San pablo this morning. Where crews hazmat crews are set to be back on scene. Im justin andrews, the latest coming up next. And i hope you enjoyed the Cool Temperatures the past couple of days because heading into the weekend a heat dome is beginning to build its way into the inland areas. More on this coming up. Unfortunately we have reports of another freeway shooting this one on i80 and lanes are back open after they were closed for the investigation. Were still seeing slow speeds in the area and we have the details coming right up. All right, but first, lets open up the windows, this is our view from our rooftop heren battery street looking at the beautiful and twinkling bay bridge. We wish you a good friday morning. So how is your weekend going to play out . A check on weather and together beginning with jessica birch. We understand a mixed bag. It is and i mean you were talking about the drive in . Morning. Fogust. It is in full force here in the bay area. Lets start off with live look actually. This is the live look before you head over there to marin. Visibility not the best right now. I mean its still you are still able to get across the bridge temperatures are still pretty chilly in the upper 50s throughout most of the bay area. In santa rosa visibility actually sitting at 53 degrees were also less than a mile visibility just to the surface level. So take it slow. Anywhere from petaluma stretching north into santa rosa even all the way down along our coastline near halfmoon bay. Trouble spots this morning and later in this afternoon well see the marine layer lift and break apart just like yesterday. But along our coast this afternoon, were sitting in the 60s. Upper 60s along the bay and were starting to warm right back up into the inland areas. Plenty of sunshine this afternoon. As High Pressure builds its way in. Were going to sit in the 80s and even some 90s off in the east inland hills. Heres a live look down in Santa Clara Valley. That marine layer lot higher and were seeing the clouds kind of just floating over us right now. Down to the southwest, they have been dealing with recordbreaking heat i mean just within the month of july alone. And were still seeing triple digits from phoenix over into las vegas. Why do we bring that up . The heat dome thats really impacting them. About to stretch over us too here in the bay area and where we feel it the most it will be the inland areas of course. So the temperatures that we see right now, for example, the 80s and even some 90s off in the east inland hills, quickly warm up into triple digits just for concord alone. Were going quickly cool right back down into the 80s as we head into next week. We have some big changes like a roller coaster coming up right around the corner and ill break that apart coming up in the first alert forecast. Jocelyn . Thank you jess. Like we said earlier unfortunately we have reports of another freeway shooting on i80 near Central Avenue going eastbound on i80 earlier this mortgage. The shooting had all lanes shut down for the investigation. In just the last hour, or so, all lanes have opened. We are still seeing some slow speeds and around that area, but be aware of that. We have a traffic alert. This is on 280 northbound Caesar Chavez street. The on ramp exit ramp is blocked and this is because of a crash. This is northbound on cesar chavez street. More details in our next traffic report. All right, thank you so much. You know jocelyn just mentioned shootings on the bay area freeways is really become a serious concern for thousands of you where you live. You know, many of you write to us asking about the fate of little boy who was recently caught in the middle of latest rolling gun battle on the oakland freeway. This morning, we have got a glimpse into his road to recovery directly from his family. So heres what we know. We know his name. We know his age. His family calls him asa. Hes 8 years old and because of a shooters actions, this child has a bullet and bone fragments lodged in his neck, he is paralyzed below the neck. On a fundraising website their son needs a respirator to survive and needs around the clock care and its going to be expensive for that family. But weve also learned there are Bright Moments ahead as well. Asa can read and this morning we understand he is able to communicate. It is though going to be a tough road. Look at this beautiful child herement 8 years old and took a bullet. Now his life changed forever. The family faces many costs to care for him. In fact, some estimates in the seven figure range just this year alone. This ild, this family, innocent and yet another freeway shooting a problem in our communities. You remember lah he was with his mother on 580 near grand avenue caught betweenshooters intwo cars just firingback d forth. Last word from nobody arrested and nobody caught and suspect vehicles got away and theyre still out there somewhere. We know the story is important to you in the community so well continue to follow up with he and his family and we wish them strength today. In the south bay this morning. Where we know it was a scary night for many of you. Look at this. A wildfire in East San Jose inched very close to many homes out there. But new this morning, fire crews are ill out there workg to put out hotspots and it contained. Lets look at the map to sort of give you an idea of where this hd. Iballooned to more than dole0 acres in the first hour. I brought it to you breaking news at 3 00 