Shawn . Amanda a large fire in oakland started last night. Continues this morning. And now there are concerns about the air quality. Well have a live report coming up. And here in the Weather Center continue to track that air quality all morning long. Throughout areas like benicia and vallejo and even down into west oakland where theyre all being impacted with poor air quality this morning. More on that coming up. And as you hit the roadways we have a Traffic Alert along 101. Plus brake lights already building at the bay bridge. And a little misty out there on the freeways, more on that coming right up. But first, right now firefighters in hawaii are battling wildfires on the island of maui. The confirmed number of People Killed jumped over night. That figure now stands at 36. The worst damage is in the Historic Town of lahaina. Entire neighborhoods are just completely destroyed. Oh my gosh. Look at the harbor. Well, look at this view from a private helicopter provides a smoky view of the scope of the destruction. The flames were fueled by strong winds from a hurricane that passed well south of the Hawaiian Islands. Thousands of people ran for shelter and some even jumped into the ocean in a desperate attempt to escape that fire. Shes not even the worst of it. Still get dead bodies in the water. Floating. And on the seawall. Weve been pulling people out since last night, trying to save peoples lives. Were still trying to assess the amount of damage, but the road to recovery will be long. Just absolutely horrific what were seeing from there. Shelters packed with residents who have nowhere else to go and were learning this morning that San Francisco mayor london breed is among the tourists who had to evacuate that island. Thats according to the chronicle. Coming up in just a few minutes, we hear from a bay area family still stranded on maui. A live look at oakland now. That fire still burning near the citys port just look at that right there. And from what we know, people even in neighboring cant escape the smell from this one. The flamat 6 00 p. M. On schnitzer steel. They added that it was under control just before 10 00 p. M. But cheerily smoke still affecting many people. Shawn chitnis live at the alameda ferry where many commuters are waking up to the plumes and also the smell, shawn. What do you see . Reporter well, as commuters coming by to catch one of the first ferries here, they are certainly taken aback by what they see over my shoulder. Some of them did smell it and others have not but as we continue to monitor the conditions here, i will say that it seems as if the flames have gotten smaller. Harder to tell though because the smoke is still so thick. And driving through oakland to get to this location, i could certainly smell the smoke inside my car. And that is really the key indication that Agency Officials want people to think about as they go about their day today. If you can smell the smoke, they say that is enough reason for to you stay indoors and close your doors and windows while we are trying to get through this. We also want to show you a little bit of the scene last night. Thats when people were first noticing this in oakland and again, people smelling it right away. Even indoors and part of the response that continues today is the heavy equipment that is helping firefighters to try to get ahold of the fire. Its coming from ha mountain of scrap metal at schnitzer steel. This is near the oakland port and again starting around wednesday afternoon, people who were out in the evening last night at Jack London Square, they said they also noticed the smell of smoke inside a restaurant. When we came in, they didnt tell us that it was smoke or anything. And they didnt mention it. And the only time we noticed it is when we saw it. And smelled it. And the people in back of us told us that it had been going on all afternoon. Reporter so we know that a hazmat team was called by the Oakland Fire Department. Part of their response still waiting to get the update on how thats going. But of course that air quality advisory remains and part of the challenge that we know firefighters are facing and have been facing since last night is moving around the debris that is at the source of this fire. So they can get to where that fire started. That is likely why it is taking them so long to put this fire out. Amanda, back to you. Obviously very complicated one here. All right, shawn. Thank you so much for that live report. Well stay on this throughout this morning. And lets take a look at what people are saying on social media here. Con fire pio saying smoke from the fire at schnitzer steel at oakland port has drifted into contra costa county. Please do not call 911 due to the smoke. Checout another tweet that we are seeing. This is from tiskawho else in the bay area smells smoke from oakland . We have folks in Castro Valley and pleasanton reporting that they do. Definitely let us know if you are smelling it where you live. And howie, smells like burned rubber and niles, is that a result from the fire in oakland . Thats a question for our meteorologist because you are checking out the air quality in what people are experiencing here in the bay area. I mean whats interesting too is the winds are light this morning. As are most mornings here in the bay. But its still whipping that smoke and that pm 2. 