He is live bright and early this morning at Golden Gate Park with the preparations under way for the hardly strictly Bluegrass Festival. We also know that many of you will be at portola Music Festival at pier 80 and theres gianna my buddy with all the traffic. But first start with another friend of mine, meteorologist jessica birch with what we can expect for the weekends weather. All right, lets dive straight into it. Its friday and we made it to the weekend and boy, we have a cool start throughout the bay area. Clear skies over the Santa Clara Valley this morning. We are waking up in the 50s and later into this afternoon, the weather is going to stay mild for us and i mean were talking about 70s this afternoon. Beautiful clear skies and its a day to get out there and get some fresh air. And maybe a local venue and a local festival. In the 50s right new . San francisco and a mild start to the morning with a gorgeous weekend right around the corner. Smidge more. Petaluma at 55 degrees and 57 in novato. For all the friends waking up in the north bay also dealing with that beautiful mild start. Now into this weekend we go, if you are planning on heading out to hardly strictly bluegrass, 60s are expected for us, a little cool and mild in the Early Morning hours. You dont really need the layer but just in case keep it handy. I will say this too. Were putting saturday on the map. In those Early Morning hours as a light splash of showers will sweep through most of the community. Whats happening is we feel the little trough and thats allowing for cold air push in from the north. Temperatures below average this weekend and add that with a little bit of rain in the forecast. Not a lot but heading into Early Saturday Morning setup just some offshore wind kind of priesting up along the coast and to add to that some light showers expected. But its going to be a busy one in San Francisco as weve been talking about it. Weve got the portola Music Festival plus bluegrass and the golden gate commute into the city. A lot of extra city. In the park you have the portola Music Festival near pier 80. So Public Transit is going to be your best friend. Thats the best way to get to any of these venues because parking is limited. In fact, parking is completely unavailable not even an option for the portola Music Festival and at Golden Gate Park with people heading out to hardly strictly. Going to be extra busy certainly. So b. A. R. T. Shuttle from 24th and mission for portola. You can use bike valet options and ride share a good option as well. That feels like a friday, doesnt it . Hey, thats the music of hardly strictly artist das this morning as we celebrate bluegrass in the bay. Theyre on tonight at 6 00 as part of the kickoff to a great music weekend. We know thousands of you will be enjoying the sounds of the final days of september as our Community Comes together. Love that. I do too. I love music in the morning too to get you up and going. Shawn chitnis, well, he got a check out some of the lastminute preparations happening ahead of the festival and shawn is live right now this morning inside San Franciscos Golden Gate Park. We know that there are going to be more than 70 different acts that will take part in the festival on a variety of different stages and of course its that combination of getting to see legends as well as newcomers and balancing out what you have come to love about this festival as well as trying Something Different each year. Summer may be over officially, but this weekend in San Francisco, you can get a sample of the season you may still be seeking out at hardly strictly bluegrass. Weve been doing this for over 20 years. And its easily the most magical event i have ever worked on. Reporter only the second year back inperson since the pandemic,ers say they have plenty to celebrate as they bring people together in the park. Chris porter is the music curator for the festival and he makes sure to give people the bluegrass they expect as well as the music you would hardly consider in the genre. Want to find a lot of artists who are new and up and coming. And would be great in the landscape of hardly strictly bluegrass,. Reporter we have the chance to walk part of the grounds and see the approach they take to building a festival thats become a staple to the bay area events calendar. For chris, his job is living out a dream as someone who attended as a fan before becoming a part of the staff. When i got the gig, i already knew how this all worked. Reporter one aspect he loves about the way they do this festival, theres no main stage but different setups that play to the advantage of various partists. Including immersing everyone in the scenic venue that hosts them each year. You are just surrounded by this wooded area. And it just is a beautiful calm area. Reporter certainly a highlight on the calendar for many in San Francisco and beyond. That feels like just what the Community Needs in this moment. The city needs vibrancy and it needs things to bring people together. And bring some good vibes and good feeling. Reporter and so in terms of what you can look forward to this year, that might be a little bit different. Well told that one, theyre going to actually have a live Poetry Reading and also theyre always looking to have for international acts. This year they tell us theyre going to be multiple latin artists as part of the festival. All gets under way later today in the afternoon. Reed and gianna, back to you. Well, as we just mentioned also in San Francisco this weekend, the portola Music Festival is heres a live look at pier 80 right now where artists specializing in electronic music will take the stage tomorrow. And on sunday. So heres a little sampling of the kind of music you can hear during the weekend. You dont mean nothing at all to me that was for shawn. That was for shawn. With some of the noise issues last year. We spoke in studio yesterday with pete mar from bee sides and our buddy talked with the creator of the festival danny bell. Heres what he had to say. The biggest sound issue we had was actually across the bay in alameda. Never in a million years would i have thought sound from the main stage would have traveled over the water. But thats another i thing i learned. We brought on a sound consultant to do sound design