yesterday. This is burning near the clayton road in alum rock. The way it was spreading, it did make me nervous about the houses that were back there. I have seen it jump the canyon before. So its it was pretty scary. My mom lives up there. And shes elderly. So i was worried about her. And so i was driving up the road and i saw the first we saw the smoke and then we saw the fire and i was worried about the horses that were right next to it. So Community Member out there making sure her mothers okay and the animals are okay. Thats what we do in the bay area, we reach out and we respond. Update this morning. Cal fire says that fires 30 contained and they still though dont know what caused it. But it is for sure going to be another long day for firefighters doing battle in uphill and very hot conditions throughout the day. If you see firefighter say thank you. To san pablo now. Those of you forced from your homes we understand can now go home. The crews watched the teams removing hundreds of boxes of chemicals all from a backyard shed over on stanton avenue. Justin andrews is live on the scene this morning and justin, chemicals inside a storage unit. Where did they all come from . Whats the back story here . Reporter well, the back story is those chemicals were found inside of that shed in this home belonged to a chemist. A former chemist and he potentially according to investigators he died about six months ago. But let me walk you through what we know so far this morning. Reid, we do know that these hazmat teams are expected to be out here again this morning. We dont know exactly what time but keep in mind this doesnt have the impact that it did on yesterday. Only five homes are evacuated like you mentioned everybody else were allowed to come back into their homes. So heres the details we know so far. At least at this 5 00 hour. The crews plan to bring the five families back at some point today. But it has been a methodical and lengthy cleanup for contra costa fire on wednesday. They found more than 600 different chemicals and removed more than 800 bottles of Hazardous Materials from the property. The process had to be done carefully though as crews had to not only remove those chemicals, but they had to test the chemicals and then properly dispose of them. So this was a lengthy process. The shed filled with the hazardous chemicals and materials belonged to a retired chemistry teacher who died roughly six months ago. The brother of the chemist found it all when he was cleaning out that property just days ago. Ranging from explosives to regular chemicals to acids, to oxidizers and flammable liquids. At this point, most of that is being has been contained and has been stabilized and has been transported off site from the residence to a facility where it will be disposed. Reporter all right, so firefighters say those chemicals had been improperly stored in the shed for years. And that forced them to be unstable. Back over to you. All right, justin. Thank you. Best wishes for the families still out of their homes this morning. Glad that they can get back in. Thank you so much. All right when you look at whats happening, this is a persecution of a political opponent. This was never supposed to happen in america. Do you want trials he is facing yet another indictment and that is donald trump walking away going up on to a plane as he continues to beat the drum the cases against him are political. This morning, he wants that january 6th case moved out of washington, d. C. Mr. Trump told the judge yesterday hes not guilty in the charges that he plotted to overturn the 2020 election results. So think about this this morning. Donald trump is the clear frontrunner for the republican nomination for president while at the same time, he faces 78 criminal charges in now throe cases. And all the while, he has been adamant that the 2020 election was stolen. Now contrast that with what happened yesterday once again, donald trump getting out of a large suv and going into a courtroom facing a judge. Then booked and fingerprinted before entering that courtroom. Well, once again, no mug shot taken and once again, movement plea in yet another case. Prosecutors allege a criminal conspiracy to hold on to power spreading lies of a stolen election, culminating in the deadly attack on our nations capitol. This morning we have a little glimpse into what the Trump Defense will be in the case. Trumps lawyer argues his client has a First Amendment right to express his feelings. Well, President Trump did is he said go patriotically and peacefully and protest. Thats an american right. That is why we are america. Earlier in the sound byte, she admitted that her client lost the election. Meanwhile, congresswoman lofgren said this. Theres ample evidence to prove that the then had the president knew that hed lost. Ill say also i mean, he lied to members of congress and the senate. So weve got complete coverage on the indictment of former President Donald Trump on kpix. Com. Where you can read the full 45 page indictment just like jack smith urged all americans to do. Read it. Look it up. Decide for yourself. You can also look up the special counsels full comments on this case. And find more information about mr. Trumps other indictments and other criminal cases in our next half hour, well take you live to washington, d. C. For details on what happened inside and outside the federal courtroom and what comes next. We cant keep talking about this. We need action. And we