Talking about Dianne Feinstein. Her roots were in the bay area. That is where she began her career here to washington, d. C. We want to look back. We are mourning the passing of this political icon. She died at the age of 90 here in her home in washington. She is the longest serving senator. She was here voting to avoid a government shutdown. She was mayor after the assassination. She guided San Francisco through times even as senator she never forget her roots. So, this evening, so many people mourning their native daughter. We saw people leaving flowers out of her Pacific Heights home. Flags all over the city lowers, even here in washington, d. C. All of them at halfstaff. Inside city hall where she served mayor people had a chance to sign a condolence book. Here is how they remembered her. I thanked her for everything she did for the city of San Francisco. In particular. The bay area really appreciated knowing that no matter where she was, she knew that San Francisco was home. Feinstein was a trail blazer for women with a long list of accomplishments including the 1994 ban on assault rifles, also a fierce fighter for gay rights and helped guide San Francisco through the aids crisis of the 1980s. She meant a lot to the lbgtq community. Thereat is why we are going to go live now in the castro where people are remembering her and talking about her legacy. The mood here was somber throughout the day. I can tell you everyone here told us they feel as though they lost one of their strongest allies in washington. Barker shops are often places where people talk about everything under the sun. But today, there was only one topic of conversation. The death of senator Dianne Feinstein. Man, she had been ill, 90 years old. Reporter steve has been cutting hair at louies, a castro institution for more than a decade. He says feinstein will be missed. She was Ground Breaking in what she was doing. I mean, one of the few legislatures that was willing to support the lbgtq community. Got to appreciate her for that. Reporter steve was lucky enough to meet the senator once, a moment he remembers fondly. She stuck her face in the barbershop here before. She is very personallable. She tries to get around. Mingle with the community. Reporter throughout the castro, the mood was somber on friday. Many remembering feinstein as a trail blazer and a lbgtq ally. I feel loss. Reporter andrea, the director of the castro benefit district. She says lbgtq people owe her a debt of gratitude she is an icon that will be missed. We will miss her work. She was a workhorse. Reporter not everything she did was without controversy. She defied being put in a political box. Reporter former kpix reporter hank plante covered feinstein for years. He says early in her career she took actions as mayor that upset many in the community. She started out being refiled by members of the gay community. When she was mayor she vetoed domestic partner legislation, the joke at the time was that she must think domestic partners is a housecleaning service. Reporter in 1984 at the height of the aids crisis she ordered that the citys bathhouses be closed despite the flacket some Health Officials did not deem it necessary. Several gay organizations fiercely objected but she was quick to recognize the severity of the epidemic for a time her city budget included more money to fight aids than the federal government. They deny these couples. Reporter one of only 14 senators to vote against the defensive marriage act which defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Steve believes that the lbgtq community will remember her kindly. She was ahead of the curve that will be her legacy it is incumbent on the board to take action. In 1978, she was elected the first woman president of San Franciscos board of supervisors and after the assassination of harvey milk and george marcsone she became the first women mayor. Now, the governor has the task of appointing what is socalled a caretaker. In that, who will hold her seat through next years election. It is a tough one. It is also important for the governor to quickly appoint a successor. Oakland political analyst says Governor Newsom is facing a big dilemma. It is a big deal. It is a very big deal. There are not many senate seats available. Newsom previously said he would appoint a black woman but not representative barbara lee since she is running for the seat. She is trailing her two opponents if you give her the appointment then she kind of leaps over everybody else. Here is what newsom said on meet the press. That primary is a matter of months away. I dont want to tip the ballots of that. You are going to abide by a caretaker, African American woman. A few degrees warmer as you make your way north bay. Lower 70s, more sunshine peeking through the clouds. Even these are 10 degrees below what is typical for september 30th. Lets look at the forecast. Inland parts of the bay area, going to be in for quite a ride. For the temperatures running 1015 degrees below normal on saturday to several degrees above average beginning on tuesday. A mix of upper 80s and 90s in the forecast by wednesday, thursday, friday. Inland heatwave finishing off the first full week of october. Temperatures around the bay, similar trend. It is not as extreme. Even in San Francisco, high temperatures around 80 degrees by wednesday, thursday, friday, you will stay short of 80 degrees in all likelihood along the coast. You are going to warm up here. Used to sticking up in the 60s. Instead, plenty of sunshine, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, temperatures warming up to the lower to middle 70s. 70 degrees on friday.
