Good morning. Im jane pauley and this is sunday morning. He is a worldrenowned artist and activist, a man of mystery whose name says it all. Banksy. His art has appeared sometimes overnight in all kinds of Public Places in any number of cities around the world. Its a skill he honed while evading police a as a graffiti artist back in his early days. Despite the fact a banksy can be worth many millions, his true identity remains a closely guarded secret, known only to a small number of friends and associates. With seth doane we look at the art and artistry of banksy. Reporter he sets his own rules in the art world. You have banksys around you here, but with no offense, isnt this operation exactly what he hates . Oh, i have no doubt. Reporter the secretive british artist is giving us a glimpse into what makes him tick while still keeping most of us guessing. You have, obviously, you know who banksy is . I do know who banksy is, indeed. Reporter banksy coming up this sunday morning. Our david martin will be taking with oscarwinning Actor Morgan Freeman who has gone behind the camera to tell the inspiring story of some long overlooked american heroes. Largest library in the world. Reporter Morgan Freemans film work is already in the library of congress. They fought across france, luxembourg, belgium. Reporter the latest about an allblack armored unit in world war ii. What struck you most about their story . The thing that would strike anybody, i think, is the fact that all of this is true and nobody knows about it. Reporter why dont we know all of American History . The little known history of the 761st tank battalion ahead on sunday morning. Until now. We are going to make them noticed. Luke burbank has a summer song from two of the original members of the group depeche mode. Time was their groundbreaking electronic music made them a cult classic, but these days they are enjoying international acclaim. Reporter for over 40 years, depeche mode just hasnt been able to get enough. Reporter but the sudden death of one of the bands founders has left them in unfamiliar territory. Someone we have been with, worked together for 40 plus years, everything has changed. Reporter later on sunday morning, depeche mode on learning to enjoy the silence. Conor knighton will take us whale watching using a oneofakind program now tracking these magnificent mammals the world over. Kelefa sanneh toasts the rise of the mocktail. Plus, robert costa with a read with tess gunty. Kris van cleave on some decidedly different stars of the red carpet. We will have the latest on those destructive wildfires on the hawaii andr island of maui, story from jim kbaf began and more. Its sunday morning, august 13th, 2023, and well return in a moment. He is the subject of a current art exhibit, popular podcast and many books. His name is banksy, an artist who works in the shadows, but cant seem to avoid the limelight. Seth doane goes in search of an elusive modern master. Reporter most artists have an obsession that defines their work. Monet had light. Hawkny has color. Ive got Police Response time. Thats banksy in his own words, from his First Authorized exhibition in 14 years. One scene is a vandal he has revered for his work, it sells for millions. Street artists most ambitious masterpiece may be keeping his identity hidden. Did you hear directly from banksy . No, this is what, i suppose, one of the great mysteries. I have never met him. I have never spoken to him. Reporter you are hosting the exhibition . Yes. Reporter putting it together required extensive planning and a cover story. Gareth james, who manages the gallery of modern art in glasgow, scotland, told people they would be refurbishing the windows. Had to keep it secret from colleagues, family, friends. Reporter couldnt tell your family . No. We didnt want to risk it getting out. Reporter did you have to sign a nondisclosure agreement . Yes. Reporter the idea was for the show to just appear unannounced, like banksys work, cut and run, 25 years card labor, features the stencils for many of his best known images and work from as far back as the late 90s. Banksy recreates his desk and his child hood bedroom where he explains how this scene from the cult movie jaws inspired him. Vandalism. That is a delib rit mutilation of a Public Service message. Reporter it showed me everything i needed to know about graffiti, he writes, it should be audacious and funny. Seems so much of this exhibition is the captions. Yeah. You really maybe come away with a feeling of having an insight or maybe trying to get to know banksy a bit because that voice is there. Reporter banksys political voice has always been there in his art. In ukraine last year, ruins were the canvas for his commentary on a conflict he paints as david versus goliath. He often champions the underdog, migrants or palestinians in the west bank, where in the shadow of israels separation barrier he created the walledoff hotel. Painted these two angels trying to take the war apart. Reporter this is banksy . Yeah. Reporter his art is coveted but, of course, graffiti is not exactly legal. Videos posted to his instagram reveal his gur errilla style tactics to avoid detection. It