Reporter is it really all over . We have to stop treating our opponents as our enemies. They are not our enemies. Theyre americans reporter after a wild week of waiting, president elect joe biden delivered his victory speech last night in wilmington, delaware. This is a time to heal in america. President trump this is a major fraud on our nation. Reporter President Trump has not called to congratulate biden. He has not seeded to defeat. Reporter what we do know is what we saw for ourselves. President trump this will be the most important election in the history of our country. This is the most important election of our lifetimes. Reporter the candidates framing the stakes in this election. Never mind the threat of coronavirus. We saw long lines at polling places. Ballots cast in numbers demonstrating how intensely republicans and democrats both believe that the course of our democracy was, indeed, on the line. Voter participation was the highest in more than a century. And the outcome. What is extraordinary about this election is despite a pandemic, a Great Depression levels of unemployment, huge turmoil, an impeachment before that, you have ended up seeing the partisan divide as deep, as rooted as ever. Reporter journalist farid zacaria. In some ways the pandemic has been a great reveal ler. Er. What the pandemic has revealed, perhaps more than anything else, is were really two countries. Reporter so no Real Movement across the ideological divide. Think world war i trench warfare, advances and retreats measured in feet, stalemates, but a war just the same. Armed protestors. Describe an emotion you felt this past week anxiety, fear of what might happen . 50 years ago, when i moved to the u. S. From lebanon, i never thought i would be concerned about violence, conflict, and even bloodshed in this country. Rporter harara balion heads the conflict Resolution Program at the Carter Center in atlanta, which has monitor more than 100 elections worldwide. What ive seen around the world is far, far more violent, bloody, destructive conflict and civil war. Were not there. But, nonetheless, that is not to say we should not be concerned. I think americans should be worried about the fabric of our society really fracturing. We havent crossed that line, it hasnt fractured yet. But were not too far from that. Reporter this is the united states. That couldnt happen here, could it . Hypothetically, yes. Reporter yesterday morning at 10 36 washington time, donald trump, en route from the white house to his virginia golf course, tweeted this cbs news projects that joe biden has been elected the 46th president of the united states. Reporter within an hour, news organizations, including cbs, called the election for joe biden and Kamala Harris. We did it, joe. Youre going to be the next president of the united states. [applause] reporter a National Party erupted across the united states. Not celebrating. The roughly 70 million americans who voted for President Trump. We want trump reporter how many of them no longer trust the legitimacy of the process . Such as this man in georgia, echoing the president s words. It almost seemed like they were waiting to see how many votes trump had, and then they would count the rest to make sure biden had just enough. Reporter what is the longterm cost to our democracy . Widespread doubt . Our work is hard for those who didnt vote for me as those who did. Let this grim era of demonization in america begin to end here and now [applause and cheering] reporter how likely is it that joe biden will convince nearly half the electorate that he is their president , too. Our nation is shaped by the constant battle between our better angels and our darkest impulses, and what president s say in this battle matters. It is time for better angels to prevail. Im not going to be a pollyanna. This is going to be one of the hardest things weve had to do as a republic, which is to tone things down. Reporter longtime political commentator joe klein. Job number one, probably for joe biden, it looks like, but also for the congress and the courts and for us as citizens, is to figure out ways to reach out to each other and start conversations. Reporter and what are the chances of that happening . Or. They deserve a minimum wage of 15. Im going to ask big corporations and the super wealthy to begin to start to pay their fair share. Reporter the issues biden campaigned on actually getting passed unless the democrats can flip the senate, likely only if they win both georgias runoff votes in january. President elect bidens agenda will hit a formidable red wall there, by the mai name of Mitch Mcconnell. The same Mitch Mcconnell who set out to make barack obama a oneterm president. The same Mitch Mcconnell who sabotaged Barack Obamas court pick, merrick. For the moment, the g. O. P. Still sounds like the party of trump. But. I dont think you can underestimate the incredible power that a president has in setting style for the country. Just look at what donald trump has done. I think that if you have a different president setting the tone, there are things that are going to