The president s own voters. He is calling the game at the end on end of the First Quarter and its extraordinary. We have never had a situation like this, in the country. The president is a steward of the american electoral system, as a member of it, he is a steward of the american system and he is trying to under mine it while the count is still going on. And the last time that we had a dispute that went to the court force Supreme Court as the president said, he thinks will go. You had two candidates who ultimately accepted the outcome of the courts. Ultimately accepted and said, we have to carry the weight of the office that john just described. To have the president jump that gun and make calls and frankly, norah, as gail was saying, there were a lot of things that were untrue. We can look at the map over your head and see the state of texas was called in his favor, he said it was not. Georgia and North Carolina remain toss ups on our map because of all the details you just laid out. We fairly called the state of florida in his favor, and noted his strong turnout among latinos and at the same time, we can fairly report that its too soon, because we cannot disenfranchise millions voters to call the race in pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin, georgia, and North Carolina. You know what . This is so disturbing, because of the message that it sends to his supporters. Had this is why people are boarding up the stores. Because he sends a message to his supporters, that when the true count comes on out, maybe it will be in his favor, maybe not. If its not in his favor, he is already planted the seed that this election is being stolen from him. And thats why this is such a dangerous thing that he has just done. He is trying to set expectations. What we got out of it, lets hope they dont find votes around 4 00 a. M. , thats what is going to happen. Voting is continuing through the night. In wisconsin and georgia, and its possible by the time people wake up later today, its closer or he has programmed lost his advantage. Im curious that the president feels fearful that he has to declare early. Is he not confident that once the ballots are counted that they will go in his favor . Why, why try and say this early . Is there a sense of fear in the Republican Party that ultimately it would be a good question for riens i he did want those called. He did want those counted in a state where they think those ballots may be in the president s favor. He does encourage the continued counting of ballots in the other states that we are talking about, that they may be in his favor or not. Thats where they are raising concern. This is the red mirage, the idea that certain states the day of vote would be counted first, all the other ballots that were cast earlier are being counted now and so it looks like he has a lead. But he may not retain that lead once the other ballots are counted. He is stepping out and saying im winning. Which in our wording its he has an edge. At the end of the day, once the votes are counted, all the mailin ballots may go to joe biden. He is putting out a false narrative that many will believe. That is what is troubling about it. And he was furthered by that, by people giving him a mouth piece to do that. Lets bring in david becker, our election law expert. And david, under what legal grounds could the president proceed as he says that he wants to . Well, none that i know of. You all just nailed it. Nearly everything that the president just said is false. There were, we know there were over 100 million early ballots cast in the election. But we have only counted about 130 million ballots so far and that doesnt quite add up with the election day turnout that we see we expected and saw. Theres 10s of millions of ballots. These are all ballots. Voting is still not going on. These ballots were cast already. They were cast under the laws of the states and they were cast by the deadline. They, some mail ballots may be coming in later that were postmarked. A lot of mail ballots came in today. But this process is still on going. And as was pointed out and this was a really great point. On the one hand, President Trump is arguing to stop the count of ballots in states like michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania and georgia. And on the other hand, arguing to continue to count balance on on thes in arizona because he thinks it will benefit him. When you humble yourself under the mighty hand of god, in due time he will exalt you. Hi, im joel osteen. Im excited about being with you every week. I hope youll tune in. Youll be inspired, youll be encouraged. Im looking forward to seeing you right here. You are fully loaded and completely equipped for the race thats been designed for you. [ horns honking ] hello, hello, hello. Hello. Hello. Good evening. Your patience is commendable. We knew it was going to go long. But who knew we were going to go in to maybe tomorrow morning, maybe even longer. But look, we feel good about where we are. We really do. Im here to tell you tonight we believe we are on track to win this election. Yes. We knew because of the unprecedented early vote and the mailin vote is going to take a while. We will have to be patient until the hard work of tallying the votes is finished and its not over until every vote is counted, every ballot is counted. We are feeling good. We are feeling good about where we are. We believe one of the nets suggested that we have already won arizona, but we are confident about arizona. Thats a turn around. We also just called it for minnesota. And we are still in a game in georgia. All although, that is not one we expected. We are feeling really good about wisconsin and michigan. And by the way, its going take time to count the votes, we are going to win pennsylvania. Yeah im talking to the folks in philly, allegheny, county, and scranton, they are encouraged by the turn i couldnt tell and what they see. Look, you know, we can know the results as early as tomorrow morning. But it may take a little longer as i have said all along. Its not my place or Donald Trumps place to declare who won the election. Its the decision of the American People. But im optimistic about this outcome. I want to thank everyone of you who came out and voted in the election. Democrats, congratulations here in delaware. And john, you are the gov, yeah, the whole team, man, you have done a great job, im grateful to the poll workers, to our volunteers our canvassers, everyone that participated in the democratic process and im grateful to all my supporters here and in delaware and across the nation. Welcome back to cbs news Election Night Head Quarters. Tonight, cbs news has learned that weeks before the election, u. S. Cyber command disrupted attempts to interfere with our election. We are here in black lives matter plaza. You can see several hundred people here, they are calling it an election result watch party. What dhs is looking for evidence of adversaries of trying to breech election system. So far, they have not seen evidence of it and fbi Head Quarters has their own command center set up as well. And we are told that agents are investigating robo calls that are urging voters to stay home. Theres no specific threat of violence. Thats what the sources are telling us. However, what we are seeing across the country is a heavy, heavy Police Presence in cities across america including here in washington, d. C. And right over here, you can see, these businesses all boarded up, norah, just in case. We have seen that heavy Police Presence as well. Thank you. And turning now to the coronavirus pandemic. The number of confirmed cases worldwide topped 47 million today and the global death toll is more than 1. 