Good morning. Im jane pauley and this is sunday morning. As anyone who has ventured outside knows all too well, weather is the story of this summer, if not our time. Reports of extreme heat and record high temperatures now almost routine. 2023 is on track to be the hottest year ever recorded. But it may be that one town scorches them all. Phoenix. One of our Fastest Growing cities can also lay claim to being one of our hottest. David pogue checks out its triple digit woes. More than 100 million americans under heat alerts. Reporter 2023 has broken all kinds of records, but not the good kind. Scientists say july is the earths hottest month in recorded history. Welcome to your future. This is what you are facing in what is being projected to be an increasingly hot United States. We are all going to get hotter. Reporter ahead on sunday morning, a cold, hard look at this summers freakish heat. Actor michael j. Fox has now lived more than half his life with parkinsons disease. This morning ill sit down with him as fox looks back with laughter and tears. Whoa he made it look easy. But not anymore. My life is set up so i can pack parkinsons along if i have to. Reporter at some point, parkinsonss going to make the call for you, isnt it . Every day is suffering, but thats the way it is. Who do i see about that . Coming up, michael j. Fox looks back. As for our martha teichner, you might say this morning she is in hog heaven. Reporter once upon a time, nigel here looked like this. And it was love at first sight. The most delicious little creature you have ever seen. Reporter his breeder said he was a teacup pig and wouldnt get much bigger. But he did. Is there such a thing as a teacup pig . No. Reporter the truth about fairy tale pigs later this sunday morning. From our david marartin, a lookok at newly developed amerin mine clearing equipment being put to the test in ukraine. Elizabeth palmer assesses the dangerous present and worrisome future of the island nation of taiwan. Robert costa catches up with a toughtalking politician taking on former president trump, new jerseys Chris Christie. We will go on a very stylish Pleasure Cruise with our seth doane. Plus, a story from Steve Hartman and more this sunday morning for the 6th of august, 2023. Well be back after this. Politicians may still debate it, but its getting harder to desnie, with temperatures climbing to new heights everywhere. Somethings going on out there. David pogue takes us to phoenix where the heat is on. Reporter the last eight years have been the hottest years ever measured on th planet. July was the hottest month ever recorded. July 6th was the hottest day. All over the planet the heat broke temperature records, including in siberia. One 03 degrees. More than after the u. S. Population was subject to heat warnings in july. Here in phoenix, arizona, the heat has broken all kinds of records, including the longest streak of consecutive days where the temperature hit 110 degrees or hotter. Really cooking in phoenix, 118 degrees. Tomorrow will be even hotter. Reporter and its not just the hot air thats dangerous. Its the surfaces. This Steering Wheel 162. 5. This sidewalk is 144 fahrenheit. Thats hot enough to burn your dogs paws in 60 seconds. And this playground slide for children 182. 8 degrees. People say you live in phoenix, its a tdry heat. 105 is not bad. But i want to stress strongly, nobody is acclimated to 115, 118 degrees. More troublesome, is the fact that the reporter Melissa Guardaro is an extreme heat researcher at Arizona State university. Have there been in phoenix hospitals a rise in admissions . Absolutely. The most number of hospital admissions for heat stress that we have ever had. Reporter what can you tell us about the ways your life changes during a heatwave like this . You dont work out outdoors at 11 00. You go and hike at 5 or 6 00 in the morning. I actually have mittens in my car so when the Steering Wheel is really hot, i put my mittens on. Thats how i drive. Reporter you know you are living in a hot place when you have to keep oven mitts in your glove compartment. Probably not there, because you cant touch the metal tab. Reporter why has so much of the country been scorching so long . Allow me to introduce that breakout weather term of 2023, the heat dome. Its an area of High Pressure way up high that traps the warm air like the lid on a pot. It traps the heat. It stops rain from moving in to cool us off. It just sits there. Unfortunately, not every area under the heat dome suffers equally. You want to know who gets the worst of it . Cities. Cities are where heat comes to stay and comes to live. Reporter becca benner is a director of climate issues at the nonprofit nature conservancy. Cities on average are several degrees warmer than the surrounding areas. Just because of so much pavement, it tends to absorb heat better and reflect heat better. Reporter they call it the urban heat island effect. Too much pavement. Not enough trees and greenery to cool things off. The heat island effect is worst in the poorer areas of our cities where there arent many trees and even the bus stops dont always offer shade. Carlos galves lives in phoenix without airconditioning, electricity, or even running water. The thermometer on his wall registers 109. Are you able to sleep in this heat . Translator if i sleep for half an hour, ill lie awake for an hour after that because its so hot. Reporter do you have some tricks to stay cool in here . Translator i drink a lot of water and twice a day i pour a bucket of water on myself, and i just try to rest in the evening. Reporter in phoenix, you can get Free Transportation to the citys 90 cooling centers. Ever since he collapsed from the heat last month, he is worried about leaving his house. Translator i am afraid i could faint again if i go out during the day, so i wait until the sun is going down to go out to get ice or water are i even for people who have airconditioning, not everyone can afford to use it. The average bill for ac in phoenix is over 450 a month. We have a group of people who have to make very difficult choices. Do i pay for airconditioning or do i pay rent. This kind of heatwave is bringing up all the chinks in the infrastructure. Reporter President Biden announced small steps towards adapting to dangerous heat like expanding access to drinking water, improving weather forecasts, and setting up a heat alert system. We should be protecting workers from hazardous conditions. Reporter but there is much more to be done. City planners should develop heat infrastructure like cooling centers and strategic greenery, and the federal government should start taking sheet as seriously as it treats other climate disasters. Fema has never declared extreme heat as a disaster. Reporter wait. So flooding and hurricanes, all those things designated federal disaster areas, but not heat . Not heat. Standing up more cooling centers, providing Greater Services for people, no, that is not reimbursed by the government because there has never been a fema extreme heat declared disaster. Reporter which climate crcry disaster kills the most people . Extreme heat is the climate disaster that kills the most people. In fact, it kills more people than all of the other disasters combined. We kind of have a joke here that we show a picture of before a heatwave and then show a picture after a heatwave and its the same picture, and thats part of the problem because people see tornados and houses are upended and hurricanes and trees and utility poles, and its this invisible killer. Reporter so it sounds like heat, among the various climate disasters, does not get enough love from the media and the governor . It absolutely does not get enough love. Reporter of course, heatwaves arent the only result of the warming planet. Heat also dries out vegetation and we get fires. Heat evaporates the land so we get droughts. Heat evaporates the oceans so we get hurricanes. The nature conservancys becca benner cautions us not to think of this summers heat as something freakish and rare. Its the new normal. It is no longer a future threat. We are living this now. So whether your basement just flooded, whether you just had to evacuate for a fire, whether its too hot for you to go outside and enjoy yourself, that means we are now experiencing some of the impacts of climate change. We have to reduce emissions and we have to do it immediately and faster. Ive strtruggled witith generalizezed myasthenenia gr. But the pipicture started chchanging whwhen i startrted on vyvgvga. Martha teichner this morning shares a very special pig tale. Reporter once upon a time, there were three little pigs. Nigel, livvie, and rayne. Because this isnt that tale. There is no blowing down of houses and no big, bad wolf. But there is a fairy godmother, as we shall see. But first, nigels back story. He was the size of a loaf of wonder bread. And he was pink and the most delicious little creature you have ever seen. Reporter when they got him in 2016, life coach Nancy Steiner and her husband, writer david michaelis, were cold finale was a socalled teacup pig. 40 pounds max full grown. It really went from love at first sight to a fullblown love affair. We loved him. The bigger he got, the more we loved him. Reporter and he did get bigger. And bigger. And bigger. I would give him a treat for getting out of bed, which was tempurpedic. And i would give him a treat for leaving his room, which was airconditioned. A treat for going outside. Nigel weighed over 250 pounds. He couldnt stand up. Reporter by age 3, so much fat had grown over his eyes, nigel couldnt see. Obesity is a big problem. Reporter enter susan magidson. The fairy godmother in this story. Can obesity kill a pig . Yes. Certainly its proven to shorten their Life Expectancy by six to ten years. Reporter she came and collected nigel and drove him three hours to ross mill farm. The potbelly pig sanctuary she runs in pennsylvania where he has been ever since. They visit him regularly. She put nigel on a diet. And discovered he had an aptitude. Nigel, where is your babies, huh . Oh, here. Look at that. He is a boy. He is not a mama. But, you know, nigel has been a really good surrogate mother for babies. Reporter you have heard that term hog heaven, ross mill farm is it. There are pigs everywhere. Big ones, little ones, kitsch y ones. Susan magidson started out breeding potbelly pigs, but pretty soon shifted to rescuing them when it became clear how many people fall out of love with their pigs. So is there such a thing as a teacup pig . No. Not at all. Reporter i bet you didnt know potbelly pgs