5 up into the atmosphere and over into areas like benicia and even vallejo. Actually take the air quality map and zoom into local areas just off into the east bay. Oakland, west oakland, even up into berkeley thats where were seeing the worst air walt this morning. Its kind of ranging jump up into the east inland hills too. This is going to continue to sweep up into the Carquinez Strait area, also seeing a little bit of a pocket closer to areas like vallejo and benicia. Dealing with not the best air quality this morning. Think of the local areas. This is what werement anding just around 1 00. That onshore flow getting up to around 20mileperhour wind gusts. Lets take it back to the temperatures though. Daytime highs today are going to stay rightaround average for most of us. A cool and cloudy start and San Francisco not reporting right now out of sfo but were in the upper 50s in San Francisco and a very similar trend near san jose and oakland already at 61. Notice those clouds sitting over San Francisco right. That marine layer is really dense for us this morning along our coast even stretching its way out into the east bay this morning too. Were going to see just a little bit of coastal drizzle not a lot. Less than 0. 01 jazzbo the evening hours tonight. Along areas like halfmoon bay and San Francisco and even up into the north bay too. Mostly streamlined just along our coast. But we are going to continue to see these cloudy skies into the evening hours tonight with low 60s in the bay. And 80s off in the east inland hills and more on that coming up in a bit. Gianna . All right, thank you. Taking a look at the roadways right now. Planning on making the ride through Mountain View. A Traffic Alert still in effect this morning. This is south 101 connecting on to 85. The hov lane is shut down and its been closed for several hours now. This is due to a deadly crash and it happened overnight and still a lot going on in and around the area. Were starting to see a few brake lights on the connector road. Taking 101 past that point, traffic is moving along pretty well. The rest of the way through the peninsula. Bay bridge, metering lights are on and its starting to back up just a little bit at least tot caltrans parking lot. Mid lot right there. Not quite to that overpass yet. Well keep you updated on that. And looks like that fog and the mist is settling in at the Golden Gate Bridge. So visibility certainly an issue now. As you come out of marin county. Through the waldo grade. Heading into the city. So plan for that this morning. Other than that, your ride across say 92 and 84, the dunbarton and san mateo bridge are looking okay this morning. Amanda . Now in our other top stories. The two robo taxi kanes that keep taking heat for blocking traffic could bypass the safety concerns for good today. State regulators are set to decide whether to give cruise and waymo free reign to operate around the clock in San Francisco. Theyve already driven millions of test miles without any major accidents. But weve also seen plenty of video of confused cars coming to stops blocking regular and emergency traffic. Because of that, experts say safety of these driverless cars, not totally clear. The key issue with safety right now is getting more data. And more publicly available data. At this point, the companies that are working on this have a lot of data that they retain in private. That they dont share publicly. And i think in order to gain the confidence of our government officials and of the general public, its doing to be necessary to share more data about whats really happening. Well, in total San Francisco city officials said they have documented about 600 incidents involving selfdriving cars. All right, back to the devastating wildfires on the island of maui and hawaii. Visitors being urged to leave as soon as possible. But just looking at the scene, thats so much easier shadchan done. Sara donchey has details on a stranded bay area family whose relaxing Beach Vacation turned into the camping trip from hell. Reporter the stewart familys dream hawaiian vacation took quite a turn, leaving them to improvise in a way none of them expected. Out camping, but we have plenty of food and we have made a trip to costco as we came into maui and were set with water and food and, you know, had stuff to barbecue with. Even had our own utensils, we were ready. Reporter thats because daniel along with his wife sandra and three daughters followed the Evacuation Order issued by the hotel. Theyre among 4,000 tourists who were forced to evacuate due to the intense fires. Unfortunately, not everybody was. Some folks were stranded and some folks didnt have supplies, you know. As usual, stores ran out of water. Ran out of supplies. Et cetera. And then early this morning, at about 4 00, the hotel staff issued a recommend to evacuate for a mandatory evac came. The fires were getting closer. And so then we evacuated around the north end of maui back to the vicinity of the airport where we are now. Reporter they plan to fly back home to the bay area thursday and for sandra, the destruction on maui feels particularly personal. My grandfather was 100 native hawaiian. And so its very personal for me especially. Because i feel like the island is really taking a hit. I mean, to lose so much that was burned in lahaina, lahaina village, and the village and we heard that the boats that we were just on two days ago are now completely burned, all of them. They were all docked there in the lahaina village area there. Off the pier. And yeah, i mean, its really sad, theres a lot of history. We would really ask for prayer for the residents and the people traveling and we ran into people from all over the world. Reporter and it isnt just people returning to the bay area who are stranded. Some folks from hawaii are stuck here too. Flying in from denver from our annual road trip, and upon landing here in San Francisco, find out all the flights to maui