Fleet week air show. And two more shows are set for this afternoon and tomorrow. We see them on the ship decks and soaring high in the air, but where do sailors and marines go when they have some down time . We caught up with some firsttime visitors to the bay area. Good morning. It is saturday, october 7th. Im kenny choi. Lets start with a quick look at how much longer our current heat wave will last. Heres first alert meteorologist paul heggan. Weve got one more hot day in store for us today. The heat dome still definitely impacting our weather but beginning to shift which allows the onshore breeze to kick in, cooling down coastal locations particularly as we head through the rest of this afternoon. Now, early next week were talking about a significant change in the big picture weather pattern. A storm system is going to miss us with most of its moisture, most of its energy, but its going to bring cooler temperatures and a chance for a few rain showers late monday and into monday night. In the short term, we still have that heat advisory in effect for locations around the bay, down into the peninsula and in the santa clara valley. Make sure youre staying hydrated and find some shades when you can. The bay area had it all on friday afternoon, big ships, big planes and the blue angels, of course, not to mention a perfect backdrop of blue sky in San Francisco. But, actually, we came close to not having fleet week at all this year because of possible government shutdown. That was averted. And also because of the fog which sometimes lingers over the bay in early october. On friday, though, everything came together for a spectacular show and a parade of ships. Seeing those ships and jets feeling like a novelty every time. And heres a time lapse of the bay crowded with boaters, hoping to get the best view of the air show. But in between the big shows this weekend, the men and women of our military getting a little loose and enjoying some of the fun things our San Francisco has to offer. Betty yu was on the water, talking to some of them about their idea of an enjoyable night in the city. Reporter the high dive is just one of several popular bars across the city where sailors and marines are stopping by to kick off the weekend. I caught up with a few who are visiting San Francisco for the first time. The closest spot to grab a drink near the u. S. S. John p. Murtha a navy ship visiting from san diego is the high dive. Thats where we met daniel chavez, a marine who serves as a senior combat cargo assistant. I love the city. I love the architecture with all the buildings. Ive actually taken a lot of pictures of them, and enjoying the local parks around and seeing just how free you can have your pet around. Wish i do that with my dogs over in las vegas. Fortunately were here, and i love your city so far. Reporter we dont have casinos, though. Thats all right. That helped my wallet. Reporter the high dive said this years fleet week sales are much stronger compared to last years. But business still isnt quite back to prepandemic fleet week levels. Many sailors and marines we met along the embarcadero are spending the weekend enjoying the city and visiting tourist attractions. I came here with an open mind just to see what your city has to offer, and it has not disappointed. Reporter what sort of things have you done so far . So far ive tried a lot of the local cuisine, a lot of the local beverages and the epic steakhouse down the road, something for the first time of having black lava salt. Reporter Demetrius Rodgers who works in logistics on the ship said one of his favorite parts about the job is traveling to countries like thailand and the philippines on deployments. This is his first time in San Francisco. So far hes checked out Fishermans Wharf. I had some good food, about three pairs of glasses, and i went to a kandy store. Reporter includes these glasses . Including these glasses. Reporter whats been your favorite part so far . Just the people. Im really big on people, and then just interacting with everybody. Everybody is so friendly. Everyone is, you know, supportive of the military that weve had here. Its all special. It is a great week to highlight San Francisco. And when the weather cooperates, it doesnt get any better. Reporter richard thanks sailors and marines for their service. When i was younger and fresh out of boot camp, i had no idea what to say because im just starting around here. But now i appreciate the support that the local population gives me. The blue angels are usually enough to draw people from the bay area and beyond, but as our da lin shows us, the air show also had a lot to offer on land, and that was a pleasant surprise for some parents. Reporter the thunderous roars of the blue angels, the deafening sounds blasting above the San Francisco waterfront. Watching the blue angels, you know, the sound and everything is amazing. So its one