was more about avoiding the police . Yes. And nothing to do with it being a promotional tour. Quickly, it became the best promotional tour ever invented. Reporter Steve Lazarides was an early associate of banksys in the working class english town of bristol. What kind of guy is he . Difficult. Reporter in what way . In that way that sometimes people are ingenious at what they are doing. There is no taking away from the fact that the guys like is a legend. He was making images and messages that everyone could understand, and i think thats what was the game changer, like making art, you didnt feel stupid looking at it. Reporter he is sometimes criticized that its too simplistic. Only criticized by the art world. They never liked him. They never liked the movement. Its been almost 30 years, and all of that, without any help from the art world. Reporter whats interesting, there is now this dance between these two worlds. Now the art world wants it. Reporter lazarides says he has thousands of photos of banksy working, some he published, though they parted ways, he has not publicly revealed the artists identity. Listen to this story about banksy searching for inspiration. On my computer. I looked and, robin, youre looking up, like, child sex dolls on my computer. He is like, yeah, yeah, i want to get something to put up in the air. Reporter you know you are saying a name what you say that . Yeah, yeah. That names out there. Who says its true . Reporter you are saying you said robin, robert . Robin, robert, robbie. Reporter people have been speculating about banksys identity for decades. Among the names tossed around are bristol artist Robert Gunning ham and robert de naja. He is a graffiti artist, way better than banksy. Reporte there is talk thats the same person . I heard the stories. Reporter these artworks pop up pretty much along the lines of a massive attack tour in this city, massive attack maybe the artist at the gig and then done a piece of art. Yes, its robert del naja, and me, and a few other people. Reporter you have to dance a very fine line. You know this information, people want to know, and i dont know if youre being serious or not. Maybe im being serious and maybe im not. Thats as much as youre getting from me. Reporter its a tough world to get into, banksys world. Its not tough. Its impossible. I deal in very important artworks by major Museum Artists from picasso to damion hurst, and there is nowhere near this level of secrecy or gamesmanship. Reporter what do you mean by gamesmanship . Its a bit wild west dealing in banksy artworks. Reporter one of the biggest collectors and dealers of banksys work out of his london gallery. Rather exclusively, banksy has managed to create a new set of rules within the art world, which is if it doesnt have a certificate of authenticity, you should not sell it. You should not buy it. And thats astonishing. It was a quagmire of problems. What if the artist doesnt like the early work. Reporter or doesnt like the person seeking the authenticity . Yeah, problem, right. Reporter the art world is interesting. Wild west. Reporter and it seems banksys people can play sheriff. The auction house, kristys, stopped responding to emails regarding our interview request. Sothebys pulled out after telling us they were going to check with banksys team. Its a closed shop. I have been dealing in his work almost 20 years now, and its a closed shop to me. Reporter banksys 2004 work nay pop first piqued his interest. I was taken by it. Frivolity with serious elements, a message. And as you get to know his work more and more, you have a little laugh because its lighthearted. Then you suck your teeth a little. Actually, there is some weight to it. Reporter how much is banksys message, how much is it pure skill as an artist . He is actually quite painterly, but he chose to execute work through stencils, much like andy warhol did through screen prints. Reporter but there is no precedent in the art world for this. Shredding a piece seconds after it was sold at auction for 1. 4 million. And a reverent middle finger to the establishment is a theme of his work, but the stunt actually added value. The shredded painting resold a few years later for 25 million. In the glasgow exhibition, banksy shows how he pulled it off. For all thats on display here, there is one essential implement banksy uses which is not the nondisclosure agreement. I still struggle to say the artists name. I spent years absolutely not saying the artists name for fear i would give something away. Reporter and those who know the artists identity are bound or choose not to expose him. I am not going to reveal it. There are institutions, including uk papers, that would pay a lot of money for him to be unmasked. Not one person has stepped up to take the bounty. Reporter how can that be . At the risk of overly r romanticizing, one has to assume that he is a good person. He knows how to look after the people around him. Reporter would something change if we knew his identity . I am not sure, and i really hope we never find out. Holy cannoli. Look at this. Its like a science project. Its the deadliest wildfire in the United States in years. It happened on the lush Hawaiian Island of maui, and leveled homes and businesses in the town of lahaina, which dates back to the 1700s and has long been a tourist mecca. We get the latest from jonathan vigliotti. Reporter postcard perfect lahaina, mauis historic gem, an once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom now lies in ruin. Homes, businesses, and hotels. 