Late last night north dakotas governor ordered a statewide mandate after months of saying it was unnecessary. The state now has the highest new case rate in the country. Michelle . Michael, thank you. Web, cbs news medical contributor dr. David agus joins us more with more on the raging coronavirus outbreak. Good morning. A big picture here. Back in march you were the first to call lockdowns and quarantines. Where exactly are we headed right now . Michelle, 180,000 cases in a day, which means the real number is probably closer to a million when you take into account asymptomatic people and people who arent testing. We have to change behavior. Theres hope on the horizon, the vaccines, but we really have to start to do something because each one of those 180,000 or a million, depending on how you look at it have family members, and theyre going home and talking to others, and the virus keeps spreading. Doctor, speaking of family, thanksgiving is coming up. Aaa is estimated 50 million americans will travel, most of them driving, but a lot flying. What would you tell families right now . Well, if you really want to get together with family, you need to start quarantining now and not go out so youre assured you have not been exposed to the virus by the time thanksgiving happens, or when you get together, wear masks and put the tables far apart and have a buffet so everybody can do this safely. Its critical that we do this right or the case numbers are going to continue to go up and were going to lose lives that should. Be lost. You mentioned the hope of a vaccine. We know with pfizer right now, 90 effective. Were hearing were going to get numbers. Look ahead next month and even six months. So where are we . These vaccines are hope in a bottle. Pfizer with 80 efficacy and astrazeneca, which means well have 85,000 doses by the end of december an well vaccinate the country. It will take six to eight months first with health care workers, front line workers, and then the rest of the country. But this vaccine will work. Weve seen the data, and it is safe. And so really there is hope. Light at the end of the tunnel. So if we change our behavior today, with that light at the end of the tunnel, the outcome is not going to be as dire as some of the pundits are saying. If we dont, its going to be a really rough six months until we vaccinate the country. David, is there a concern of people being leery about taking a vaccine, and how do medical professionals get past that . Certainly there has not been real data on the vaccine until monday, and monday i was literally in tears. Greater than 90 efficacy, blocking the virus. At the same time with over 90,000 people vaccinated around the globe, theres yet to be a serious adverse event related to the vaccines. So certainly very, very encouraging. As we get more data, myself and many others are going to stand up and start to explain it, and it looks like the data are going to make sense, that the benefits dramatically outweigh the benefits. Everybody is saying we dont have longterm data. Most, the side effects were seen in the first month or two. Weve had experience with all of these vaccines and theyre remarkably well tolerated. Good to know. Dr. David agus, thank you. President elect joe biden has matched President Trumps 2016 surge says in Electoral College volts. Cbs news projects joe biden has won georgia, flipping the traditional red state blue. And President Trump is the presumptive winner in North Carolina. These final projections expand former Vice President joe bidens lead in Electoral College votes to 306. Mr. Trump is still challenging the election with lawsuits and questioning the count in several states. Paula reid is live at the white house. Good morning. Good morning, dana. Yesterday President Trump addressed americans for the First Time Since the president ial race was called for joe biden. In his remarks he offered an optimistic outlook for the delivery of a vaccine but did not address the Record Number of new cases were seeing across the country, and he almost acknowledged he wont be getting a second term. Were ready to go. Reporter speaking to reporters in the rose garden friday, President Trump announced two covid vaccines could be approved by the end of the year and available to all americans as early as april. Pfizer announced on monday that its china virus vaccine is more than 90 effective. This far exceeds any and all expectations. Reporter but the u. S. Continues to set new daily records for covid infections, and cbs news has learned that the virus is once again hitting close to home for the president. Dozens of secret Service Members are believed to have coronavirus or are in quarantine, though cases linked in part to Campaign Rallies the president held over the last month. And for the first time the president almost acknowledged president elect joe bidens incoming administration. This administration is not be going into a lockdown. Hopefully whatever happens in the future, who knows which administration it will be, i guess time will tell. Reporter the refusal to admit defeat is hampering the gooden teams efforts to come b combat covid. Its imperative that our team have that access. Reporter but that didnt stop the president from weigh in on the pandemic, releasing a statement demanding the Trump Administration to take urgent action, asking americans to engage in mitigation efforts like social distancing and Wearing Masks until convenience can be delivered. On friday the Trump Campaign faced setbacks to lawsuits attempting to contest the election. They tell cbs news even if they dont win every case in court, the legal case itself riles up the base and helps with fu fundraising. David becker joins us. Ill ask you this morning. Any viable approaches right now . No. We have a clearer picture right now. We can see after multiple lawsuits have been brought over the last 11 days, the Trump