of those fun days that we try to do every year. Reporter Mark Mclaughlin and his friend, jason, brought their sons to fleet week hours before the blue angels were scheduled to fly to take in the whole experience. The kids got to sit inside a fighter jet cockpit. I kind of like it because i like jets. Reporter many families didnt mind the hot weather, saying it was perfect to kick off fleet week. This is our third year coming out, and, yeah, its the warmest quarter weve had so far for sure. Reporter you got one in front and one behind. Its pretty hot right now. Yeah. The sun is definitely hot. But, you know, its okay. One more, one more reporter plenty of games and activities to keep the entire family busy, from robots to a u. S. Navy scuba diver, playing tictactoe with children. You realize when youre on the window, im reading it backwards and upside down, so trying to figure that out. So the kids will write something, and i will be, like, okay, i can figure that out. Reporter diver gage finn went to a fleet week event and saw a dive tank almost two decades ago as a kid. Now hes part of the navy. Its funny how it came full circle, and now im here in the tank. Reporter other Government Agencies join in the fun as well. Cal o. E. S. Has an earthquake simulator to show people what its like to have a 7. 0 earthquake. But everything pretty much comes to a stop when the blue angels take over the bay area skies and turn them into their playground. All eyes and ears focused on the fighter jets flying just feet apart from each other, plenty of spectators along the waterfront, folks on rooftops and First Responders watching from the top of vehicles. They say it never gets old watching the blue angels perform. As for mark, it was mission accomplished. I think its a good bonding moment for us and the boys. Dont worry, if you missed our live coverage of the blue angels, tune in to pic plus 44 cable 12 today at 3 30 p. M. And again on sunday at 3 00 p. M. For our special encore presentations of our fleet week spectacular. In other news, police in santa clara are looking for two people who they say were involved in a big fight in the stands at a recent 49ers game. Police say that this man and woman assaulted two other fans at levi stadium. It happened during a game against the new york giants on september 21st. The fight was caught on camera, but investigators still dont know the identities of these suspects, so they are asking for help from the public. They say that if you know them, please contact santa clara police. We have often heard the pleas for help from Business Owners in San Francisco. They say that theyre frustrated and have felt forgotten because theyve been targeted repeatedly by thieves. Now the Police Department says that it is trying something new to stop them. The sfpd is launching something called blitz operations to stop retail theft. Coming up an active volcano in hawaii is triggering hundreds of small earthquakes, and now scientists are watching for any signs that a major eruption may be imminent. And heres a live look outside before we head to break on this sa welcome back. It is 7 11 on this saturday morning. We have another exciting blue angels performance to look forward to later today. But fleet week is not just about the jets and the ships. As etai shows us, it has a very practical purpose. Reporter when Navy Petty Officer Matthew Willman first heard hed be going to San Francisco for fleet week, he imagined nights on the town and drinking like, well, a sailor. Lets go tear this up. Reporter he thought he knew the drill. Instead, he was handed one. Right now we are learning how to use all these different tools to break up the concrete. Ive never touched any of this stuff before, so its a lot of fun. Reporter matthew is taking part in a fleet week Emergency Preparedness exercise at the San Francisco Fire Department Training Facility on treasure island, a joint effort between sffd and members of the navy and marines. They really didnt tell me much. They told me to be ready by 6 30, and we got all the gear youre gonna need in a bag, and just ready, its going to be an allday event. Reporter the drill contains learning how to stabilize collapsed buildings and lifting giant slabs of concrete. It is super important to have. Reporter Jeanine Nicholson is the chief of the San Francisco Fire Department. These exercises she says are what fleet week is all about. There is a whole lot more to fleet week than just the blue angels which are incredible. Part of that is preparedness and making sure that we are training with our state and federal partners to ensure that we are ready for whatever happens. Reporter and while the navy is learning how to fight fires and earthquakes on land we find weak spots on the deck. Reporter the sffd got a lesson on how to battle fires on ships. We have a victim somewhere in this tunnel right here. Reporter the joint exercise