change. Reporter the dozens and dozens of executive orders and regulatory rollbacks President Trump signed into affect with the stroke of his pen, joe biden plans to start undoing them on day one, january 20th. Youre going to start paying your fair share. Reporter he is expected to reengage with the world, all be it, a weary world. The world has seen there is this backlash in america. So it wont be able to forget it. Joe biden can demonstrate that there are two americas, and one does want to be engaged. He can move aggressively and intelligently, but it wont change the fact that people have seen that other america, and they know its lying there, maybe dormant for now. But it could rear its head again. Tonight the hold world is watching america. Reporter trying to read joe biden and Kamala Harris after their historic victory. Well lead not only by the example of our power, but by the power of our example. Reporter biden won with more votes, 74 million and counting, than any american president ever. While i may be the first woman in this office, i will not be the last. Reporter harris will be the first woman, the first person of africanamerican and asian descent, and the first child of immigrants to be elected vice president. Every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities. Its time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the tonight, see each other again, listen to each other again, and to make progress. Reporter whats the takeaway from this messy, sometimes ugly, election . It is really healthy for us to see who we are and where we are. Reporter good news, according to noted harvard historian danielle allen, author of a book about the declaration of independence. The source of this appeal is right there on his canvasses in black and white. As Elizabeth Palmer will show us. Reporter a centuryold Pierre Soulages, known as the master of black, may move slowly, but this outlook is bright. I have to congratulate you on reaching your 100th birthday. How have you feeling . [speaking french][speaking throh interpreter] im actually in my 101st year, so very happy. But to tell you the truth, it is not much truth than being 90. Reporter he lives in the small french town of sete in the mediterranean. In a modernist house he built with colette, his wife of 78 years. His studio is filled with his tools, many home made, and stacked of unfinished work, turned to the walls, so they dont distract them. [speaking through interpreter] i prefer to see them, otherwise they call to me. Reporter there is no question soulages paintings commend attention. Theyre big, bold, and overwhelming black. In the 1950s, soulage made a name for himself in new york, which was emerging at the center of the modern art world. [speaking french][speaking throh interpreter] i so enjoyed new york, to quote a french writer, new york is a city that stands tall. [end of translation] reporter back then, soulage was part of the avante garde, experimenting with challenging abstract forms. They revealed things that live within us, but that we might not have recognized. Reporter as a young artist, soulage did use some color. And then one morning in 1979, when he and colette were living in paris, he noticed how reflections transformed the surface of black paint. He found his medium, and began to experiment with scoring and even exult sculpting it on the canvas. Why does black move you . Because the movement is limitness. I say black, but it is light that is key. Light reflects off the canvas. That is what my work is all about. I paint with light. Reporter he calls it beyond black, the way the light turns the black to brown or gray or even shining white. Each time it is a new experiment. Reporter just before the coronavirus pandemic, soulage became only the third artist, after picasso and chagall to have a solo exhibition at the louvre during his lifetime. The way the paint is on the canvas makes the light very different, whether you are on one side or the other side, whether the light is direct or indirect. Reporter in the town of rodez, near where he was born, there is a Museum Dedicated to Pierre Soulages. It is filled with masterpiece, says the director, because soulages is a perfectionist. You can see it is gathered in the place, where he is burning the paintings. Reporter he burns the paintings he doesnt like . Yes. It is impossible to find bad pieces of soulages. Reporter he may be 100 years old, but the master of black is determined to keep painting. In his mind, it is important to prove to the world he is able now, today, to make some paintings. Reporter to keep working . Yeah. He keeps working. Reporter he relies on his assistant, ismael, and a stone he put at the studio door to worn visitors away so he can concentrate in the time that is left on the power and possibilities of black. The largest in history. And it is still growing. More than 100 million of those votes were cast early, double the 47 million votes four years ago. A projected 66. 