2 million. The u. S. Leads the world by far in both infections and deaths and many states are now seeing record numbers of new cases. Americans went to the polls today in the shadow of the pandemic. A reminder of whats at stake, anything workers and voters could touch, wiped down and sanitized. This, as dr. Debra birx is warning that the u. S. Could see more than 100,000 new covid19 cases per day. And tonight, a disturbing report on how easily the virus can spread. A cdc survey finding that over half of those living in the same household of a covid positive person became infected themselves within a week. As American Families consider holiday plans, what is your advice going in to thanksgiving . My advice is to have a virtual thanksgiving as much as possible, especially with our older and others with underlying medical conditions. We cannot have the usual indoor celebrations. Dr. David rich is president of mt. Sinai hospital that released a new study, showing covid19 is ten times deadlier than the swine flu pandemic. We are worried in the fall and winter we could have another surge of cases. We could find ourselves with a high death rate again in new york like we saw in the spring. The detecter of of the nih said today, if all americans wore masks more than 130,000 lives could be saved between thousand and march. Norah . Thank you. And theres still much more news ahead, covid strikes two nfl teams, including a hall of fame quarterback. And she was buried alive for four days after an earthquake. The incredible rescue of this 3yearold. All caught on camera. The nfl was hit today with several high profile covid cases. Hall of fame quarterback john elway, now the general manager o the Denver Broncos and joe ellis both have minor symptoms and dallas in earthquake ravaged turkey a 3yearold girl was rescued. Helmet camera video captured the rescue. The girl somehow survived for more than 90 hours buried alive. Oh. Just gives me the chills. Up next, no excuses for these voters. Why they traveled hours to make their voices heard. If we have learned anything this campaign, its that nothing can stop voters from doing their civic duty. Cash payment. Call Coventry Direct to learn more. We thought we had planned carefully for our retirement. But we quickly realized that we needed a way to supplement our income. Our friends sold their policy to help pay for their medical bills and that got me thinking. Maybe selling our policy could help with our retirement. Im skeptical, so i did some research and called Coventry Direct. They explained Life Insurance is a valuable asset that can be sold. We learned that we can sell all of our policy or keep part of it with no future payments, who knew . We sold our policy. Now we can relax and enjoy our retirement as we had planned. If you have one hundred thousand dollars or more of Life Insurance you may qualify to sell your policy. Dont cancel or let your policy lapse without finding out what its worth. Visit conventrydirect. Com to find out if you policy qualifies. Or call the number on your screen. Coventry direct, redefining insurance. Meet mildred madson, she is 94 and believes this election is the most important. So when her absentee ballot did not arrive in chicago. She persuaded her son to drive her 300 miles back to detroit so she can vote in person. Adam quiglers ballot did not reach him in maryland, so he left on a jet plane, flying Cross Country to tucson, where he was was still registered and where he voted today. And its been 100 years since women won the right to vote. And this 100 year old woman has had never missed an election. Poll workers brought a ballot to her in an assisted living facility in tennessee so her streak remains intact. We will be right back. My hopes is that the country my hopes is that the country will calm down. And that we dont have to think about politics on a daily basis. Recently we have had a big divide in the country. And i really just want everyone to come together again. Recently we have had a big divide in the country. And i really just want everyone to come together again. We can all come together and be one country. One group of americans. Make a choice that makes you proud, vote decency, fairness, and all that is right in the world, we have to vote for the america we dream of. Normalcy, hope the country gets back to normalcy. Vote like we never can did before. Every single vote matters. Thank you, everyone, have a good time, get out and vote. I feel like 2020 has been challenging and difficult for many of us. But on election day, we all get to come together and collectively show our power. I want to see a Better Change in the world for people that look like me. I think we are redefining what it means to be an american and i think its really important that go out and vote and make sure that your voices is counted. I have never missed a president ial voting since i been on the planet. Me being an immigrant, means everyone should vote. I was talking with a friend of mine and they were saying that americans they vote and then go for ice cream. Its such an american thing. This is my first time voting. So i was like so excited. I was like, okay, are we getting ice cream now . We all have to vote our conscious, we have to elevate our human consciousness and vote for the type of country that we want to see. The type of world we want. And so, that way, it, it infects the whole world. My biggest wish for the election is that we are able to heal the divisions between the Political Parties and accomplish something positive. Its a privilege to exercise our right to vote. I think that ultimately, its the people who speak. And so, as my shirt says, my voice is my vote. This is what we should be doing. You know, we should be coming out and voting. Its our right and i think, as citizens, its our responsibility. Im hoping that the American People are just going to voice their voices and just create the country in to the most awesome place on earth. I have the ballot and i remember like shaking as i was writing because like, wow, my vote counts. Good evening. Your patience is commendable we knew this was going to go long. But who knew we were going to go in to maybe tomorrow morning, maybe even longer. Welcome back to cbs news, election headquarters in times millions and millions people voted