Compared to last year when we had about 4,700 people a day. So an increase, but not like last year. And still some people are getting sick. I was joking as we have not spoken in a long time. Are you concerned about this particular variant that it could lead to a bigger surge once they head back to school . I think that we might see a bump, but nothing like what we have seen in the last three summers. We will probably see a bigger increase in the wintertime. So im hoping that this will press and then come down very quickly as we would call it a swell more than a surge. In the winter, we might see a larger number of cases increase. Just to remind folks the symptoms to look out for as you said earlier that it is very similar to the common cold. So any symptoms that might be a red flag for covid . What weve been seeing over time is that loss of smell is going down the charts very quickly, which will make people not usually think of the stuffy nose ort runny nose, but thats whats the number one symptom with this new variant. And so it looks like the allergies, even more than the other variants. And so given all the treatments that are out there and even more information and the vaccines that we have for covid and if you do catch covid. Should you follow the similar protocols that we have been learning about . Isolating and staying away from people for at least a couple of weeks . What do you recommend as a doctor . And so yes, its similar rules. Generally five days of isolation. After the five if you do test negative, you could take off your mask. But from day five. You could start going out into the community freely, wearing a mask until day ten. After day ten, even if your test is positive for most people, i wouldnt worry about it as being transmissible virus from the information that you have so far, so thats kind of what we know. It is more similar to the past differences. Got it. All right, always a pleasure to have you on. Same here. Schools are back in session. For parents, that means backtoschool shopping, which can get expensive. Today the center in san rafael handing out backpacks filled with School Supplies to 170 local children. We spoke to one family with four kids who says that event helps keep a roof over their heads. To the point where you dont have to worry about that at all. This alone is just amazing. When we first came to do this, i dont remember how long ago. Maybe eight years ago when we first did this on the brink of losing where we were losing. And so at that time, definitely stopped it from happening. And each registered child received a 100 gift card for a new school clothes. This event has many districts in the bay area kick off their school year. San jose schools, tay start tomorrow on august 10. San francisco, they start a week from today in august. Kelsi thorud spoke to one family about how their lives would have been a lot different if the program had been in place earlier. Reporter this summer california joined 40 other states by signing a bill into law that now mandates students who are in grades kindergarten through second grade to be screened for dyslexia. It is a Long Time Coming for advocates fighting for screenings like this for close to a decade. I spoke to one family who says if their son had been screened at a young age, his experience in school would have been much different. It was confusing and real difficult because he was angry and he was anxious. Reporter ten years ago when they were entering kindergarten, she quickly noticed that something was off. You know, there was always a little bit of yes, i know the reading, that were making sure hes on track. We dont see anything, any issues there. Reporter but jennifer says despite what teachers were telling her, she knew reese was struggling. Eventually it got so bad that by the time reese was in third grade, he started refusing to go to school. He would start monday happy to go to school and he would walk to school with his brother. By wednesday, i would find him maybe going upstairs to pull him out. Reporter and he remembers that time vividly. He felt confused and angry because he did not know why he was struggling as he could tell the adults around him didnt know either. When youre expected to know how to be able to do any of the things you cant and no one understands whats happening, you, your parents, your teachers, anyone, its just hard. Reporter jennifer says at that point, her family knew something needed to be done, so they paid for a private screening. It was the results of that screening that showed reese was dyslexic. She was happy to finally have an answer on what was going on. But because the constitution came so late, she says he was so far behind in learning that she had no choice, but to pull him out of Public School and put him in a special private school just for students with dyslexia. And that was really hard because we had a Great Community school. He loved his friends, he could walk to school. Reporter reese spent two years at that Specialized School before transferring back to Public School. It is something jennifer believes may not have had to happen if only reese would have been screened right when he entered kindergarten. If it would have been done when he was younger, then he would have been able to capture a lot more and quickly. Reporter thats why for years after, jennifer, along with many other parents of dyslexic children fought to try to get the state to mandate screenings for all students entering grade school. This summer, she finally won. California became the 41st state to mandate the screenings for students k through 2. Yeah, its thrilling. Its really exciting. Reporter reese is now entering his sophomore year of high school, doing better than ever. He loves math and science and finally has the tools that he needs to thrive in the classroom. I feel great. I mean i finally figured out how i learn, how to advocate for myself and in front of my teachers. Reporter she told e me she has never been more proud of reese. It took a lot for their family to get to this point and that is why she is so happy other families will have a resource she never did. A resource to help families avoid the stress hers endured, but a resource that will help every child like reese who thrive from the very start. Hes amazing. Hes an amazing young man. Im very proud of him. You know, hes been through a lot, but hes coming on the other side. Reporter and they say these screenings are really just a first step. They also want to see more resources in the classroom for dyslexic students. They also want to see more education for teachers on how to best support these students. Thats a huge step forward. This new law will take effect starting in the 2025, 2026 school year. When negotiations are set to resume today between the city of san jose and the unions representing its city workers.