80 of the town smolder for miles on the pacific. A pileup of charred cars frozen in place by racing flames show the panic and desperation that hit these streets after many became trapped. The wildfire that ripped through this american paradise on tuesday caught everyone off guard. I had no idea what was going on because we had no cell service, no tv, no internet. Reporter residents say evacuation orders were never issued, neither were text alerts. Some people so desperate, ran into the ocean to escape the flames, but dozens didnt make it out alive. Carbon dioxide. We held on as best as we could. Reporter by the time help arrived in town, the firestorm had taken a terrible toll. The Hawaii Attorney general has launched a comprehensive review into the Emergency Response as officials warn the number of dead could rise significantly in the weeks to come. Teams with the National Guard are sifting through the ashes. X marking the spots that have already been checked. Officials say canine crews have searched only 3 of the wreckage so far. We have an area we have to contain, and it is full of our loved ones. Weve got 89 so far. Today, we identified two. Reporter its all eerily reminiscent of another paradise in california where 85 people died in 2018. Both communities may be separated by an ocean, but they are connected, according to scientists, by the very same warming atmosphere thats brought more drought, less rain, and the higher fire risk. This weekend, in lahaina, thousands remain displaced, living in shelters, unsure of what comes next. We are the only things we have now, because everything that we had in the past is gone. Reporter federal aid already approved by President Biden will help the city rebuild, but it will take years. Among the few survivors that will link old to new is the towns sprawling 150yearold banyan tree, badly burned, but unbowed. Conor knighton this morning has a whale oftale about the ta of a whale. Reporter located on mexicos southwest coast in the state of guerrero, the village of Barra De Potosi is a bit off the beaten path. You wont find mega resorts full of tourists here, but its a popular vacation destitination r humpbaback whaleses, which t tr ththousands o of m miles j justd inin this patctch of the p paci. They are coming down for this warm tropical salty water where they can really relax and reporter Katherina Audley is the founder of the nonprofit whales of guerrero. A decade ago she began working with local fishermen to develop a conservation focused ecotourism program. When the whales win, everyone wins. People here really understand. Reporter former fishing boats have now been repurposed that whalewatching vessels. A whale just jumped reporter which are really tail watching vessels. When whales dive they flash their tails, known as flukes. When the hump backs are in residence here, they put on quite a show. This is just amazing i have never seen this before. Reporter audley took these photos on the boat. On land, we got online and thats where this tale gets a little deeper. Seven times, wow. Wow. So we have seen this before. It has an i. D. Reporter this whale is crc 18946. This one crc 18241. Turns out, we werent the first to watch these bhaels. These are all the pictures that different people have taken of this whale. Reporter every whales tail is unique. The ridges of the top, the colors and patterns of the fluke, its like a fingerprint. A clue. This whale algorithm has allowed us to instantly put together six sightings for this whale. Reporter its possible thanks to the website happywhale. Com. Anyone in the world can upload a fluke photo and happy whale matches it up to all other known sightings. Both bhaels we photographed in mexico had been seen the year before near monterey, california. Which is also where youre likely to spot the human behind happy whale. We have a whale up again at about 8 00. Reporter Ted Cheeseman grew up whale watching in monterey bay, which is full of whales in the summer months. They come to feed here. Oh, nice big old tail breach there. That was awesome. Reporter he went on to work as a nationalist, guidek expeditions all over the world. While scientist use flukes to identify whales for decades, he couldnt understand why the process had remained cumbersome. The catalogs were so big, it would take an hour to figure out. Reporter you are flipping through a physical book . And then more recently flipping through photos on a computer. Reporter cheeseman figured there had to be a better way. He and his c cofounder r ken sutherlaland approacached silic vavalley compapanies for help i deveveloping an n algorithm. M. If f facial r recognition w was possible, couldnt the same principles be applied to fluke recocognition. Tracking individuals is very, very powerful. We have our privacy concerns, are we being tracked individually . Thankfully, the whales dont really care. Reporter they are like, listen, i didnt tell my wife i was going to monterey. Rit right. This aquatic invasion of privacy has been hugely helpfu for researchers. Since launching in 2015, happy whale has received 100,000 submissions. Looking at the map on the site, its clear to see the links between the whale population in california and mexico and the links between other whales that travel from lazaalaska to hawai. How often does a whale surprise you, you assume its dead and all of a sudden it pops up on the grid . A lot. Yeah. Repororter whaleles are ful surprises. S. They donont alwayss m migrate e same spots and we still dont know exactly how they find their way. We know humpback whales sing. Their songs are incredibly complex, but we still dont know why. Reporter happy whale just helps us understand the who. It makes the whales fun to learn about. If you know that whale by name, you are going to care more about that whale. And if you care more about that whale, you care more about the oceans. Reporter on my monterey whale watch trip in may, we saw a whale that had never been uploaded before. I added my photo to the site, and now i get updates every time that whale is spotted. Would knows . Maybe it will pop up in mexico next winter. Those of us who have whales that we care about, thats really the first thing we look at in the morning. The happy whale updates. Reporter is that regular . Every day. Yes. Its so exciting when you are on a boat with people and they are seeing whales, maybe for the first time, and then for it to go from a big gray mass to an individual whale that has a whole history, its very powerful for people to get connected to them that way. rsv can be a dadangerous vivirus. Words are very unnecesessary they cacan only do haharm they are a pioneering new wave band still turning out music 40 years after we first got to know them, in part because, as luke burbank explains, when tragedy struck, members of depeche mode found a way to carry on. Reporter for a band who put out their first big hit over 40 years ago reporter depeche mode is surprisingly relevant here in 2023. Reporter from latenight tv appearances to selling out stadiums across the u. S. And in europe all i ever wanted all i ever needed is near in my heart reporter and it isnt just some nostalgia tour where a band plays their greatest hits at a casino near you. Depeche modes latest album. Memento mori, is getting serious air play. Our music, if you allow it, will take you somewhere. Reporter and yet, as dave gahan and martin gore began their tour schedule, they found themselves somewhere where theyd never been. Mourning the loss of their bandmate, Andy Fletcher. I didnt realize maybe before we went into this promo trip how heavy that would be, to be asked about that over and over and over again. Reporter fletch, as they called him, was a Founding Member of the band and died suddenly last year, just as the albu album was finished, giving the title, which means remember ones mortality, an eerie new meaning. Some might say that a lot of these songs were sort of foreboding or something. You know, you i dont think mar was aware of that heavens, dreaming we know well be again when i first started writing songs for album, i wouldnt have had the idea of call the album memento mori and maybe have some of the songs dealing with death. It just kind of happened like that. Sometimes you do wonder if you tap into something people are people so why should it be you and i should get along reporter growing up in a small town in essex, england, martin gore was one of the first kids around to get a synthesizer, which is why vince clarke and Andy Fletcher wanted to start a band with him. And they immediately saw the potential of the synthesizer that i was using, so they quickly ditched their guitars and their guitar and bass and then we became an allelectronic band. Reporter dave gahan joined as singer and they started making waves in londons underground club scene. It was easy to go to gigs on the train. We put them in little suitcases and we would take, you know, travel on the train to the gig. Reporter this english band with a french name and their synthesizers were becoming a hit in europe. But success in the u. S. Would take a bit longer due to lack of radio play and some suspicious music critics. Every interview would be a battle. Why dont you use traditional instruments . Of course, thats not a great way to start an interview. Reporter the band finally broke through with u. S. Audiences in 1988, playing to a capacity crowd at the rose bowl in pasadena, memorably documented by da penny baker. Their subject album, violator, went triple platinum. As for guitars, they began appearing in the sound of depeche mode as well. If its not one of those two, i could tell which song it is. Someone who not a rock star, why do you need so many different guitars . Different tuning . At some point it becomes an addiction. We built this cult following. We still feel to this day that were kind of like a cult band even though we sell a lot of records everywhere. Martins right. Its like a, i think we probably are and have been for many years, we are kind