3 of eligible voters turned out. Up sarply from 2016. Thats the highest percentage of eligible voters since 1908. But it is also far short of the alltime largest share of voters to turn out more than 82 in the bitterly disputed election of 1876. This copy of ulysses joined by author james joyce and andre matist, can you yours for 45,000. When it is from . 1945. Reporter so it is almost as old as this bookstore . Almost, yes. Reporter at 93 years old, the strand is a new york institution. Four floors of books, chosen by Staff Members who have to pass a literary test before being hired. But it is also a family tradition. My grandpa was a real book man, as was my dad, but my dad had a very Good Business sense. Reporter nancy bass wyden is a Third Generation owner of the store in greenwich village, but the book trade has never been easy. How cutthroat was it back then . There was one store called the cheapest bookstore in the world, so. Reporter still, the strand endured through the Great Depression, world war ii, 9 11 even amazon, we were fine against, but this covid whos really knocked our socks off. Reporter that is true for the Stores Across the country. These are the one thats that are very durable. Reporter but for some book shops, there is a secret weapon a community of readers who want them survive. In st. Louis, missouri, jeffrey and his wife created eyeseeme. Representation matters, and having my children see themselves in the books they read help them become selfmotivated by learning. And they did extremely well through school and we continued to see the benefits. Reporter the shop opened amid protests over the Police Shooting of a local 18yearold, michael brown. Suddenly everyone wanted what eyeseeme was selling. People that were not africanamerican, they wanted to expose themselves and their children to know about africanamerican and africanamerican cultures. All children need to see more books with representation of other people to dispel stereotypes. Reporter but in april, during the pandemic, the store began to struggle. In an effort to hold on, blair started a gofundme campaign. Is that a moment whe when you had to sort of swallow some pride . Absolutely. Even before we pressed the button, i was, like, i really dont want to do this. But we reached our goal in a week, 25,000. The community really showed up for me. There are so many institutions that are closing, and this is one place i cannot imagine new york without. Reporter two weeks ago, the strand posted a plea for help and the whole world responded. In 48 hours, we received 25,000 internet orders. In a typical day, well receive 300 internet orders. Reporter by then, wyden had already furloughed most of the strands 216 employees, even though she got a loan from the government cares act. Asking a business to sustain eight months of sales at a 30 level, its a marathon. Reporter and how many people are working here now . We have 79 people, and were quickly rehiring. Reporter and this was going to switzerland . Switzerland. Reporter rehiring cant come quick enough for shipping clerks like uzidema. The more paws up, thats more work. Everybody is happy. Reporter the store is counting on more than books to keep costumers interested, including masks and totes, all designed to appeal to holiday shoppers. So the holiday bump is really important to this shop . It is essential for us and all independent bookstores. Reporter and both eyeseeme nancy blair and the strands wyden, hope the season continues and spreads. What do you know now about a bookstore than you didnt know a year ago . How wonderful the Strand Community is. I just treasure them even more than than ever. Pauley Sophia Lorens performance in two women earned her an academy award. Now after a long absence, she is back on the screen, in a new film that is all in the family, her family. Here is seth doane. Reporter in a career that spans 70 years, it is a performance that stands out. The life ahead, out this week on netflix, is Sophia Lorens first feature film in a decade. Watching her on screen is like catching up with someone you havent seen in a while. Were all a bit older. It is time for me to start again at my age, which im not going to tell you, but maybe you know it already. But it is fun. It is fun. It is wonderful. Reporter since its public knowledge, well divulge sophia loren is now 86. Everybody ages, i mean, me, too. Im not a saint. What can i do . Should i be afraid . Why . Its wonderful. And i look wonderful for my age anyway. Reporter i would agree. Thank you. Reporter throughout her career, she has played decidedly unglamorous roles. Her latest, madame rosa, is a former prostitute, who cares for the kids of other sex workers. She lives on the margins of italian society, much like loren did growing up in poverty with an unmarried, single mom in a suburb of naples. Thats why i made the film. She reminded me a lot about my mother. My mother was absolutely like that. Inside, she was very fragile. But she looked strong. Reporter the family connections do not stop there. The films director is edoardo ponti, her son. Who is the boss onset . H he pretends not to, but he is the boss. Reporter he doesnt even need to speak and it says a lot. Edoardo is the younger of two sons loren had with