It was going to be a bigger project than one organization. Reporter jeffrey zurwick helped organize a coalition of six local Animal Welfare groups including the east bay spca and marin humane to help transport Shelter Animals to find new loving homes in the bay area. They partnered with Greater Good Charities to arrange the flight. The shelters are already full but jeffrey says collectively they cant absorb the extra animals to create room for an influx of injured or displaced pets on the island. By moving those animals here, that gives the Animal Welfare teams in maui the opportunity to take a breath, regroup and Start Building the longterm recovery programs that people are going to need there in order to take care of their pets. Steve ferguson said they are full to the brim with animals. Our current situation, we have a handful of kennels available that arent occupied. We rely heavily on the Foster Community to get them out of the shelter and into homes to get them adopted. That is stretched. Reporter berkeley humane said next weekend its hosting the single largest adoption event in the state where the animals will be available and most fees will be waived. It makes me feel proud. We dont get into Animal Welfare to do anything other than just save as many animals as we can. This is important work that we do. Samantha hosts the fundraiser called big sparkle brunch tomorrow. This fall sparkle accepts nominations for the holiday gift drive. They provide gifts for several dozen families all over california. You can nominate your local hero for a jefferson award at kpix. Com hero. Doctors are finding a new way to treat cancers. The approach is that less is sometimes more. They are trying to figure out which treatments they can skip and still give their patients an equal chance of beating the disease. Liz cook explains. Reporter amy is a doctor herself. Its not always easy being a patient. She is never without her yarn and lucky charms. A source of comfort during lifes hardest moments. I have my octopus that i got from mexico carved out of a coconut seed and buffalo is strength that helps me. These are the things that i have. Then i crocheted my scarf to be my armor. Reporter she is getting the second round of chemo. A frightening diagnosis discovered by accident. I was going in for a procedure to look at my esophagus. My doctor said you are over 45. Get your first colonoscopy. The recommendations changed. They will put you under anesthesia, do both tests. I woke up from anesthesia and the doctor said your esophagus is fine but i think you have rectal cancer. I was thinking worstcase scenario. What if this is everywhere in my body. Am i going to die. Reporter form i the fortunately the cancer has not spread to other parts of her body. But amy needs to undergo intense treatment. She has been here before. The first was sarcoma in my upper thigh. I spent a year with intensive chemotherapy and radiation and surgery in the middle of it. That was full court press. I did everything before. Reporter intense radiation for her sarcoma left her with permanent nerve damage. I havent walked completely normal license then. One leg is weaker than the other. Reporter this time around the treatment may not need to be as debilitating. Her treatment may her oncologist led a trial that found when it comes to treating many patients with rectal cancer, less is more. Over the years we learned that we can cure patients with cancer. But we recognize that we may be overtreating patients, too much therapy in our zeal to cure the patients. Perhaps we could get away with less treatment if we stepped back. Reporter the trial followed 1100 patients over eight years and found that some patients didnt have to go through radiation to cure the cancer. Its fair to say that every study we do, we look at what are called interim results. Right now we are convinced there is no compromise in patients survival in the risk of recurrent cancer. Over time we will make sure that is the case. But we will see if not having had radiation in a subset of patients may change and improve the quality of life for the patients down the road. Reporter this was welcome news to amy. Im 46. Im not super old. I consider myself youngish and healthyish. If i cannot have to do all three modalities of treatment, this would be great. Reporter amy and the doctor are Still Deciding what she will do to treat her cancer. It depends on how her body responds to chemo. In the meantime, she will continue to crochet. She hands out octopuses to nurses, flight attendants and complete strangers. My positive attitude got me through my last cancer. I am not always as positive as when im around other people but i am trying to experience both sides this time and let myself be afraid but also, you know, get done what hi need to get done and talk to the people i need to so i can make the best decisions for myself. For amy, making others smile is medicine. With cancers among younger americans on the rise, quality of life issues take on added importance. Amy is 46 years old.