are crazy about cheerios. Or how about this . Males can reproduce at 2 months old. Females at 4 months. They keep growing until the age of 5 years. Susan magidson has advice for anyone considering a pig as a pet. Take her webinar. Find out what youre getting into. Im trying to keep people from getting them, but there are pig people who are in love with this species. Reporter which is where vivvie and rayne come in. My daughter was excited she is like, come up stairs, see your room. You have to see what i got you for your birthday. Reporter it was 2014 and respiratory therapist peterson was not expecting what her daughter had hidden in her bed. So she pulled the covers back and there was a pig in my bed. And i was thinking, why would you get me a pig . Reporter vivvie grew on her. In every way. One weekend her daughter borrowed her, took the pig camping. It disappeared. So she brought one of vivvies litter mates, you thinking her mother wouldnt notice the switch. When i got home and saw this other pig, i was just not happy about it at all. And i cried. Reporter she posted flyers and, sure enough, campers spotted vivvie. They said, we did cheerios. On my flyer i said that she loves cheerios. Reporter she was caught and she took her home. The second pig, named rayne, stayed. Now, you have to understand that v she also has, count them, a cat, a fish, a tortoise, and three dogs. So, when her house burned down over a year ago, she had a problem. She sent the pigs off to ross mill farm while she looked for a place to live until her house could be rebuilt. A landlord actually agreed to rent to her. Good girl, baby. Here you go. Reporter sisters vivvie and rayne, have their own room. We showed up this last year on what happened to be their 8th birthday. Their treat . The best looking fruit salad any pig could ever want. Just as in that other three little pig story, there is a moral here. Pigs are not for everybody. But for some people, and pigs, there are happy endings. Why is it all worth it . I love them. Good checkup . No, great checkup [laughs] nailed it t again kekeep up the e good work for grgreat checkukups, crest t has you cocovered becae crest prohealalth protects 10 of your mouth for 24 hours. The white house has Just Announced a new package of weaponry for taiwan in an effort to bolster the island nations defenses against a possible invasion from china. So what does the future hold for taiwan . Elizabeth palmer has our sunday journal. Reporter taiwan is a lush tropical island. Everyone agrees it produces some of the worlds finest handpicked tea. And the worlds most sophisticated microchips. It has deep cultural links to china, but is it part of china . Thats where things get messy. Chinas president , xi jinping, insists that it is. And is threatening to impose beijings rule by force. Chinas military has held exercises around taiwan that look a lot like rehearsals for an invasion. But millions of taiwanese see their island as a nation already fully formed. Do you think of taiwan as a country . Yeah, definitely. Reporter this, call it serious difference of opinion, goes back a century to mainland chinas civil war. In 1949, the communists won. They defeated nationalists, fled across the sea to taiwan. To this day, a memorial in the capital taipei honors him. The man who set up a government in taiwan to oppose communist china. 70 careers on, a lively open society has bloomed here. At one of taipeis night markets, friends give me a tour. Busy food stalls catering to serious eaters. In your mind, there is no question taiwan is already an independent country . We have already independence. We have our military. We have our economy system. Our currency. Our people, our policies. Reporter michael cole is a taipei political analyst for the republican institute. For young taiwanese, their only experience is living in liberal democracy, a vibrant liberal democracy with a highly politicized society. Reporter how liberal . Taiwan was the first country in asia to legalize gay marriage. And consider audrey tang, digital minister and asias first transgender cabinet member. I feel blessed that i do not face any discrimination whatsoever in taiwan. Reporter tang is a Software Engineer and a celebrity Whose Mission is to protect taiwans internet from chinese cyberattacks or an invasion. Ensuring proper Communication Infrastructure including the local resilience of the public cloud providers like google, microsoft, amazon in taiwan is our highest priority. Reporter rush hour in taipei. A torrent of commuters head for city center focused simply on getting to work. In spite of chinas looming threat, life ticks along here. Taiwan is a cyclists dream and the tsc bike club includes several expat americans. Is there going to be a war . I hope not. I dont have a crystal ball. I dont think its in anyones interest to have war. I think prevailing heads will prevail and the tensions will subside. Reporter if so, says peter, its going to need some skillful diplomacy. We need to make sure we dont back them too deeply into a corner that they have no choice in their minds dom out fighting. We need to think creatively about how taiwan can position itself in a way not to be too threatening to china. Reporter we took a short flight from taipei to an outlying island, kinnaman, where the last