Look at the debris that is on the road, this is all because of that fire that broke out in the Early Morning hours this morning, it left a mess. You can see that from the debris on the streets. I want you to watch these flames from around 6 00 this morning, you are looking at the fire during the height of this, the flames were going right through this building. At least six people are displaced but she sings thinks that number could go up. No injuries, that is the good news. A woman told me she was driving past the fire and she could feel the heat of the flames through her windshield , the size of this fire was so massive, 40 trucks and at least 140 firefighters were fighting the flames. Here is what the chief saw when she got there. When i pulled up, i thought we were possibly going to see a full block go down. So im really proud of the members and what they did today. Really limiting the impact to the entire neighborhood. You can see the smoke at the intersection here in the hayes valley neighborhood. Fire crews again will be on scene for quite a while. The biggest concern is the scaffolding and we are told the Construction Company will be out here to take care of that, that could take hours, if not days. Back to you. Thank you, justin. Lets get over to first alert meteorologist, darren peck. Luckily in the city, it is a little bit cooler and we have the fog. And for that fire with a little bit more humidity, you are always concerned for some strong onshore wind, but that time of day is not too bad. We have a big drop in temperatures today, a little perspective because we have been up and down, lets look at what the average numbers are for today and when we do that, we will see that the temperatures for this time of year which are warming up to the upper 80s , 88 is the average. This is the main story. These temperatures are about 10 degrees cooler in some spots than yesterday, specifically inland. Bottom line, we started a cooldown today, we are going to see more of the marine layer over the next two days, it is going to stick around throughout the day. Strong onshore flow, certainly cooler, and there is a warmup for the weekend, we will look at that in just a bit. Back to you. Now that the pandemic has subsided, children Lunch Programs are coming with a heaping helping of bureaucracy. Good intentions may be getting in the way, Good Nutrition has changed. Now that they have gone back to the prepandemic rules , it may be discouraging kids from getting the food they need. After covid hit, they were served in a very different way. They were bagged and each bag contained enough meals for a week per child. Reporter those meals were given out in drivethrough lines similar to this food giveaway, people got used to the service and the numbers swelled, this is what the Summer Lunch Program looks like today. 10 kids were scheduled for food but only four actually showed up and three of those belonged to program volunteer , santana. The Lunch Program is sponsored by the usda and midsummer last year, they switched back to the prepandemic rules, requiring kids to eat the meal at the site during a 30 minute time period. The parent asks if they can take it home and they cant, so they seem discouraged, and they dont come back because they may not want to sit here or they may not want to eat the meal in that time, kids usually just want to eat a little bit and maybe eat a little bit later. Of the rigidity of the rules has had a dramatic effect. At its height, the redwood empire food banks Summer Food Program serves 150,000 meals. The summer they are on track to abo we have seen definitely a decrease in participation, it was great to have that option, where families could pick up the meals for their kids, whereas now we are hindering that. Its not that kids are accessing those lunches at a different location at this point in time. They are just not getting those lunches. While that might seem ungrateful for some, if the purpose of the program is to get food to people, it does make sense to deliver it in a way they want or need. It is unfortunate to know these relief programs could be suited a little bit differently or tailored a little bit differently, knowing that the community could use a different option so the kids are fed. Reporter at the stroke of 1 00, the window closed, the food was put away and everyone left. Now that covid has faded, the bureaucracy has returned with rules that must be followed even if they stand in the way of the mission. And the programs manager said there is hope, the usda is operating a pilot program, in some rural areas, testing the same system as during the pandemic. She said it might help for people to contact their congressional representatives if they would like to see change. Lets get a quick break from the news and go to the weather, we need to be enjoying the cooler temperatures now because its going to change pretty soon. By the weekend, but most of this week is below average, and we are really just starting that change today. It was in the mid90s for inland parts of Contra Costa County yesterday. Concord made it up to 94. Look at difference today. We will show you what the trend will look like here. This is concord, the sevenday specifically, a lot of days in the low 80s. We are going up to 101 by the time we get to sunday. The heat is coming back , but the two days that stand out the most would be thursday and saturday, simply for the contrast because we are going low 80s on thursday and then you are right on the verge of 100. Friday will be the transition date but thursday is the end of the time where we have the Cool Temperatures around and by saturday, we are back in the heat. Lets take a look at the current number in concord, it looks a bit hazy out there. 76 with a bit of a breeze. San jose, your number is only two degrees warmer, you are not feeling much in the way of the onshore breeze. And when we go to the city, it has been cloudy and cooler but at 68 degrees right now for San Francisco , that is relatively warm in the city. You can see the marine layer still hanging out along the coastline and over the city, 58 is the current number for downtown. It really depends on where you take the reading but 58 makes more sense for the way itll feel in the city, and you can see the influence the cloud deck is having. 78 over here. If we take that and play it forward in the futurecast, watch the clouds build, much more widespread tomorrow. Its much more of a foggy type scenario, far more widespread and is going to hang out until the morning. Plan on things looking a little grayer, feeling a little cooler through thursday and then the warmup comes back for the weekend. Theres the forecast for tomorrow, in the low 80s in livermore, in the mid80s for santa rosa and the sevenday forecast shows for oakland, upper 60s for thursday and friday and back to 82 on sunday, that is the warmup for you but for the north bay valleys, 97 will be the number in the valley, itll be 89 in san jose, we will bring you right up to the verge of 90 once again and yes, 101 for the inland east bay. But, low 80s for the next several days. May be the best players on the 49ers defense not at Training Camp, why the organization say they are not worried that the 49ers put their pads on for the first time for Training Camp on monday, but with one very notable player still missing. This is the volkswagen red and gold report. After four days of Training Camp, the 49ers finally got to start hitting each other on monday. The team held their first padded practice, but they were still without one of their best players, we are talking about nick bosa. Bosa remains out as he and the team negotiated a new contract but as he said last week, the general manager john lynch on monday expressed confidence that a deal will get done for the defensive player of the year. I dont like this. I dont like not having one of our best players here, he has a really good track record that im proud of as a group. But i also understand it, and i understand we are going to have to exhibit some patients and understand that ultimately this will work out. Im very confident , and we are looking forward to the day hes coming back. With the red and gold report, im vern glenn. We are looking at the eyepopping Mega Millions prize up for coming up at 3 00, would you get a manicure from a robot . We are looking at how Artificial Intelligence is changing the beauty industry. Looking at the sevenday forecast where most of the day is below average, San Francisco and oakland, you will be around 70 in oakland, but you do go back to the low 80s by saturday, so that does stand out because you are going to feel that most when you are inland and 100 in the north bay and we will get back up to 100 for the east bay, but rest of the week looks great if you like it cool. Tonight Mega Millions jackpot is going past the 1 billion mark. It would be the fourth largest and the lump sum option totals around 528 million, the drawing is tonight at 8 00 am a nobody has won the Mega Millions jack got since april 18. California was really lucky in the last drawing, a lot of big winners, i kind of feel like we should go buy a ticket. Why not, right . Are you going to do it .