are canceled. Now, we live on maui. We just want to get home. But theres no flights going into maui. Reporter allen and his friend bob say theyre anxious to get home, and like many others who braved cancellations and delays, theyre hoping to try again thursday. We on a ten day road trip, you know, longing to get home. I mean, you live in hawaii. You want to get home. For recall the latest developments from hawaii and more of the dramatic aimages coming out of maui, you can head to kpix. Com. I have never heard of that before, but it doesnt surprise me, yeah, some smart thieves out there. The warning from Law Enforcement you need to know this morning. And later on, cal and stanford still in limbo. The wa welcome back. Bonn the bay area beat, car breakins across the bay area have become an epidemic and now theres a hightech twist to how thieves may be picking their targets. John ramos shows us the sneaky way burglars are finding Electronics Even if theyre completely hidden out of sight. Reporter okay, you leave your car in a parking lot to run an errand, knowing it will just take a minute. Most people know better than to leave Electronic Devices in plain sight so we stick them in the glove box or in the seat, and when you come back, the phone or laptop is gone. Was it really just bad luck . Well, were aware of a trend where thieves are using Bluetooth Technology to track down Electronic Devices that are being left inside of cars. Reporter Livermore Police sergeant tim lendman downloaded a common bluetooth locator app, normally used for finding lost ear buds, for example. But thieves are using it for a different purpose. A thief would take a bluetooth scanner much like this and walk up towards the vehicle and we can see changing signal strength on bluetooth devices. And by Walking Around a vehicle, i can often target where that device might be located. And its approximate signal strength to know im going to steal from this vehicle, not another vehicle. Reporter we tried it in this parking lot and you can see how the signal strengths are changing as we drive closer or farther from vehicles. Thats how thieves are able to hone in on hidden devices. I have never heard of that before. But it doesnt surprise me. Yeah. Some smart thieves out there. Reporter luckily, the solution is simple. Just turn off bluetooth. Or better yet, turn the device off completely, because even laptops that are in sleep mode are still giving off a signal. But that may take some getting used to for teenagers justin koshy and vishnu dhavala. We always usually have bluetooth on, most of us have air pods on and so its just always on for us. Now were kind of worried about keeping bluetooth on. Reporter john casson and josh raritan work in sales and part of the companys territory is in oakland. In just the first week of august, there were 240 burglaries reported citywide and 201 of them were for cars. In some places, its just become accepted. The suburbs, it doesnt happen as often. But your more large larger cities, i think they shrug it off and it happens. Yeah. Reporter so its just part of life for us now . Yeah. To an extent. Reporter its kind of sad. It is. It is. Reporter but that doesnt mean people have to make it easy for the thieves. Take it with you or turn it off. You may think its hidden away, but like so many things in the online world, your device is constantly clamoring for attention. Absolutely is. So just so you know the Police Departments in San Francisco, oakland, san jose and vallejo issued an alert last week about the use of bluetooth in car breakins. One more thing for us to think about. Something we dont have to think about is the weather. Which is why we have jess here. A little bit this afternoon into the inland areas but temperatures right now, just along the coast, theyre mostly in the upper 50s and lower 60s. And were pretty much topping off there this afternoon. Thanks to the marine layer keeping us nice and cool. Now the time right now is 6 18. Official sunrise 6 21. So glad were going to be able to see it flight just kidding the marine layer is very thick for us this morning in areas like marin even down into San Francisco and along the coastline waking up it looks a lot different though off into areas like the Santa Clara Valley and even off into the east bay. Notice how that marine layer really pulls itself back fast just into the lunchtime hours and suddenly we have clear skies from redwood city down into the Santa Clara Valley. Ranging right back up along the highways even stretching into concord and napa this afternoon. But its still cloudy along our coastline. Near pacifica and halfmoon bay. So with that in mind, this is what were waking up to this morning. Near san jose, actually all throughout the Santa Clara Valley for that matter, just a little bit of the cloud layer still waking up us as the sun starts to rise above the mountains. 50s for now and 60s just around of course 8 00 a. M. And10 00 a. M. And then topping off in the 80s in the afternoon throughout the Santa Clara Valley. Lets head up into oakland though. Where weve been monitoring that air quality all morning long. The worst spots currently, closer to el cerrito and berkeley, and even ranging up into spots closer to the Carquinez Strait too. Back to the temperatures real fast. Stay below average today. Low to mid60s around lunchtime and then the upper 60s for our daytime highs. Thats the case for us near oakland and seen San Francisco across the bay bridge. Were expecting 80s today off into the east inland hills. A mild forecast for us now. Low pressure still moving its way in. Whats interesting is Tropical Storm eugene, or what once was, is starting to wring out the last of its energy into california. Heres what it looks like currently just on the satellite and radar. I mean were going to continue to track the system as it sweeps in closer to San Francisco. Bringing us some clouds in the friday forecast. A chance of light drizzle fir anything. For the most part all the models really just showing that light cloud layer in the east bay. Temperatures this weekend for outside lands 60s. Daybyday. We get warmer though. Only have a day pass and its sunday. You are in luck. The best weather of the the whole weekend. 