of the biggest alternative band in the world. Put it that way. Reporter but success for depeche mode was a doubleedged sword. Gahan developed a heroin addiction so severe, it said los angeles paramedics nicknamed him the cat because he overdosed so many times. It was the time when i wasnt working that got really dark because there is no one there to balance it out. There is no band. There is no music. There is no, you know, it was just the addiction. And thats what it is. You can call it whatever you like, but once you go down that road, the hardest thing is to drag yourself back out of it. It was for me, anyway. I didnt think it would be as hard as what it was. Reporter was it hard for you to kind of watch what dave was going through, as his friends . It was difficult at the time. But then, you know, after that, after dave got clean, for years i went on drinking. And i think that must have been hard for dave because i wasnt an occasional drinker, you know . And that was in daves face all the time. Thats kind of reporter today gore and gahan are sober and credit music with saving their lives. Martin, i know he feels the same, it was the one thing that always sort of could lift me, change my spirit, change the way i felt, lead me to a different direction. Also, into fantasy. Into another world. It saved me many, many times. I am sitting here in one of the biggest breweries on the east coast. Top 20 Craft Brewery in the country out of 9,000 craft breweries. Reporter there is one thing you wont find in these cases of craft beer. Alcohol. Its one the biggest out there. Great tastes nonalcoholic beer. Reporter bill shufelt founded athletic brewing in connecticut in 2017. Sales hit 37 million in 2021, and topped 60 million last year. John said, we are not launching commercially. If this is an indistinguishing awardwinning craft beer. Reporter since 2016 nonalcoholic beer sales increased 70 . 80 of customers drink alcohol other times in the week. Reporter is this similar to what a full alcohol brewery would be doing . 100 , all the same. What we do is traditional brewing. We tweak a degree here, a degree there, wind up at a fully fermented product under 5 . Reporter eric asimov is the chief wine drit i can at the new york times. We asked him to taste some of the latest nonalcoholic beverages, including an athletic beer. Its super hop by. There is a lot of flavor in there. I thought you might hate this. I like it. Reporter have you noticed in the last five or ten years there are more a and better nonalcoholic drinks on the menu . Absolutely. No good cocktail list nowadays is complete without at least a few selections. Reporter do you think there is more room to grow . Its going to increase. Dry januarys are a big thing. That has been extended to october. Reporter i am worried its going to take over the whole calendar. With some people, it is. You have people thinking intently about their health. In deciding maybe that Alcohol Consumption is not a great thing. We are going to do day drinking without the booze. Reporter Cameron Winkleman is head bartender at metro area in new york city. Are you feeling skeptical . Yes. This is pinot noir dealcoholized and carbonated. If you were to drink a good sparkling wine made naturally, the bubbles would be cascading all over the mouth. This feels like a soft drink. Reporter if you compare it to wine. Other nonalcoholic wines, i think this is a really good effort. Its not overwhelmingly sweet. Alcohol is part of the natural process of making wine. Yeast transforms the sugar in the grape juice into alcohol and carbon dioxide. If you dont have alcohol, you are putting together parts that dont really have a unifying element. Reporter as move says some of his favorite nonalcoholic drinks be the ones that dont try to imitate wine. This a gooseberry ferment. Its floral. I really like that. Reporter he also liked some of the alcoholfree cocktails. A ron rivera infused with mango, grape fight, yuzu and Coconut Water and topped with a mangomatcha meringue. That is delicious. So concentrated and yet light and refreshing. The growth in this market seems to be as an addon, right . Not i am going to give up cocktails and only drink mocktails. Its like i dont want to have four cocktails, but maybe i could do two and two . Thats as i understand it. Its not my personal experience, i confess. Reporter whats your personal experience . I just drink less. Reporter thats not the american way. Its to consume even more . If i dont want an catholic beverage, my tendency, except for a cocktail, is to drink water. Reporter water . Yeah. Reporter now i have heard everything. I love water. Jim gaffigan this morning is running on empty. There are simple annoyances in modern life. We have woken you up to discover our cellphone, charging overnight, was, well, not charging overnight. And is dead, or almost dead. Either way, an existential panic sets in. Oh, no how will your day go on without your phone . Is it possible to go about your day without a charged phone . For most of us, the memory of discovering an uncharged phone is seared into our consciousness. Most of us, just not my children. Yes, my beautiful, intelligent children, struggle