for us tonight and a very sad group of people are trying to disenfranchise that group of people. On our goal now is to ensure that the integrity for the good of the nation. This is a very big moment. This is a major fraud on our nation. We want the law to be used in a proper manner. So we will be going to the u. S. Supreme court. We want all voting to stop. We dont want them to find any ballots at 4 00 in the morning and add them to the list. Okay . Its, its a very sad. Its a very sad moment. To me, its a very sad moment. And we will win this, and as far as im concerned we already have. So, i just want to thank you. And i want to thank all of our support. I want to thank all of the people that worked with us. Well, the president of the United States castrating the facts of the Election Results that have been reported tonight. Falsely claiming that he has won the election and disenfranchising millions voters whos ballots have not been counted. Sadly, because of the raging pandemic and the failures of the administration to contain the pandemic. There has been a massive vote by mail operation and those votes have not yet been counted. And so, we at cbs news, can, are not projecting a winner in this president ial race. We will not disenfranchise the millions of voters in those battleground states and the hundreds of thousands in georgia whos votes have not been counted. Theres so much wrong with that statement, its hard to figure out where to begin. Count the ways. Former chief of staff Reince Priebus said that he would not gothat far. And he went further than that. The votes that are not being counted are votes that people cast themselves today on election day. And some of the votes that have not been counted are his own voters. He is calling the game at the end of the First Quarter. And its extraordinary. We have never we have never had a situation like this in the country. The president is a steward of the american electoral system as a member of it. He is a steward of the american system. And he is trying to under mine it while the count is still going on. Curious why the president feels fearful that he has to declare early as he is confident, once the ballots are counted, why try and say this early. Is there a sense of fear within the Republican Party that wouldnt this be a good question for reince . Interestingly and reince, when asked the question about the outstanding ballots in california. He wanted those calls. He may be in the president s favor. They are talking about where they may be in his favor or not. Yeah. Thats where they are raising questions. This is a red mirage that we heard people talking about. Certain states, and we are seeing it in michigan and wisconsin, for example, the day of vote would be counted first. All the other ballots that were cast early are being counted now. It looks like he a lead. And he may maintain the lead. And he may not once the other ballots are counted. On the one hand, President Trump is arguing to stop the count of validly cast ballots in states like wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania and georgia. And on the other end, arguing for continuing to count ballots in arizona, he thinks it will benefit him. We love the new apartment. The Natural Light is amazing. Hardwood floors. There is a bit of a clogging problem. clog dancing at least geico makes it easy to bundle our renters and car insurance. Yeah, helping us save us even more. For bundling made easy, go to geico. Com im chip reid in washington, thanks for staying with us. When all the votes are tallied it expected that 2020 will set a record for the most ballots ever cast in a u. S. Election. Expanded early voting and mailin ballots played a huge role, but there was an effort ever to open unconventional locations for voting. Such as sports venues. Two dozen arenas and stadiums opened their doors for voters. Kaitlyn huey burns took her cbs cameras through the turnstyle. Come on, are you ready to vote . Yes. This is not your average polling place. Fill this out for me. Reporter forget cramped community centers, Church Basements and school cafeterias, voting this year is getting a major league upgrade. With the pandemic straining resources to conduct elections, the professional sports teams stepped up to the plate to fill urgent need. Here in detroit, at the Pistons Performance center, you can vote early by dropping off your ballot in a secure drop box. And here in atlanta, state farm arena was the largest early voting location. Its a massive space that allows for social distancing. Its close to transportation and they offer free parking. Thats a win win for everyone. And they have loaned had they have loaned their people. So is, voters, you know, easy peasy for them. It was easiest thing ever. So happy. The attitude of the people is like if you went to a game. It been so long since we have been able to go to any games or anything. Its nice being in there and reminded me on good times. Everybody was almost like they were a voting theme because they all had on the shirts for voting. It was cute. Teams are involved in every aspect of the voting process. Charlotte residents have been able to vote during Carolina Panthers football games. Stadiums like detroits ford field will store ballots and election equipment for safe keeping in case of a recount. But the players were the driving force. Its always about more than basketball. Now that the season is over, the work is not. Lebron james has been at the forefront, recruiting over 10,000 people to serve as poll workers through his through his group. More than a vote. We want change, it does not end in november, it starts there. It starts there. What is going to be the affect of having the sports teams involved in the process . We needed trusted voices. People that broke through rhetoric and communicated to about how to vote and make sure their voices were heard. This is where the athletes and leaders played a Critical Role. Hearing the information from the local sports team is kind of like hearing it from a trusted source. Exactly, in a time when we need more trusted voices to provide Accurate Information about our election. It was a great example of leadership and really helped address a lot of our concerns as to how we were going to meet the extraordinary needs. On election day in cleveland, some residents will have a chance to cast their ballot. What safety precautions are you can we will do normal health protocol, and temperature checks and we will be social distant, it will be a mask environment and plus, we have an incredible amount of Square Footage that we can work with in an environment that is more expansive. The idea that youre going to be able to come and vote in your hometown arena, do you think it will have an affect in getting more people out to vote . We certainly hope so. Its a destination that everyone knows about. Making it safe, fun, dynamic. Who doesnt love coming to the field house. And another reason more the huge voter turnout, nationwide get out the vote campaigns. One