round of actual fighting ended in 1979. These defensive spikes were put here on kinnaman island to rappel Chinese Landing craft. There was a hot war between china and taiwan in living memory, and this was the front line. We can see reporter a kinnaman politician pointed out main lan china almost close enough to swim to. A lot of people think that you are so close to china, might as well be china. Yes, the older people think that, he says, but we have had democracy since the country was founded. Its never been communist. Tending the garden in front of her house, she is one of those older people. Do you feel more chinese or taiwanese . Instantly, she replies, chinese. She may not care that joining china means totalitarian rule, but york wu sure does. He showed me the loft of his b b in a lovingly restored chinesestyle house. We rnt chinas culture, he says, but not its government. I love freedom. I love the opportunity to express ourself freely. Reporter chinas maneuvers this spring were an explicit threat, and so was this graphic released by the military of missiles raining down on the island. The message . Resistance is futile. If china were to act unilaterally, there what be a response. Reporter President Biden has hinted that if china invades, the u. S. Will help. America is already selling weapons to taiwans military. In spite of taiwan increasing its Defense Budget and enforcing mandatory conscription, neither its air force, army or navy is any match for chinas military might. If there is a war, we are going to be destroyed. Reporter so better to avoid it, says richard hu. Taiwan should just join china. But negotiate autonomy. Beijing leave taiwan alone. We could enjoy our freedom and also political system. Reporter there is nothing about modern china under xi jinping that suggests that is possible. Nothing. This is a government and a party that wants complete control. Well, i think there is hope. Reporter its a hope shared by the main political party. But not by taiwanese young people. They watch the Hong Kong Movement for autonomy from china in 2019 get crushed by beijing. They are now praying taiwans democratic dream doesnt die the same way. He is a former federal prosecutor and twoterm governor of new jersey and, once again, he is a candidate for president. Laser focused on a single talking point. Robert costa squares off with Chris Christie. Hey, man, whats your name . The next president. I hope so. Neil, we are going to work hard. Dont you worry. Me and donald trump, how much fun will that be . Get ready, baby. Reporter Chris Christie has always been ready to mix it up. He never got his ass kicked somebody from new jersey before. Reporter he has had that personality for a long time. You should see me when im pissed. Reporter a decade ago, critics called him the bully on americas boardwalk. Then new jerseys governor, christie sat down with sunday mornings tracy smith. Are you a bully . No. Im not a bully. I am a fighter. Going to get thrown in jail, idiot. Reporter bully or not, christie need that attitude and his response to Superstorm Sandy in 2012 im gonna lose it. Reporter his calling cards. Some republicans loved him. One piece at a time, all right . Reporter others, less so, especially after he worked with president obama, a democrat, in the aftermath of the storm. I cant thank the president enough. Hi, governor. Reporter still, enough republicans thought this might be our guy and even christie in the wake of a commanding reelection win in 2013 started to think the presidency could be next. Do you think so at the time . Yeah, i do. We were in really good position, and i felt ready, bob. I mean what i say and i say what i mean and thats what America Needs right now. Reporter but his white house dreams were dashed. The infamous George Washington bridge traffic scandal cast a shadow over his campaign. And then there was donald trump. They are bringing crime. Their rapists, and some i assume are good people. Reporter suddenly, christie wasnt the loudest voice and his 2016 bid sputtered to a stop. These days, after years in the political wilderness, 60yearold Chris Christie is seeking a comeback. I intend to seek the republican nomination for president of the United States in 2024 and i want your support. Thank you. Reporter we met him on the new jersey boardwalk. You think you can beat trump . I am not making any predictions. You cant be wrong. Reporter a big test for christie will come this month at the first republican primary debate in milwaukee. Are you ready . I was born ready, babe. Reporter what are you going to say to trump face to face . Depends what he says. I guarantee i will tell him the truth for 90 minutes. The truth matters. And i think Republican Voters need to hear the truth. Reporter do you think he shows up for the debate . I do. Reporter he keeps suggesting he wont. He loves to tease. Reporter finish the sentence. If trump doesnt show up he is a . Coward. Complete and total coward. A yellow streak so far down his back. Reporter he might think he is elevating the field by showing up. He is elevating . I never seen donald trump elevate anything except for the ego factor. They wont tell you the truth about donald trump. Reporter but christies pitch that he is a truth teller who can save the party from trump who this past