with keeping a phone charged. Well, i shouldnt say struggle. They make no effort. To clarify, when i say children, they are not dodd toddlers or newborns. Teenage humanlike creatures to who possess the ability to make nintendo purchases with my credit card somehow cant figure out how to insert a lightning cord connected to an outlet into a phone. After repeatedly explaining the complex process of charging a cellphone to my brilliant children, my wife and i caved and bought portable chargers. They are external batteries one can grab and use when someone forgets to charge their phone overnight. These external batteries were charged the night before. You know how a logical person might charge their phone. Anyway, my kids then take these external batteries, charge their phones, and lose them throughout new york city. If im not painting enough of a maddening scenario, you should know this. On numerous occasions i discovered my brilliant children sitting in their room near an outlet using a portable external charger to charge their phone. The outlet is right there. The allblack unit that fought with distinction during the second world war. Hopefully, thats about to change. David martin catches up with Academy Award winner morgan freeman, who is shining a light on an almost forgotten chapter of American History. Reporter good morning, sir. Morgan freemans work is already in the National Film registry of movie classics at the library of congress. And now he is here in person. Have you ever been here before . I dont think so. Reporter youre in for a treat. Here to visit one the great public spaces in america. The main reading room of the library of congress. Oh, my lord. Reporter nothing says history like this. Were here because it was the only place we could find a copy of this book. Come out fighting, the epic tale of the 761st tank battalion. 1942 to 1945. The first black tank battalion to fight in world war ii. A time when the armed forces were still segregated and blacks were limited almost entirely to support duties behind the front lines. And this is the history of the 761st. A young black reporter, treasu trezzvant accompanied the 761st across europe. Did you ever hear of him before you started working on this . No. Reporter he deserves to be better known. All of this deserves to be better known. All of this. Landing in normandy, they fought t their way a across fra luxembmbourg, belglgium, in ge. Reporter freeman set out to make that happen with a documentary about the 761st. Also known as the black panthers. You see that spot . Yeah, i see it, right there. More of that steel. Reporter which will air on the history channel, complete with a cameo appearance by lloyd austin, the nations first black secretary of defense. Morgan, great to have you here. Although around here, to be honest with you, you know, the whole deep, smooth voice thing, thats really my thing. Reporter what struck you most about their story . Well, the thing that would strike anybody, i think, is the fact that all of this is true and nobody knows about it. Reporter why dont we know all of American History . The story of the 761st has been told before. They were African American soldiers. Reporter in a documentary narrated by Denzel Washington and in a book written by kareem abduljabbar. But it has never registered in American Culture like the band of brothers. The hbo series about a company of white soldiers fighting their way across europe. What do you hope to add to it . I want to do a band of brothers. I want to be able to tell the public this depth and wonder, bravery, blood and guts. Reporter very few people will ever tread Trezzvant Andersons account. Copy two. Reporter the librarian tells us thats two of only two. And the other one is in storage because its in such bad condition. But you dont have to read it. Morgan freeman will read it to you. The story belongs to the 14 million negros of america as a tribute to the military prowess, courage, and bravery of their brothers and fathers against great odds on the field of battle. Reporter so the numbers have changed. They are now, i think, 47. 2 million black americans. Are those words, they still ring true . Oh, yeah, they do what the 761st tank battalion did and how it did it are the utmost importance to all of the people of america. Reporter in the fall of 1944, general George Patton was leading the american charge towards germany. But he was running short of tanks, so patton, who never hid his racist views, sent for the 761st. Everyone has their eyes on you, and expecting great things from you. Most of them, your race is looking forward to you. Dont let them down. And, damn you, dont let me down. Reporter they saw their first combat november 7, 1944, in a small French Village held bit the germans. Everybody was scared. O only a liar would deny it. But then the job had to be done. Reporter the germans kicked tail out of company c. Its not like the 761st is going from glorious victory to glorious victory . No. Reporter they are taking some serious losses . They didnt back down. They dididnt turn a and run. Reporter they were thrown into the epic battle the bulge, hitlers last desperate attempt to turn the tide of war, rolled into the third reich. 