of them, the unstoppable voters project. Focused on bringing arts to the ballot box. Michelle miller has the story. Reporter dancing mailboxes are not just for show. They are part of the national get out the vote campaign. Using forms of art in black or brown communities that can be targets of voter suppression. He is part of a left leaning nonprofit pushing for social change. We have worked in democracies all over the world, when we had the opportunity to work on this election, we jumped at the change. Reporter theres 11 different initiatives under this project, what was the criteria for choosing it . Reach, was the criteria. We didnt want stuff that regular people didnt get. But that it would give them valuable information that led to them voting. Reporter the initiatives are spread across 15 different states, including georgia. Hey, you, georgia, yeah, you. You got to make a plan to vote. Reporter a state historically known for under staffed polling places and voter purges. In North Carolina, theres a gerrymandering class that allows participants to create mock congressional aal district maps. Educating folks how the tactics can affect their representation. There seems to be a strategy in the methodology. So, yeah, a key part of the projects the they dont talk about the problem. They tell you how to solve it. And they address the problem. They change it in real life. Mia, the codistricter used the same method when she led a parade to the polls in north philadelphia last weekend. I looked at the list of early voting sites and i picked that we would enter the neighborhood and it had a history of lower voter turnout. Once again due to circumstances that are so often beyond the voters control. She believes bringing joy to the polls will change the narrative to voting. Celebrating the act of voting as opposed to chaftizing those who have yet to decide. So you are saying vote shaming does not do any good . I dont think it works in this moment in time. Theres a lot of outrage on the street. Its so impactful, its so impactful to have someone come to your neighborhood with a big brass band and clowns and say, we are throwing you a party. Thank you for sticking through this time. Thank you for your resilience, lets go vote together. We see you, heres the information. Im here for you. That was Michelle Miller reporting. The cbs overnight news will be right back. The coronavirus pandemic cast a long and deadly shadow. Basic measures like social distancing and the wearing of masks became political footballs. This is not the first mask battle the nation has faced. 100 years ago, there was a similar fight during the devastating spanish flu pandemic. Anthony mason has this after night news history lesson. Reporter in the fall of 1918, as americans across the country were celebrating victory in world war i, the masks on returning troops showed we were losing another war. Against the socalled spanish flu. A century a ago, masks were controversial. Yes, and for so many of the same reasons they are today. Nancy toms is a history professor at the State University of new york at stoney brook. At the worst, in 1918, how bad did the pandemic get . Really, really bad. We referred to it as the big one among historians of medicine. 675,000 americans would die. Nearly third of them in a single to. The red cross spread the slogan wear a mask, safe your life. And nurses began to make them for the public. We are looking at the two masks, gauze masks that were used in the 1918 pandemic here in california. They are in the collection of the oakland museum. And this is the associate cura curator. They are pretty transparent, so they were not of the ideal material, but they were better than nothing. This was the founder, lillian wall, played a Critical Role in organizing the Pandemic Response in new york city. Masks were never officially mandated on the east coast, nancy tom said, but other health rules were often aggressively enforced. There were spitting raids by police. There was a definite effort to up the ante in prosecuting the they called them sanitary infractions. The u. S. Outbreak had started on a kansas army base and the campaign to stop it was tied to the war effort. So wearing a mask became a patriotic gesture. Yes, if you refused to wear a mask, you could be called a slacker. What did that mean . Not quite like a traitor but somebody that was dragging their patriotic feet. San francisco was the first city to mandate masks. Yes. 10 of the population was infected. In just a day, the San Francisco chronicle reported that 100 people were charged with disturbing the peace, their punishment. Five days in prison or a fine. The chairman she was a sufferist she was a lawyer, she put out a poem asking fellow citizens who rejected the mask mandate. They argued the ordinance was unconstitutional. And that masks had not been proven effective. Some 2000 people turned out for a rally at the dreamland skate rink. Other cities would mandate masks, including, denver, seattle, oakland. Sacramento, and phoenix. They were met with resistance too. One major difference, it was not political then. There was disagreement between the various politician ans but the decision to mask or not to mask was never identified with a specific political party. I got it all from you im always pushing through i know well make it to the finish line i know youre waiting on the other side im like you ondemand glucose monitoring. Because theyre always on. Another lifechanging technology from abbott. So you dont wait for life. You live it. Finally this half hour, Steve Hartman caught up with a line of voters making an election day trip to the cemetery, to pay respect to the american hero, Susan B Anthony. How grateful they must be, those that flock here to just stand in her presence. It was really amazing. Like i was not just reading from a textbook anymore. I was with her. Emma came to the grave of Susan B Anthony for what has become a tradition. Showing the sufferagest in a tangible way that they are work was not in vein, after anthony died in 1906, her grave went mostly unnoticed physical four years ago when 10,000 people showed up to put their i voted stickers on her head stone. A gesture that came with you understand came with unintended consequences. This year, they covered her head stone with a plexiglass sleeve, allowing for layers of tributes for generations to come. She worked so hard her whole life. Sarah, brought her daughter clare a. She decide not even knowing if it would happen. We are not going have children that will take the next steps for us if we dont educate them now. Karen said we need to educate a lot of adults like her. Yes, i have not always been so passionate. Its like we took it for granted. I said to her, i cannot believe i was so is clueless for many parts of my life. And now, i am so passionate. During our day at the grave site. Thank you, Susan B Anthony. We saw that passion take many forms. From down right jubilation, to overwhelming emotion. The only constant was the way people put