Lot of hate, but we found someone who says they treat him better than cars with drivers. From kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. Hello, im sara donchey. Tonight we start with a Weather Forecast that will probably stop you in your tracks. When have you ever heard about a hurricane heading toward the west coast . We should say its a major hurricane for now. It will likely be a Tropical Storm by the time it makes landfall in california, but that hasnt happened in 84 years. Paul is joining us to explain all of this. You like to be very technical about these things. Well leave that to you. But just hearing about this is so interesting. Yeah, its one of those things that rarely occurs. There was the remnants of a tropical system last summer, but this is a different magnitude. Folks are preparing for it, trying to shore up the cliff sides and prepare for the flooding threat, prepare for the landslide threat, piling up sandbags in areas that recently had landslides. Yeah, in Orange County specifically is where were seeing the video here. I know its probably too early to tell definitivety where things could get bad, thats always on issue, but when do you think this could come our way, and what kind of impacts should we expect . Southern california will get major impacts. Minor issues for the bay area. It will avoid the bay area in terms of the worst potential. This storm is a major category 4 hurricane. Just got a new update at the top of the hour. 140 Miles Per Hour sustained winds. Almost completely symmetrical at this point. The more organized it looks, the stronger it probably is. It will stay over warm water in the 80s and 90s, maintain the strength at a cat 4 for another 24 to 36 hours. But then as it goes up the west coast of the baja peninsula, it will encounter cooler water and rapidly lose strength. By saturday night, it will be down to Tropical Storm strength, but it will maintain that moving into Southern California for the First Time Since 1939. Then it races to the north bringing heavy rain along its path. Theres already a moderate risk of excessive rainfall outlined for interior portions of the Southern California basically meaning a significant flooding threat due to the amount of rain well see falling over the course of about 24 to 48 hours, especially for the inland parts, the desert parts of Southern California. More than four inches of rain is a year or two worth of rainfall. But closer to the coast, two to four inches of rain in the Higher Elevations farther inland from los angeles and san diego, but along the coast significant impacts in all likelihood. Less than a quarter inch for the bay area. Its not even locked in well see any shower activity. The best chance is further south and east. San jose rain chances peak monday. All right, paul, well continue to keep an eye on that. Tonight, ten former east Bay Police Officers are on the other side of the law charged with all kinds of wild things like falsifying College Credits and selling steroids. Five antioch Police Officers and five from pittsburg have been indicted. Theyre accused of excess ty force, egging each other on to use violence, sharing photos with each other of people they injured. One of the men is accused of Excessive Force with his canine. Antioch police were already in the midst of air racist text message scandal with more than half their officers on leave because of that, and their chief retired this month. The acting chief said tonight that this announcement is disheartening. Fed up antioch residents say the arrests are just a step in the right direction. The voices will be louder, the screams will be louder, the pain will come out. Thats what we need to heal. To heal, we need to let it out. Im not celebrating. Im simply acknowledging that officers are not above the law. They are not god. And im thankful that a few of them went to jail. Antiochs mayor called this a dark day in the citys history and the beginning of the end of this long process. Tonight weve learned San Jose Police will be on campus at James Lick High School tomorrow after a stabbing put two students in the hospital. The principal also sent a note to staff saying Effective Immediately all gates will be locked by 9 30 a. M. And entrances supervised. I heard about it through the intercom. They said code blue that theyre putting the lockdown, and some friends told me a kid got stabbed. I think its sad and heartbreaking. The students stabbed are both recovering, but one does have serious injuries. And important to note that so far nobody has been arrested for the school stabbing. At a debrief afterward, teachers said they were begging for fencing and a School Resource officer because this isnt the first time this has happened. Ten days ago, they said two carloads of people drove onto campus and assaulted students and staff. Gun violence has taken its toll across california and the nation, and the bay area is no exception. Families have suffered in ways that most of us cant imagine. As max darrow reports, it comes amid a mothers fight for justice 17 years after her son was murdered in San Francisco. Reporter this is not an easy walk for Paulette Brown to make. The grief never ends. Reporter but its one shes made for 17 years. Its just like yesterday to me. Reporter august 14th, 2016, her son aubrey was shot and killed here at the intersection of baker and grove in San Francisco. 17 years later, the case remains an unsolved homicide. I miss him so much. Reporter she routinely puts his picture here in the hopes that someone who knows something will come forward with the Information Police need to crack the case. So my love for my son is driving me to keep pushing for justice. I need justice. I need some closure. Which i have none right now. Reporter closure for an act of sense lens gun violence. Were losing our children. My son should be burying me, not me burying him. No one has a right to pick up a gun and take someones life. An innocent life. Reporter brown is far from alone in her grief and pursuit for justice. This is a Significant Public Health Issue and Public Safety issue. Reporter rodriguez is with the hope and heal fund, a Group Seeking communitybased approaches to preventing gun violence in california. In collaboration with kaiser, his team Just Launched this interactive map that shows when and where gun homicides are taken place across california. This has been, at least in my community, since i was a young person. And its been an issue that folks and systems have not addressed, so i real really try to do my best to have solutions. Reporter rodriguez hopes this map will improve transparency and serve as a tool for people to see a real picture of how gun violence effects their community to purr solutions. That data should be available, and i think communities can then make their decisions on how they want to address this. Reporter starting with the drum circle, Police