183 Straight Days on the front lines. The ultimate compliment, because it comes from an enemy soldier. Said bravery i have never before seen. Thats the way the german officer put it. More qualified to do this, and we set out to prove different. And we did. We proved it. Reporter Johnny Stevens was one of the six members of the 761st whose oral histories were recorded by the library of Congress Veterans history project. We didnt get any recognition for it. Reporter they came them a country as deeply segregated as the one they left. How were they treated . How were they treated . By the government . By the country . To the back of the bus where you belong. Reporter the 761st was nominated for a president ial Unit Citation in 1945, but did not receive it until jimmy carter was president. After a pentagon investigation that oversight has been corrected. 33 years after the war, president carter awarded the 761st a president ial citation for extraordinary heroism in action. Reporter rubin rivers did not receive the posthumous medal of honor he earned in battle until bill clinton was president. The president of the United States of america authorized by act of congress awarded in the name of the congress the medal of honor to Staff Sergeant rubin rivers, United States army. Your nation thanks you and god bless you. Thank you. [ applause ] reporter Trezzvant Anderson says it better than either you or i ask could. By the sweat of the brows the negro soldiers who fought for their country and gave their blood and their lives on the field of battle, asking nothing but hoping that their sacrifices would not go unheeded and unnoticed by history. Reporter have they gone unheeded and unnoticed . Until now. Were going to make them noticed. Times come. Simple as that. Times come. With kris van cleave, were off to the opal awards, the oscars of engineering. Reporter just after 6 30 this morning, the bridge collapsed. Infrastructure is almost by design. A blackout. Reporter something we only seem to notice when something goes wrong. Tlost the water supply severl days ago when heavy rain altered the quality of the drinking water. A lot of what we do is out of sight and mind. Reporter tom smith, the executive director of the American Society of civil engineers, says the public rarely thinks about the untold number of engineering successes that make everyday life possible. What happens when they flush their toilets . How does that clean water get to them in the morning to brush their teeth . People take it for granted when the lights come on. All the engineering that goes into that. We want to make sure it is recognized and celebrated. And we think it deserves a red carpet. Reporter you heard that right. A red carpet. Since 1960, asce hosted the opal awards, an opulent gala where members trade in slide rules for black tie and glitzy gowns. Who are you wearing . No idea. Dont get many opportunities to wear this. Its nice to get it out of clo closet. Reporter to celebrate what might be infrastructures biggest night. Supporting those who make big things, big bridges, yes. Big roads, yes. Big water supply and treatment facilities, yes. Reporter past winners include a lot of big things, like the st. Louis arch, bostons big dig, and new york citys Second Avenue subway. The nominees this time included transportation projects, power and water plants, even the demolition of an Oceanfront Hotel in an environmentally sensitive part of hawaii. But the top prize the winner is the Rainier Square redevelopment project. Reporter essentially, infrastructures best picture went to Rainier Square. A blockbuster in the form of a seattle skyscraer built using an Innovative New construction technique called speedcore. It cut the construction time nearly in half, saving millions. Outstanding. Reporter were you surprised when you heard your name . Stunned is probably the right word. Reporter Ron Klemencic was the lead engineer. He is also speedcores biggest cheerleader. In terms my grandmother would understand, what is speedcore . Speedcore is a prefabricated, modular wall system. Think of lego Building Blocks and then we stack them up on top of another and ultimately fill them with concrete to make them strong and stiff enough. Reporter someone compared it to an Ice Cream Sandwich. Yeah. Reporter this would be the cookie part of the Ice Cream Sandwich . Correct. Reporter 17 careers in the making, speedcore developed as an open Source Technology that is free to utilize by a group of nonprofits and colleges, including purdue university, where amit varma teaches engineering. With money from the bipartisan infrastructure bill starting to flow, there is a hope among the engineers in this room tonights totally inspirational. Reporter we are entering a golden age of infrastructure. I love civil engineering, truly. You guys rck. Reporter and they seem honored to help build it. Its not often a young novelist debut offering enjoys rave reviews and earns a National Book award besides. Robert costa is in conversation with author and indiana native tess gunty. For most studebaker workers, these are the last days and these are the last cars they will build. Reporter 60 