on their stickers. All of them with such tend erness as if rubbing linament in to the injustice and it was healing, which is why i believe voting should be a two step process. First a ballot and then a nod. To all those who made this sake who made this sacred right possible. On the road in rochester new york. Susan b anthony said failure is impossible and she was right. That is the overnight news for this wednesday, our coverage of the election continues on cbs this morning and throughout the day. Reporting from washington, im chip reid. It aint over until every vote is counted, every ballot is counted. Shortly after 2 00 a. M. , we heard this from President Trump. A series of baseless claims including a false declaration of victory. This is a fraud on the american public. This is an embarrassment to our country. We were getting ready to win this election. Frankly, we did win this election. So well be going to the u. S. Supreme court. We want all voting to stop. In a statement, joe bidens Campaign Manager called the president s comments outrageous, unprecedented and incorrect. To learn more, we are at the big board. I see five states there in the east. We are also talking nevada and arizona which could decide this thing. Walk us through where we are this morning. The story here, five states we still consider pure toss ups could go either way and in each of them uncounted ballots. Cast but not yet counted. In wisconsin, im going to show you that 89 of what we expect to be the total amount of ballots have been counted. Almost 400,000 still yet to be counted. The same thing in michigan. Number in, 80 . 1. 1 million still to be counted. And pennsylvania, show that. Only 75 counted, 1. 7 million. Thats the story. We are still waiting on officials to tally up everything. Before we go back to the desk, i want to know you the big map and how close the race is and highlight something that may not be clear. In nebraska, it looks like it is all red, however, there is one joe biden electoral vote coming out of that state. That is a rare state where they split. Arizona and nevada are leaning towards joe biden, not yet projected. And georgia, North Carolina, also razor clothe. You still see a potential path for joe biden . Oh, yes. There are still a lot of votes yet to be counted. A lot of them from democratic leaning counties but there will be republican and democratic votes here. Well see what they say. We should underscore given the president s comments, what we are witnessing is part of a normal and legal process. There are many evenings into next days when we wait to hear from Election Officials to find out their count. However, this time, it may not be the next day but the day after. Indeed. Thank you so much. For more on the president s response, lets go to ben tracy at the white house. Shortly after 2 00 a. M. , the president falsely claimed he had won. What else is the president saying . Good morning. The president did try to declare victory and said all voting should stop. Lets be clear. Voting has stopped and what states are doing is counting those ballots submitted legally and on time. There is nothing unusual about this. Prub is calling this fraud and an embarrassment and claiming his voters have been harmed. Millions and millions of people voted for us tonight. A very sad group of people is trying to disenfranchise that group of people. What the president is saying here is simply not true. It has been widely known it could take days or weeks to get final results in places such as pennsylvania. Some pennsylvania counties are not even said to begin counting mailin ballots until this morning. About 24 hours ago, the president said he would not declare victory because there was no reason to play games. Some governors are pushing back saying the president s claim of fraud has no basis and declaring victory was a bad decision. The remarks caught even one of his own Campaign Advisors by surprise not knowing what the president meant by saying he would take this to the Supreme Court. Any legal challenge would begin in state courts and would only start fighting these battles in swing states. Thank you. In delaware where former Vice President joe biden is. He spoke to voters at a socially distanced drivein event. Good to see you, gayle. The mood right now is cautious. Many supporters here are hopeful about the Vice President s chances as the ballots continue to be counted. They are taking cues from the campaign and the candidate himself. In Early Morning remarks, biden stressed that the race schbt over until every ballot is counted. He urged patience and feels good about where he is. He cited gains in arizona and expressed confidence about wisconsin and michigan. Last night, the biden Campaign Manager said in a statement that democratic process must and will continue in the process. If the president makes good on his threat to go to court to try and prevent proper tabulation of votes, they have legal teams to take care of the process. It is unclear when the former Vice President and his running mate Kamala Harris will address supporters again. Thank you. Georgia with 16 electoral votes is another crucial states. It is a toss up right now. With 92 in, President Trump is ahead by 2. 2 percentage points. Good morning. It has been a wild 11 hours. The state has voted republican since 1996, not this year. It is still too close to call. Hundreds of thousands of ballots still have to be counted. Likely contributing to the delay here, the increase ahead of election day compared to four years ago when President Trump won this state by five percentage points. The president is winning among white and male voters and joe biden winning among women. And biden overwhelmingly leading with black voters in the state. In fulton county, 72 of the votes go to biden. Results were delayed after a water pipe burst at the marina where it is one of the largest processing places in the county. At least seven georgia counties hours at the polls had to be extended because of technial issues. Even though President Trump has premature victory in georgia, the counting will go on this morning. Back to you. It says a lot that georgia is still in play. We also want to go to check on pennsylvania where we are unable to project a winner as we anticipated. The president is leading there but the governor said there is still more than 1 million mailin ballots to count and those are tending towards joe biden. In philadelphia where joe biden is hoping for a lot of mailin votes to be banked. Good morning to you. Good morning, tony. Thats right. Happening herein side the Pennsylvania Convention center. People counting the ballots. I want to take you inside so you can see what that looks like. We are told 150 election workers and city workers on special assignment up on the job. Theyll be doing this 24 7 counting those. A city official came out at 1 00 this morning and said officials are planning to give us further updates and at that time, they said the reporting system wont let them add anymore mailin ballot results until the inperson process. The secretary of state telling me there were more than 2. 