Right now at 5 30, a live look at San Francisco, Street Safety in the spotlight in the city, at least 39 people were killed in traffic crashes in the city last year, and today, the Public Safety commission grilled police about whether to leave enough to stop dangerous drivers. The only measurement we have of our Traffic Enforcement is citations. By that measure, we are doing terribly. According to supervisor rafael mandolin, traffic citations have dropped 97 over the last eight years. He called the hearing today to discuss why , and urged the Police Department to come up with a plan to focus on the most common causes of crashes and injuries. The Department Says staffing shortages are the primary reason. He also point out that the drop in citations began before the decline in number of officers. Safety advocates say there are other ways to reduce dangers on the street, banning right turns on red. Kelsey thorne decided to take a page from new york city. Reporter Luke Baughman heimer knows the streets of San Francisco as much as anyone. He has been mostly walking or riding his bike around town for over a decade , and for much of that time, he has been one of the citys biggest advocates not pushing for safer streets. I am very familiar with all the different in our city, but desperately aware of the fact we need to help more People Public transportation and active capitation. Reporter luke has been involved with a lot of campaigns over the years, from getting protected bike lanes through the city, the reducing parking near intersections to improve visibility. But the campaign luke is focused on right now is the push to get a citywide ban on cars, making right turns on red lights. When i am crossing the street, there is not a single time where i am not looking to see if a car approaching the intersection is actually stopping or if they are taking a right, or if they are going to roll through the crosswalk. I have heard from countless people who feel the same way. Reporter luke says safety concerns over cars turning right on red is nothing new, but when a fouryearold child was killed in a crosswalk earlier this year, he knew he had to step up and pressure the city to make significant changes now. It actually is the reason i started this campaign, because i saw the city was not going to do this themselves. They needed the people to say what we want them to do. Reporter so far, luke says close to 5000 letters have been sent to city officials, asking for a citywide no turn on red policy. This week, district 5 supervisor, dean preston, introduced a resolution that looks to do just that. No turn on red is a very important policy for reducing collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists. It is particularly important for seniors, for people with disabilities, and for kids who are so often the folks getting injured or killed by vehicles. Reporter the tenderloin actually already has over 50 intersections that do not allow right turns on red. It is part of a Pilot Program launched in 2021. According to sf mta, it has been a huge success. The report found that 92 of cars followed the no turn rule , and close calls between cars and pedestrians decreased. Lucas says those are all signs that city officials should expand the program to cover the entire city. We would see both a real Safety Improvement , you know, people not being hit or injured or killed on our streets, and just as importantly, we would see an increase in perceived safety. So, people would feel safer crossing the street. Reporter supervisor preston expect his resolution to be voted on next week. If approved, it would give sf mta 120 days to come up with a plan to implement the no turn on red policy citywide. Luke told me he is excited to see the step forward, and helps those that sf mta will work quickly with the city to get it done. Sf mta tells us in a statement , it is prioritizing areas where safety risks are the highest, and reviewing the details of supervisor preston resolution. Tomorrow morning, the Union President is expected to announce which additional plants will walk out. Currently, 18,000 workers are on strike, but that is only about 12 of the total union workforce. A scary thought for parents, imagine taking your child to day care and finding of the place you love and trust is suddenly closing. Advocates say that reality could unfold starting next week. I worry what is going to happen to those moms now specifically the single parents. A single mother had to leave her job to take care of it is during the pandemic. Now, she worries she may have to do the same thing again because historic federal funding for child care expires this weekend, meaning Childcare Costs could soar , and supporters of the funding say day cares could be forced to close. I lose sleep over it. It is a constant worry. This weekend, we will to the expiration of a 24 billion federal covid19 pandemic support program, funding that helped childcare providers stay afloat and help to make day care more affordable. Mom alex megan says, even with the federal healthcare for her daughters so alex could keep working , was still too expensive. After running the numbers and assessing all our options, we realized that we would probably be losing money if we did send her to day care. Reporter according to the century foundation, a progressive think tank, when federal support expires, more than 70,000 childcare programs are expected to close nationwide. And more than 3 million children could be at risk of losing access to care. If moms and dads cannot get care for their babies, they cannot go to work. There is bipartisan support to extend childcare funding so more parents can work. The main issue, how to pay for it. Do we raise taxes . Do we borrow . We are running big deficits already, and deficits do matter. For look at what childcare has become so expensive in the u. S. , just head to the kpix. Com. A 20 degree one of from saturday afternoon to wednesday afternoon, back to a case of summertime by wednesday and thursday, for those warmest locations, mostly east of mount diablo. Around the bay, temperatures wont be as warm, but everybody is in for above average readings by wednesday and thursday, even along the coast.