need it now. Trials for the tenderloin as the call for help amps up from those who live there. Well take you there. Plus hey kitty kitty. Big one at that. Where in the bay this friday feline was spotted . And thos on the bay area beat this morning, watching news out of the tenderloin where many of you who live there are getting vocal in the push to reclaim your neighborhood. So we know lot of you are out there pushing for safety for your families. And for your children. Well, we were there when you were there last night as you made the case for that and in fact look at this, this is a packed town hall with da Brooke Jenkins talking to many people there. Lot of them expressing frustration saying you are fed up and demanding action of the police. As Andrea Nakano is about to show you, even though arrests are up in the tenderloin. Here it is. We in the tenderloin want children to be able to walk, bike, play. Reporter josie chant is a long time tenderloin resident. I see beauty and i see struggle. Reporter she has hoped that the streets of the tenderloin will one day be a place where families can feel safe raising their kids again. Im in recovery meaning sober for the last five years. Reporter in the town hall meeting, there was no disagreement on how the drugs and violence have taken over the streets. The question is, how to fix the problem. Since late may, there has been extra enforcement with the state and federal government sending chp and federal officers to work with sfpd if the sheriffs department. The arrest rates are through the roof. Particularly for narcotic dealings. We have we received over 1,000 cases submit today our office from the Police Department during my first year in office. That is almost double what we received the year before. Reporter while the arrests are up, District Attorney jenkins highlighted a problem in prosecuting the criminals. Im going to step right on into this one that the courts are the biggest barrier right now. Reporter one of the first steps she took was to try to keep dealers behind bars during the legal process. She claims the judges are not taking this issue seriously. We filed over 100 detention motions for either repeat and chronic drug dealers and people who have one, two, three, four, five open drug dealing cases. Or people who have egregious amounts of drugs in their possession when theyre arrested. Only 16 of those motions have been granted. Reporter and its not just drug dealers that are getting arrested. Police chief bill scott says open use is no longer being tolerated. What we hope to get from this is number one, is to change the narrative that people can just show up on the streets of San Francisco and do whatever they please. And nobody is going to say anything or do anything. That day has to end and it has ended. Reporter there was some disagreement from the community about going after drug addicts. That offering them treatment was a better longterm solution. Jenkins says the key is to have both enforcements and treatment. We have a job to do and simple as going out and saying hey you know you seem to beaddicted. Would you like treatment . We wouldnt have a problem. Reporter trial there may be a difference in opinion in how to improve the conditions in the tenderloin, most residents are just hoping for some kind of change soon. Its about getting to solutions, to make that possible. We cant keep talking about this. We need action. And we need it now. So lets talk about the solutions. Tweet us kpix 5 and hear what you think. Covering the north bay this morning. Several sights of Mountain Lion. It happened early thursday morning in petaluma. Police say one of these was spotted around midnight on mccould boulevard at a kohls parking lot. Then six hours later someone caught this video of a lion walking right across thedriveway just easy breezy on a thursday. This was over on myrtle avenue about five miles from the parking lot in petaluma where the other one was spotted. For those of you wondering if there was more than one. Police have zoomed in on the video and they think this is the same Mountain Lion getting its steps in. Keep an eye on the pets if they are outside. Which they might be lets get a check of weather and together. Lets start with first alert meteorologist jessica birch. You know, if you want to take your pets outside by all means just keep them on a leash. This weekend though its going to warm up fast off in the east bay. You are going to want to wait until the late evening hours or Early Morning hours to really get that long walk in with the pups. Heres the reason why. Weather going to be seeing triple digits around the corner as a heat dome builds its way into the bay area. Were actually starting off with a live look this morning just from our Black Mountain cam. Things are nice and cool down in the Santa Clara Valley right now. Were pretty much all sitting in the 50s handinhand this morning. So no matter which direction you are heading to work, or to school, thats what were dealing with nice and chilly conditions right now but heres this afternoon. Low visibility which is currently immaxing santa rosa all the way over into petaluma and start dissipating. Just sits along the coastline kind of hugging the peninsula. In the afternoon hours, were going to see cloudy skies along the coast and sunnier conditions virtually everywhere else in the bay area but that onshore flow will still impact our coastline. So im talking to you guys along pacifica and talking to you