5 million mailin ballots. 65 of those coming from democrats, so it really comes down to what the turnout was like on the ground for those who are supporting President Trump. Alagany county is another area where we were told the city of pittsburgh, they suspended the mailin ballot counting last night and said they would pick it back up around 10 00. We are assuming this was due to the number of people they had at the time to be able to count those. The governor acknowledging that this is the first time pennsylvania has dealt with that many mailin ballots because of a law passed just last year. The governor asking for people to remain patient and take a deep breath as they continue in an area that could end up playing a very crucial role in the election. Thank you. Ahead, well look at key races for the u. S. Senate. First, it is time to check your local weather. We have breaking down where we are right now. Nancy, good morning. Hows it looking . Well, weve got a very uncertain picture right now. We thought we were heading towards a very good shot at a democratic majority in the senate, but right now that path is narrowing. Take a look. Heres a reminder how we started the night. Republicans with a slim majority. 5347. Now take a look where things stand. Look at the right side of your screen. Thats the republican side of the senate chamber, a 3d view of it. You see couple of spots of blue there. Arizona looking like a likely pick up for democrats. Colorado. A pick up for democrats for sure, and now take a look at the few white discs on that righthand side. There are still four seats on the righthand side not decided and democrats no ed to win at least two or three to take control of the senate. Well look at those onebyone. First of all, theres North Carolina, also not called at the president ial level. About 94 of the vote in there and youve got thom tillis, the incumbent with a twopoint lead. We cant call that. Cunningham had a pretty good lead. He did. An example of democrats underperforming across the country looking a lot worse than the polls had showed them. We cant say four sure which way this race will go. Theres very important data still not in but thats a tough race. Far from a shooin for democrats. Go to maine where susan collins, despite polling, has a lead at this hour over sara gideon. Now, only about 66 of the vote has been counted there. They are slow and there is another problem in maine which is that they used something called ranked royce voting. No one gets to 50 pshgs susan calls at 49. 5 , nobody gets abofb all the ballot to augusta. Pushing people to the centers instead of the poll, keeps an independent from becoming a spoiler because they get 40 of the vote. And a candidate getting 4. 5 of the vote told people, hey, i dont win, put sara gideon as your second choice. A lot still up in the air. The two races in georgia. Like the president ial level, we cant make a call here yet. David perdue with a read, 91 of the vote in and the other georgia race definitely going to a runoff in january. The question, whether you got two races in georgia going to a runoff or one but either way, looks like im headed there for the holiday. More work to do, cordes. A phrase you used a couple times. Despite the polls using that a lot in the days ahead. Ooh. I want to point out something quickly. The democrat side of the ledger. Michigan a tossup for the incumbent gary peters. Democrats cant hold on to that seat, the path to majority closes. Tight at the senate level and the president ial level. Tighter than a lot of people thought. Nancy cordes, thank you very much. We take you to North Carolina and why it is too close to call. Youre watching a special edition of cbs this morning. Stay with us. And well take a close look at the kpap strategies of both president ial candidates and hear from former Campaign Managers robbie mook and Terry Sullivan and get their reaction to President Trumps premature claim of victory in several states that are still undecided. Im annemarie green with a look behind this mornings headlines. More than 22 million americans lost their jobs in march and april when the pandemic hit and some believe being unemployed is hurting their chances of finding a new place to work. Reporter scott spent 20 years working in the Hospitality Industry and laid off after the coronavirus shut business down. Finding a new job has been difficult. A survey from linkedin found 84 of americans believe there is a stigma with being unemployed and 57 think its impacting their abilitys getting hired. The vast majority of employers say they would hire somebody who is laid off. A stigma is something we put on ourselves that doesnt have to be there. Reporter he says people having trouble finding a job in their field may be unaware they have skills that can apply to other industries. One of my favorite examples is trfansferrable skills. Insurance companies. They try to hire bartenders. They have a history of telling stories. Reporter this bartender was let go from her job when the pnd hit. I decided to make the Career Change due to necessity. Reporter she became a realtor in santa fe, new mexico and now is starting to thrive. Reporting for cbs news, new york. Doctors say getting a flu shot is more important than ever during the pandemic. Especially for people over 65, because they are at high risk from serious complications from both viruses. More on the vaccine recommended for older adults. Reporter mary always gets a flu shot. My husband and i were in our 70s, and the older you get, the more inclined you are to have Underlying Health conditions that put you at a greater risk for complications from having the flu. Reporter shes receiving the highdose flu vaccine with four times more antigen than the regular shot. As we age our bodies have a bit more difficulty making that antibody response to regular dose vaccines. So if we expose people over the age of 65 to a higher dose of that antigen, theyre more likely to make a much more robust response. Reporter if you havent received your flu shot yet, now is the time. The centers for Disease Control and prevention recommends getting the vaccine by the end of october. Some pharmacies and doctors are reporting limited supplies of the highdose vaccine, or that its no longer in stock. But doctor kristen englin said older adults should not delay and take what shot available. Important to get the vaccine for the flu with whatever the pharmacy has. We dont want people waiting much longer. Reporter getting the vaccine reduces a risk of illness, hospitalization and death. Mary knows its especially important to get her flu shot in the middle of the pandemic. When so many things are not in our control its the easiest thing to do. See you at dennys. 