years ago, south bend, indiana, offered america a preview of what was to come in the industrial heartland. For most of these men, there are only questions. Questions of mortgages, credit, clothing, food, insurance. The christmas 1963 shuddering of the studebaker automobile plant foreshadowed the decline of American Manufacturing and the decimation of midwestern cities. That decision put about 7,000 people out of work in this town of 130,000, and now hundreds of those unemployed are drawing surplus government food instead of paychecks. Whats your reaction to this comment that some people made that receiving surplus food kills a mans initiative to get a job. You get the job and ill give you back the food. Reporter while south bend has recovered in the years since, the six decade legacy of abandonment is never far from sight. I was born 30 years after studebaker closed. I think that the kinds of consequences of economic decline become extremely personal. They are anchored in the beating hearts of those that you know and love. Reporter south bends legacy of decline has become the unlikely inspiration for an awardwinning debut novel by 30yearold author tess gunty. This is your childhood neighborhood . I spent my first five years of my life here. Apparently the most formative years, according to psychologists. Reporter gunty, a south bend native, crafted characters on the fringes of a fictional city based on her hometown. The book is called the rabbit hutch, named after the shabby Apartment Building that houses the storys protagonist blandine watkins. Are you blandine . No. And yes. Im blandine in so far as im every single character in the book. I dont think you can write without putting much of your Emotional Experience into every single character. I may not know what its like to have a baby, but i know what its like to feel fear and i know what its like to feel out of control. Reporter the book follows blandine and her roommate, young adults who aged out of the foster care system without having found a forever family. You write a lot about orphans, but your experience seems to be a bit different. Its true. I have been very lucky. I have had love from my family unconditionally all my life. When im speaking about this town as an orphaned place, it was important to get into the psychologies of characters who had been abandoned. Reporter the child of academics whose creativity outstripped their income, she developed an eye for details that speak to class and status. Downtown she nears the entrance, blandine pas alanly of garbage can. Welcome to vacaville, indiana, the crossroads of america. The city speaks to her. Wont stop speaking to her. Reporter you write in a funny and scathing way about the new aristocracy in suburban america where everyone smells like driyer sheets. They are wearing outdoor gear m meant for climbing mountains in the indiana suburbs. I experienced this in high school. We received free tuition at catholic high school. So my family was able to attend a school that we probably couldnt have afforded otherwise. This was the first time that i really understood the relativity of my own economic position. You know, we might have had difficult times financially, but we always had what we needed and that was not true for my friends in my neighborhood. They were suffering from so many more extreme forms of neglect and poverty. This years National Book award for fiction goes to tess gunty for rabbit hutch won the National Book award for fiction, making tess gunty the youngest recipient since legendary novelist philip roth back in 1960. I truly believe that attention is the most sacred resource that we have to spend on this planet, and books are perhaps one of the last places where we spend this resource freely and where it means the most. Reporter the award put gunty on the map at a time when literary fiction sales are in steep decline. Book banning is rampant, and some delayer the College English major obsolete. But gunty is a passionate advocate for her craft. The book is a collaboration between the reader and the writer. Its an imaginative collaboration. Its not a relationship between a consumer and a product. It is something more freely entered and sort of, to me, sacred than that. Reporter do some of your friends say being a novelist is oldfashioned . Yeah. Sometimes its treated like you are a blacksmith or something. Wow, i didnt know you could do that anymore. Reporter while tess gunty knows a literary novel may be an unlikely place to tackle the economic and political issues of our times, her writing vibrates with a certain kind of ambition, both as a breakout talent and as a voice for the people of indiana. The slogan for the state is its the crossroads of america. And for a long time i didnt understand what that meant. I think of it as a place where all of the contradictions are america are very alive, and they are actively fighting each other. I think its a mistake to assume that indiana is a monolithic place with one set of ideals and one demographic. It is a place that is vast and various and mysterious. phone t typing message sound mesessage soundnd shut t it down blackckpink in yoyour a shut t it down whatwhwhatwhatwhwhat .
