Front lines of helping the homeless, but he says his church is being overwhelmed, and he is asking for help. Reporter reverend emmanuel is the reverend of the church of god in christ. He is a Community Leader and at one point he lost his home, forcing him into homelessness over a decade ago. Now, reverend dorn continues to serve his community, including at times when he feels underappreciated. People dont have any respect for the church anymore, and that really hurts me. Reporter here are some pictures the reverend shared with us, showing different individuals hopping the wall of the church and another person using a ladder to climb to the roof of the church to possibly use drugs. It is like nobody has any rules anymore nobody has any moral compass to not do stuff like that i caught a guy down here defecating reporter in the last two years, the problem has gotten worse. Got up there and took the bulb out so it would not come on. Finally got the camera. But you know, it is an ongoing problem, and when i saw the tent out here i was like okay, all of this starts with one tent. Reporter we reached out to dean preston who represents district 5 regarding this and in a statement he shared the following. Emmanuel church of god in christ is a Crucial Institution in our district. My office has been in contact with pastor dorn and city departments to ensure that the church gets needed support. What happens is the police, they come for a while, then, you know, it will be good, then they wont come and a couple months later you see people coming again. I think we need to get out of the mentality, too, of pointing fingers, because there is no limit to what can be accomplished if you dont worry about who gets credit. You know, we just need to find a need and fill it. Reporter the pastor says that despite the ongoing problem this will not stop him from his mission of serving the people and being a steward in the house of god. And the reverend is clear that he does not have a problem with his unhoused neighbors. It just becomes an issue once people are defiling a sacred place such as church. So lezla, i know that some people are struggling with addiction. I know that you have a personal story from someone in the Church Community who is grappled with addiction. Yes, so coming up tonight at 7 00 i will tell you the story of a church groundskeeper whose son is camped out near the church and in the past has struggled with addiction. All right, lezla, complicated issue and thanks for bringing it to us. We appreciate it. In another part of the city, a refuge for the homeless is holding a public town hall asking the chief for some serious help. We told you about Saint Anthonys in the tenderloin. They give out hot lunches to people who need them, but the ceo told us that volunteers and even some of the people they serve are afraid to go there and set foot in the neighborhood at all because of recent shootings and open drug dealing. The Police Station is two blocks appear. I cant picture how this could be allowed to happen. Reporter so all this is going until 7 30. The san jose mayor wants to keep students safe from theft, breakins and drug use that an eastside school. He says this is related to an uptick in rvs and lived in vehicles parked near campus, so he is proposing an ordinance to help with this which would prohibit encampments and vehicle dwelling within 150 feet of licensed preschools, day cares and k12 schools. Join me and my classmates in supporting this crucial, common sense legislation to ensure that the future varsity is prioritized by creating a fiscal environment for all of our schools in the city of san jose. So on the other side of the coin, san jose has been working to expand safe parking sites around the city where unhoused people can use bathrooms, have showers and get access to social services. Developing now down in the south bay, a wildfire has been burning very, very close to homes in the san jose foothills. You can see all of this with firefighters getting a handle on the flames. It is 20 contained now and is burning near clayton road and via the lavista, and firefighters are throwing a lot of resources added. Anne makovec has been following this. Anne, what do we know . Reporter firefighters have started to get a handle on the flames and they tweeted out that forward progress has stopped. That likely means that the 30 homes and other buildings that were listed as threatened are probably going to be okay. It started around 2 30 and in about an hour it went from 30 acres to 66 acres. The burn scar is coming right up to some peoples backyards. San jose fire posted the video of cal fire helicopters there siphoning water from Cunningham Lake to drop onto the fire. Dozens of firefighters have been attacking the fire from the ground and air and we have been seeing them drop fire and flame retardants and an arrow tanker has been circling the burn scar throughout the afternoon. We talked with one neighbor who said that she reported the fire when it was much smaller, and she was surprised at how quickly it spread. My mom lives there and she is elderly, so i was worried about her. So i was driving up the road and i saw this smoke and then we saw the fire. I was worried about the horses right next to it, so we decided we should call the fire department. Reporter still no word on the cause or when this is expected to be contained. All right, anne, thank you for keeping us posted. We have a new update on the hazmat situation that has been going on in san pablo for hours on end. Contra costa county fire says they hope to have people back in their homes within the next few hours. They are still trying to figure out the chemicals and products that forced evacuations yesterday. They say that hazmat crews should be done with this investigation and the cleanup tonight. They have been removing chemicals from the backyard shed on stanton avenue all day. Firefighters say the