Fauci about his work with the late senator and former San Francisco mayor, as they led the nation through an Unprecedented Health crisis. This morning your community station is covering the plans for the Memorial Service for the late senator Dianne Feinstein. President joe biden, Vice PresidentKamala Harris and u. S. Senators, pausing the work of the people today to pay tribute to a woman who served more than half a century. Feinsteins body lying in state in San Franciscos city hall rotunda. One hour service will happen today amid some concerns about security. But yesterday mourners lined up and got to be up close and personal to pay their respects and among them longtime friend and colleague nancy pelosi, as well as a man who worked shoulder to shoulder with feinstein during the 1980 San Francisco aids epidemic. Dr. Anthony fauci. We are talking to dr. Anthony fauci this morning. It is our honor to talk to him. About the days in the bay area that he and feinstein led a National Response to hiv and aids in the early and devastating days. But lets talk about those security concerns. Late word came yesterday of the decision to close feinsteins services up to the public and it might be because of some of the big names attending like Vice PresidentKamala Harris and another and other u. S. Senators. Shawn chitnis is live at city hall this morning. Even though people dont have invites, we understand they can watch it streaming. Reporter reed, good morning. That is one way to take part in the ceremony. You can watch on tv or online. Just to give people a sense of what is happening with those instability concerns. In the last 30 minutes we had to move farther away from the steps of city hall to meet the requirements that secret service have in place as they continue to get ready for this afternoon service. That is why they decided to make the service not open to the public. They fear the people will be so far away that would not actually be able to see or hear anything. This service will continue on what you are talking about , what we saw at city hall yesterday. A chance for people to pay their final respects, say goodbye to Dianne Feinstein , who saw the long lines that were here at city hall, coming out of the building. They went late into the evening. One of the people wanted to be here and be part of that moment yesterday was speaker america that nancy pelosi. Here is what she had to say about being there yesterday. She and i were not on the same place on the political spectrum. We had our fun with it all. But from a personal standpoint, my family loved her, we were neighbors, we are friends and my daughter nancy, we teased and said if diane and i will running against each other i am sure nancy would vote for Dianne Feinstein. Reporter we know there is a delegation coming from california, as well as around the country in terms of senators already on their way and the Vice President , who will speak here in person. She tweeted out that members of congress are part of her group that were on air force to make either way here to San Francisco. In addition to the vp we expect senator majority leader Chuck Schumer as well as nancy pelosi to speak along with the mayor of San Francisco london breed and Dianne Feinsteins granddaughter. Thank you for your excellent reporting. Marking history in San Francisco. Dr. Anthony fauci stopped to pay a visit to the long time colleague and friend. He was escorted in two city hall by mayor london breed. Long before he came in the spotlight with covid response, he worked closely with then mayor feinstein in the heat of the aids crisis. In the 1980s. This morning he joins us to take us back to that uncertain time in the bay area in response. First of all, good morning dr. Fauci. Take us back to the early conversations when that mystery illness showed up in the bay area, calling on leaders to respond. It was a very dark time as we remember with a great deal of pain because of the suffering and anxiety that was goining on , right here in sasa francisco. And what it really required was the kind of response that was led by then mayor feinstein, as well as the Healthcare Providers in the city of San Francisco. Which actually where the prototype of the really excellent response showing empathy and care and concern at a time when we did not even know what the virus was that was causing this disease. Much less had any specific therapy for it. And mayor feinstein, and later a senator feinstein, was a great champion when i was at the nih to getting as funds and to make sure reacted appropriately with understanding and compassion for persons with hiv. She was a champion as both mayor as well a senator. I have had the privilege and honor of knowing her in both capacities. She was an icon to us all. When you talk about hiv and aids in the early days and the probably presented to the bay area we know that problem asked for response but response costs money. And we know there was not a lot of money devoted on the federal level to this problem. This crisis that was filling up the obituary pages in the bay area. Tell us about Dianne Feinstein and her choice to fund it locally. We understand it was a huge contrast between the local budget and the federal budget for a couple of years. Indeed, reed. That is correct. The numbers themselves i think speak volumes about the leadership of mayor feinstein, as well as the spirit of the city of San Francisco. In the early 80s, when San Francisco was one of the epicenters of the hiv epidemic , San Francisco was investing under the mayors leadership , more resources into treatment and care of persons with hiv then the entire federal government. Is city of less than 1 million people. And that is extraordinary and quite remarkable that that happened. And many people forget about that, but that is the reason why when you think about hiv and its early history , you have to think about San Francisco and when you think about San Francisco, you have to think about the leadership of mayor feinstein. Why . In relation to the subject, it was for many years , a political liability if a politician stepped forward and advocated for more funding for people with hiv and aids it was not a favorable move to make. Was Dianne Feinsteins wide to be so bold to get the money behind the fight . Shshe was a woman of deep principle and caring. She cared so deeplply about the cit of San Francisco and about her constituents in the city. She did not take these barriers as anyway impeding her to doing what you need to do. During those early years. Of really pushing the envelope. Her leadership , the implications of her leadership are seen up to this day. I think about the people who benefited and some people lined up at city hall to talk about with response was for hiv and aids and what it meant for people in that environment. We know history tells us there were men who were outcasts from their families, not only because of the sexuality but because of this mystery illness that came up. It is very touching to think that the two of you worked together. How does that inform the conversation nationally about building bridges . We have a divided congress. People cannot seem to have a meeting of the minds on estate, local or federal level on homelessness or helping people with the fentanyl crisis. What is the mandate or the lesson from the life and Lessons Learned in the 1980s . That is an excellent point you make. If people look back, more than 40 years back in the early years of the early 80s, how people like the mayor and your own citizens, your own Healthcare Providers in the city of San Francisco, actually served as a phenomenal example of when you had a lot of pushback and which were doing. I know i was taking care of persons with hiv in washington, d. C. , during that exact time. And i visited often with my colleagues, mostly at the San Francisco general hospital, at the time. Some of the heroes of the nurses and Healthcare Providers. And the doctors , here in San Francisco were able to show that despite the pushback on some , who were puzzled by this mysterious disease , and actually were actually pushing back against the kind of care that ultimately these people needed , we had a meeting of the minds. Ultimately we all came together. Because we realized that all of us have the same goal , to take the proper care of people who needed care. It is under the circumstances that the model of what happened in San Francisco, as you eluded to a moment ago, could serve as an example for the kind of working together on all sides of the political spectrum to come to the common goal of what is the common good, in this case of the city of San Francisco, but in general for the whole country, if not the world. Common goals. Common good. Emphasis on common. May it be so in this country that we could come together and find common ground. To use the phrase that is often used when a person passes away from jewish tradition, may her memory be a blessing. We thank you for that glimpse into her life , her service, and we thank you for your time this morning. Dr. Anthony fauci, we appreciate you. Thank you for having me.