the to make sure that sound doesnt travel seven miles across the bay. Its amazing what sound Technology Allows us to do these days. A lot of mapping and graphing and Engineering Work around how were going to set up the sound system and how specifically tuned. So cool though. You know, theyll get that wrapped up and taken care of. I love seeing people come together and you see all the crowds gathering. So. Fun. Im sure everyone is going to have a good time. I love tall live music too. Thats my favorite thing about music, brings people together. Thats what we love. Auto industry we know this, its one of the backbones of our economy and this morning, the Auto Workers Union is preparing to announce a possible expansion of its strike against general motors, stellantis and maybe even ford. That is, if theres not more progress in talks. The union went on strike against those three automakers two weeks ago today and what do they want . They want better pay and better working conditions. Well, that in our country is not the only stalemate to talk about this morning. If you are a government worker, you stand to see a freeze in pay late tomorrow. At this point a Government Shutdown looks all but inevitable. Gop infighting blocking spending bills while some of the legislators spent yesterday on an impeachment inquiry into president biden. Both the senate and the house set today to vote on bills to keep the government running at least through november. But some say thats just a mere bandaid. Well be watching this one but no small matter for 3. 15 million federal employees, more than a million are active duty military. The Service Members have rent to pay, mortgages, child care. So those bills are going to mount up and its an incredibly stressful time. The pentagons secretary there. Some of the Service Members are due to be here for fleet week. You have been asking us if fleet week will fly. Kenny choi went out trying to get answers to your questions. Reporter National Parks across the country including San Franciscos chrissy field need the manpower of volunteers to keep them as pristine as possible for visitors. Kevin marx is doing his part. Con fete fee and paper has been left all over the place. Reporter its not just federal employees who will feel the pinch. Theres a domino effect that will impact businesses and even groups like kevins company that set up a beautification and clean up effort months in advance with the National Park service. If they had no rangers here available to guide us and watch and monitor our work, we wouldnt be able to do this good, valuable nonprofit activity. Reporter gates are stilt open for pedestrians, but that could change. With fleet week all but consistent to launch, shutdown would impact events lined up including the blue angels. Now as we look live at San Francisco airport, we understand that screeners will there are contractors and they are not federal employees. Not that much of a concern on that part. Still remember though the air Traffic Controllers and the customs agents are federal blow flows, check your flight status often online. But two of the days got scratched because of the fog. But the longrange models going to be a sunny one ahead of us, lets start off this morning, clear skies just above me right now. You can see the Santa Clara Valley weeing up in the 50s. A cool start to the morning forecast and into this weekend we go, we have a little bit of rain that will sweep its way throughout the bay area. Tomorrow morning. Then we dry up nicely into our sunday forecast. I know theres a bike race going on over at walnut creek. I know theres plenty of events happening in San Francisco. We have portola, hardly strictly bluegrass, so much happening for us this weekend and you are going to want to get out there and get some fresh air, 50s right now anywhere from november to up into santa rosa and i want to show you whats happening right around the corner. This huge area of low pressure, its dipping down once again and its actually going to be bringing in just a light shower setup for us in the Early Morning hours tomorrow. Then unsettled weather pattern into the evening hours. As we take a look at the totals, if not that impressive to be honest with you. But hey, this is kind of nice. Especially on a nice Early Saturday Morning. As we head into the first couple of weeks of fall this is actually a beautiful trend. About 0. 01 throughout the bay area thats expected but heading into sunday we dry up which is perfect for anyone thats planning on heading out to levis stadium on sunday. Were expecting 60s and 70s there. Just in time for the game and 60s across the board for anyone else going keith fair on sunday too in San Francisco too. Last but not least, hardly strictly bluegrass. Showery for saturday and then it clears up nicely into sunday. Just keep that in mind if you are trying to avoid the rain. But i mean its gorgeous for us the next couple of days after saturday and were actually sitting here again. Throughout the north bay today were in the 70s. So beautiful weather for us and pretty much dry for the north bay. For all the wine country friends. 60s in the forecast this afternoon. Near San Francisco. Watch what happens as you head across the bay bridge though. 70s in oakland and continue to head to the east were not warming up too much more. 70s for us today and last but not least heading down into the Santa Clara Valley, gorgeous conditions today for our friday forecast. Sitting in the 70s. So lets pull up that 7 day map and start off with the inland areas. We are keeping that tube just on saturday a little bit cloudy and a little bit wet for the Early Morning hours and then luckily it clears up beautifully as we head into the rest of next week. Look at this warmup too. I mean, i havent even had to opportunity to really talk about this this weekend its mild and cool and it feels like fall. Heading into next week, it might as well just be summer if you ask me. Were talking about 90s in the inland areas and plenty of sunshine and it will be dry as can be and we see the warmup also for the friends along the bay. 60s turning into 80s right around the corner. Back to you. Lets get you rolling on the freeways this morning. Its friday light. Thats the good news so were not seeing a lot of brake lights