week pleaded not guilty to federal criminal charges for his alleged role in trying to overturn the 2020 election is complicated. You know reporter after thrash College Admission shalling in 2016. The trump administration, everyones going to get, wealthy reporter he had an aboutface. I am proud to endorse donald trump. Reporter even vying for a top position in the administration. But after the 2020 election frankly, we did win this election. Reporter christie broke with trump. What did you say in your last conversation . Concede the election to joe biden and go to his inauguration. Reporter what did he say . I will never, ever, ever do that. What else you got . I said, i have nothing else, mr. President , because there is nothing else. Reporter christie knows what critics say. Hypocrite, opportunist, flipflopper. You say you broke in trump in 2020 when he wouldnt concede the election. You must have had character questions about him. When access hollywood happens in 2016, why wasnt that a breaking point for new. Because elections have choices. There is a choice between him and hillary clinton. Reporter some voters might be asking you, you were with trump. May say you were sucking up to trump. What do you say to them . What i said to you. It did happen in one of my early town halls. I said, look, i made a mistake. But i am telling you why i did what i did at the time. Reporter voters with scheduletism about how you are antitrump, with trump, antitrump. I am a good republican. It was clear to me donald trump was going to be the nominee and i had a relationship with him for 15 years and i wanted to make him the best candidate and if he won the best president he could be. I make no apologies for that. I did the best i could for four years and he failed me and he failed the country. And our Election Night in 2020 we stood in the white house and said the election had been stolen when he had no evidence to prove that. That was the breaking point for me. To me there is no turning back. Reporter still, the question lingers over your Campaign Among some republicans. Are you a flipflopper . No. Trump abandoned me. I am no different today than i was when i supported him in 2016. He is the one who kept classified documents against the law lied to lawyers and lied to the government. I had nothing to do with any of that. He d. Reporter on the trail christie is plowing ahead, convinced he can emerge as an alternative to trump eerngs if others arent so sure. None of his secretaries of state would vote for him. Reporter but the voters care. They should. The case has to be made, bob. No one is making the case, no one is. Reporter his case may as well be a flashing alarm. Are you saying you believe trump wants to be a dictator is . I dont think he would have any objection to it if we were willing to give it to him. Reporter you think he is a danger to democracy . I dont think he cares. And the proof of that are his own words when he said its okay to suspend the laws and suspend the constitution, preserve, protect and defend the constitution. Thats what the president takes an oath to do. He said its okay to suspend it. These are his own words. Reporter but its not all about trump. Christie is also running as a more traditional republican, including on foreign policy. And on friday he was in kyiv to underscore his support for ukraine and to meet with president zelenskyy. Christies other positions are a smores boring of gop standards, though he doesnt lean in to the churl war. Even as he makes inroads, he knows he is a long shot. So you bought the paper this morning. You drove here by yourself. Are you okay being an underdog . Oh, yeah. In every good race i ever ran, i have been an underdog. I feel like i am on underdog on a mission. Reporter that mission for now is taking on donald trump. His way. I oppose him for his incompetence. I oppose him for his broken promises. Before we ever get to any of the criminal indictments. Reporter whats the truth on trump . He is a completely selfcentered, selfpossessed, selfconsumed, angry old man. He doesnt care about anybody else other than him. If he were to become president again, ill take him at his word, he said, i am your retribution. Well, he is not our retribution, bob. He will be his own retribution. Reporter why is everyone else in the field avoiding trump, tiptoeing around him . They are either unwilling to do it because they have aspirations, maybe a Vice President ial bid, trump cabinet. Some are unable. If you want to beat the man, youve got to be the man. Reporter a lot of voters might wonder would christie come back to trumps inner circle . No. No. Not a chance. Reporter 100 no chance . 