse will be eclipse classes inland in the east bay and in the santa clara valley. But futurecast isnt too optimistic about that. Well take a look at that in just a moment. Itll be fairly damp out there for the first day Half Moon Bay art and pumpkin festival. Should see more sunshine breaking through on sunday, but with similar temperatures, topping out in the upper half of the 60s. Heres the futurecast showing that bit of patchy moisture here and there. Best chance of drizzle is going to be along the coast, for the north bay, maybe inside the bay as well, around San Francisco and clawpped. But then well see partial clearing taking over this afternoon. And as we head through tonight and tomorrow, the clouds will try to return tonight. Theyre going to get nudged far and far to the north as we head through the day on sunday, especially the first half of the day. Plenty of sunshine by sunday afternoon, resulting in a warming trend. Lets take a look at where our temperatures are going to top out, this afternoon pretty close to normal, especially where the sun does manage to peek through, around 80 degrees in san jose, also around 80 degrees inland in the east bay for antioch and livermore. Where the clouds are a little bit thicker, temperatures are going to be cooler but close to average for Half Moon Bay, in the upper 60s. Temperatures in San Francisco and oakland almost exactly normal, right around or just above 70 degrees. The spots where it is going to be cooler than average, where the clouds are thicker is where you have the best chance for a couple of showers. These temperatures running, yeah, several degrees below normal for the north bay, in the lower half of the 70s by this afternoon. Lets compare those high temperatures to what is average for the middle of october. And, again, for most locations outside of the north bay, everybody within two or three degrees on either side of what is average for this time of year. That is not going to remain the case in the long term. Lets take a look at the sevenday forecast. Well bring that in, and you can see a warmup on sunday, thats temporary. Temperatures back down on monday with the additional clouds. But then much more of a warmup as we head through the latter half of next week, even approaching 90 degrees inland on thursday. Temperatures will also warm up significantly around the bay. Now, were not talking about a return of the extreme heat that we had about seven, eight days ago. Temperatures topping out around 80 degrees in San Francisco, a whole better than the low 90s that we had for the couple of days last week. Temperatures along the coast are also going to warm up. You have the best chance of a couple of drops falling out of those clouds right along the coast. Temperatures stay in the 60s for a few days, then warming up with more sunshine taking over by wednesday, thursday and friday, back into the low 70s, even for coastal parts of the bay area. A spacecraft named psyche is speeding towards an asteroid after launching from Kennedy Space center yesterday morning. The spacex rocket powered the spacecraft out of the earths gravitational pull, then released it on a sixyear journey toward the asteroid built between mars and jupiter. Its heading to the psyche asteroid thats made mostly of metal, including iron and nickel. The spacecraft will orbit the rock for about two years starting in 2029. Scientists believe the asteroid is the battered remnants of an early planets iron core. It could help them better understand what makes up the core here on earth. We start this half hour with more updates on the conflict in the middle east. The death toll continues to rise one week into the fight between hamas and israel. 1,300 israelis and roughly 1,900 palestinians have died so far. Many in gaza are bracing for the worst as israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warns this is only the beginning. Ian lee joins us live this morning from tel aviv with the latest. Ian. Reporter hi, kelsey. You know, weve seen tens of thousands of palestinians fleeing south, heeding israels call ahead of whats being described as a major operation. Earlier today israel had designated two major roads as safety corridors for about six hours, but that window to safety has now closed. Time may be running out for palestinians to flee gaza city one day after about a Million People were told to evacuate to the southern part of the territory. Israeli defense Officials Say Ground Forces launched targeted raids into gaza for the first time. A larger Ground Invasion is expected. In a brief statement to the nation friday night, israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this is just the beginning. Both sides continue to launch missiles as the mass exodus unfolded. Hamas says 70 people, mostly women and children, were killed in an israeli air strike that hit a convoy fleeing gaza city. Israel is blockading food, fuel and water into the city. Hospitals are packed with injured people after days of blistering attacks. Here in tel aviv people remain on edge a week after the surprise attack. Hamas is holding about 150 hostages, including women and children. Dan moores sisterinlaw is among the hostages. Its a night mayor that we all want to wake up from. And the only way we can wake up from this is by getting together. Reporter in an interview with scott pelley for sundays 60 minutes, President Biden discussed efforts to find 14 Americans Still unaccounted for. They say it will just compound the humanitarian crisis that is already existing in that coastal strip. We are seeing morgues overflowing with