guys in Stinson Beach this morning as we wake up and head into this afternoon, especially up near bodega bay. Wind gusts anywhere up to around 40 Miles Per Hour in the dinner time hours tonight. Daytime highs today starting to warm up. Yesterday we were below average. Today, were starting to see a little bit of a contac and everyone is doing their own thing in the microclimbs today. Warming back up in the 90s in the east inland hills and still 60s along the coast. That puts us below average along the coastline but a little bit above average in the east inland hills. Even in the Santa Clara Valley were also seeing a little bet of the a different setup. That low elevation valley still sitting about fur degrees below average. So what does that mean for us . I mentioned it earlier, but were going to start seeing this heat wave build it way in. Triple digits right around the corner for us just by sunday for our east inland hills. Then we cool right back down to average into next week. That heat dome that is sitting down near las vegas, all throughout the four corners, its kind of starting to fluctuate and heres what we have just by our friday afternoon forecast today. Watch what happens as it stretches all the way into the saturday and kind of just gets a little bit bigger and bigger day by day and then sunday when it peaks that heat will slowly come into the bay area and thats the reason why no matter where you live were going to see a little bit of a temperature increase. I mean, 90s today, triple digits just by sunday and monday for inland east bay. Low 60s for now quickly turns into upper 60s for the coast. Some of us will notice it a lot more than others. Nice and cool along the coastline and San Francisco the warmest were going to get is sunday. 71 degrees which is still beautiful weather if you ask me. In the north bay, anyone heading up to wine country this weekend, expect 90s as early as sunday. Jocelyn . All right, thank you jess. Lets take a look at how things are looking for our supercommuters. Its already a busy ride you are looking about 19mile an hour speeds there and about 30 minute drive from 205 over to 680. This is what we have been talking about this morning. Unfortunately, we are getting reports of another freeway shooting. This one happened on i80 going eastbound. All lanes are open now. This is after they were closed due to the investigation. This is in albany near Central Avenue. Fortunate part and thankfully no injuries have been reported with this shooting. But of course we will continue to update you as we get those there. We are still seeing some slow speeds in and around that area so if you are head in that direction just be aware. Over bay bridge the metering lights are still off. Sevenmy drive from the maze over to the city. All right, time now 5 21. In the morning, good morning to you. Former President Donald Trump arraigned in federal court. Pleading not guilty to conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Then leading to the violent riot on our nations capitol. Now of the three criminal indictments trump is facing right now, this one we understand may be the most significant. Nicole dantonio join us live there washington, d. C. Why is this one seen as the most significant, first of all . Reporter well, because itrevolves around so many different things. This is months and months and months and years of investigation to lead up to this indictment. So when the former president was here in washington, d. C. He was here for only three hours from the time that the plane touched down until it left. But this morning, the focus really shifts to what comes next. Theres going to be another hearing at the end of the month. And thats where the trial could set a date for a future trial. Former President Trump is back at his new Jersey Golf Club after a third historic arraignment in a washington courtroom thursday. Trump answered a not guilty plea to four federal charges accusing him of trying to overturn the 2020 election results. In the latest case, brought by special counsel jack smith. When you look at whats happening, this is a persecution of a political opponent. Reporter cameras were not allowed in the courtroom as the former president appeared before a magistrate judge. The defense and prosecutors agreed to allow trumps release pending trial. Under the conditions that he cannot violate federal law and must appear as required. He is also not allowed to communicate about the facts of the case to anyone he knows to be a witness. Except through lawyers. Trump is not required to attend the next hearing which is scheduled for august 28th. At that time, the judge could set a trial date. Special counsel has said he wants a speedy trial. [ chanting ] demonstrators gathered outside the courthouse as the events unfolded. I believe that President Trump is completely innocent of all the charges. Be held accountable. Reporter the former president also faces state charges in new york as well as more federal charges in florida and a special counsels classified documents probe. A charging decision is expected soon in fulton county, georgia. In their investigation into efforts to overturn the election results. Now several democrats in the house are pushing for this trial to be televised live. Cameras are not generally allowed in federal courtrooms. But there are several dozen democrats in the house that say because of the historic nature of this case, they say transparency is really crucial here. Transparency