6 30 a. M. Here in the east and at this time the president ial election is still too close to call. Right now jb leads President Trump in electoral votes. President trump prematurely declared victory in several states not decided overnight. Both candidates took time to address supporters as results came pouring in. For more on this were joined by cbs news political contributor es robbie mook and Terry Sullivan. Sorry. The prompters are very far away. Getting your opinion on polls which seem to come in underperforming but i want to start with terry. You sat in this position saying the president s position as votes were coming in was be cool, honey bunny. He appears to have gone in a different direction claiming victory over note. He did not get the message from samuel l. Jackson. Disappointing, not all that surprising. You know, the president he already claimed victory, terry. But are we surprised . They telegraphed this, told people he would do this long before votes were even cast on election day. I dont know that we should be surprised, that anyone should be anymore concerned than they are out of a lot of things that the president tweets or says. What do you think it means for the election process . I think everybodys got to stay patient. The president has devalued his words so much over the past four years that they shouldnt carry the same weight that if someone else said them. Its really unfortunate to say even his allies are saying that. Fellow rb republicans are sayi that as well. And preparations have been made. Exactly. Robbie, for democrats, what happened . Underperformance what we were expecting, basically everywhere. Down ballot. All the way up to the top. I mean, i am somewhat saying still about bidens prospects because of the states at play but the senate worked really hard. Hoping for pickups. Looks like eve an small net loss. Majority remains intact. The scenario we saw last night was a big republican turnout and i think a lot of these polls werent anticipating that, and i mean we all saw the same things. You know, for months, and it just wasnt right. What makes you optimistic still for joe biden . If he wins georgia, that really opens up opportunities for him. He can lose some states in the midwest. Even lose nevada as long as he wins michigan or pennsylvania. So winning georgia is really a game changer. The pennsylvania numbers, a surprise in this, early numbers. What do you see in pennsylvania . Look, the problem were havingennsylvania and michigan and wisconsin. Hard to see whos underperforming, whos overperformi overperforming. We just need more ballots to get counted. Hard to tell. Really close in all of them and makes me even more nervous saying i can read this into that because it might just be so close Little Things can tip the balance. Back to terrys words of patience. Looks like republicans will keep the senate. Are those president ial coattails in effect or just people didnt care for the democratic candidate . I think well, or like the republican candidates. That the republicans campaigns matter, and at the end of the day, there was really strong republican campaigns. Everyone wrote Lindsey Graham off. He won by double digits last night and had a great campaign. Scott hall tv guide, amazing tv. Joni ernsta great team, did great things, ran really good Senate Campaigns and that had a lot to do with it. I think the one clear result from last night, and this is very clear, is the big loser are pollsters. Never had more data available, and never has it been more wrong. How do people keep confidence in polling after this . You dont. I mean, adjustments made after 2016, but throughout this cycle we were saying its a stable race. You know, donald trump wasnt winning any polls in some of these states and now in a very tight situation where he might come out on top on the only poll that matters, the election day poll. May have been stable. Just stably wrong. Thats the thing. This may have been may not have been a surge but where the race has always been for the past year. Robbie, a lot of pending lawsuits already. Hows the Biden Campaign preparing for this . Yeah. I mean, they have both sides have a very big effort in place. Lots of lawyers. Lots of planning. Lots of strategies in the drawer. I think bidens doing the right thing by urging caution, urging the votes to get counted. Again, i believe hes ahead in this. He just needs to let the results come out. Yeah. And each side gets a vote, so to speak. One side can go in and litigating, you have to react to that, but then each Campaign Needs to make its own choice when to go in and litigate. Youll see a bit of a game of chicken and that often depends whos winning or losing. Campaigns losing want to contest results. Campaigns winning want to let the votes play out. Both sides have a decent case looking at their own data. Feeling pretty good. Talking about twitter taking the president to cast. Called his tweet disputed and misleading saying we are big but theyre trying to steal the election. What do you think the president is trying to declare here . Pretty obvious. Very obvious. Look, a bluff. You know . Fake it until you make it. The last time we had an election go to the courts for an outcome was 2000. Supreme court came down with a decision and al gore said quite famously, i dont agree with the decision but i accept it. Can you imagine donald trump speaking similar words . I cant. You know, and that was i think a very different situation, a different time. It was very targeted to one place. And i think part of it started off with al gore famously conceding. Like that started with al gore conceding that election and then taking it back. A different race. What, if anything, has joe biden learned from that, do you think . Yeah. I think hold tight. Wait until every vote is counted because i think al gore jumped the gun, didnt realize how close it was going to get. And part of it, we just got to see the actual result. We try to model everything out and anticipate but the votes are cast. Get them counted, on the table and see where we really are, but that requires patience and thats hard t. Is hard. You guys make it easier. Yes true. You do. Yes, you do. Robbie mook and Terry Sullivans, thank you very much. And possible paths to 270 electoral votes. The magic number. First, time for a check of your local weather. Wild thing, you make my heart sing wild thing i. Think i. You know what i think . I think you owe us 48. 50. Wild thing. If you ride, you get it. Geico motorcycle. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more. Welcome back to cbs news election headquarters, elections and surveys director anthony is with us again looking at where things stand. Nevada will not have new information until thursday. Stick where it is. Move east to georgia where people were counting through the night. Georgia, also, rate it as a tossup, right now the vote count, donald trump, 2. 3 million. Joe biden 2. 