80s for now and upper 90s and potentially triple digits off into the east inland hills like brentwood and fairfield and even over into antioch. Its going to be a warm one for us this weekend. A very warm weekend too in San Francisco. Once we head into sunday and monday. Well see 70s there with upper 80s for our friends all the way up in the north bay. Gianna, how are the roads. Yeah looking little gloomy, jess for sure. Right at the Golden Gate Bridge. Im going to start off with that because limited visibility will be an issue now. Out of marin county into San Francisco, id get going. Busy conditions coming off 101 getting on the bridge and improve a little bit getting past the foggy spot into the city. But it is also slick out there. So your wipers will be going as well. Be extra careful as you travel through there. 101 the rest of the way through San Francisco, san mateo, all clear. You also get the thumbs up on the dunbarton bridge but south of there we are still dealing with the Traffic Alert. Just got the update and chp and they are still out there. Still very active scene and unfortunately an investigation is under way. This was due to a deadly crash. One person died in the accident. It happened overnight. South 101 connector to south 85 and Mountain View is completely shut down. At least that hov lane is until further notice. Traffic still pretty light there. Not light at the bay bridge though. Metering lights are on and it is busy heading into San Francisco. Lets take a look at other parts of our communities in the bay area. If you are getting ready to take that ride along 880, san leandro, hayward, right here you can you can see traffic is already stacking up on the southbound side and weve got brake lights heading into the Altamont Pass as well. All the supercommuners good morning to you. Getting ready to head out the door, this is whats in store for you. Busy here and you see some busy conditions near the dublin interchange as well. It is 6 21. The niners are stacked on defense this year, with talent up front and in the secondary. But one of their playmakers has a hidden talent. Were going to show you that in this mornings red and gold report. Amanda . Ooh. Who could it be . Plus a live look outside near the port of oakland and you might be smelling smoke right now if you are nearby. The fire still smoldering from a recycling facili its no secret the 49ers have one of the most talented rosters in the nfl on the field. But what you may not know is that one of the niners Fan Favorites actually has a hidden talent. Our vern glenn explains in this mornings red and gold report. Reporter wednesday was a travel day for the 49ers as they prepare to take on the vegas raiders this sunday for the preseason opener. Right here on kpix. Last week, i caught up with linebacker fred warner who might have been using his down time to work on his other hobby. Did you know how to juggle . You know how to juggle, vern . I do not. But i can watch. No . Come on man, its so easy. Just throw them like that one after another. You toss them up like that. You cant do that . Reporter fun fact about warner. Hes a great juggler. So good, in fact, you will see him juggling footballs on the practice field. Hows that for hand eye coordination . Theres a reason these guys are professionals. Fred called me out. Yeah, ive got some work to do. Give it a try, lets see it, vern. Just kind of you have to toss one up with the left hand and then youre gonna catch it with the other hand. Uhoh, uhoh, you have to start somewhere. You can do it like this, just trying to toss it back and forth with one hand. Try that out. Reporter jeez. No. Okay. Were right there. Were going to work on it, vern. Reporter i suck, fred. I suck. With the red and gold report, im vern glenn. Okay. Fred warner. It is not that easy to juggle and bravo to you vern for trying. You can see all the preseason games right here on cbs news bay area for the 49ers and starting just a couple of days on sunday. Meanwhile, our Juliette Goodrich and vern glenn, they will be reporting live from las vegas starting today. So dont miss that. Well, 6 26 right now. Stanfordand cal still playing the waiting game this morning. Well explain why the schools are stuck in limbo. Plus a live look at the pictures of the port of oakland. You can see the smoke and the flames still burning there from a recycling facility. Were looking at the air quality now and what it and right now on cbs news bay area, at 6 30, the wildfires on maui and hawaii have killed at least 36 people. And have destroyed entire neighborhoods in the Historic Town of lahaina. Crews are battling blazes in several places on the island and thousands of residents were forced to evacuate and some even jumping into the ocean to see to escape the flames there. You can see the devastation this has caused. On wednesday, more than 10,000 visitors flew out of the island. Many others still stranded and well have much more on the devastation in just a couple of minutes. A live look at oakland now where that fire still burning near the citys