Reporter hes referring to this. Look at the water now near the Berkeley Marina, a reddish brown color, all the signs of an algae outbreak. I just did that short run like from the what do you call it, to that spot. Reporter San Francisco baykeepers now on the case. The group confirmed reddish brown waters in the Berkeley Marina and along the shores of emeryville, berkeley, and albany. We took samples and gave them to experts in identification and they preliminarily identified the species which is the same algae species that caused last years red tide algo bloom that culminated in a massive fish kill in San Francisco bay. Reporter baykeeper science director Jon Rosenfield says its too early to tell how this will proceed, but these images from last year worry him a lot. This was august 2022. Dead fish turned up on bay area shores. If it reaches the proportions and concentrations that it did last year and covers the extent of the bay it did last year, were very concerned another massive fish kill could occur and that would be really bad for the bays ecosystem and people who depend on it. Reporter rosenfeld tells me this phenomenon is not new and is a consequence of a bigger problem in the bay. Weve known nutrient pollution levels in the bay are very, very high, higher than most estuaries elsewhere in the world. So were at risk from this. The Regional Water Quality Control board understands the risk now. Really theres a risk to not taking action because when there are harmful algo blooms and San Francisco bay turns red and fish saturday dying, thats not good for business, right . Its not good for tourism. Its not good for businesses that want to attract employees here.