her late husband, carlo ponti, the movie producer who first discovered her as a tie teenage jer inr in a re beauty pageant. Did you always have your mom in mind for this role . I wish she did. I dont think anybody could have inhabited the role the character of madame rosa the way she did. If my mother happens to be such an amazing actress, and i happen to be a director, i would be an idiot if i did not cast my mother in my movies. Reporter the story chronicles the unlikely friendship between a holocaust survivor and a 12yearold muslim immigrant from senegal. Momo, played by inbrahim, his first acting role. [speaking italian] he was really like somebody he has always been in this business. I think he was born for it. I think so. Reporter thats no small compliment from loren. Who has played opposite the likes of clark gable hello, sweetheart. Paul newman, Marlon Brando and cary grant. Im certain you wouldnt do anything to embarrass me. Reporter did you secondguess at all, putting this completely untested actor next to your mom in these leading roles . Thank god i didnt. To make sure he felt comfortable with my mother, we all actually, during the shooting, lived together under the same roof. So he could see her the way that i see her. Reporter so i ibrahim would get up in the morning and see her . Correct. It was the only way to create the right balm for them to know each other. Reporter it was a way for the young actor to see loren as an italian mom, not a movie star. We glimpseed that, too. Had coronavirus precautions not kept our interview virtual, loren, at home in switzerland, said she would have welcomed us and cooked pasta. Perfecto. Arrivo reporter loren was the first to win a best actress oscar in a Foreign Language film, 1961s two women. For decades, she has dazzled audiences with her talents, but much has been made of her beauty. For someone who has been such an icon of beauty, how has your definition of beauty changed, or has it . It is not important, the appearance. It is important maybe in films, huh . But it is what you have to give inside of yourself, your soul, your everything, the way you believe in things, the way you are with your family, the way you are with your friends, thats life, really. Thats a good life. Reporter loren had taken a nearly decadelong break from acting to dedicate time to her family until the right part with the right director came along. How was it to work with your son . Oh, not good. Not good at all. Very bad. Very bad. Because he knows me so well. He always knows how to push the right buttons for me to be able to react and do whatever he thinks should be done. My mother approaches every movie like it was her first. And part of her process is, oh, my god, i cant. And part of my process is, no, no, no, of course you can. Reporter she really doubts herself . Every day. Every take. Every moment. And it is beautiful because she still approaches it with the same anxiety, the same spontaneity, and the same passion as if it were her first film. Reporter do you agree with him . Yes. I know my son. Yes, he is right, he knows me. Reporter their film is already generating oscar buzz, and theyre passionate about its messages of tolerance and the value of nontraditional families. If this film can give an audience the idea to love others and live their lives to the fullest, then anything is possible. Reporter it must be quite something to come together and create a product that you love with someone you love, and you put it out there and the world sees it. Absolutely. It is good for my soul. Reporter how . Because it aligns everything that i love my work, my mother, telling stories it aligns everything. Bello, bello. I have a good son, a good son. And i have a good mother, a good mother. Pauley fair to say, nobody enjoyed a more special halloween than the little girl Steve Hartman wants you to meet. Reporter a search for hope at the end of this anxious week led me to this humble bundle, zoe, now 3, is the proud product of t. J. And Courtney Thomas of atlanta, georgia. Look who is here. Hello, cameo. Reporter back in february, zoe was diagnosed with leukemia, and because her immune system is now compromised, she couldnt go trickortreating last weekend with all of the other kids. In fact, her parents had to put up a sign to keep others away. Sorry, no candy, child with cancer. The whole purpose so we wouldnt have to keep telling kids sorry and have disappointed kids. Never expected anything like this. Reporter never expected those little ghosts and ghouls to be such saints. I immediately started crying. Reporter there at the foot of the sign, trickortreaters left their halloween candy for the child inside. Doorbell camera footage shows kid after kid, making the same characterdefining decision, mostly on their own. No grown ups were there telling you what to do . No. She dumped her whole bag. Reporter your your whole bag . I wanted to give back. Reporter the empathy we heard and saw, courtney says it it was just the medicine her family needed. During this crazy time, with everything going on, just a gesture that were all in this together