port. And from what we know, people even in neighboring cities cannot escape the smell. The Oakland Fire Department said those flames started around 6 00 p. M. Yesterday at schnitzer steel a recycling center on embarcadero west and added it was under control just before 10 00 p. M. But clearly smoke still affecting many people. Shawn chitnis is live at the alameda ferry where many people are waking up to the air advisory. Reporter thats right. If you didnt smell the smoke or see it on your way coming to this location, once you get here to board the ferry you cannot miss it. Let me step aside to get a sense of what we can see here. We know the fire has now been burning and the crews there have been responding for over 12 hours and still right now we canclearly see flames at that site and then the thick darker smoke coming right above and going straight up into the clouds. You can notice the difference which really give you a sense of again how thick these clouds are. One update that we have just gotten is that although the fire continues to burn and it looks significant here, we are being told that the debris has slunk considerably. And so there is a little bit of progress being made there. Now lets take a look at what was happening yesterday. Because this is when it all began late in the afternoon, early evening in oakland. Thats when people were firststarting to notice that that fire was happening here. People telling us they were able to smell it even when they were inside. Some folks at restaurants. And thats why that air advisory is still there when it comes to the air quality. Were being told that if you can smell the smoke, you need to go inside and make sure both the doors and windows are closed. Heres a listen to what one person said while they were out and about at oakland yesterday. You can see like all the smoke. Just kind of in a in the air and you can see its like going towards alameda. Reporter and so while some people were at Jack London Square yesterday, we were told that they were noticing the smoke inside a restaurant and so some of the businesses there decided to actually start handing out masks in the hope to try and help people to deal with this smoke. And we do know that the Oakland Fire Department called out their hazmat team to investigate and Start Testing the air quality. Looking for updates on that. We do want to point out though that there is again some progress that is happening here and we have been hearing some explosions actually this morning. And the Fire Department is working to tell us exactly what that might be. So a lot to deal with as they are now battling this fire for about 12 hours. Amanda . Back to you. I cant imagine all the unknowns within that pile of debris and what theyre actually dealing with within that. So obviously very complicated situation there. Shawn, thank you for the live report and the updates too. All right, lets bring in first alert meteorologist jessica birch whos keeping an eye on the air quality that shawn kept mentioning. A lot of people that are not in the area that are smelling it. The winds are moving in the onshore flow direction. See it sweep to areas like the street even. Zoom in right now to current air quality, all throughout the bay area, for most of us it is green but in the localized central spots close to west oakland and oakland and even berkeley, poor air quality and even Hazardous Conditions and very unhealthy conditions along the hills. So keep that in mind if you are do live in the local areas. Earlier this morning i was watching the Carquinez Strait. The air quality is improving invallejo and benicia. But as we take a look at the winds theyre going to get gustier in the afternoon hours. That onshore flow just around 5 00 tonight and anywhere up to around 20, even 30 Miles Per Hour along the coast. Actually 20 Miles Per Hour at the coast max. Were going to watch that closely in the evening hours too. Its drizzly and cool and misty along the Golden Gate Bridge this morning. Winds are relatively light right now and continue to monitor the drizzle in the forecast for us because its going to amount to about 0. 01 at max along the coast but thats the trend for us. I mean the past couple of mornings weve been seeing this so far. Upper 50s right now and low 60s and grab the jacket and it is cool and cloudy along the coast. Well see sunnier skies into the afternoon hours today. Throughout the Santa Clara Valley, like were looking at right now from our Black Mountain cam with that sun slowly helping breaking apart that marine layer. All the way down in the Santa Clara Valley into this afternoon. Were expecting 60s from the coast and the bay and 80s in the inland areas and more on that in a bit. For now over to you, gianna. Yeah, i have the wipers going all morning for the drive in. And especially through San Francisco as well. So just keep that in mind. All right, if youre getting ready to head out the door and making the trek across the bay bridge, id get going. Its busy. Look at the backup already now. Its already beyond the 880 overpass and almost to the foot of the maze. And it is crowded across the upper deck heading into San Francisco. That other ride into the city, via the Golden Gate Bridge, thats a little tough due to visibility. So were tracking some slightly slower speeds along 101. And into the waldo grade and sausalito and its just misty and icky out there. In that area this morning. Little rough. All right, some brake lights along 880 as well. More about that coming up in the next report. Amanda . Elizabeth get back to hawaii the fastmoving wildfires have killed at least 36 people on the island of maui. The flames