and timing as well. This is the former president s third indictment. Lets talk about the timeline here. What do we face . We know prosecutors want a speedy trial. The defense says they want to push it back as far as possible. Reporter yeah, were getting the back and forth. Right . What we do no know at the end of the month, thats the next update here, there will be a hearing on august 28th. And at that hearing, that is when the judge could potentially set a trial date. So we have a little bit you know we could hear more of timeline by the end of the month but as you said were getting the back and forth. We know the special counsel jack smith has been very vocal. On the other side Donald Trumps defense team has said thats in the going to happen. Theres no way. And they are looking to delay this until after the 2024 election. Nicole, thank you so much. That update from our Nations Capital this morning. A live look now outside right now on this beautiful friday morning. Our camera from the top of beautiful mount diablo and s where it . Black mountain. Okay. Pa koa is going to get me trained here in studio. This is the Black Mountain camera everybody. Mount diablo would be a good idea if it were the mount diablo camera. What is is a good idea . First alert meteorologist jessica birch, he has to get me trained. He runs the show. You are fine, i use the live cameras all the time for the forecasting alone and between mount diablo and Black Mountain, always a hard one with the sunrise. Just the better one between the two. Lets take a live look outside right now this morning. Down in the Santa Clara Valley. Just all throughout san jose right now were seeing some high clouds pull its way back along the coast and cool sort this morning. All pretty much handinhand right now with the cool chilly temperatures. Later into this afternoon, were going to stay in the chilly temperatures along our coastline but we do warm up a lot into the east inland hills. Lots of sunshine stretching anywhere from napa down the into the east bay and all the way down into the Santa Clara Valley. With nice warmth for us this afternoon and even warmer temperatures as we head into the weekend. Lets take it a step back though because we just saw two live looks and mostly down into the Santa Clara Valley. Where theyre not dealing with pretty much any cloud coverage or any visibility issues. But we have some trouble spots this morning. Santa rosa, all the way down into petaluma. Denser fog and especially along our coastline. Very similar trend. So just take it slow this morning. We have some pockets of decent visibility and not so decent visibility later this afternoon well continue to see the clouds really floating along the peninsula. Two things i want to mention. One today were right back down to average. When it comes to our temperatures. Weather starting to warm up a little bit more day by day. As that heat dome starts to stretch its way in. And that heat dome already has impacted so many people down to the southwest. I mean triple digits this afternoon for my hometown las vegas and 110 in palm springs and that heat stretches all the way up into redding even with triple digits up there. So are we going see any . Let me show you real fast. This weekend we have triple digits around the corner for our concord area and pretty much all throughout the east bay but then right as as we head into next week. Right back down to average. All right, thank you jess. Unfortunately the serious crash on 280 going southbound. This is near the west burro boulevard exit. Unfortunately one person has died in the crash. This is a rolled over vehicle. Expect delays in and around the area, chp is on scene there. Unfortunately, there was a freeway shooting earlier this morning. This was on i80 eastbound in the albany area. The lanes are now back open and they opened the last hour or so. Thankfully, no injuries reported in this shooting. This is also one we will update you as we get information on it. At the Altamont Pass for the supercommuters. 34 minute drive over at the bay bridge. Metering lights still off and seven minute drive from the toll plaza over to the city. Reid . Thank you so much. Your community station with an eye on oakland this morning. So we know the drum beat. By the naacp and other Community Groups to get the chp in the neighborhoods to help curb crime. Well now, theres indication that governor gavin newsom is responding and he is sending in the chp. You know, you have seen it almost daily. This video went viral. On social media. The people of oakland, you can hear that woman screaming. Theyre suffering under a recent string of highprofile carjackings or carjacking attempts a wave of other armed robberies. Will police get it under control thats the big question, our Jose Martinez in oakland with the story that shows not everyone is convinced about that. Reporter a corn shared by many oakland residents like bob jackson. The lights all let up. So the point of it every day, we have these kind of problems in the city of oakland. Crime is just out of hand. Reporter but this thursday, Bishop Jackson from the ax full Gospel Church is celebrating the california Highway Patrol will deploy more officers in oakland to fight against crime. What i hear from the people of the community is that the community is not safe. Not safe to live in oakland anymore. This is the buzz word thats going around everywhere. People that can are trying to move out of oakland. People that have