bodies, so much so that ice cream trucks are being used to store the dead. Kelsey. So, ian, as you said, the deadline that israel gave these people to evacuate has now passed. So what is the Current Situation surrounding the evacuations in northern gaza now . Reporter people are still trying to move south. And you see them using cars, trucks, even docky carts, any way that a lot of these people can just continue to move south. These people want to live in safety, want to have a sense of security, and they believe that could possibly be it. But there are still hundreds of thousands of people remaining in gaza city. Its going to be a very difficult situation for everyone in that coastal enclave as that operation looms. Ian lee, thank you so much. An israeli air strike killed a journalist and injured six others on friday. Isa. M. Abdullah was a reuters photojournalist. The group of journalists were working along the border between israel and lebanon where the Israeli Military and lebanese militia, hezbollah, have been trading fire. He was providing live video coverage of the fighting along the border, doing crucial but dangerous work. Reuters says its seeking more information and working to support isams family and colleagues. U. S. Secretary of state Antony Blinken arrived in saudi arabia this morning. Its part of his regional tour across the gulf arab countries as he tries to prevent the current conflict between hamas and israel from spiraling into a bigger war. While speaking with his Saudi Arabian counterparts, blinken called for protection of civilians in both gaza and israel. Over the past couple of days, blinken has made visits to israel, jordan, qatar and ba rain. The Biden Administration says its goal is to build a coalition against hamas and secure the release of hostages from gaza. His administration is also concerned with keeping other actors from joining the war against israel following his trip to saudi arabia, blinken will head to the United Arab Emirates and egypt. Today australia held a nationwide vote to decide whether to give the countrys Indigenous People a voice in parliament. The final count came in short excuse me, a short time ago, showing the country has rejected the attempt to change its constitution. The referendum would have set up a new Advocacy Committee comprised and chosen by indigenous australians. It would have advised the parliament and government on issues that affect them. But the opponents who have now prevailed said the committee would create legal uncertainty, divide the nation along racial lines and lead to claims for compensation. The incoming new Prime Minister has promised tax cuts for middle income earners and a crackdown on crime. A live look now from capitol hill where republicans have nominated jim jordan for speaker of the house. The ohio congressman received about 25 more votes than he did earlier this week when he lost a vote to steve scalise. Scalise withdrew his bid on thursday night, but some House Republicans are skeptical jordan will be able to get enough support to win a floor vote. Jordan is a close ally of former President Trump and is not expected to gain any support from democrats. Kaiser permanente and labor unions have reached a tentative deal. This follows a recent threeday strike involving 75,000 workers. The deal includes a 21 raise over four years, it establishes a minimum wage for kaiser healthcare workers, 25 in california and 23 elsewhere. And in an effort to address understaffing, the deal includes a number of measures aimed at attracting and retaining highly skilled workers. But because of Climate Change and the rising seas, these wetlands could disappear by the end of the century. Anne makovec shows us how a pioneering approach could give californias salt marshes a fighting chance. Reporter near monterey bay within the Elkhorn Slough reserve. Thickening of seedlings. Reporter here this once lost salt marsh that looks beautiful. Reporter found a new chance to survive, even thrive as the planet warms and sea levels rise. What weve done here at pester marsh is build tomorrows marsh. This marsh will survive much longer than most of the rest of the marshes in our system. And then you have a tag there. Reporter scientist monique fountain and kristen watson, theyre part of a groundbreaking effort to restore the marsh. Were pioneering this approach in california of building such a high marsh forward thinking for sea level rise. Reporter in the past century, california has lost more than 90 of its salt marshes. Climate change with its melting glaciers and warmer oceans promise to endanger the rest. Those that remain here at Elkhorn Slough are really slow, and so with just a bit of sea level rise, theyre going to drown. Its just a really rare habitat that we dont want to lose. Reporter decades ago farming and other human activity badly damaged the marsh, causing it to sink. This project seeks to undo the damage by elevating it with lots of dirt. Weve built it up so high at the line of the king tides where it only gets tidally inundated on the very highest tides of every year, and that means it will be resilient for tomorrow and be ready to face quite a bit of sea level rise. Reporter so far the project has moved roughly half a million cubic yards of soil, most of the dirt comes from nearby hillsides where its scooped up and moved by a fleet of trucks. The restoration site where the dirt is dumped, tractor then take the dirt and spread it, building up the marsh. It is a living laboratory. We had a clean slate when the soil was moved in. We can learn so much about how marshes are