homeowner died six months ago and his brother found hundreds of chemicals in the backyard shed when he was cleaning out the property. Firefighters say the chemicals had been improperly stored for years in different containers and boxes. At this point most of it has been contained and stabilized and transported from the residence to a facility where will be disposed. The walnut creek bomb squad has been taking the lead in the investigation. People who had not evacuated were gathered at the gym at Contra Costa County community college. Some people in oakland are feeling like calls for immediate help have been heard. We first broke this news yesterday that Governor Newsom is sending more chp officers to help control crime, but as Jose Martinez found out, not everybody is convinced that that will do much good. This is what dana olson has to do every night to keep her business safe. Hopefully it is just a deterrent to windows getting smashed, which i have to pay for. And its expensive. And you know, getting the merchandise out, you know, it is just hard, right . You were just trying to make it a little bit harder. Reporter she is one of many Business Owners in oakland affected by the increasing crime rate. Her store has been broken into twice. I think there is a general feeling of not if i will be burglarized again, but when. That is what i paid to have the security get put in. I have put in additional cameras, and i am continuing to do everything that i can to secure my business as best i can. Reporter so the announcement that more california Highway Patrol officers will be deployed to fight against crime has raised some questions for her. In theory its a good idea, obviously. People being more presents is helpful, however i think what we have been trying to address is that we need the police to be working within our communities. We want Police Officers who live in oakland to work in oakland, because we want to see businesses, police, officials working together. Reporter the plan has divided the community. What i hear from people in the community is that the community is not safe. That it is not safe to live in oakland anymore. That is a buzzword that is going around everywhere. People who cannot trying to move out of oakland. People who bought into oakland are not sorry they paid all that money for these houses, because Public Safety has to be number one. So i am thankful now that the focus is beginning to swing on Public Safety. Reporter but others say that this is a bad idea, because it is not addressing the real issues. We said there was surely to be an economic pandemic that came on the heels of the coronavirus pandemic, that the housing insecure would become homeless, the food insecure would become starving, the job insecure would become jobless. Reporter Bishop Jackson says he understands these issues but the Public Safety needs to be addressed immediately. We pay big taxes in the city of oakland. We pay more taxes than the other five cities in alameda county, but it seems that we get less service when it comes down to Public Safety. They have a lot of programs, but when you have a 75yearold woman living in the oakland hills, not in the flatlands, and have a Home Invasion at her house at 2 a. M. And she has to get her. 357 magnum and start shooting at people that are kicking her door down to rob her, kill her, you dont know what they were going to do. And she is two doors over from a city councilman . You know what is crazy it is just unbelievable. Reporter dana says the city needs a more aggressive approach against crime, including paying more attention to issues that drive people to actually commit crimes. We need a lot and it will take steps and time and energy and care. And the city is also giving oakland 1 million loan to install license plate readaders foformer presesident trtrum pleadeded not guililty to four felonyny charges s relateted to janunuary 6th attack. Prosecuto say there was a sweeping scheme to overturn the results of the election. Both supporters and critics of former president gathered outside the courthouse during the 30 minute hearing. Mr. Trump was read his rights and the charges against him, including conspiracy to defraud the u. S. And conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding. Then he flew back to his new Jersey Golf Club where he addressed supporters and reporters. This is a very sad day for america. This is a persecution of a political opponent. This was never supposed to happen in america. That was the former president speaking to the press. When the case goes to trial, trumps lawyers plan to argue that his false claims about the election were not criminal in nature. The legal teams are expected back in court on august 28th. Cbs evening news with Norah Odonnell will have much more on the coverage of the arraignment at 6 30. In san jose, police say they have arrested a second man in connection with a violent robbery during a poker game. The game happened at a home on Ambrose Court on may 4th. 10 people were there playing poker when two armed men smashed in the sliding door and told them to get on the floor and give up the cash. Police said that they hit somebody in the head with a gun and then took off with over 30,000. Police say they tracked down the first suspect soon after with the help of a police k9 but a second suspect got away. Undercover officers found him in san jose last week. They say that he barricaded himself inside the house with two kids. He climbed on the roof, fell through the attic and into a bathroom shower. The two suspects are now being charged with Home Invasion robbery, assault and kidnapping. A family traveling to boston says they let their guard down for one second that that was long enough for a thief to make off with their bag that had 70,000 worth of heirloom jewelry inside. As our reporter showed us, they just got a very surprising call. We were extremely excited to be here