100 no chance. Reporter because you have moved around a bit. 100 no chance, bob. Take it to the bank. Dad, wewe got this. S. We g got this. We got t this. Wewe got this. S. Seth doane has sent us a postcard from lombardy. A nice day for boating. Fantastico. There is nothing like it. Reporter this wooden 1970 aquarama is not for sale. This is one piece of cedar from lebanon. Reporter you would never know that from how Alberto Galassi speaks. A single piece of mow hog any. Reporter his enthusiasm for this boat, a riva, wow, it has everything, started long before he ran Ferretti Group which now owns the brand. Do you always go boating in a suit . She us out on italys lake iseo, racing past rivas factory as perhaps only the ceo could. You wanted not just a boat. You wanted a riva . First of all, a boat is a riva. Reporter there is no other sort of boat . No. Lets be honest. When you say i have a ferrari, Everybody Knows what a ferrari is. A riva is beyond boating. Its a myth. In the hands of royals, movie stars, rock stars, shieks, kings, tie auto coops. Reporter rivas aquarama debuted in 1962 during the glamorous la dolce vita years of italys postwar boom. Stars, including sophia loren, Brigitte Bardot and lelizabeth taylor owned rivas. And the boat itself plays a supporting role in dozens of films. Dont shoot reporter and talk about advertising. Riva was featured in portofino last year, shuttling guests at the latest kardashian wedding. They are the new sophia loren. They talk to the new generation. Why not . Times are changing. Reporter and times have changed for the company. While these wooden classic may be the spirit of riva, the real money today is in super yachts, which galassi says account for around 70 of riva sales. How do you keep the sense of what made you famous in that supersize . The style, its a very difficult job. Reporter some of those original Design Choices are still echoed decades later in this model. Its a limited Edition Tribute to the aquarama, which riva stopped producing in 1996, spawning a new business, maintenance. The costly process of keeping them up. This dates back to 1963. Reporter Richard Freebody showed us this riva, dry docked for a tuneup at his boat yard on the thames near london. What is different about a riva from another wooden boat . That feeling of the 60s and the glamour attached. It is the design that was sort of the equivalent of lovely cadillac on te water. Reporter his Company Makes its own wooden boats. They are beautiful. Reporter these are electric, but still have some more traditional details and extras. This is our famous picnic draw, which is becoming quite a musthave. Reporter everything you need for a picnic. Even a cake knife for those afternoon teas by the river. Reporter very english. Back in italy, we saw some of that same attention to detail. Sanding wood for the anniversario, which will get 20 coats of varnish. How do you feel working on a riva . Its beautiful because this is the spirit of the wood, he told us. You can feel it. Alberto galassi is working to keep rivas spirit alive, though he says they will never make an aquarama again, saying it would be a sin to try. Its a masterpiece. In italy, we are obsessed, i would say, with beauty. Sometimes i say that we are condemned to beauty. Reporter condemned . We live around beauty. We are surrounded by beauty. Somebody is not beautiful, it gives you a shock. So we cant live without. Reporter sadly, most of us will have to live without a riva. This one, nearly 50 years old, has gone up in value to roughly threequarters of a million dollars. But for a few minutes, it was still pretty sweet to get a taste of the dolce riva. Doc, im from the future. I came here in a time machine that you invented. Now, i need your help to get back to the year 1985. Its sunday morning on cbs and here again is jane pauley. Zoo thats michael j. Fox in his career defining role in the movie back to the future. Who could have imagined what the future held for him . This past spring, we sat down to reminisce. Our conversation is one of our sunday best. Do you remember the first time you were in new york city . I came to see you. I came to see you to do the today show. Promoting a new show. And i introduced a new name in hollywood. Michael fox. Reporter what do you do if you are children of the 60s and your oldest son makes william buxley look like fdr . Michael j. Fox plays a son on the Nbc Television series family ties. You dont subscribe to the wall street journal in real life . Not yet. I have to be careful i am not holding it upside down. Me and my friend who came with me to new york wandered down fifth and had breakfast for 20. I lost my [ bleep ]. 20 . Reporter what you remember is breakfast . And i remember meeting you. Congratulations. Reporter on the cusp of a very Bright Future people in every state in the union at that protest. What were you protesting . Good grooming . Reporter family ties debuted 40 years ago. Well, how do i look . Middleaged. Reporter after the first show with a live audience, did you know you were the star . I knew it landed. Reporter he knew he had found something, and this was the moment he found it. The name of his character was alex keaton, until he takes the phone. Alex p. Keaton here. This ad lib thing. Hello, this is alex keaton. I said, this is alex p. Keaton, and a big part of the character. Reporter is pete funny . He is funny. He is pro bowl. Progressive p. Reporter parkinsons, not funny. An incurable degenerative disease. But for years michael j. Fox has been getting a laugh. Parkinsons is a gift. A gift that keeps on taking. Reporter every time i see you, i can see its taken a little bit more of something. 