Event in this part of San Francisco, so why is the city trying to move the Farmers Market out . As people sift through the remains of more than 2200 buildings burned to the ground. Good evening. I am andrea nakano. We begin with lightning in the east bay. He was aiming his camera east towards the San Joaquin Valley when he got the electrifying pictures. As for what happens next, here is darren peck. This looks really messy on radar because the National Weather service has it on its most sensitive settings. Most of this is nothing but you can see a very thin line of thunderstorms moving across Contra Costa County. You see the darker shades of green with the yellow and orange going right across Contra Costa County and into marin county . If we clear out most of the clutter, you see what the radar is reading on top. The bottom line is that was a welldefined and somewhat confined line of storms that went through that part of the bay. We saw this coming at 6 00. We were watching the thunderstorms being blown off the sierra and it did not look likely that they would hold together and get here, but one of the forecast models that was more bullish than the others and said you are going to have some was this one. Highrevolution rapid refresh. As we get into tomorrow morning, same spot. Another line of isolated thunderstorms moving through parts of Contra Costa County and marin county. Very limited. It is not going to happen exactly like that in that place at exactly that time, but if the forecast model is convinced enough that the ingredients are there, we will watch it. I will tell you how this is all happening and what will finally turn off and we will talk about the rest of the weather as well in our complete first alert forecast in a few minutes, guys. Thanks, darren. The 15th year of outside lenses in the books. Local restaurants, hotels and other businesses are expecting a economic boost, which is why festival organizers hope to extend and expand next years festival. Betty yu talked with local organizers at the festival about what they have done this year. Reporter outside lands is now in its 15th year. In that time the festival says it has generated 1 billion for the San Francisco economy. Over three days, more than 225,000 people descended on Golden Gate Park for music, food and fun. The festival said that about half the attendees came from outside the bay area. It created jobs, employment and revenue for Small Businesses, including nearly 100 local restaurants. Among this years new comers , vegan tacos and poblano mac cheese. When we got here it was above and beyond our expectations because we had a line the entire time. We basically met our quote of the very first day. Reporter Javier Herrera is part of the nonprofit which helps upandcoming food entrepreneurs who are women or minorities grow their businesses. He is one of three eateries sharing a booth. I was not necessarily sure what made the prophet, because outside lands takes 30 off every sale. We did not have any experience. Reporter javier runs the business with his wife and sisterinlaw. It took two days to cover his costs for the food, supplies and equipment rentals, but the exposure has been invaluable. We checked out instagram at the end of the night and we saw so many messages that said hey, can we make a post about your food . Reporter the city said that it may add a second week of concerts put on at the polo fields using the outside lands infrastructure. The proposal will go before the board of supervisors in september. The San Francisco recreation and Parks Department said organizers are planning for three downtown concerts. They say they want to return next year and hope to have their own stand. Outside lands is definitely a music festival, but i have never seen a Food Festival with this many places and this many options. It is amazing. I feel like we are going to be able to lead a movement where next year there is even more vacant spots there. There is breaking news in that area tonight. Homicide detectives are near the area where the concerts were held. Police said the body of a woman was discovered at fulton and 22nd avenue near Golden Gate Park at about 7 30 p. M. Officers were seen in the area tonight carrying a canopy to the crime scene. No other information has been released. In san jose, one person is dead after a car crash early this morning on story road. Police said the driver hit a parked car and died at the scene. The crash is the 30th fatal collision of the year. Steered moments for a father and son at a car show in fremont. They were run over by one of the participants. Devin fehely has the details. I was sitting here with my friends enjoying the car show and the rev of an engine caught our attention. Reporter ricky rojas said he saw the classic car reverse into a pole and then plow into a father and son on their bicycles. The poor kid got sandwiched between under the vehicle and the bicycle. Reporter ricky said he rushed over to help the injured boy, who he estimates was 10 to 12 years old. The kid was tangled up with the bicycle break cables. I went ahead and released the break cables and the kid was able to get out. Reporter ricky said he was just at the right place at the right time. He said the boy and his father were taken to the hospital to get checked out. It is always good to help out others in need. And this lucky dog is safe home tonight after San Francisco firefighters saved him from a cliff. They said yoga the dog was uninsured and is now recovering with extra treats and snuggles. Business owners in oakland continue to voice frustration about crime in the area and the lack of response from city hall. Donna lynne talked with an owner who said their store have been hit with burglars 10 times in recent years. Reporter