The night vision goggles, you go from about 200 degrees of peripheral vision now looking through 40degree field of view. Today berman is showing me how he trains pilots by first using a flight simulator. He says learning to fly at night even for experienced pilots can take time. Theres different subconscious movements that you have to acquire when flying on night vision. Before this program cal fire was never able to fight fires aerially at night. Thats because the helicopters they had before the fire hawks were much smaller and didnt have as many safety features. Berman says to think of the difference between the old helicopters and these new ones like you would the difference between an old used car and a brandnew ferrari. Its capable of carrying 1,000 gallons of water where the huey is onethird of that. Its also dual engine. Cal fire believes these new helicopters will be a huge tool in fighting large, dangerous wildfires. Being able to continue to attack the fire at night offers a slew of advantages. The temperature is usually cooler. The wind is slower and the humidity higher. All those major components of fire are to our advantage at night based off of those environmental conditions. The first night flights launched last year, but cal fire plans to really ramp them up as we head towards what is typically the peak of fire season this year. Officials believe these night flights will be critical in saving both homes and lives. Berman himself has already been on some of the flights and told me he cant wait to hop on even more. The helicopters were used on a limited basis last year. Theyll be used much more frequently moving forward, but one obstacle now is not all pilots are trained to fly at night. Cal fire is trying to get them up to speed. Wells fargo is dealing with a tech issue thats causing some customers to report missing direct deposits from their bank accounts. In the nations capital, a new push to recognize farmworkers for their extraordinary contributions to this country thanks to the efforts of a teen from salinas. This week a new resolution to designate march 25th through march 31st is to be National Farmworkers week. Melissa zavala helped inspire its framework and it all started through a school project. They need more representations in schools being acknowledged as careers rather than just general labor, as most call it. Her parents are both farmworkers. She was one of 13 finalists invited to washington, d. C. To talk about those issues and more. Yesterday the mayor of salinas thanked melissa for her work. I hereby thank Melissa Savala for bringing National Awareness for our hard working farmworkers and for being a leader and inspiration within the city of salinas community. Get out a little aggression and also, you know, my favorite thing about fight movies is that the underdog, no matter how hard they work, if they work hard enough, they get their chance to be at the top, too, and i feel like thats the heart of what this fight is about. Com well, the temperature of the worlds oceans soared to their highest level ever this week. The average surface temperature reached nearly 70 degrees fahrenheit at the end of july beating a record last set in 2016. Scientists say it wont cool anytime soon. Peoples perspective is that the ocean is so big, its so vast that it can buffer nearly anything that humanity can throw at it and the reality is thats not the case. Oceanographers say this paints an alarming picture for the health of the oceans, especially coral reefs. Temperatures warmed up inland, mostly 80s, 90 degrees in concord and theres our typical august temperature spread, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and low 90s. Well add some triple digits to the forecast more likely on sunday for inland parts of the bay area. The fog spreads pretty far inland heading into tonight. Once the sun comes up its going to dissipate quickly. Well see abundance sunshine as we head from late morning through the rest of the day. Temperatures tonight drop down into the mid to upper 50s to around 60 degrees. Highs tomorrow are going to be a few degrees above average around the bay, several degrees above average inland, a mix of 80s and 90s for inland parts of the bay area, 60s and 70s along the bay, just above 60 degrees along the coast. The peak in temperatures sunday isnt that much of a peak around the bay, low 70s in the city, close to 80 in oakland. Everybody cools off next week. Inland spots heat up to a greater extent, close to 90 for san jose sunday. Some spots tomorrow, more likely sunday and monday and then back to the upper 70s and low 80s tuesday through friday and inland parts of the east bay, a threeday stretch of hotter temperatures with the hottest readings sunday topping 100 degrees. Head for the coast. Everybody along the coast loves it when they say that because they love the crowds flocking away from the heat, temperatures low to mid60s along the coast this weekend.