have destroyed entire neighborhoods in the Historic Town of lahaina. Jonathan vigliotti is on the ground in maui with the latest on the disaster there. Flush and flush. Reporter the Historic Town of lahaina was hardest hit and this is the only road in which at hour is closed down only for evacuations. We were able to gain access to the town late last night and what we saw could only be described as pure devastation. I spoke with one survivor who described the flames as burning so hot, they appeared white. And those flames ripped through homes and ripped through hotels and businesses. Destroying everything in their path. Officials have confirmed at this hour at least 36 people have died. But there is concern that that number could only continue to grow as the days go on. This fire first began tuesday afternoon and it quickly exploded because of hurricaneforce winds. Were talking wind gusts up to 70 Miles Per Hour. And in fact, across the island, there are a total of three wildfires currently burning. And one miraculous story, 14 people including two children escaped the flames by actually running into the ocean. They were rescued eventually by the coast guard. At this hour, there are thousands of people who are under mandatory evacuations including thousands of stranded tourists. All of this meanwhile as a very active search and rescue effort continues here on the island of maui. Absolutely heartbreaking for all those people affected by this. For all the latest developments from hawaii and more of the dramatic images coming out of maui, you can go to kpix. Com. Gianna . Just devastating to see that area up in flames like that. All right, lets go to a developing story. Atlantic coast conference president s have chosen not to vote on whether to include stanford and cal to its league. So this comes after most of the schools in the pac12 left in the last couple of weeks. Leaving the two nor cal schools in limbo. Now sources close to the situation said its clear expanding to the west coast has proven to be difficult. Stanford and cal have been eyeing other conferences to join like the big 10. 6 37. The government just released the july report on inflation this morning. So cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger joins us live now from new york. And jill, inflation has come down dramatically since peaking over 9 last summer. So what are we seeing happen in july with that . Reporter well, july, we saw prices increase a bit. They were up 3. 2 from a year ago. Thats up from the june reading of 3 annual increase. Now i have to say that the weird quirk of this rise, the annual rise, has more to do with what was going on in june and july of last year. Thats called a base effect. So i would not worry too much and in fact the report came in somewhat better than expected. The core rate ticked down by 0. 1 . Core rate up by 4. 7 from a year ago. Overall, this report showed that inflation is still coming down. It is coming down in a lot of the categories that many people care about. Yeah, and thats what a lot of people are keeping an eye on too but the Housing Price component of the report, jill. Has remained elevated. Was there any easing last month with it . Reporter yeah, this is called shelter in the cpi report. And its been a real thorn in the side of economists. It shows a 7. 7 increase from a year ago. Thats down slightly from 7. 8 in the previous month. But this real this component has come under pressure. A lot of economists i speak to, they say look, there are more timely measures of rent that are showing moderation. So look to say the apartment lists National Rent report and in august, they found on average, apartments today, nationally, are renting for less than they did a year ago. Thats a huge improvement when we were seeing double digit increases last year. What i want to point out is that shelter component should come down in the future and its important because the bureau of labor statistics itself has said to us that part of that big growth in the 3. 2 . 90 of it is attributable to shelter. I can believe that. So jill, the feds next policy meeting is not until september. What will the central bank be watching from now until then . Reporter chair powell has said that they want to see inflation come down. They want to see a cooling in labor Market Conditions and that means the fed who says they really care about data is going to have another month of inflation data before the next policy meeting in september. Right now, the bond market is betting, 50 50, that they raise rates by a quarter of a percentage point. And that could happen at the september meeting. But it could also happen at the november meting. So right now, probably i would say a 50 50 shot you get another quarter point. Im guessing theyll pause in september and wait to see even more data. All right. This is definitely wait and see situation. A lot of people looking to see if the Interest Rates are going to go up even more. All right, jill, thank you so much. For more analysis go to jillonmoney. Com. All right, lets see whats coming up later on cbs mornings starting in a few minutes. Gayle king joining us live from new york. Good morning, what do you have going on today . Reporter good morning amanda. We are here live in color alert and available coming up on cbs mornings. Start with this. Some major tragedy and i know you all have been talking about it too. Unfolding right now on the Hawaiian Island of maui. Thats where wildfire has claimed dozens of lives. Jonathan vigliotti is on the ground there. Hes talking with peoples lives what can you say looking at these pictures . Have been turned upside down. Anthony