developing, so its really a unique opportunity. That is amazing. Reporter the project also involves revegetating the higher plain with thousands of plants that grow in salt marshes, including pickle weed. This year weve seen hundreds of thousands of pickle weed setting out and sprouting and setting out and sprouting in our new marsh which is exciting. Reporter the hope is this will stabilize the roots, provide water, even sequester carbon this is what im both interested in and passionate about. I do like looking to try and figure it out. This unit students are monitoring how the restoration is taking root, and it gives them hope. Even if its just something small, i can do something to better not only this area but the world. And we are going to see more clouds than sunshine today. Even a little bit of drizzle possible, especially along the coast and north of the golden gate. But clearing, warmer conditions tomorrow before some more clouds roll in on monday. Outside, a chance of some drizzle, but not much to be concerned about there. And more of a warming trend by wednesday, thursday and friday of next week. The cloud cover overhead, of course, is going to obscure visibility of the partial Solar Eclipse for the bay area. It peaks at 9 19 this morning. But i think this is what most of us are going to see, the best chances for breaks in the cloud cover through which you can safely observe the eclipse will be eclipse classes inland in the east bay and in the santa clara valley. But futurecast isnt too optimistic about that. Well take a look at that in just a moment. Itll be fairly damp out there for the first day of the Half Moon Bay art and pumpkin festival. Should see more sunshine breaking through on sunday, but with similar temperatures, topping out in the upper half of the 60s. Heres the futurecast showing that bit of patchy moisture here and there. Best chance of drizzle is going to be along the coast, for the north bay, maybe inside the bay as well, around San Francisco and clawpped. But then well see partial clearing taking over this afternoon. And as we head through tonight and tomorrow, the clouds will try to return tonight. Theyre going to get nudged far and far to the north as we head through the day on sunday, especially the first half of the day. Plenty of sunshine by sunday afternoon, resulting in a warming trend. Lets take a look at where our temperatures are going to top out, this afternoon pretty close to normal, especially where the sun does manage to peek through, around 80 degrees in san jose, also around 80 degrees inland in the east bay for antioch and livermore. Where the clouds are a little bit thicker, temperatures are going to be cooler but close to average for Half Moon Bay, in the upper 60s. Temperatures in San Francisco and oakland almost exactly normal, right around or just above 70 degrees. The spots where it is going to be cooler than average, where the clouds are thicker is where you have the best chance for a couple of showers. These temperatures running, yeah, several degrees below normal for the north bay, in the lower half of the 70s by this afternoon. Lets compare those high temperatures to what is average for the middle of october. And, again, for most locations outside of the north bay, everybody within two or three degrees on either side of what is average for this time of year. That is not going to remain the case in the long term. Lets take a look at the sevenday forecast. Well bring that in, and you can see a warmup on sunday, thats temporary. Temperatures back down on monday with the additional clouds. But then much more of a warmup as we head through the latter half of next week, even approaching 90 degrees inland on thursday. Temperatures will also warm up significantly around the bay. Now, were not talking about a return of the extreme heat that we had about seven, eight days ago. Temperatures topping out around 80 degrees in San Francisco, a whole better than the low 90s that we had for the couple of days last week. Temperatures along the coast are also going to warm up. You have the best chance of a couple of drops falling out of those clouds right along the coast. Temperatures stay in the 60s for a few days, then warming up with more sunshine taking over by wednesday, thursday and friday, back into the low 70s, even for coastal parts of the bay area. A Young African american boys in the neighborhood were killing each other and still are. We got a serious problem in the city, and, actually, all across the nation. I would ride up into the up into the hills of griffith park. In the 50s, those were the years i would just like riding so much. I was trying to you know, working on training, i was working on teaching some kids to learn how to ride, and i thought, oh, this is what im going to do. But life came along. Nice beautiful mane. Whoa that woke you up. Reporter the last time adkins rode was about 25 years ago. Back problems kept her from going back in the saddle. So she joined the burbank Lindale Facebook Equestrian Group from back in the day. But the itch to ride never went away, even at age 90. I said you know what . Theres a lot of horse people, you know, and somebody maybe has a horse i could just pet. Reporter her post got over 100 comments and caught the attention of samantha kirkeby. I thought vellor was the best of my horses to let dee sit on them and to have a little ride and be safe. Reporter and just like that, adkins got back in the saddle. To tell you the truth, it was a moment really a moment in time that can probably never be, you know, matched. So that was worth everything.