bought into oakland are now sorry that they paid all the money for these houses. Because for Public Safety has to be number one. Im thankful now the focus is beginning to swing on Public Safety. Reporter the plan to send at least six chp officers and sergeant to oakland came. Chp says the officers will aid zest with side shows and highway violence and organized crime. But not everyone is on board like cat brooks founder of the antipolice terror project. Libby schaaf over her to terms brought in the california patrol three times. Two of the times were during the economic pandemic in the height of the pandemic when crime was at all time high. The last time chp was here than this time when they get here. So this is knee jerk reactionary i want to look like ill doing something policy. That unfortunately for oaklanders, that tragically unfortunately for oaklanders, is going to do nothing to keep us any safer. Reporter she says the real problem is not being addressed right now. What we said was there was surely to be an economic pandemic that came on the heels of the coronavirus pandemic. That the housing insecure were going to be homeless. The food insecure were going to become starking. Reporter she acknowledges theres a safety problem but more officers could actually affect black and brown communities. Whats more theres a rating for the levels of violence of Law Enforcement agencies in the state. Chp is in the top seven. Were talking about agency that is consistently in the news for abuses against the community. So we are committed to following this story for you and as you pursue solutions. And we know many of you are sounding off. In fact, our cameras were there for the heated meeting. In fact the lianoid stretched right down the street just week full of many of you in the montclair neighborhood. Concerned about crime and demanding answers. Well, this morning, were also drilling down on the numbers. Homicides across oakland are down but many other crimes including car thefts and burglary, they are up. Now if sending in the chp sounds like a familiar response by governor gavin newsom, you are right. Its not just oakland. You will remember at the beginning of may, Governor Newsom gave marching orders to chp officers and the California National guard to respond to the fentanyl crisis in San Franciscos tenderloin district. Weir watching that story as well. Time now 5 39. In the morning, lets go down south to hollywood where striking writers and studios, theyre going to meet later today. Trying to come to an agreement in the weeks long Writers Strike. Were watching that while we see the south land get ready and excited for taylor swift. We see you dancing out there. Maybe just tapping your feet. Its early. Get your coffee in and then dance. Taylor swift takes the eras tour to Southern California. Night two of the concert. Some thou ggood morning, everybody time now to watch the wallet. The money watch report. You know members of Writers Guild have agreed to meet with a Group RepresentingHollywood Studios today. Its the first sign of progress in the stalemate. Its not an official bargaining session. But it is the first time that the two sides have met since negotiations failed. The writers you can see and hear them. They joined on the picket lines by sagaftra members last month. Sagaftra of course the union that represents Entertainment Industry members and Union Members say throughout the strikes, theyre staying strong. Writers are out there striking and they say theyll continue. The writers, the actors, we didnt choose this path. But its the path that were on. And were an industry. We all have to Work Together and we know that at the end of the day. So its a good first step that this meeting is happening. So what do they want . Demand better minimum pay and a larger show of revenue from streaming shows and guarantees they wont be replaced altogether by artificial intelligence. Lets look at tech and money in the bay. And the Quarterly Report by apple. The companys profit increased 2 while revenue fell 1 in the third quarter. What cause mean . That marks the Third Straight year over year quarterly drop in revenue. Despite that revenue drop. Apples Financial Results are still a sign that the techs Biggest Companies may have found their footing a little bit following last years downturn. Were watching weather and traffic going into the weekend and we are learning that what happens in vegas doesnt necessarily stay in vegas. The heat dome. Do i have to pay a royalty for using that . I dont know but you know i was born and raised in las vegas and you lived many years in las vegas. And we left vegas. So we we can claim it. Get their heat. We have the rights and we do yes, getting the heat right around the corner. You know the heat dome . Its going to make its impact here in the bay area pretty shortly. Talk about that. All throughout the southwest i mean weve been talking about recordbreaking heat down in phoenix and weve been talking about triple digits just nonstop from palm springs ranging even into las vegas and that heat dome, its making its way towards us too. Today alone their forecasted numbers all sitting in the triple digits from barstow down to imperial and in the Sacramento Valley north up into redding. Back here in the bay though, were not getting that necessarily this afternoon. But it is coming right around the corner and upper 90s for us today and tomorrow and sunday, that heat dome stretches and we get the triple digits.