30 plus years. There is not many of us that had the disease for 30 years. Reporter half his life. It sucks. It sucks having parkinsons. Reporter as millions know too well. Its a nightmare. Its a living hell. You have to deal with realities beyond most peoples understanding. Reporter fox is first to say he has advantages. My life is set up so i can pack parkinsons along with me if i have to. Reporter at some point parkinsons is going to make the call for you, isnt it . Yeah, its been banging on the door. I dont know why. Its getting tougher every day. Every day is tougher. But thats the way it is. I mean, who do i see about that . Reporter even talking comes at a price. I can make myself still, but i wont be as animated. Reporter show me what happens if you make yourself still. As he showed us six years ago we are not talking. I cant talk. I have to move. Reporter more now than tremors and slurred speech, muscle rigidity, the exhausting jerks and twists, its been falls and broken bones. Spinal surgery. I had a tumor on my spine. It was benign, but messed up my walking. Then i started to break stuff. Broke this arm. I broke this arm. I broke this elbow. I broke my face. I broke my hand. Reporter falling on things . Falling, which is a big killer with parkinsons. Its falling. And aspirating food, and pneumonia. All these subtle ways that get you. You dont die from parkinsons. You die with parkinsons. I am not going be 80. Reporter he does think about mortality, but at 61 he savors his past. Tv room, and i look at the back to the future, and i hadnt seen it. Since 1987, i hadnt seen it. Reporter as he recalls, tracy pollan, his wife of 35 years, had been waiting for him. Sat on the sofa, and she goes, what are you doing . Where are you . And i said, back to the futures on. She said, you are watching back to the future . I said, yeah, im really good in this. Reporter in the summer of 1985, michael j. Fox was the hottest name in hollywood with not only a number one movie, but a number two, and a top tv show. 20 to 30 of the tv viewing audience was watching you. Thats not true now. Walking in the hallway, every room is family ties. He was massive. Reporter how did you handle that fame . I pigged out on it. I loved it. Mike is a genuinely great guy. Reporter in recognition of his foundation work, old friend Woody Harrelson presented fox with an honorary oscar last year. We did some damage. We did some damage in the 80s. Reporter you say we did some damage . Yeah. Reporter is it possible you did some damage . Yeah, very possible. I mean, there is so many ways that you can that i could have hurt myself. I could have hit my head. I could have drank too much at a certain developmental period. Most likely, i think i was exposed to some kind of chemical. What we say is that genetics loads the gun and the environment pulls the trigger. Reporter in 23 years, the michael j. Fox foundation raised 1. 5 billion for research. Announcing a breakthrough recently, identifying a genetic biomarker for parkinsons, which could allow earlier diagnosis and treatment. This is it changes everything. Where we are right now, in five years, it will be able to tell if they have it. Able able to tell if they will get it, and how to treat it. Id rather you dont fall over. Im working on it. My kids are great. I love being with my family. You could put a little bit of this in there. Reporter his family all appear in a documentary about fox. The story of me, take two. Reporter his life what does it mean to be still . I wouldnt know. Reporter his career. Wait a minute, doc. Are you telling me that you brought the time opinion . Reporter and, of course, parkinsons. Its called still. What does still imply, evoke . I can never be still. Reporter and it has other means. Still here. Still committed. I take them all. Reporter and we see it all. Losing his footing. Okay. Thank you. Reporter but not his dignity or his sense of humor. Nice to meet you, sir. Nice to meet you. You knocked me off my feet. Reporter you come in with the punchline. You knocked me off tmy feet. Reporter you got the laugh. I got the laugh. Always in it for the laugh. Reporter michael j. Fox is a serious person. Funny, but wise. There never been a time in your life that wasnt amazing. Pretty good life. Reporter its perverse to say it, its kind of a charm life. Thats the point. I recognize how hard it is for people and how hard it is for me, but i have a certain set of skills that allow me to deal with this stuff. With gratitude, optimism is sustainable. The continuing war in ukraine is now responsible for creating the largest minefield in the world. Thats according to ukraines prime minister. The russian mines have killed or injured inuntold numbers. David martin shows us what it will take for ukrainians to break through those mine fields. Reporter this is what it takes to blast a path through a minefield. A monster of a vehicle, part tank, part bulldozer, fires a rocket attached to a cord of explosives. That detonation, in turn, detonates the mines that are in the minefield. Reporter Lieutenant Colonel latoya manzeys engineer battalion at fort carson, colorado, is training to clear a path wide enough for a column of tanks to pass through and attack enemy lines. Breach is probably one of the toughest things that we do. Reporter how wide a lane does it clear . Its about the width of an m1 tank. Reporter that doesnt leave a lot of margin of error for a tank going through there. No, it does not. Reporter the same equipment and tactics these troops are using have been provided to ukraine. To