Campaign has lost almost every one of them. They lost in michigan. They lost cases in one fell swoop in pennsylvania. Theyre bringing cases. All of their factual allegations are falling apart when scrutinized by a court. Has the fact that theyve filed lawsuits all over hurt them . Im not sure it hurt them. The margins are too large and very clearly president elect biden has won this election. I think as paula noted, its more likely to be a strategy to inflame the base and maybe set President Trump up for a post presidency where he can continue to fundraise and continue the allegations of voter fraud. Can we see it differently in different states . Yeah. I think the Trump Campaign is trying to bring stacks of affidavits in trying to imply because they have so many affidavits or pages, that theres something to them. When the courts look at them, theres nothing there. There are allegations that observers werent allowed to observe the vote counts, and, of course, we know we have a lot of evidence that observers from both parties, both campaigns were present and observing it. I think the allegations dont have much to them. David, what is the president ial transition act and why is it so critical . Well, the president ial transition act is to make sure that the new president is ready to govern on day one. And so parly when we might have National Security concerns or especially now during a pan dechlic, its really important the president elect biden on january 20th is ready to govern. Right now those efforts are slightly hampered by the fact that they dont have access to the agencies, they dont have access to the daily president ial briefings. And, of course, were seeing me republicans break with the administration to demand that that be done. Two quick questions, david. One, what are the consequences of the stonewalling and what about when the Electoral College gets together . What then if those cases are still pending . I think the consequences are dwindling at this point. I think the possible outcomes that could benefit the Trump Campaign are near zero right now. States are certifying their Election Results as we speak. Some states have done it. Many are certifying this coming week and the following week including key states like pennsylvania, michigan, arizona, georgia. So i think once those results are certified, the electors will be set. The legislatures have made clear theyre not going to interfere in the will of the people, which is a very good thing. So i think before december 14th, president elect biden is the president on january 20th. All right. David beck eric thank you. President elect biden is urging americans to wear masks and stay socially distancing. The incoming president is pushing ahead with transition plans despite President Trumps decision not to concede or authorize a federal agency to share classified information with the biden team, but there are signs the freeze is starting to thaw. Nikole killion is with the president elect in rehoboth beach, delaware. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you, michelle. President elect joe biden is spending time with his family here in rehoboth beach. Although, its a working weekend as he meets with transition advisers. Meantime President Trumps former white house chief of staff john kelly told politico he believes biden should start getting daily Intelligence Briefings and says the delay could impact National Security. Several republican senators have also issued similar calls. Officials with the Biden Transition Team says every day that biden doesnt get realtime threat informationive creases the potential for National Security implications. And while theyd like access to information, they pointed out they dont want to necessarily get into a food fight with the General Services administration. The agency has not yet recognized the president elects win, though through a process c ascertainment. A few days after naming his new chief of staff ron klain, aides say that more staffing announcements could happen soon, likely within weeks. Nikole killion, thank you. Its derived from hemp, a species of cannabis that doesnt create a marijuana high. What it has created is a booming cbd industry with a market value expedienting 2 billion. And while it may seem like a new trend, hemps history stretches back to ancient times. I headed to upstate new york to learn why it was banned in the u. S. And how the crop is making a comeback. Whats harvested on the Stone House Farm in upstate new york supports the local organic farming ecosystem. We grow wheat for local bakers, we grow barley for local brewers, rye for local distillers. Our corn and soybeans only go into chicken and hog feed for local farms. But the crop grown on a fracd of the reserve is this brands namesake. It has less than 0. 3 of thc, the psycho active compound that gives users you know. There are potentially many other patents and uses of cbd coming through. This is your hemp harvest. This is a small part of the hemp harvest. What we do is hang the hemp on lines and let it air dry and what were growing the hemp for is cbd, which is on these flowers. Hemp is nothing new. Among the First Agricultural crops, the fibers were used for cloth and paper in the ancient worrell and the ropes and sails aboard ships when discovering a new one. But by the 20th century mann with the burning weed with its roots in hell. In America Politics surrounding the 1937 Marijuana Tax act weeded out more than just a recreational drug. The cotton industry felt threatened by hemps potential as a textile. Then the Paper Industry was very threatened by hemp. And with henry fors invention of a car that actually ran on hempbased ethanol, they had no interest in seeing hemp successful either. They realized they could connect the drug cultivators of cannabis and hemp all in one basket. Thread for shoes for millions of american soldiers and parachute webbing