The ballots are still being counted. Reporter chairman of the Republican Party in alameda county. How would you describe the roller coaster of emotions four years ago compared to now . This time there is a much higher chance that donald trump would win, so i was much more optimistic. Reporter and his reaction to President Trump laying the ground work to contest the election outcome . My reaction was, well, thats very typically the way our president attacks things. When theres something in his way, he tries to get through it, do something active to make things work out for him. Once the election is certified and decided, you know, our country has a tradition of peaceful transfers of power. And theres no indication, at all, that thats not going to happen. Reporter and then there is this perspective. For myself, im canadian, i dont care. Reporter and his one word for this election is being from another country, canada, he said interesting. In the east bay, juliette goodrich, kpix 5. We now go to kiet do getting reaction from local democrat os then nailbiting election, kiet . Reporter yeah, so if republicans are feeling uneasy, just know that democrats are feeling just the same way, perhaps even more so. But for dems it is a noxious stew of emotions. For the dems, its been four years plus one long night of waiting. A lot of hope. Reporter mary jo thought the margin would be a lot bigger, but the nearly 68 million voters picked President Trump has her shaking her head. What is it like to have that disappointment on top of the anxiety . It hurts my heart. There are so many people who want to continue the hate and the craziness. Theyre experiencing ptsd from 2016. Reporter an adjunct professor at san jose state, she says anxiety is thick on both sides, but the demes are especially guarded with their emotions. One, perhaps phrase, i can use to describe the democrats is cautiously nauseous. Everybody in our society has been through so much collective stress and trauma that i want to acknowledge its okay if youre not feel og cay. Reporter dr. Jennifer specializes in anxiety and trauma and says the stress of the pandemic and now unknown Election Results can make any voter feel cornered. But right now this isnt a fear that we can run from. Its a fear that we have to sit with and wait for results to come in so that we know how to feel next. And so when were in that place, we really do need to just turn to our own selfcare. Whats it like being a democrat in 2020 . Crazy and hectic. Reporter we found juan diaz, who put away his phone and ran a couple miles to calm his nerves. Anxiety . Yeah. Nervous . Little bit. Reporter how do you manage all that . Working out. Reporter sounds like youve got to formula figured out. I have to. Working out makes me happy. Kpix 5s Wilson Walker looking at how this election could change how we vote here in california, wilson . Reporter an election unlike any we have seen, ken, we have all heard that phrase so many times. This unique election that weve just all watched. It was bizarre. It was one of a kind, but are there any lessons from 2020 that we can take with us to the elections of the future . Usually we have this huge surge right at the end. And we didnt get the surge. We got a dropoff. Reporter that was one difference in 2020, the vote came in bulk in the first weeks of voting for a lot of people this year, the priority was getting it done early. We wanted to make sure its in. Reporter that might be one thing voters take with them from 2020. I think we learned that voters trust voting by mail. Trust receiving their ballot by mail and then returning it by a method of their choice. Yeah, on their own terms. And on their own timeline. I wanted to make sure it got here, and the only way to do it is do it yourself. Reporter then there are plenty of reasons that future elections will not look like 2020. I dont know. This election was so different. I think we have to have more elections before we can draw conclusions on this election. Reporter this election was driven in so many ways by the pandemic, some lessons may carry over, others may not, like the Election Results themselves, only time will tell. So i just think the nature of this election, the factors involved, this is a unique election in many ways, so i dont know what conclusions to draw other than the fact that people certainly were interested many participating and they did. Reporter one last note here from San Francisco city hall, there is an incredibly close supervisors race unfolding right now. As of yesterday, it was separated by just 43 votes. This is the district one race for supervisor. I asked the city today when we might get more numbers that would make that race a bit more clear. They have switched over from the inperson back to the mail order balloting system. Theyre going to go back to all the ballots stacking up in city hall tomorrow. They think they will get through those friday or saturday, and that might clear up any confusion left as to who has won the supervisors race here in San Francisco.
