Bay area voters weighing in on a number of important state and local ballot measures. We were out across all the bay area talking to voters and registrars. Many were determined to make their voices heard. There was high voter turn out and high voter excitement here at the mexican heritage plaz. There were long lines to vote all evening long. In fact when the polls finally closed at eight, there were about 50 to 60 people still in line. Those folks who were already in line were allowed to wait it out and go into the polls and vote. In fact the final vote was taken at 9 30 on tuesday night. So, we spoke to one of the folks who was one of the last people to vote on why it was so important to wait nearly three hours to vote. It was very hard. I tried to prepare myself mentally for about three months for this election. Im on medical leave for work. It was very difficult. Because i have family and friends that live here in the bay area, i decided to push through all the difficulties and come here to vote. Many of the people who were in line to vote at that last few hours said it was important for them to vote even though they had were juggling many things like jobs and school and family, kids, things like that. They did wait in line and many of them why first time voters. In san jose. Lynn ramirez. Looking live at San Francisco this admonishing. Lets go to Wilson Walker on how the campaign scene has changed in the castro district. This Election Night an incredible example of how much has changed in the last four years. The crowds of course limited by the pandemic. Compare that to what we saw four years ago on Election Night. 2016. It was a Victory Party when obama won. It was a Victory Party when clinton won. I thought itll be another Victory Party and now its another story all together. That night of course turned in to shock this year. Very different scene as people came out on a very tense night. Much more focused open the results, not a party vibe at all. Four years ago people were coming out and drinking pretty much to drink. Everybody was obviously expecting hillary to win. That wasnt the case. Tonight people are specifically here to sit town and watch whats happening the election. They are here to drink but the people that are currently in the establishment are here just to watch the election. As the night went on and it was clear there would be no result this neighborhood emptied out in a hurry by about ten. Virtually nobody out here left on the sidewalk patios. Kpixa. And a record vote by mail turn out. Election workers here at the county registrar are about to head home for the night. Its been a long day. Part of that is just because of the sheer number of ballots that they have seen come in. The registrar said they saw 290,000 ballots get counted by 8 00 on tuesday night. Election night and all of that was just from the vote by mail ballots. They said by the time this election is over they could see record turn out matching what they saw in 2008 where they could have almost 600,000 voters casting a ballot here. Our initial count for Election Night is 290,000 vote by mail ballots in our initial count. We have never had such a high turn out like that and results. Its a tribute to the people here that are working. If will still take a couple of days before officials are able to finish counting all of the ballots. They hope to get everybody certified by the end of this month. Everybody will be back in the office, bright and early wednesday morning. They are going to be here around 9 00 a. M. To keep going in terms of getting those vote by mail ballots counted and finishing all of the in person tallies. In martinez. Kpix5. Some malls and businesses across the bay area boarded up in preparation for possible unrest after the election when it does officially end.