and just to remind each other there is still hope and love. Reporter still hope, love, and much better roles models than the ones we obsess over. Were all finding ways to keep moving. But how do we make sure the direction were headed is forward . Pauley cartoons with drawings by a new yorker magazine star, harry bliss, featuring captions by steve martin, the steve martin. How artist and writer came together makes for a funny story, as mo rocca will tell us. I kind of like this one ih for like a day. Atilla the honeybunch. Reporter the man who has made millions laugh we are the wild and crazy guys [applause and cheering] reporter finds himself chuckling. That word honeybunch kind of makes me laugh. Reporter and the cartoon steve martin finds so am moving i amusing is one he helped create. It was a completely unique experience. It is the precision of one thing. Reporter martin, who collaborated with new yorker cartoonist harry bliss calls cartooning comedys last frontier. This is a one second link between the picture and the words and sometimes no words. Reporter he certainly covered a lot of ground in his halfcentury career. King tut reporter as a standup oh, no, im getting happy feet. Reporter as a star of classic film comedies bring us some fresh wine. No more old stuff. Reporter as a writer of movies, plays, short stories, novellas and tweets. And he also plays the banjo. Im sure we brought something out, but we havent got all morning. You could sort of rest on your laurels and take a victory lap, but something makes you want to keep doing something new. I often think, i dont have another idea in my head, and im fine. If i dont have another idea, ive got plenty to do. And then you realize something is going on, like with the cartoons, and you go, i guess i did, i didnt even realize it. And i also really liked i guess there was a little bit of proving myself to myself by being able to come up with these little pinpoints of comedy. Reporter those pinpoints of comedy have become a book called a wealth of pigeons, but buyer beware one complaint it is called the wealth of pigeons, but there are no pigeons in it . Are there no pigeons . Ill tell you what we had a cartoon called a wealth of pigeons, and you would have this person in the park feeding these pigeons, and there would be these very wealthy pigeons at the feet, and that was the joke. And we thought, what an interesting title. Reporter the other thing not found in the book . I keep my politics to myself. Now were in an age where vitriol is extremely common. So if you if i, for example, tweet something the wrong way, then you get all of this vitriol, which i have no interest in. Reporter steve martin has never really addressed politics with his comedy. You know what i love about touring around with marty short . No paparazzi. Reporter his recent touring act with martin short steered mostly clear of current events. Martin short and i, when we do our show, we dont do politics in our show. Because if you do a political thing, one side goes boo and one goes yea, and theyre at war. Thats not why we are there. You paid this money, and i want you to go home and think, thats the best show ive seen. Were not there to teach anybody. They get enough of that. Reporter martin short and steve martin were introduced by an editor at the new yorker. My wife kept saying why dogs dont have the supreme intelligence they have intelligence, but not supreme intelligence, because they dont have a plausible thumb. And i thought, i can make a cartoon out of that. Reporter they worked over email, martin sending captions, and bliss sending drawings. If i write harry and i go, spaceship, he goes, ooh, i love drawing spaceship. Reporter and back and forth it went, at all hours. It is funny because sometimes ill get an email from steve with a cartoon idea, and, you know, i get up fairly early, too, 5 00, 6 00 a. M. , but sometimes yours will say 3 00 a. M. It makes me laugh because i thought, he woke up in the middle of the night with this idea. The only thing i would worry about is going back to sleep and waking up and then forgetting it. I had many ideas of how to make the note without waking my wife. First i had a childrens slate so i could write in the not without reporter are we talking etchasketch sketch . Like an etchasketch. And i accidentally pressed the button and erased it. And then i went to paper and it rattles. And then i went to my phone. Reporter one nice thing about cartooning, martin says, there are fewer people to please. What is the ultimate test, if it makes you laugh i think if it makes both of us laugh. Thats our test. If we like it. Yes. It is actually the first comedy that ive done where it didnt depend on the audience. Reporter some of the cartoons are unmistakably steve martin. This is impossible not to read in steves voice. Thats a good point. I think thats true. Oh, great, that guy you did mention the idea of doing an audio book for this . I wondered if it was possible to do an audio book where i would say, okay, there is a dog staring at a door, and the doog idog is thinking bark or stare . Always a tough