or issues out there which is great. But a lot going on this weekend. Including a closure along 101 and that will certainly slow you down so make sure you get a backup plan ready to go if you are taking 101 over the weekend. This closure starts tonight at10 00 and extends all the way until monday morning at 5 00. So at least from that area, as you work your way from britton down to the redwood city area, thats where you are going to see some trouble spots there. So right at that exit all the way down to willow there. Definitely give yourself some extra time and you can use 280 as an alternate. Thats probably your best bet to avoid any of the brake lights along 101. All right, other than that, Everything Else looks pretty good. In fact were not seeing any brake lights or issues across the Golden Gate Bridge. But thats going to change a lot of people will be heading into the city for a lot of events so busy conditions for that route into the city. 280 extension as well. And for anyone maybe making that ride across the bay bridge. You are going to see some busy conditions as well for anyone heading into San Francisco. You have got hardly strictly at Golden Gate Park and you have the castro street fair as well and then you have also got the portola Music Festival happening at pier 80 not too far off of 280 extension. Heading up along the peninsula, 50s right now near San Francisco and upper 50s from novato north into santa rosa with low 50s just in the heart of napa. Now its cool for us this morning. But lets dive straight into the weekend forecast. Why dont we . Lots going on here in the bay area, we need to get prepared. Now hardly strictly bluegrass one of the most fun free events we have at the Golden Gate Park. 60s pretty much all weekend long but look at saturday. Take your eyes to that. Early Morning Hours were going to see a splash of hours as low pressure moves its way in from the north. They say lamar walker shot and killed 24yearold alanna gallant last thursday at the Albany Toyota Service Center where she worked. He later died in a shootout with police. Well, reed, some drama last nights town hall held by the Oakland Police commission after three commissioners were no shows for the scheduled meeting. That panel is supposed to be working on its short list of candidates for a new police chief. But the absent commissioners think the chair is mishandling the search by implying the former chief Leronne Armstrong could be reappointed through an unfair process. Without the full commission present last night. The Commission Chair decided to open the floor for the public to weigh in on whether they think armstrong should be among the names to be recommended to mayor sheng thao. You know, personally, yes. Beautying the city and trying to make everybodys day a little better. Reporter together with fellow painter gee, hes been commissioned to transform this dull cabinet into a work of art. And like any good artist, hes brought along his model and muse, San Francisco drag legend, juanita moore. When he first told me that he was going to paint me, my response was, i better be pretty. Reporter a queer Mexican American street artist, manuel is hoping to chino spotlight on a community thats been underattack in recent years as more and more states pass antidrag laws. People should know that were famous for that. Reporter manuel is one of dozens of local artists taking part in a new initiative to paint 100 utility boxes throughout the city. The project organized by two groups, the Civic Joy Fund and paint the void, is designed to fight the narrative that San Francisco is turning into a dystopian hellscape. Its been hard. Reporter manny is the owner of a local coffee shop and the cofounder of the Civic Joy Fund. He says the idea is to boost the local economy by beautifying the neighborhood, while reducing crime and fostering a sense of local pride. We need arracks mys back. We need people to return to valencia and return to the mission and spend money here and support their small businesses. One of the biggest rising stars in the latin music revolution is from right here in the bay area. La donna creating a sound that infuses reggae and regional mexican music but at the heart of that is family and a love for her community. Her name is but you might know her at la donna. Shes a singer and composer and teacher with roots that run deep right here in the bay area. Born in Bernal Heights and growing up as part of in missions diverse latinx community. The really special place to my heart. Because its where i really had formed my basis for cultural knowledge and practice and its also where i have been most active and been able to collaborate and really engage with the community. In a meaningful and relevant way. She believes strongly in unexclusivety and diversity which is reflected in her music voice. I think that my being a young woman of color, really was what prompted me to come into the industry and start my own project. Just because i wasnt seeing a lot of the representation of our stories and our existence and our narratives. And so to be able to kind of carve out that space and bring in, you know, queer culture and bring in activist culture and all these Different Things that make up my life, has been a privilege. Already sound influenced by music from different latin american regions. Having access to and a knowledge of so many different cultural practices, is what makes me comfortable and excited to play music. Weaving together bilingual lyrics, beats and of course regional mexican music. I grew up playing with my family band. Where it all started with more family when she was just 7 years old. Feinstein shortly after became mayor and you node she was credited with being a calming voice and calming nerves in the city after the shootings. In 1992 she was elected to the u. S. Senate along with Barbara Boxer and over the years really gained a lot of power and influence backing many pieces of legislation including that much talked about going toe to toe in congress over assault weapons. Yeah, and i mean, just a huge part of San Francisco being born and raised here. A stanford graduate and feinstein also had been in declining health lately relying increasingly on staff to function as a senator. Her sort of losing her thought process a little bit.
