It happens every year at this time when earths orbit intersects debris in the tail of a comet. To view the shower, be away from city lights. And do you need a telescope . No. Do you need binoculars . Nope. All you have to do is lie down and face the sky. The other sky. No particular place to look, just look up. You might favor the northeast. The best time to look, brace yourself. From midnight to around 4 00 a. M. , early sunday morning. So, keep yourself warm. Make yourself comfortable. Hows that . This is much better. Much better. Now at 6 30, maui residents walking into a grim scene tonight in the wake of the deadly wild fires. The death poll at least 80. Officials fear that number will rise as emergency workers sift through what is left of the Historic Town of lahaina. Jeff is live as people head back to their homes after the devastating wild fires. Right now, Police Officers are telling folks they need to turn around on highway 30. For most of the morning, residents were allowed in. But this afternoon, that all stopped. As Army Soldiers walked through the rubble of charred buildings searching for any signs of life. Residents say they are still in shock following the wild fires that destroyed their town. I dont know how to explain it. Its like a war zone. Reporter tuesdays fire in lahaina wiped out 80 of the town. 2200 buildings incinerated leaving thousands homeless. We lost everything. Thank god that we still have each other. Its like we are the only things we have now. Reporter people are trying to make their way back to their homes to see the anything is left. Officials worry the death toll will soar as searchers pour through the scorched wreckage. For survivors an army of volunteers is delivering food, water, and clothing to shelters to help people like Joanne Hayashi who had to jump into the ocean to escape the flames. You see people you didnt know made it. You would just be there crying. The cause of the fire is still undetermined but residents are demanding answers as to why hawaiis extensive system of warning sirens never sounded. No sirens went off. Nothing. It was fight or flight. The attorney general plans to lead a review surrounding the disaster. But for these residents, thats too little too late. At this point, the officers here tell us that only emergency vehicles and utility trucks are allowed into lahaina. Anyone else is going to need special access. Back to you. Jeff, we heard so many stories of survival. And you heard a few since you have been out there. Reporter one of the women we met is from southern california. She lives and works here and she was escaping when the flames were rushing through to the business where she was working and she noticed as she was driving out, there were a number of people walking to try to get out. You see, lahaina is basically a coastal port. So some people dont even have cars. They ride around in bikes. So she saw a man walking out, carrying a tortoise trying to escape the flames. She stopped, asked him to get into her car so she could drive him to safety. Turns out that tortoise belonged to another neighbor. Soothe drove around looking for the owner of the tortoise. That woman was hiding in a parking structure and so she had with her, her two birds, as she was trying to escape. So ultimately, she was able to get into the car. That second woman told us. Had it not been for the Good Samaritan she did not know, her two birds, her tortoise and herself would probably not have made it out alive. Does anybody know how the fire started . So, at this point, that is undetermined. There is huge system of sirens. There are no government reports that those sirens went off. The government did say they sent out broadcast messages and phone messages but when the power goes out, when you have huge infrastructure, you will not get that text message or alert on your radio or your tv because you dont have access to that. On top of that, you dont have power. One of the things about maui, i cant really ask my photographer to pan around, but a lot of those power poles are the old wooden power poles. So when the wind came through, some of them snapped and just like the fires we had, the campfire in california or the thomas fire, you know, youll have, they have not pinpointed that. But that is something they are looking into. The Attorney Generals Office says they are going to look into all of that. All right jeff. Well thank you so much for your reporting. The infrastructure is tough there. That with the power and the internet. And even the access roads, there are very few in maui. It was a difficult task for everyone there. A denver family is speaking out after being forced to jump in the water to escape the flames. Two brothers and their mom had to wait in shoulder deep water until it got dark for hours. This is like last resort time. The fire was across the street. It was that close, we are like yeah, we have to jump in the ocean. I felt like it was my job to keep everyone else calm. Because my mom at that point was not doing well. I was super worried about her eyes. When they got out, there was still fire all around them. A fireman helped them to safety.