for our paratroopers. But cannabis was banned outright by the controlled substance act of 1970. It remained illegal until the 2014 and 2018 farm bills eased restrictions allowing states to develop their own unique pilot program. Larry smart is part of new yorks pilot program. I work on two kroeps. I work on willow, which is a bioenergy crop, and for the last three and a half years ive been working on hemp. Smart believes hemp has the potential to combat climate challenge, but only if corporations commit to making more hempbased products over those derived from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels have the advantage that they can be delivered across long distances through pipelines while hemp fiber, for example, is very bulky. Its hard to move. So we need to have local agriculture supporting local businesses. Like the model at hudson hemp where the mission also includes improving soil health and air quality. Hemp was a diversification. Which is backed by some highprofile supporters. My husband davids mother, Peggy Mcgrath rockefeller, founded the American Farmland trust. She wanted to save American Farmland. Usan rockefeller is a board member of the Peggy Mcgrath Rockefeller Foundation which owns this land. Were trying to restore, rejen rate, an reimagine a food system that can benefit the land, all the animals, and the people that rely on it. Thats no easy feat for Small Farmers who already have razor thin margins. Many rushed to grow hemp for cbd, but that drove prices down. Thats great. Youre funded by the rockefellers. We have to pay it back, but, yes, we are. But the average farmer isnt. How can the average farmer afford this kind of diversification. There are several small hemp farms who have grown a half acre, an acre, two acres, a manageable amount. The investment to do that isnt very much. If youre already a vegetable fafrmer, you can incorporate it. Im seeing these are mostly the hemp farmers surviving. Our climate problem is we have too much c02 in the atmosphere and not enough carbon in our soils, trees, and wetlands, and if what we were to do to adapt on a wider scale, the planet does have the space for more regenerative agriculture forests, wetlands rebuilding to sequester a lot of our excess c02. Theyve processed 32,000 tons of c02. Think about that. I just learned so much there, michelle. Im so glad. It was good. When he was saying local farms to help local businesses as much as theres the challenge because you need do that because of the hemp, thats a great thing to have the smaller footprint once again. But you asked a great question. It costs a lot. Yeah. Youve got to figure it out. Everybodys got to get on board not just with this particular crop but a lot of other ones out there that could be the change agents. Right. Hes currently out with his 15th wimpy kid book along with a slew of offshoots. We met kinney on his latest tour, a socially distanced one, though no less fun. Hi, guys. How are you . Reporter try finding another author who will hand you a book with a pool skimmer. Were going over the top. Or chuck a water balloon at your car with your kids inside. Here we go. Hes going for it. Reporter literally those are my kids. Such is the life and touring schedule of jeff kinney, the most popular childrens author inform t in the world. Why did you do this . I think that kids really need something fun right now, something physical, something to look forward to, something thats not canceled. Reporter the deep end virtual pool party based off his most recent book continues jeff kinneys commitment to not just righting prolifically but engaging with fans nonstop even at their homes. In august i went out on the road and it was just me, a man, a mask, and a sixfoot trident. And thats how we handed off books. It gave parents something to do that doesnt stink about 2020. Reporter kinney long dreamed of writing comics but wasnt able to publish the first wimpy kid book until 2007. Eight years after he began writing down a diary of the rough middle School Experiences of a fictional character named gregg heffley. I think im stuck in this middle school world just like greg heffley. I like things right at the edge of childhoods end. Have a great day, sweetie pie. Reporter his first book quickly became a smash hit and almost immediately movie studios were calling. I was really scared when i was first approached about a movie because my second book hadnt yet come out. It felt like too soon. I hadnt gotten my feet underneath me. You have to make those decisions quickly. Youre under the gun. Reporter the live action diary of a wimpy kid movie was followed by three more. The deep end is kinneys 15th in the wimpy kid series, all of them mega best sellers. Produces at least two a year, doing both the writing and illustrating. He writes the jokes first and then constructs the story around it. The pages are full of bathroom humor, inept adults, and confused striving kinds, sort of normal life or as normal as life gets these days. Kids are really good at rolling with things, but i do think when we look back years from now, this is going to be a moment that theyre really going to remember. Im worried about the imprint that this is going to make on kids lives. What is it going to do to kids who live through a year and a half o this where theyre being conditioned not go near people,. Ut im worried about kids mental health. Im trying to give kids a laugh, you know . I feel really privileged that i have an audience, and i think laughter is needed now more than ever. Reporter in addition to the books and movies, kinney has used his now vast fortune to open an independent bookstore in his adopted hometown of plainville, massachusetts. Its called an unlikely story. I think were living through a time right now thats quite difficult for independent bookstores. I know that some wont survive. But i think the importance of independent