this store, lucky seven cigarettes, is not feeling very lucky these days. Burglars have targeted the store with the most recent time being thursday. Surveillance video shows 10 people in four different cars trying to break into the Cigarette Store at 4 30 wednesday morning. It is located in oaklands Little Saigon. The burglars attached a chain to the front metal gate and used a jeep to pull open the gate because the store has multiple gates and plywood to reinforce the entrance. The thieves could not get inside. They took off, but the damage was done, causing the owner thousands of dollars to repair the storefront. When i come to look at my store, you know, i saw it and i cried because i hurt. Reporter the owner said this is the 10th time since the pandemic that they have gone inside about six times. She showed photos of a previous burglary where they drove the car into the store. They left with cigarettes and cash. So you thought about closing the store . Yeah, if somebody comes to my store maybe they can. Reporter she has fortified her store using plywood and metal gates, yet they keep coming back. We need to investigate these incidents, collect fingerprints, dna, whatever. Reporter jim nguyen is with the Little Saigon business district. He says that Police Departments dont have the resources they need and that that needs to change. He said burglaries have gone up 42 this year compared with last. Jim also wants the city to reimburse businesses and pay for the damages. She got an estimate of how much this thing will cost her. The city should do something about it. Reporter lynn trump owns a storefront in Little Saigon and shoppers tell her that oakland is too dangerous. I dont know. We are survivors now. Reporter the Cigarette Store owner said 25 years in business was never this bad. The owner says she has lost tens of thousands of dollars and is not aware of any arrests in her cases. Oakland City Council President says the city is trying to support Small Business by spending money on things like safety improvements for Small Business. Now to the latest out of maui, where the death toll has risen now to 93. Crews with cadaver dogs make their way through lahaina. Making this the deadliest u. S. Wildfire in more than a century. Jeff is in maui where officials are bracing for the number to keep rising. Reporter as the death toll keeps rising, authorities in maui say that the process of identifying the data is still in early stages. Cadaver dogs are sifting through the rubble of many homes burned to the ground. We are bringing in more teams and more dogs to speed up the process as much as we can. We have been to a lot of hotels in lahaina but none of them are there, so we have been to police stations. We called the red cross. Nothing. Reporter access to lahaina, the Historic Town in western maui, has suffered the most devastation. While many residents are taking shelter at facilities like this, people all around western maui are telling their stories of survival and loss. I saw one friend dead on the ground like a piece of charcoal. Like pompeii, almost. He is dead. There is nothing you can do. It was that fast. Reporter thoughs wellknown art gallery in lahaina burned to the ground. He said the building was the first Movie Theater in the state of hawaii. He escaped on his motorcycle with only his laptop and passport, leaving his car behind to be consumed by fire. I could feel the flames burning my neck and i could see the embers in front of me. It was insane. Reporter the Investigation Continues into the cause of the fire and questions remain about why hawaiis warning sirens were not activated for locals and tourists. So far authorities have only searched 3 of the total burn area for victims. They say 1000 people are still missing. Fire crews and people in the area are still battling flareups across five square miles in lahaina. There are 60 or 70 that we put out today. I put out another 100 yesterday. At the same time, getting aid to maui has been difficult because everything has to be flown or shipped to the island. Despite the obstacles, supplies keep pouring in any way possible. Everything is needed, from basic necessities, clothes, to places for people to stay. An estimated 86 of all residents in lahaina have been damaged or destroyed. Everybody lost everything. I lost my condo, my jeep, my laptop, my cell phone. Everything i ever owned for 40 years that i lived in lahaina. This weekend, federal and state leaders were on the ground to see the destruction caused by the fire. The president s disaster declaration gives them more federal dollars to help with relief. We have been compiling information on how you can help victims of the wildfires. It is under top stories on kpix. Com. Still ahead this sunday night, even the federal government thinks San Francisco is unsafe and is telling workers to stay home. That story is coming up. Then the Farmers Market at u. N. Plaza is in jeopardy as the city tries to reinvent those Lightning Pictures were incredible from brian today he was in walnut creek when he got them. He was looking out towards the east. If you saw them or if you didnt, it is pretty impressive for a limited part of the bay. But take a look at what he captured that is the view looking off to the east at 9 30. It wasnt just that exact snapshot, at times it went on for an hour and a half or so. As impressive as that is, we leave that behind because i wanted to share the perspective of what it looked like and give the big picture view of what it was. You can see what is going on with all of the light green. The radar is on its most sensitive setting, which means it is picking up everything. Dust, bugs. Very little of that is rain. What you want to see is when we come in for a closeup look and you see that