2 million. Its really close. Wow really close. Heres the thing, tony. I want to show everybody how many ballots there are left to count. These have been cast, but Elections Officials havent put out the counts, showed us how they voted yet. Thats 410,000 statewide. Okay . Almost all. And underscore less than 100,000 votes separates the two candidates and youve got 400,000, or about 100,000 separates the two candidates and 400,000 yet to the calculated in. Exactly. Exactly. So the other thing id point out here is, all night we were watching metro atlanta. This is a democratictrending area where in order to win the state joe biden would have to do well. Pointing at a couple counties like decekalb and show you stil 82,000 ballots left to count there and a couple other counties, too, and do the same thing. Still a few places you might see a lot more votes still come in. 80 . 107,000. It youre joe biden youre look the a that, i know theyre democratic areas. The other big thing everybody should remember from last night is this giant difference between the people who voted early and cast ballots in mail and the people who voted on election day. On election day, republicans swamped democrats. Big margins for trump. So if joe biden picked up a georgia, that would give him wiggle room in the northern part of the country. Another state that he could pick up which could give him wiggle room would are North Carolina. Another tossup. Where are we in North Carolina . Right. In North Carolina a similar situation. Less than 100,000 separating them. Exactly. Look at the outstanding vote, and 292,000 votes outstanding. Wow. Gives you an inside look at why and how we cant project this race, but it also shows you that this is very typical. Just sometimes races arent close enough for people to notice that ballot counting goes on for days sometimes weeks, in so many races. Then eventually Elections Officials get through them all and make their final report. Before we let you go, lets go up north to what had been the blue wall which donald trump crumbled in 2016 and joe biden is trying to rebuild. Got minnesota, talk about michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania. Still a path for donald trump in all of these. As of last night, look, yes. Joe biden is ahead marginally in the count in wisconsin. Ah, close. And razor close. Wow. Razor close. Some places still with outstanding ballots. Well wait and see if they come in more and the big question again is, we think most of these are mail and early votes, and if they are, they could favor joe biden. This is tighter than you expected in wisconsin . It is tighter. Joe biden had a lead in this state coming in on polling and what closed the gap, the strong republican turnout. Were talking about a couple points here at least between the polling and the election day and republicans really outperformed. They really turned out their numbers. Always, always whenever we say it comes down to turnout but here is a clear example. I want to put pennsylvania to the side a moment because there are a million votes still being counted we dont know what the outcome would be. Michigan. Joe biden was strongly favored. He is now down in the raw count. Got a somewhat similar situation. 1. 1 million ballots still outstanding. Not projecting it. Again, this is a place where he probably will after the polling. Gayle king and Tony Dokoupil shift and we appreciate it. Gail and anthony, back to you. Listen, i know how i feel. I cant imagine how you feel. Standing in the upright position. Bravo to you. Thank you. As you just heardics the battleground state of North Carolina still too close to call even though about 95 of the vote is in, where the vote count there stands right now but we are still waiting for much of the absentee vote to come in. About 117,000 absentee ballots have yet to be returned. Kris van cleave is in raleigh with more on that part of the story. Kris, good morning. Reporter good morning, gayle. We dont know how many of the outstanding ballots will be returned if postmarked by yesterday they dont have to arrive until the 12th to be counted. So theres several more days where some of these could come in. As it stands right now, the president is sitting on about a 77,000 vote lead. He has, as you know, has claimed victory here. Were not ready to call it yet. Its about, a little over a point and a half here. Tighter margins than we saw in 201. In fact, several races here in North Carolina are extremely close. A very close election here in the tar heels state. It has not gone blue since 2008. Only gone blue twice in the last 50 years. The state saw record turnout nearly 5. 5 million votes cast, both candidates earning hundreds of thousands more votes than we saw in 2016. According to the exit polls North Carolina democrats cared the most having a leader to unite the country and showed good judgment. Republicans fabered somebody who they saw as a strong leader. Trump voters we talked to were adamant the president was going to win here. They felt that the polls were wrong, and we know that the polls should eed it close. Turned out toish a razorthin situation as it stands now and democrats hoping not only to pick up 15 electoral votes but flip a senate seat in what has been the most Expensive Senate race this cycle. Right now the democrats have ground to make up if theyre going to do that. Anthony . All right, kris, thank you. Going to michigan now. Joe biden hopes to flip michigan blue after President Trumps stunningly close victory there in 2016. We have about 80 of the vote tabulated and still unable to project a winner in michigan. President trump won by just 11,000 votes four years ago. Janet shamlian is in detroit. Janet, how important is michigan to both candidates at this point . Reporter anthony, good morning to you. It is critical for both candidates. It provide as path to the white house for both candidates. However, the michigan secretary of state is cautioning that we will not have results here until later today potentially late tonight. As anthony was mentioning, more than 1. 1 million votes outstanding in this state. Joe biden is counting on a significant number of votes. Right here in detroit, that is wayne county going his way. The area generally leans blue and provides hundreds of thousands of votes to his win column. Theres about a half million absentee ballots just in wayne county that have yet to be tabulated. According to the exit polls more than two 24erthirds of people responding cared most about the economy choosing a candidate. Coronavirus virus followed with just under 20 . Overall those surveyed believed biden would handle both the pandemic and the economy better. Bidens campaign is strongly hoping that it will be picking up female and minority votes, and from what we know from exit polling, President Trump is earning majority of the white male vote. Now, President Trumps 2016 win here in michigan was the first republican in this state since 1988, and earlier today at the white house, the president vowed to go to the Supreme Court and ask them to stop counting ballots in a state he believes that he has already won. However, just after that michigans governor and the secretary of state vowed that every vote in michigan would be counted. Anthony . All right, janet, thank.