breechl the industrial strength mine fields laid by russia. Its industrial. It is deliberate and planned with a specific outcome in mind. That outcome is the denial of large amounts of ukrainian land. Reporter mike newton works with the halo trust, which has already begun clearing minefields the russians left behind when they treated from territory they occupied earlier in the war. Occupied for a significant amount of time, allowed Russian Military engineers to lay interference. It consists of hundreds of thousands antivehicle mines. Reporter spread that on the entire front in eastern and southern ukraine and the numbers are staggering. We are talking about millions of landmines spread across over 1,000 kilometers. Reporter retired general ben hodges, former commander of the u. S. Army in europe. Not just one line of mines on top of the ground. It could be two, 300, 400 meters deep and with a high density of mines. Reporter how important is breaching these minefields to the success or failure of the ukrainian counteroffensive . Its essential. Until you get through that, you never have a chance to really break through russian defenses and get to your real task, which is, of course, isolation and destruction of russian forces. Reporter of all the battlefield tasks, how would you rate getting through a minefield . Getting through any minefield or obstacle is extremely dangerous because you are so exposed. Reporter the training at fort carson begins with suppressive fire to make the enemy keep his head down and smoke to hide what happens next. The armored breaching vehicle rumbles to the edge of the minefield, protected by two bradley infantry fighting vehicles. Time is a big deal. So we get in and out as fast as we can richltz 25yearold Sergeant Jasmine luna commands the vehicle, which carries a rocket attached to a 17 r5yard long cord coiled like a snake and packed with explosives. It carries 100 meters worth of explosives. Reporter how many pounds . Over 2,000 pounds. Reporter she fires the rocket and it carries the cord out over the minefield. After she detonates the cord to set off the mines, she has to drive that plow into the minefield in case she missed any. Its supposed to push out the mines, creating a path for us to get through, and get the maneuvering force safely through right behind us. Reporter soldiers push in behind her to mark the left and right boundaries. Path she has cleared. In in exercise, they opened a single lane 100 yards long. Go, go reporter what happens if there is a minefield thats more than 100 yards . You shoot once and then shoot again. Reporter on the front lines in ukraine, rockets and their detonating cords are already arcing over the battlefield. But the path to victory remains blocked by russian mines. Editor of a book on the presidency of donald j. Trump. Thank you very much. This is a very sad day for america. The new indictment of former President Donald Trump constitutes an historic turning point. This promises to be the most important criminal trial in american history. Under special counsel jack smith, the department of justice has boldly declared that accountability is essential to our democracy. It charged trump with four counts much attempting to overturn the 2020 election. Trumps actions threatened the peaceful transfer of power, a process that separates you us from nondemocratic countries. Through a concerted effort that culminated with a violent mob storming capitol hill, trump rejected the integral norm undergirding a stable democratic system, namely, that losers must accept legitimate defeat. Even president richard nixon, who resigned in disgrace as a result of the watergate scandal, understood this to be true. Wth this indictment, the department of justice has broken with the controversial precedent established by president gerald ford in 1974 when he pardoned nixon for any crimes that he might have committed. The impeachment process offered the possibility of Holding Nixon accountable. Ford let the opportunity pass by. After almost a decade of americans fighting over race war in watergate, ford concluded it was more important to heal the nation by pardoning nixon than allowing a lengthy legal trial to proceed. Looking directly into the cameras, ford warned americans if a trial took place ugly passions would again be aroused and our people would again be polarized in their opinions. And the credibility of our free institutions of government would again be challenged at home and abroad. But the pardon did not heal the nation. We grew more divided. Many furious americans claimed that ford had been part of a corrupt deal when ford traveled to north carolina, he arrived to see placards that asked, is nixon above the law . His Approval Ratings plummeted. More pertinent, ford entrench add damaging norm that became a part of our nostalgia, pushing leaders away from taking legal action against elected officials who abuse their power. President s have continued to feel imperial. Trump tested fords proposition more than any president since nixon, and bidens department of justice has responded that ford was wrong. We must preserve key guardrails that prevent the abuse of president ial power if our leaders violate sacrosanct democratic principles, they will be held accountable regardless of the political fallout.
