And also in oakland, the civilian agency in charge of investigating misconduct are in charge of keeping up with tear case load. They report that the unit, which was formed in 2016 has staffing shortages and a lack of resources, and may not be able to complete the cases o their docket. The Police Departments internal Affairs Division has looked into the cases, but oaklands mayor has pushed for the independent civilian agency to take over. In a developing story, Seattle Police are investigatin a shooting last night. At least five people hurt and two in Critical Condition. Now here is the sad irony of it. The shooting happened around 9 00 p. M. At a Community Outreach event. Now Police Say Dozens of bullets were fired. This Community Event takes place every friday. They hand out foo and provide services to those i need. Seattle police say the latest violence is yet another reminder of how important it is to get guns off the streets. This is really disturbing when you have victims that are literally trying to do an outreach effort. Trying to help people out, get people on the right path. And this is what they end up getting hit with. Investigators believe there were at least two shooters, but we dont have any descriptions of the suspects. Now federal agents temporarily shut down the streets near the home of 34yearold Ryan Bradford after discovering the explosive. I was terrified for myself because oftentimes some of the posts would be describing someone in such vague terms tha it described me. It described m son, it described people visiting my house. I have to organize the next meeting. Reporter shakira got together with her neighbors in the upper diamond neighborhood and led the work to help next door create guidelines to comba racial profiling. The new rules require people to give more details in suspected crimes. In the end, she felt the changes didnt go far enough. The posts were still too vague to protect the innocent. And how do we start to grow our thinking and not immediatel think that black and brown folk are a threat to your safety . And this is amazing. Reporter the answer, education. Shakira and her neighbors have cofounded the Efficacy Group neighbors for Racial Justice ten years ago. Most of it is a dozen or so volunteers that have been white women with. Shakira has helped them understand and examine their own racial bias. The first one is acknowledging our racial bias. Reporter they teach what theyve learned to the Neighborhood Councils and schools in the east bay as they train others to share their presentation. She says shakira would help her set aside preconceived notions that she has held as a white woman. We move from a place of bein very critical of other people who hadnt learned these things to being empathetic, compassionate.
