Plus how a local group is hoping to change black friday to better help underrepresented communities. But we think conversation alone cannot be the answer. We need to start taking action and action is where true change happens. Tonight President Trump says that he may have to leave the white house, but he is far from conceding. But our top story now at 11 00 and streaming on cbsn bay area concerns tonight over the possibility of another covid surge as we take a live look at San Francisco on this thanksgiving night. Good evening. Im Andrea Nakano in for elizabeth cook. Im brian hackney. Ken is off tonight. In the past day california reported month are than 14,000 new cases and 104 deaths. The sevenday Positivity Rate is up to more than 6 depending on whether or not people followed Health Orders today, we could see another surge in cases the next few weeks. Kpix5s betty yu talked with doctors who are now preparing for the worst. Thats right, brian. Doctors say the spread of covid 19 on thanksgiving will not be seen immediately, but the cd is predicting that by mid december hospitals could be overflowing with patients in many parts of the country. California just hit a record of daily coronavirus cases yesterday. In Los Angeles Health officials expect shortages in nurse staffed icu beds in the next two weeks. We have a full icu of people with covid on ventilators who are fighting for their lives. So this is real. The numbers arent as bad here in the bay area. Still Santa Clara County saw its highest daily number of hospitalizations at nearly 200 patients yesterday. San francisco did not move into the most restrictive purple tier as expected earlier this week, but that could change. San francisco is like that last bit of sanctuary. Its like the safe house in walking dead, but youre being boxed in by all that purple. So its only a matter of time because of people moving back and forth. Ucsf Infectious Disease specialist dr. Peter chin hong said the rate of increase in cases and the number of hospitalizations are breathtaking. Ucsf, for example, recently doubled its admissions and that number has not changed this week. Were seeing more of a variety of cases. So there is essential workers. There are people who were just had pandemic fatigue. They might have been really good and stayed away from high risk environments months and months and months and then they went to that meal outdoors. Because Community Transmission is so high, dr. Chin hong says people are getting the virus in outdoor and outdoor settings. The cdc is stressing the importance of wearing a mask. It recently took a look at kansas mask mandate saying its proof face coverings work. Counties that implemented a mask mandate saw a 6 drop in cases. Counties that didnt saw cases rise 100 . Canada celebrated its thanksgiving six weeks ago and since then the number of covid cases diagnosed per day has more than doubled. The surge in the u. S. Is expected to be worse. Thanks, betty. All of those warnings mean a lot of people had to rethink their holiday traditions. For those used to big family gatherings, that meant new traditions like handing out meals to those in need outside this Planet Fitness in oakland. In san jose the annual flamingo bowl Football Game was replaced by low contact low bowling and lots of disinfectant. Its great to do activities outdoors, enjoy the sun. Its beautiful weather and were still making the most of thanksgiving even in covid. Theres lots of Silver Linings and this is one of them. The sun is shining. Theres a lot of fresh air. This is an easy compromise to celebrating consciously. Food insecurity is high during this thanksgiving. In san jose today hundreds of Homeless People and folks in need got a warm meal, but no warm place to eat it. Volunteers packed meals with all the fixings to go. Currently stricter county guidelines forbid indoor dining. With covid19 thanksgiving we had to use our imagination. I have not been able to go back to my fulltime job. Ill grateful to even have this and still have my car to sleep in. There are people far worse off than me. So believe me, im not complaining. For me to feel home, to feel support, to feel love because ive honestly sometimes feel like i dont have a place to go. Todays event was put on by a group called city team. If we really want to make systemic change, that requires us to first deconstruct. It requires us to rethink and it requires us to rebuild in order to create more just systems. Reporter if you want a list of the participating Small Businesses, we have that for you on our website, www. Kpix. Com. In San Francisco Susie Steimle, kpix5. The wind isnt going to be as strong tomorrow, but some breezy spots out there the rest of tonight. Well look at imagine having to put together a thanksgiving meal in the dark. It happened for many families in Southern California today. We know all too well about the Public Safety power shutoffs. Tonight with strong winds in an attempt to prevent fires Southern California edison temporarily shut off power to customers throughout the counties. It has said that you can hear a chorus of humming from all of the generators being used. Were lucky we have a generator, but the ones they dont have, i dont know what theyre doing. Its sad to know thanksgiving was ruined like that. This was our lifesaver today. We cooked our turkey on this grill today. We used a special method there with the water to keep it moist, but it allowed us to have our thanksgiving dinner. So cal edison says more than 5,100 customers are without power with no estimate on when it will be back. Whats usually a thanksgiving event with hundreds of people was cut to just a fraction this year for the usual reason. Memorial did very Different Things this year. The church served over 2,000 free meals, many to people from atrisk communities. If youre able to give a little bit back to the community, do what you can when you can. Thats what were doing this morning. Weve always tried to build like this beloved, Loving Community where people can come and feel like they can just be themselves and belong. In marin county it was picture perfect for the longest running Mountain Biking event in the country. The appetite seminar that started back in 1975 usually has hundreds of mountain bikers rolling up and riding for hours near fairfax and the Pine Mountain loop trail, but, of course, this year there were a lot fewer people about and bikers had to alternate their riding schedules for physical distancing. It was really trimmed down. I noticed a lot of people did sort of alternate rides this year. So covid times. Normally 700 or 500 or 900 people. Its a shame the covid, theres not so many people out here. This is just something you have to do. The idea by the way of ride on thanksgiving day is to burn off some calories so that you can gobble up a little more come dinner time. Instead of carving turkey some spent thanksgiving carving the slopes, but this year the tradition looks a little bit different during the pandemic. Reporter anna jiles is at Boreal Mountain with those trading pie for powder. Reporter skiers take it in stride. Just being out and getting some fresh air is an escape. I mean weve been inside for, you know, since march pretty much. So much time to get outdoors, to be outside, to get your exercise in and great weather and enjoy the outdoors. Why not . Reporter some came because covid canceled plans. With covid restrictions its kind of difficult for me to go home. So thought id just come over down from santa clara. So we drove up here a couple days, got an airbnb and thought wed hit the slopes for a little bit. Reporter people are required to wear a mask, but luckily most skiers do that anyway. The resort is limiting the number of people on ski lifts as well as the number of people allowed into the resort. Skiing is fun because its out in the open and its covid safe compared to like other sports. Reporter for some the slopes are an emotional release after a long year with hard life lessons. These times have bonded us as a family really close and im just thankful to have all those people in my life. Happy thanksgiving reporter we spoke with a group of International Students who told us they didnt fly home because of covid. Instead they came out here tonight best friends making the most of it out on the slopes. Now reporting on whats ahead in the weather, paul heggen standing by. Hey, paul. Lets check out futurecast wind gusts the rest of the night, noticeable gusts in the north bay, mountains and into solano county. The winds will calm down. Well wake up tomorrow morning with nearly calm winds, hardly a breath of air stirring around. Thats going to be the case throughout the day friday. So a noticeably less windy day. Well keep the sunshine overhead and still have temperatures that will be at least slightly above average. This is usually the point in the weathercast when i show you current temperatures with a nice view of San Francisco or somewhere else around the bay area. We get the nice view.