culminated in a friendly competition between two navy vessels, the u. S. S. Paul hamilton, and the u. S. S. John p. Murtha. Weve got a tunnel with concrete walls inside there. The goal is to be the first team out with that victim intact. Reporter the pressure to secure this years bragging rights is on. Is it good enough to cut now . Reporter matthew is determined to bring back the title for the Hamilton Team. Lets go. Reporter its a highstakes rescue with no rules and no holds barred, a test of skill, speed and thinking fast on your feet. But then the murtha team in a daring move stole Hamilton Teams stretcher. You might think tensions would rise fast, but instead the two groups just fight it out. In the end, the Hamilton Team gets the stretcher and the victim. I think they did a little bit of cheating holding the basket, but we were able to get it off them. We got the stronger dudes, of course. But thats a victory. Whoa reporter having fun during fleet week while shoring up a win for preparedness. Were going home tonight weve had quite a hot stretch of weather the past couple of days of weather. We got one more day to go today. The heat advisory continues until 11 00 tonight for areas around the bay, down the peninsula and into the santa clara valley. Cooling begins to kick in tomorrow. Coastal parts of the bay area already cooled down several degrees today. But the real change arrives on monday. Its going to be cooler, its going to be breezy. Theres even a chance of a few rain showers by late monday and into monday night. Take a look at the 10day temperature trend for livermore. Still hot today, but theres the wild ride on the temperature roller coaster. That is a big drop in the course of 48 hours. 24 degrees off of our High Temperatures, then a slow climb back to near average temperatures by late next week. But as that cooler air moves in, we do have a decent chance of showers. Of course, were still a couple days away from that arriving. But a 30 to 40 chance of rain, well take that in october. Lets check out futurecast. And as we head through the rest of today, were just going to see a lot of sunshine. Theres the cloud cover sneaking back in along the coast as we head through rest of tonight. As we wind the clock forward, we are going to see that storm system, again, missing us with most of its energy, most of its moisture, but enough of it sneaking into the bay area by the time we run out of data here, midday on monday that we have added that chance of showers, especially looping the coast, north of the bay and north of the golden gate. Inland and in the east bay, in the santa clara valley, your rain chances are going to be a little bit lower. But thats a couple of days down the line. Lets take a look at forecast High Temperatures for today, and they are still going to be hot. Were talking about mid to upper 90s in the santa clara valley. That is significantly above average. In fact, record tying or record breaking High Temperature for san jose. Todays record is 94 degrees, forecasting a high of 95. Mid to upper 90s inland and the east bay, low 90s around the south end of the bay. Mid70s for half moon bay. Yesterdays high was in the mid80s, so thats already a drop, and itll drop even more for tomorrow. Slight drop for San Francisco and oakland but still in the 80s which is well above normal and back in the low to mid90s inland and the north bay this afternoon which is a good 15 to 20 degrees above whats average for this time of year. As we look ahead to the longrange outlook, if you want the cooler weather to stick around once it arrives, think again. The eight to 14day outlook from the Climate Prediction Center shows a significant chance beyond the scope of the sevenday forecast of numbers settling back in. So the drop by monday tuesday, does look like its going to be temporary. If youre looking for autumnal temperatures, enjoy them while theyre here. Lets look at the sevenday forecast. And well start with inland parts of the bay area where that drop is really going to be noticeable in just the course of 48 hours, from saturday, we drop on sunday, but the real drop happens by monday, and then its a slow climb back up into the lower half of the 80s by thursday and friday which is warm but its not excessive for midoctober. Around the bay, similar temperature trend. A better chance of showers, a few more rain drops collecting on our Virtual Reality tubes here on monday, and then we clear out tuesday, should see plenty of sunshine by wednesday. Clouds might stick around a little bit longer along the coast, and temperatures after one more warm day tomorrow are going to retreat into very familiar territory, into the 60s, although we do threaten 70 degrees along the coast by thursday and friday. All right, sounds good. Scientists are tracking increased activity at hawaiis kilauea volcano. They say the volcano set off small earthquakes in a 24hour period.
