Yet, somehow it does not begin to describe the pain he has been in since he was viciously attacked and burned. Before we go further the video is disturbing he said the man that was trying to stop him from shoplifting poured lighter fluid on him and set him on fire. You see it there, in seconds he is consumed by fire. You can only imagine how much pain he felt in that moment. What is so awful that was just the beginning of a very long road and painful road to recovery. Betty yu was the first to talk to him when this happened. I bow we do stories like this sometimes when a crime first happens and we dont get to check in on how the victim is doing afterward. I think it is an important moment to take the time to do that. His life story was drastically altered since that day, right . That is right. I checked in with him every single day since we first brought you this story. The clerk said that he still very much traumatized by the sickening attack and he has to take things daybyday. Right now, he can not even move without any assistance. He is comforted by all of the support that is poured in. Tonight, we are also learn that this suspect has a long rap sheet that goes back about 20 years. Reporter since 31yearold man, a store clerk, was set on fire by an alleged homeless shoplifter he has undergone multiple surgeries. He says doctors transferred skin from his thigh to his neck, shoulder, chest, ear. At first, they also feared he would lose his eyesight. Thankfully after the swelling went down, he still has it. How are you feeling today . Yeah, i think it is a little bit good. It is still a long way to go. Reporter since i first shared his story, he has received online donations and uplifting messages of support from strangers. You have a go fund me. I was happy about the concern about me. I want to thank all of the people. Reporter he wants to thank this good samaritan. A customer who stepped in and held down the suspect until the authorities arrived. His coworker, all tried to help by grabbing a bat the 38yearold burton, who is homeless, is facing felony larges including assault, battery, arson, robbery, mayhem. The Sheriffs Office said that he had outstanding arrest warrants and is being held without bail. The District Attorneys Office revealed that burton has six prior felony convictions dating back to 2004. All fences were burglary, robbery in contra costa, alameda and sacramento counties. He should get punished that is all i want to say, you know, so, so after that, nobody has to go through this kind of situation. He came to this country about five years ago when he was 26 years old said he misses being able to do basic tasks. You know, go grocery shopping, go to work. Reporter he said the store owner is helping him navigate the court process. He feels bad about it. I dont know what to tell him. But he was so worried like, he is concerned. He is supporting me. Right now like, i just want to come out of this pain, you know. Walk on my own, you know. He said that the owner is going to court for him and keeping him uptodate. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for october 9th in martinez. If convicted of the charges burton is looking at 14 years to life in prison. Interesting to note, sara, the suspect is not facing an attempted murder charge. We did bring that question to the da but, they did not have any comment. A lot of us were wondering that, why it happened. Betty, you cover a lot of stories with a lot of victims of all kinds of crimes. I know, i know i heard you say this one was especially emotional for you. Reporter it was. His story brought me to tears multiple times. It is just next level, despicable, horrific, no one deserves this. I can also tell by the feedback that i have gotten that he has received really from people around the world saying how shocked they are that this could happen. Yes. This was particularly cruel and the pain that he is in. I dont think any of us can imagine, thank you for sharing the update. We appreciate it. Still developing tonight, at least four people have been shot and wounded at a college in baltimore. Students on campus at morgan state have been sheltered in place for hours now. All of it still ongoing. It is a dorm you see in the video on campus with a window shot out. It is homecoming week at mortgage state, historically black University Parents and family visits students there. One student said he heard bullets flying by his head. The last day in this stretch it will be saturday when we see the moderate heat risk shrinking a little bit. Still, fairly widespread. As warm as it is going to be or as hot as it is going to be, not likely to set records, thursday or friday. The hottest days we have in store well away from record territory on thursday. The closest we get on friday a few degrees within a record from san jose on friday afternoon, five or six degrees in livermore and in oakland. Significant step up from where the high temperatures topped out today. Tomorrow, not the warmest day we have in sight. That belongs to thursday and friday. And then a sharp drop comes in for the second half of the weekend the drop, another step on monday. Below average temperatures monday and tuesday. It is a roller coaster ride. At the peak for the next several days. Temperatures around the bay, demonstrate a similar pattern with the warmest sticking around to the first half of the weekend and then backing down to slightly below average levels by monday and tuesday. Outside chance that as the cooler air arrives by monday night and tuesday we can see a chance of showers. Look at the temperatures along the coast. Close to 80 degrees on thursday and friday. Then, the drop sends you back down into territory you are more familiar with. Lower half of the 60s by monday and tuesday of next week along with the 2030 chance of showers. Sara .
