Now at 11, the coronavirus targets a new segment of the population in one bay area county as the pandemic spirals out of control. Some San Francisco residents say they feel increasingly unsafe living in hotels that are used to shelter the homeless. Tonight, we look into their concerns. The coronavirus spreading out of control. California reporting nearly 7500 new cases today but here are the really troubling numbers. Hospitalizations are up about 38 compared to two weeks ago. And the number of patients in intensive care has spiked 34 . The state also reporting 69 new deaths yesterday. One bay area county is seeing a spike in cases right now in a new segment of the population. As Andrea Nakano reports from downtown novato. Reporter the Marin County Health department is learning specific things about this recent outbreak. In order to slow the spread the recommendation right now is for restaurants to voluntarily decrease their indoor capacity from 50 two 25 . As soon as the recommendation came down, the winery in downtown novato reduced its indoor capacity to 25 capacity. It is definitely a large setback, very unfortunate. These last six months have been very difficult for every small business. This comes as marin county sees a rise in new cases. In the last four days the numbers have increased into double digits with a high of 24 new cases coming earlier this week. County Public Health officer, dr. Matt willis presented the board of supervisors with these numbers pretty said indoor gatherings are mostly to blame and the virus is now affecting a different segment of the population. It shows for the First Time Since the very beginning, since april, where weve had more cases in white residents than latin x residents. Here at this winery they made changes to the space. They opened up their wine rooms to generate a little more business during these tough times. I think we will be able to weather the storm. It will be hard few months but we will make it through. Dr. Willis is right now this is just a recommendation to try to keep marin county from falling back into the right ear but if the numbers continue to increase it could be in order by next tuesday. Tonight one School District just voted to continue Distance Learning until june 15, the Franklin MckinleySchool District is located in san jose. During one break in someone got into donnas car, the next time the intruder broke into individual apartments. There was someone going up and down the back stairs, trying the back doors and stuck his head in and opened it up on top. There was a report yesterday that someone was throwing knives at a tree. Michael has been watching all of this and fold the alerts on his cell phone. I cannot remember a time seeing reports of active shootings in broad daylight, ever in my time here. Neighbor say the changes to critical criminal activity coincided with the changes the city and state have made. Hotels that used to be reserved for tourists on lombard street have been given to people experiencing homelessness who didnt have anywhere to shelter in place safely. Public records obtained by kpix out 911 calls have tripled since the city started housing Homeless People there. Going from one or two calls a month to up to 14 calls a month at its peak. We have received complaints from neighbors living in three other hotels housing homeless and some complained of open drug use, others cited overdoses in sexual acts being performed during the day. At each of those hotels emergency calls also tripled after on house individuals moved in and going from 22 calls over a six month period to 60. That said he wont tell us which hotels are in use and the department of Emergency Management either lift reasons for the 911 calls on our record request blank or black them out. Both department say the omissions are to protect peoples privacy. We have a Carte Blanche ability if we need to as workers to call the police, call medical, and it is a rare occasion when we have to. It happens, but not that often. Russell rosener works at the bonavista, one of the shelter in place hotels for the homeless. He says hed like to see people embrace this program because its making a big difference. We are seeing a lot of people coming in and a pretty bad situation or crisis. Overtime, as they stay at our sites theyve gotten better and better. Thousands of Vulnerable People have been able to stay safely in place. Abigail stewart is the interim director of the department of homelessness and support of housing. She says the program has been at tremendous success. So much so that you hotels will become permanent housing creating 350 units for homeless residents through the States Project home key program. We need to work really fast to move through all of the purchase and start moving people in as quickly as possible. Is it doing what it was intended to do, is it helping people . I think its been incredibly successful. The executive director of the tenderloin housing clinic says this program has helped make the bread like the tenderloin more safe. Instead of being on the street in front of peoples homes, more than 2000 people have been housed. Which also reduce the potential for the spread of covid. People that are on house, in a crisis for them, it became not only a crisis for them but a health risk for everybody else. 29 hotels are in use for the shelter in place program. Its costing the city 10 million a month to operate in more than 2000 people have been brought inside because of it. But the city has not been transparent throughout this process. Why dont journalists and neighbors have the right to know who is staying where . That i would have to refer you to the City Attorneys Office about. We brought up neighbors concerns. They say they have noticed an increase in crimes, they dont feel safe. That is often at hotels that are not controlled by the city. Theres a lot of this information out. Was the bonavista ever part of this program . I cant provide that information to you because of the confidentiality requirement. We have confirmed that the bonavista is a shelter in place property and homeless residents might be staying there until june 2021. And though showers will move across the rest of the bay area as we had through friday evening and friday night. Still some showers on the radar simulation by midnight, but as we head towards Early Saturday Morning those get out of here and most of the cloud cover gets out of here. We are not talking about a tremendous amount of rainfall, which is good. Mostly 1 10 to one quarter of an inch of rainfall and that another chance of rain by the middle of next week with dry conditions in between. So everything working out the way we like to see it. Temperatures back to the mid to upper 60s inland for saturday and sunday, the warmest days will be monday and tuesday before the next chance of rain arrives by the middle of the week.