mason remembers the life and legacy of the legendaryrock roller that would be Robbie Robertson of the band. And you can say this. Its not been a cruel summer for taylor swift. My apologies to taylor but i love that song. The economic boom from her eras tour has been the style of the season. How its creating good karma for cities across the country. Taylor is killing it on the roads. Well see you at 7 00. Thats about a little over 15 minutes from now. Back to you. Absolutely. No bad blood here. Have you been to the taylor concert . I was there the night before you were. What did you think . Yep. Me too. Me too. I would go see that show again and it was well over three hours and 45 minutes. I would go again. Absolutely. Me too. Maybe well have to go together. All right, thank you so much. All right, jess . Lets get a look of whats happening with our weather. You know. It is beautiful and its mild. Its cool for us today. Remember yesterday . Off into the east bay when we saw sunshine and 80s in sight . Pretty much a repeat for us today so heading into this afternoon, if you live along the coast, closer to areas like halfmoon bay and pacifica, even up into stinson beach, were still dealing with the cloudy and cool setup along the coast. But for the rest of us, this marine layer like we see right now from Black Mountain cam overlaying the whole Santa Clara Valley its going to pull back later into this afternoon as daytime highs slowly start to rise from the 60s all the way into the 70s and then in the 80s this afternoon. For san jose, so its a nice mild setup for us today. Were going to continue to see that trend really as we head into the weekend forecast. With big warmup as early as sunday. Thatsgoing to impact people at outside lands and anyone getting ready for school next week. A warm one as we kick off next workweeks forecast and all throughout the School Forecast too. So 60s for us today in the Santa Clara Valley. Along the coastline. 80s all the way down into the Santa Clara Valley. As we head off into the inland east bay, 90 today in brentwood. In the corner triple digits again as soon as sunday. Enjoy the weather while we have it. 66 today in the heart of San Francisco. Ranging north. Were sitting 93 this afternoon in yucaipa. Were all doing something different. Were kind of around average just near concord and pleasanton. Still about nine degrees below average in vallejo. Tropical storm eugene. Well, wassilieff of it at least is still moving into Southern California and eventually the central ser are and move over to us in the friday forecast. This is kind of what it looks like right now on the models. A glimpse just barely any of moisture into the south bay for the fridaysetup. Really just going to be a cloudy and cool friday forecast for us. Thats how were going to kick off the weekend as we head all the way throughout friday and saturday and sunday with partly cloudy skies. A little bit of the offshore flow. 60s for us for the friends heading out the outside lands but did you notice it was warmer daybyday . If you have only a day pass or thinking about one, maybe sunday is the best day to go if you want to get out there and enjoy a warmer outfit or at least a warmer attire outfit. Heres what we have though for the rest of us in the bay area. You are definitely going to want tank tops and shorts this weekend in the inland east bay. Expecting upper 90s and even triple digits off into the east inland hills. 70s for us in the heart of San Francisco. 70s even across the bay bridge even into oakland with 80s and 70s flirting back and forth down into the Santa Clara Valley. All right, thank you. Up dated you on this deadly crash along 101. I just word from chp on the update. Still out there. The investigation is under way. Closures are south 101, to 85. But two lanes that are blocked on the express lanes to southbound 85 and one lane on southbound 101. So we are now starting to see more cars out there on the roadway and making that ride in and around that area. It is countercommute but northbound certainly getting busy heading out of Mountain View this morning. So if you are commuting out of the south bay this morning and go along 101. Give yourself extra time especially in the area closer to where the trouble spot is and its getting slow in the usual hotspots right around the 280 and 680 connector. Business as usual at the bay bridge. Busy at the toll plaza toll plaza and metering lights are on and you have the brake lights across the upper deck as well. Theres the Golden Gate Bridge. A lot of fog there and a lot of mist. Slick surfaces and be extra careful traveling through there. A look at other parts of the bay area right now. Live look here at the san mateo bridge and a quick live look at 880 both areas getting busy this morning. Well, uber will now let you record your ride. San francisco is the first California City with access to this feature. More cities will actually follow next week. You will be able to record audio while you are in the car. Uber says the audio is encrypted and they wont be able to hear it unless its submitted in a safety report. Amanda . Over the summer Governor Newsom signed a new bill to require Public School students to undergo screening for dyslexia. Kelsi thorud spoke with one family who says their lives would have been different if the program had been in place earlier. Reporter this summer, california joined 40 other states by signing a bill into law that now mandates students who are in grades kindergarten through second grade to be screened for dyslexia. Its a Long Time Coming for advocates who have been fighting for screenings like this for close to a decade. I