Now, you grew up in the church, obviously, deep gospel roots but i just found out that for all the singing you did and how early do you start . Jennifer my first solo was at seven but i didnt start singing with my eyes open until i was 19. Stephen you did not keep your eyes open until you were 19. Why and what was that like . Jennifer because i had stage fright. I would bake for a solo in church because i couldnt look at people and when im acting, i look at the floor because then everybody on the production will be feet versus people because you know, the whole audience its intimidating. Growing up in the church, you know, youre singingfrom within and from a certain place. Its more internal and so im singing with my eyes closed. I was performing like what happened to standing and singing the song. When i was 19, thats when i started singing with my eyes open and the one moment i closed my eyes. And then when i finished, i looked up and everybody was giving me a standing ovation. And that broke that fear. Stephen wow. [applause] im curious, you made an interesting distinction there between singing and performing. Whats the difference . Jennifer well, when you perform, youre exuding energy out and connecting. With people and the audience. But then singing, at least singing in church to me is more internal. Stephen could you sing the exact same song that sort of sounded the same to a layman, but you know one of those is performing and one of them is singing. You dont have to physically do anything else with your body to be performing, its true some intention that you have . Jennifer yeah, i guess its a different way of communicating, you know . Versus like when your internal, being with yourself and more intimate coming from a certain space. Whereas your allowing people in and performing. Its all about the energy. Stephen do you remember going back to that internal sort of performance . Jennifer definitely. I dont consider myself a performer, im a singer. I learned recently that you are a conscientious gift to give her. You put a lot of thought into it. Zasia theres an excel spreadsheet about it. Stephen for real . Zasia for real, huge dork, sorry. Stephen why do you think youre such so i dont want to say addicted. Zasia no, fully. I get a high and once they opened the gift its all over and like it is so sad. I want to take it back and give it to them again. I need another hit. Like what do you have, whens your half birthday . Can we talk about easter . I want to make them a thing so i can get someone a present. Stephen whats the best thing youve got . Zasia well, heres the real issue. My husband has one christmas forever because eight years ago he gave us our dog and it was a surprise. Thats a moose. Stephen there you go, there is moose. Zasia now, she is the best. Stephen are you a huge animal person . Zasia huge. We grew up with all sorts of animals, lizards, salamanders, tortoises, we had chickens growing up which was totally not allowed in our neighborhood. Stephen did you have a rooster . Zasia we didnt have a rooster but our neighbors would like to pretend we did and call the cops on the husk and my mom would answer the door with fresh eggs. If you go, hello, officer, is there a problem . Like yeah, would you like would you like a freshly baked muffin with freshly laid eggs . And theyd be like all right, we will see you next week. Stephen did you grow up in mayberry . Zasia i grew up in santa monica. Stephen you had chickens in santa monica . Zasia id call the cops on you. Stephen exactly everyone was justified. This is a new achievement. Youve got your first book that comes on an anthology of essays called my first popsicle. What does that mean . Zasia it means whatever it wants you to mean. Wed gone to dinner with friends of ours and they showed up late and like we are so sorry, we gave our son a popsicle for the first time and he had this incredible reaction to it and we had to stay. They showed us this video and this little boy, no longer a little boy. He had like this netflix special of emotions. Like all of the big ones. He was scared of it, then excited, then got a brain freeze, this is the best thing ive ever had. And i just was so stoked because like how universal it is that we all have these deeply emotional experiences with food and they are tied to family or other relationships, romantically, friendships, tradition, all of it. I told my book editors and they were like, thats a really cool idea. Its probably been done before. And then they found out it wasnt. Stephen whats yours, what you are deep emotional connection to food . Zasia my essay is about my love of christmas and gift giving because of my grandmother. She was obsessed with christmas and she had all these traditions surrounding it. One of them she would make this christmas dinner dessert which was some pudding with this sauce which im not totally clear it was like a eggs whipped up with some sort of cream and it got really foamy and it was delicious. When i got an email from my agent, ive done this piece for the magazine about a culture diary and they were like, david said youve been reading his book and hed like to write you a letter. It like i quit, im done, this is it, im out, ive peaked. I started this pen pal relationship and i asked him if hed write an essay and he asked if i could write about jello and hot dogs and i was like, yes. You can write about whatever you want to write about. And then he asked if i wanted to have breakfast with him. I was shooting the Flight Attendant in los angeles on a bus tour. And i was so nervous, i was so nervous i got there 30 minutes early. Stephen for breakfast . Zasia i got there 40 minutes early for breakfast and then i hid in the bathroom. And i called my manager and cried like i cant do it, you have to call and tell him i am sick. Like, i cant. Stephen she talk you out of it. Zasia thank god, we had breakfast and his husband came and you know, you say never meet your heroes. Its the best thing that ever happened. He was everything he wanted to be and then some.