and reunite with them. It was a Family Reunion of sorts. We caught up with the family earlier this week on what was supposed to be a fun family getaway in boston. They landed here at logan last wednesday on a redeye from california and jumped in an uber only to realize that a baguette been left at the rideshare pickup. My husband called the police right away and they were able to find the bag. He noticed that the bag was unzipped. Reporter they said the bag had about 70,000 worth of jewelry taken out of it. Family heirlooms like this necklace gifted on her wedding day and this watch belonging to her husband. People are getting wise to the cultural significance of jewelry, knowing that it is something that is a custom within the indian culture. Reporter so the investigation began and Massachusetts State Police used airport surveillance to pinpoint a suspect. Troopers said that he used a rideshare to get away. Feeling defeated, the family headed back west, but then on wednesday morning they got a call. We are still in shock and overwhelmed because we received some great news. Reporter state police found the alleged thief, a 47yearold man from norwood, along with the missing items. They were able to retrieve everything down to the boxes. We can only imagine the amount of coordination this must have taken. Reporter they are taking the time to ask travelers to keep their guard up. They are thankful for the detectives who picked up the case. Getting that phone call was just it was a miracle. If you do have to travel with a lot of valuables like jewelry, keep them with you at all times and do not put them in checked baggage. You can ask tsa to screen you and your valuables in private for security reasons. Not that i travel with things like that i think you need more than a tshirt today because it was chilly. Contra costa county says they have their first case of west nile virus this season. The patient contracted the case elsewhere but he or she lives here in the bay area. They were in the hospital for a while but they are recovering now. Earlier this week, the county Vector Control districts said they found the virus near milpitas thomas sunnyvale and santa clara. West nile is of course transmitted through mosquito bites but most people under 60 do not get seriously sick. Dont want to find out i dont want to find out, either. I dont like mosquitoes. But as far as the weather goes and the other camera shots around the studio, that looks cloudy, too. But it has been foggy, misty and cold and i am complaining to you because i can do something about no he cant, but he is the only conversion to complain to, sorry. We just could not shake the clouds in San Francisco today. If you are a fog aficionado, this is your day. The fog is spreading out with patches of drizzle. Might have to fiddle with the intermittent setting on the windshield wipers, but as the fog backs up to the coast, temperatures warm up to near average on friday before we get a brief in that heat wave saturday and sunday with the peak of the heat wave on sunday. Right back to near average temperatures tuesday through the rest of next week. So like all the warm spells or heat waves, this one is also going to be brief. No real heat wave risk tomorrow, but we see more moderate expanding on saturday and by sunday we have a moderate orange spreading across most parts of the bay area. Moderate heat risk means folks who are especially sensitive to the heat may have health complications. Temperatures topping out around 100 degrees in the delta and part of the trivalley. That is about as far as we will go. Back to near normal for the rest of next week, but things are pointing at the return of prolonged heat for parts of the bay area with eight to 14 day outlook showing above average temperatures as we head towards the middle of august. As the heat builds we have to watch air quality, too. It was in the good category today with some smoke drifting in from the flat fire. Most of it stayed to the north. So pretty good air quality today and we expect good air quality tomorrow. Some smoke will drift down from the north but mostly off the coast where we dont have to breathe it, so we are doing okay there. Looking towards downtown, you can see the level to which the fog has dropped to ground level. 59 degrees as the temperature in the city after a high of 62, which is the current temperature in oakland. We also have a mix of 60s and 70s and we are still a couple hours away from sunset. We are looking at near normal temperatures tomorrow after the widespread fog and low cloud cover dissipates. It backs up to the coast as we head towards midday, so yes, clearing skies even around the bay , but right around the coast you have gray skies for another day. Temperatures tonight drop down to the 50s. Pretty normal for this time of year. Temperatures tomorrow warmup, especially inland, which is where we find pistol. He is the right idea of hanging out in the shade just away from the sunlight. Temperatures in concord reach into the upper half of the 80s, which is probably a little bit too warm for an afternoon dog walk. Everybody within a degree or two of average with a mix of 60s, 70s and 80s for most of us. Just the hottest spots getting up to 90 degrees, but when the hottest spots are at 90 it can be a lot worse. Temperatures are not going to be that hot around the bay. Once again, San Francisco only hitting low 70s for one day, close to 80 in oakland and close to 90 degrees in san jose, but then back to nearly normal temperatures tuesday, wednesday and thursday. Temperatures inland in the east bay, trivalley and the delta getting up to around 100 but then back to normal. A lot of folks going from here to here to get away from the heat. And we are grateful for lower fire danger as always thank you so much. Still ahead, taylor sw my late fatherinlaw lit up a a room, but t his visionon dimmeded with age. E. Hehe had amd.