book stors has become abundantly clear, and i hope when we enter our new world, we treasure things like independent bookstores that we need to treasure. Reporter 13 years after his first book the deep end is another best seller for kinney, no surprise for his readers who see themselves in the pangs of his stories. How did you come up with the character . Hes a lot like me, like i was when i was a kid. Its like a mirror and sometimes that moment is really special when we meet each other and see eye to eye. Of course, now our faces are covered with masks and there are a lot more barriers. So im looking forward to a day when we with connect again more personally ive read all of your books. Thank you. Do you ever see yourself getting tired of this . I hope not. Id like to get to at least 20 books. Im in a real position of privilege where if i write something, whether its good or bad, its going to reach millions of kids around the world, and its really hard to walk away from that. Jack fell in love with these books a few years ago. And then i got to take him to the virtual pool party. Its a great gateway. Best by giving life to ancient food traditions. Up next, native American Chef brian yazzie found a way to revitalize healthy indegenous cuisine and add his own modern touches. Well meet him next. The push to make cars more environmentally friendly is nothing new, but some students in the netherlands are taking up the challenge. Alt first glance youd never think this bright electric sporty car is made entirely out of trash. Its special because its made all out of waste. Reporter and all the waste has a place. The frame is made from plant tears and recycles bottles. The body, hard plastics, appliances, kitchen appliances, and tvs. It took about a year and a half for students at the university to put the oneofakind vehicle together. Nobodys ever built a car before, so its very difficult, of course. Luca has a top speed of 56 miles an hour and go 136 miles when fully charged, but students say what really drives them goes far beyond class credit. Reporter proving you can find potential in things we throw away with some clever maneuvering. Rylee carlson, cbs news, london. Cbs this Morning Saturday will be right back. This morning on the dish arizona born indigenous chef brian yazzie comes from the Navajo Nation where he learned ancient food traditions from his family. Hes brought them to minnesota, using local ingredients to create modern dishes while caring for his community in a particular time of need. Jamie yuccas has his story. The ingredients, techniques, and presentation are all rooted in tradition. Did your mom make indigenous food . Growing up i remember my muslim, you know, stepping out the back door, getting some lambs quarters or known as wild spin arab. Reporter indigenous food is known for three key ingredients called the three sisters. Corn, bean, and squash. Corn is one of the main staples with my tribe. Here in the midwest, theres one sister that we add called the fourth sister, and that is wild rice. Reporter brian yazzie started cooking for his family, a big family, when he was just 7 years old. Being the youngest out of eight siblings and coming from a singleparent household, i tried my best growing up to help my mom. Reporter when he wasnt stove, yazie got involved with the wrong crowd in arizona. I started following the wrong crowd. Reporter then one day while out of the streets came a calee from his sister that led him to his passion. She was saying we miss your cooking. Why dont you come home and prepare a meal for the week . I would come home for days alt a time to cook and that was their way of checking on me. So i came up with the term that cooking saved my life, you know. Reporter but it wasnt until his now wife huna mana gave him an ultimatum, move to minnesota together for a fresh start or she was leaving him. Thats when he he knew he needed to choose a new path. Now his goal is to inspire the next generation of young chefs. My philosophy is cooking in two worlds. Reporter traveling around the world, sharing his knowledge, and picking up local native ingredients used in dishes he prepares at the gathering cafe. Its almost like a meal now. Yeah. Reporter like this hot chocolate yazzies assistant Vanessa Casillas stirred up for us. I cant wait to try it. Oh, my gosh. This is delicious. This is roasted duck. And the corn is traditional c n corn. Whats the spice . Red chilchili. Minnesotans are not to crazy about spicy anything. No. Too crazy. No, i i started out with ketchup. No, im kidding. So do you start out with two times as hot . Ten times as hot . Probably five times as hot. Really. Yeah. I try not to do too much when im cooking. I try to reintroduce these types of ingredients. Reporter when the pandemic hit, the cafe was forced to close and his team went from serving 100 meals a week in its dining room to cooking and delivering meals to native elders every day for free. Grants, local health care companies, and jose andres Charity World central kitchen are helping fund the meals. I think a lot of us who Pay Attention to News Headlines have been just so concerned about the Navajo Nation when it comes to the pandemic. Yeah. The elders are the last people hanging onto the languages and cultures that. Was my way of giving back. If the elders die and language dies, what do you have anymore culturally . The same thing with food, right . Has it been interesting to you that its become almost a fad to have indifrmg news food or people wanting to hear more from indigenous chefs . Yeah. Now you have people talking about hear loom squash, different amaranth or quinoa. Reporter how lucky for all of us who get to experience the culture and learn about the past through yazzies cooking. For cbs this Morning Saturday, jamie yuccas, minneapolis. I miss us tasting the incredible dishes. And the chowing down. And the colors of it all.