Officers and leaders joined brown to remember aubrey, honor his memory, keep the investigation alive, and come together as a community pleading for solution. These murders need to stop. And its going to take us to do it. Reporter while brown wants justice for aubrey its not just about my son. Its about everything. Reporter she hopes those impacted by gun violence and those still waiting for justice can stand together and empower each other and never give up. Im my sons voice now. Reporter 17 years later, browns pain is still present. But whats more apparent is her love for her son. I know hes looking down and saying mom, im so proud of you mom. Keep doing what youre doing, but stay happy, take care of yourself, mom. So max, what do we know about the case as it stands today . The case is still activity being investigated. According to cold case investigators, interviews were conducted as recently as december for this case. Sometimes with cold cases, they just need that one piece of information that can really help crack if case. In terms of this case, theyre still activity looking for information. Theres a 250,000 reward for information leading to the prosecution and arrest of a person or persons responsible for aubreys death, and obviously shes just hoping for justice. I dont think shell ever give up looking for it. I can imagine. Thank you so much. This smash and grab thief struck right when you least expect it, when the victim was getting into his car. Would you have had time to react in this situation . Reporter weve heard a lot about robo taxis getting into trouble around the city, but one group says theyre better than uber. Why the lack of a driver makes a difference they say. Dancing and singing okay, i completely revised the org chart. Now where do i go . Well, how about right. There . I report to the new breakfast taco . Well, it does have jimmy dean sausage. But its a taco. Get my new breakfast taco for just 1. 49. Trust falls . Really . Ah, come on, jack. Itll be great for morale. If i wanted to raise morale, id offer a choice of two sandwiches, plus curly fries, a taco, and a drink for only 6. Fantastic. Thanks, jack i trusted you guys. Try my 6 jack pack today. Usually you think of car smash and grabs when people leave their car alone, but this one happened when a guy was getting into his car. Someone walked up from behind, and in the blink of the eye, he smashes the passenger side window, grabs the bag and runs off. The driver tried to open the door, back up, but the thief was already gone. A San Francisco street performer is back after thieves stole the very thing he uses to make a living. Youve probably heard les singing and playing drums over the last 15 years, but someone stole all of his equipment. Thanks to a fundraiser, though, generous donations got him back on his feet. Im still upset about what happened, but im trying to get that out of my head and trying to move forward. Everybody come on down and make this happen. This party, lets get it back where we were. Les says hes grateful for all of the help and support that hes been getting so he can perform again. Now weather, a lot to get to, paul. Weve had a lot to discuss in the last couple of days than we have in awhile. Thats what happens when a hurricane heads to california. I cant even believe were saying that. Yeah, its just the speed of the system. Its not going to lose enough strength before it moves in to completely fall apart. As we finish the work week, we have the remnants of the last tropical system, eugene, hanging as a remnant area of low pressure sending the tropical moisture across the area leading to pop up showers and thunder showers, and thats still possible. Then eventually the remnants of hilary approach from the south. But its the battle between these two systems that determines what happens in the bay area because these cannot occupy the same space. The fact this is happening so close to the bay area will direct hilary further east and minimize its impacts around our neck of the woods. Around the bay area, i think the most well see is shower activity. Lets look at futurecast. As we head through the rest of tonight and into tomorrow, the best chance of pop up showers is again over the high sierra and the mountains of northern california. Cant rule it out. Especially over the diablo range. Then through saturday night and sunday, the first waves of moisture moving into Southern California. Initially light showers, but look at the rain becoming more intense, more widespread. That is going to happening throughout the day on sunday with the heaviest rain likely to fall sunday night into monday. In terms of the impacts on the bay area, we have to look at the two main forecast models. Well wind the clock forward because were still 72 hours out. One model says we have a chance of showers sunday. Another says we stay dry. As the bulk of hilary approaches, the models are still changing their mind. It looks like if we get rain it will be the further south and east you go in the bay area. Were also having to monitor air quality with smoke from the head fire burning drifting down into the skies over the north bay tomorrow. No worse than moderate air quality the next few days, but might be more widespread. Seeing the fog spreading outside. Temperatures heading into the 60s across the board, mostly where they stay due to the mugginess in the atmosphere. Low to mid60s waking um tomorrow. Still a noticeable level of humidity in the atmosphere, but at least youre within a degree or two of average for this time of year. Temperatures will be warming up a little bit, even with the additional cloud cover associated with the tropical system sunday, monday, and tuesday, were not putting any rain drop icons in the forecast just yet because the rain chances are lower than 50 50. Theres a good chance it slides to the east without sending any direct impact into the bay area other than clouds for the first half of next week. Reporter the experience is deeper than point a to point b. I feel at home. It means i feel like im not closed off from society. It means there are advocates out there working towards me traveling independently and working towards things that i thought were only a dream. Reporter matt passes cars with drivers floored by the driverless vehicle opening a new world of access and a boost of reassurance that hell be treated just like every other passenger. Really interesting perspective and something we dont hear all the time. Im sure hes heard the complaints Autonomous Vehicles in San Francisco. Does he see that and have any issues himself . He told me hes not experienced any negative moments with cruise so far, but does acknowledge that they have happened with other riders. He says that he thinks a lot of people may focus a little too much on the down sides of cruise, but his choice is to focus on the positives. Thank you so much, appreciate it.