spoke with one family who says that if their son had been screened at a young age, his experience in school would have been much different. It was really confusing. And it was really difficult. Because he was angry. And he was anxious. Reporter ten years ago, when jennifer salmas son rhys was entering kindergarten, she quickly noticed that something was off. You know, there was always a little bit of like yes, you know, i know his reading is you know, were making sure that hes on track. We dont see anything any issues there. Reporter but jennifer says despite what teachers were telling her, she knew rhys was really struggling. It eventually got so bad, that by the time rhys was in third grade, he started refusing to go to school. He would start monday happy to go to school. He would walk to school with his brother. And by wednesday, i would find him maybe i would have to go upstairs to pull him out. Hed be under the bed. Reporter rhys says he remembers that time vividly. He felt confused and angry because he didnt know why he was struggling. And he could tell the adults around him didnt know either. When you are just expected to know how to be able to do you know, the things that you cant, and not no one understands whats happening, you your parents and your teachers, and anyone, its just hard. Reporter jennifer says at that point, her family knew something had to be done. So they paid for a private screening. It was the results of that screening that showed rhys was dyslexic. Jennifer told me she was happy to finally have an answer to what was going on. But because the diagnosis came so late, she says rhys was so far behind in learning, that she had no choice but to pull him out of Public School and put him in a special private school just for students with dyslexia. And that was really hard. Because we had a Great Community school. He loved his friends. He could walk to school. Reporter rhys spent two years at that Specialized School before transferring back to Public School. Its something jennifer believes may not have had to happen if only rhys would have been screened right when he entered kindergarten. If it had been done when he was much younger, he would have been able to capture a lot more and learn much more quickly. Reporter thats why for years after, jennifer, along with many other parents of dyslexic children, fought to try and get the state to mandate dyslexia screenings for all students entering grade school. And this summer she finally won. California became the 41st state to mandate dyslexia screenings for students in grades ksecond. Yeah, its thrilling, its really, really exciting. Reporter rhys is now entering his sophomore year of high school. And doing better than ever. He loves math and science and finally has the tools he needs to thrive in the classroom. I feel great. I mean, i can i finally have figured out how i learn and how to advocate for myself in front of my teachers. Reporter jennifer told me shes never been more proud of rhys. It took a lot for her family to get to this point and thats why shes so happy other families will have a resource she never did. A resource she hopes will help families avoid the stress hers endured, but more importantly a resource that will help every child like rhys, thrive, from the very start. Hes an amazing amazing young man. Very proud of him. And you know, hes been through a lot. But hes coming on to the other side. Reporter advocates say the screenings are really just a first step. They also want to see more resources in the classroom for dyslexic students and they also want to see more education for teachers on how to best support these students. Definitely seeing more growth in that. Would help so much. So mean mile, the new law takes effect in the 2025 2026 school year. 6 54. We are looking live near the port of oakland right here look at the flames and all that smoke. You can see all the smoke from the fire from the recycling facility. So what does it mean exactly for our air quality . You might be smelling it yourse affordablele design. Endlesess possibililities. Ikea. Good morning. Lets get you updated on this spill spot weve been following all morning long. A Traffic Alert continues and now starting to see delays there in both directions. South 101 connector to south 85 and chp just updated the lane closures. Two lanes are blocked. The express lane on south 85 and one lane shut down on southbound 101. Northbound 101 starting to get busy. Were seeing some brake lights there. If your ride takes you out of san jose this morning into Mountain View, its okay in some spots. Certainly stop and go. But give myself extra time especially getting closer to the 7 00 hour where things really start getting busy on the freeways. Speaking of busy, bay bridge toll plaza, lots of brake lights heading into the city. That east bay ride a busy one off the eastshore freeway. Wow. Look at the Golden Gate Bridge. Look at that fog, jess. Just on the span there. You know its going to stay cool and cloudy along the coast pretty much all day long. Were going to see the sunnier spots pretty much in the inland areas like san jose this afternoon were hitting 82 degrees there. A beautiful forecast for us for our thursday setup. Still cool and cloudy for our daytime highs. Only sitting in the 60s along the coast though. So were a little bit below average today near pacifica and a little bit above average in the east inland areas like antioch and concord. A beautiful forecast for us in the next couple of days. More on that coming up. Its a fan favorite. The original track of taylor swifts hit song shake it off first came out in 2014. On her album 1989.
