Our Jose Martinez spoke with Community Leaders in oakland about whether this was the right move. Reporter i am here in oakland where more california Highway Patrol officers will be deployed as Violent Crime is on the rise. There is a Clear Division about this topic in the community. It is a concern shared by many oakland residents, like bishop bob jackson. The point of this is everyday we have these kind of problems in the city of oakland. Crime is out of hand. Reporter but this thursday, Bishop Jackson is saying that the chp will deploy more officers to fight against crime. What i hear from the community is that the community is not safe , that it is not safe to live in oakland anymore. That is the buzzword that is going around. People who cannot trying to move out of oakland. People that have bought into oakland are now sorry that they paid all that money for these houses, because Public Safety has to be number one, so i am thankful now that the focus is beginning to swing on Public Safety. Not everybody is on board like cat rocks. Libby schaaf proposed spraying in the california Highway Patrol twice. Those two times were during economic pandemic when crime was at an alltime high. So this is kneejerk reactionary, i want to look like i am doing something policy. Unfortunately for oaklanders, this is going to do nothing to keep us safer. Reporter she says the real problem is not being addressed right now. What we said was there was surely to be an economic pandemic that came on the heels of the coronavirus pandemic, that the housing insecure would become homeless, the food insecure would become starving, the job and secure would become jobless. She acknowledges that there is a safety problem and that more officers could actually impact black and brown communities. There is a rating for the levels of violence of Law Enforcement agencies in the state. Chp is top seven. We are talking about an agency that is consistently in the news for abuses against the community. Reporter she says that for now her organization will be on top of every single case chp can get involved. Crime remains a top concern for many oakland residents. Just last week a line stretched down the street with people waiting to get into a Public Safety meeting in the montclair neighborhood. Homicides across the city are down, but other crimes including car theft and burglary are up. It is not just oakland. At the beginning of may, newsom announced that he was deploying chp officers and the California National guard to respond to the fentanyl crisis in the tenderloin district.