darkened trail right there. That helps us visualize what this was. Really the best part of this in terms of the most impressive timeframe was in the 9 00 hour when that line was working its way across the heart of the bay. That is a 10 00 and you can see the remainder of it. If we clear it out and we look at the top it gives us a better idea of that. We are right across san pablo bay. So futurecast is depicting the possibility that we could see a little bit more of this. Tomorrow morning and again into the afternoon, the caveat on this is that it is incredibly difficult to forecast isolated thunderstorms cells across the bay, because you could have everything come together just right in order for these things to happen. So we dont look at it forecast like this to say exactly where and what time. Rather, we look at that image that takes us into tomorrow, late morning and afternoon, and we come away with the notion that the forecast model is still fairly convinced that the ingredients will be there to develop some of these. Really the timeframe is throughout the first half of the day tomorrow and perhaps into the evening. How did this even happen . If you want to understand the thunderstorms here in the bay, we look at the big picture, you dont see anything on here. It wasnt a big storm that came through. If we look at a different, watch what shows up here. Watch this little counter clockwise spin here off of southern california. That is a steering mechanism in the atmosphere which was in just the right place to take the thunderstorms which developed in the Desert Southwest all summer long and pull them to us. We got thunderstorms tonight from a quirky set up in the atmosphere. This is part of that explanation for why it really is hard to get thunderstorms in the bay. It can happen, and it if is going to happen like this it will happen in august. Here is a different model. It is best to compare and contrast because you want to look at all the different resources in a scenario like this. That one doesnt even really get in but i didnt think we were going to get any earlier this evening and we got some. The other one did that we would get some, so that was the highresolution forecast we will gauge at this point. Small chance tomorrow morning and through the afternoon. The other story is it is going to be hot. Temperatures will be at their warmest tomorrow. We are near 100 for many of the inland valleys tomorrow. Tomorrow is the hottest day. We start cooling down after that. As we look towards San Francisco and oakland, the numbers start to relax a bit. Not so much for San Francisco and oakland. You are still in the low 70s but inland and in the east bay and north valleys, you go from 90s to 80s by the end of this week. San jose, you go from low 90s to mid 80s. This transfer thunderstorms is only here. We have the Energy Around her tomorrow and maybe into tuesday morning. There is just not enough of a widespread chance in the forecast. Anything we do get will be really isolated, but we are always concerned about any lightning strikes, and that would be a concern on any of the dry grassy hills, so we will keep a close eye on that over the next 36 hours all right, guys, back over to you thank you, doerun. Up next, why San Francisco wants to move the popular Farmers Market away from the u. N. Plaza after 40 years. A health and human safety officials cited poor conditions around the building, telling employees to instead maximize the use of telework, or another way of just saying stay home. This comes as the white house calls for more federal workers to return to the office. U. N. Plaza is just around the corner and people have been struggling with conditions in the area, except on sundays. The Farmers Market takes over the space as it has for more than 40 years, but now the city wants to push them aside, Farmers Marketers, to make what they call improvements to the area. The Farmers Market began as a way to get people in the area better access to fresh produce. In fact, the presence of so many people on sundays discouraged so much openair drug use in the area. It worked so well that the city asked the market to stay open all week long, but when they found out that wasnt possible the city instead decided to turn the plaza into a Recreational Area and move the Farmers Market to an adjacent parking lot. My understanding is that it was an experimental pilot project. We have been told that if it doesnt work out you can come right back onto the plaza. We have our doubts about that, but that is what we have been told. Will not allow this to be as it is and help those who need the help, instead of just trying to move them to know where . More customer, maybe. Who knows, you know . So it could be pros and cons. While farmers are asking the public to speak out, they realize it is probably a done deal, as demolition of a fountain in the parking lot has already begun. Coming up next, some of the best dancers in the bay turning the 49ers are 01 so far this preseason. Things did not quite go their way in las vegas. The loss created a mixed mood at watch parties around the bay and in sunnyvale some said the team has work to do to clean up some things, but others say to relax because it is just preseason. I know it is not the real deal yet but we cannot wait until the real season starts. On saturday the 49ers are back at home against the broncos and you can watch that right here on cbs news bay area. The competition is on to build the next warriors dance team. So many talented dancers took part in the final round of auditions today outside of chase center. The dancers performed in groups and also showcased individual solo routines along with other training drills. The Team Director says that this years contestants are quite special.