decision. Bark or maybe stare . Maybe whimper . Maybe. Meanwhile, stare. Reporter but steve martin may not have time to record the audio book. He and bliss are already working on new material. By the way, i did have an idea for a cartoon with a pun in it. I usually will never send you puns. But im going to say it here, on television, so i can be ridiculed all over the nation. The cartoon is this an exterior of a college building, and it says college of psychic studies. And then there is a mother and a young woman, like an 18yearold student there, and theyre talking tot professor. And the mother says, how much is the intuition to go here . You can cut that video. Lee cowan serves up proof positive. Reporter kentucky limestone water, it is too good not to be used in good bourbon, which may be why there are two barrels of bourbon for every person who lives here. Although in the wake of the election, some of them are likely empty by now. But there is one tale about one bourbon told in the glow of an autumn evening that is less about whiskey and more about family and time, and not enough of either. Amen. Good job. Reporter this is the home of the van winkles, who are as private as they come. Cheers reporter if their name wasnt on the bottle, you would never know they crafted some of the most coveted bourbon in the world. Pappy van winkle. Do you remember the first time you had some . I do. It felt like if i poured it over a spoon, it would coat the spoon. Reporter thats a senior rider fo writer for espn, who thought the lure of the elusive pappy was worth a book. You get the sense the bourbon is a bypresident obyproduct ofthese people justg their lives. You think you know yourself pretty well until someone else starts writing about you. Reporter the current keeper of the va van winkle secret is Julian Van Winkle iii. I was younger than the whiskey i was serving when i started working for my dad. Reporter julian started young, too, fixing leaky barrels for his dad, who learned the craft from his dad, pappy himself. Pappy is so storied he has his own exhibit at the frazier history museum. He was dapper, with his vest on, smoking his cigars. A real salesman. His sister says julian is pappy made over. I mean, look at the label. Reporter pappy used wheat instead of wry in his bourbon recipe, which gave it a smoother, sweeter taste. His vow is still bolted to the distillery he cofounded on derby day. We make fine bourbon, it reads, at a profit if ke we can, or at a loss. But by the 60s, even the finest bourbons had gone out of favor. They were dinosaurs with a cork. It was like an old mans drink. My grandfather used to drink bourbon, but we sure dont drink that anymore. The last time you had bourbon was kentucky tavern in college. Reporter and yet there pappy sat, unwanted. Julians dad reluctantly sold the family distillery in 1972. Do you think he ever got over selling the distillery . No. That pretty much did him in. In the end, it was his life. He brought it home every night. It was a tough deal. Reporter he died of Prostate Cancer just a few years later. Did you feel a pressure to carry on the business or was it a desire, really . It was the only thing i knew how to do to earn a living, basically. Reporter so he start started over, from scratch, really. With a beatup truck and a a forlorned distillery. He honored something old even while the beverage world moved on to something new. Did you ever think about giving up . Nope. He just knew how to work hard. Reporter julians daughters, carrie, chanault, and louise triplets, in case you couldnt tell. He would come home with a bleeding nose or a broken ankle reporter no one paid pappy much mind until 1997, when the Beverage Testing Institute in chicago got their hands on pappy, and they give it 99 out of a hundred. Ever since, pappy has become one of the most soughtafter and expensive bourbons anywhere. It is so rare that it is a news event when the few bottles of pappy are released. I feel like ive got thegolden ticket. Reporter some stores have resorted to using a lottery to get to decide who gets to buy even one bottle. Did you always intend to make less than you could sell . [laughter] not a good, smart move. It would be nice to have more. And were making more, but the demand keeps going up, so i dont think well ever get there. Reporter no one knows when bourbon goes into a barrel if it will make the trip. If angels will drink more than their fair share as it evaporates over the decades. Every now and again youll see the word empty. Thats just a bad day. Reporter what is left isnt just a familys loved and cared for whiskey. What Wright Thompson discovered in writing his book was that the real spirit in a bottle of pappy isnt its rarity or price or, frankly, even its taste. A bottle of pappy is all about those who have gone before us. When you get it now, what you get is a son and a grandsons memory at work. I find that really powerful and moving. For you, this really isnt a book about bourbon at all, is it . It is barely a book about bourbon. It is a lot about what we owe our families and how we can pass the best of them along.
