As Connor Knighton will explain. Reporter the past few months, bears have been packing on the pounds, getting are there get r their selfimposed quarantine. The first time i got to see them during quarantine, they were so cool. Reporter scientists study the mystery of hibernation. Underneath all of that fat may be everything from diabetes tools to space travel. A long winters nap ahead on sunday morning. Pauley from there it is on to one of the great comic legends of all time. And his name is bob newhart. And he is talking this morning with our Ben Mankiewicz. Hello . Bob newhart had not one, but two, hit tv shows named for him. Not bad for an accountant. If i had been with enron, they would have still been in business. The government would never have figured out my books. Reporter laughs with the trailblazing comedian later on sunday. [laughter] pauley and then we consider a question over mind over matters, those matters being the daily challenges of living with covid and the emotional toll it is taking. Susan spencer cuts the experts. Reporter from hoarding Hand Sanitizer to living in lockdown, the battle for our physical health is doing a number on our Mental Health. It is not few exaggerated to say this could be a second pandemic. A Mental Health pandemic . Reporter yeah. Thats what a lot of us are expecting. All over the world. Reporter feeling a little anxious lately . Ahead on sunday. Pauley david pogue watches the big move chess has made towards crowd appeal. Lee cowan looks back on the life of sean connery. The very first james bond in the movies. Mo rocca remembers a first lady whom many consider first among equals. Faith salie meets a voter who puts noshows to shame. Plus Major Garrett and John Dickerson on the campaigns final days. Along with Steve Hartman and more on this sunday, the 1st of novembe november 2020. Well be back in a moment. Pauley much of we humans may welcome any chance to sleep in. Were practically insomniacs compared to animals that hibernate. It is a curious phenomenon that is beginning to yield some of its secrets. Here is our Connor Knighton. Reporter for a bear, brooks falls at Katmai National park in alaska is like one of those Conveyor Belt sushi restaurants. Diners are treated to an Endless Supply of salmon. This summer the alpha of omega3consumption was a bear known at 737, the winner of the back bear week contest. Jumbo jetsized 747 is estimateed to way 1400 pounds. Of course, all of those pounds serve a purpose. Bears have an enormous appetite. And they will eat and eat and eat to gain that fat mass to survived hibernation. Reporter heiko jansen is a professor of neuroscience at Washington State university, home to the countrys only dedicated Bear Research center. Located in pullman, washington, the center houses 11 grizzlies, and these big mammals are helping scientists unlock some of hibernations mysteries. First, lets clear up the hibernation of misconception. Im getting awfully sleepy. Reporter the cartoon hibernation involves bears going to sleep in november and waking up for the first time in spring. I set the alarm clock for, like, spring. Reporter but thats not quite what happens. They actually dont sleep all of the time. They have a fairly regular sleepwake pattern. They may get up and stretch a little bit. Reporter in fact, pregnant females give birth and nurse their cubs during hibernation. The more fat the mom puts on going into the den, the bigger the cubs and the more she can produce. Reporter but what scientists dont understand is how bears can get so heavy and stay relatively healthy. Bears eat a ton, get fat, and dont get diabetes. They exhibit some of the signs that type 2 diabetics exhibit, but all of that reverses itself. Reporter in the lab, fat cells are analyzed for clues as how the bears beet diabetes. The answers could have implications far beyond the bear world. Hopefully what ill do wll figure out would works and help humans as well. Reporter a treatment for type 2 diabetes may be hiding in hibernation. If we humans can lower our own Metabolic Rate the same way that bears do, well, then the skies would no longer be as limiting. This is the first time that men have been put into hibernation before departure. Reporter in 2001, a space odyssey, some of the crew goes into hibernation to conserve food and water en route to jupiter. Even lowering our Metabolic Rates by a huge percentage point would have a huge benefit to the amount of stuff you simply had to carry on a spacecraft. Reporter although so much snoozing would present its own set of challenges. Humans laying down for six months would lose a tremendous amount of bone. But bears arent losing bone massmen mass. Theyre not becoming osteoporotic, like humans. Reporter why . Nobody really knows. The center opened in 1986 to help answer those types of questions. The grizzlies either come from the greater yellowstone region, or they were born onsite. Since the researchers control the diet, they start shrinking the portions in the fall to mimic what would be happening in the wild. It is usually a mix of kibble and apples with one occasional treat. They would do almost anything for a large bowl of honey. Reporter i cant believe that is the bear stereotype that is true. The winnie the pooh thing. Thats true, they love honey. Here you go. Reporter for a few squirts of honey, the bears kick out their paws for a final prehibernation blood draw. Good bear. Reporter theyll be examined again in april, but for the next several months, it is pretty hands off. Theyll be monitored on camera while they laze around. With so much uncertainty in our world, it is hard not to be a little envious of hibernateds. For humans, it is a challenging winter, but for the bears, it will be a blur. They essentially get to skip it all, curled up in their dens, awaiting a sunnier spring. On of your mouths surfaces colgate total. Antibacterial protection for a healthier mouth. Than Rheumatoid Arthritis. When considering another treatment, ask about xeljanz. A pill for adults with moderate to severe Rheumatoid Arthritis when methotrexate has not helped enough. Xeljanz can help relieve joint pain and swelling, stiffness, and helps stop further joint damage, even without methotrexate. Xeljanz can lower your ability to fight infections. Before and during treatment, your doctor should check for infections, like tb and do blood tests. Tell your doctor if youve had hepatitis b or c, have flulike symptoms, or are prone to infections. Serious, sometimes fatal infections, cancers including lymphoma, and blood clots have happened. Taking a higher than recommended dose of xeljanz for ra may increase risk of death. Tears in the stomach or intestines and serious allergic reactions have happened. Dont let another morning go by without asking your doctor about the pill first prescribed for ra more than seven years ago. Xeljanz. An herbal stress reliever ashwagandha, that helps you turn the stressed life. Into your best life. Stress less and live more. With stressballs. Pauley it is the challenge of our covid times how to assert your mind over matters of health and work and family and more. Not surprisingly, it is a challenge that is stressing a lot of us out. As Susan Spencer can tell us. Reporter when it comes to wearing a mask, seattle writer Wendy Sparrow was way ahead of the curve. Ive been wearing a mask during flu season for and allergy season, for, like, years. And people would look at me when i would walk into a store and they would stare at me. Reporter masks and Hand Sanitizer is parte of sparrows lifelong battle with o. C. D. , or obsessivecompulsive disorder. I plan for all of the worst things that could happen. I have firstaid kits everywhere. I have, like, multiple ones in my house. Reporter firstaid kits . Yes, firstaid kits. Somebody could get their head lobbed off, and i probably could get it back on with the firstaid kits i have around. Reporter you describe yourself as suffering from something you call contamination phobia. Can you explain what that is . As far as germs go, up until i see somebody sneeze or something, im usually okay with it. I dont go to hazmat levels of cleaning unless somebody is sick, and then i kind of lose my mind. Reporter she has been accused of overreacting for as long as she can remember until covid19 came along. One of my friends online commented to me the other day, and she goes, how does it feel to have maskwearing normalized finally . And im, like, im not going to get stared at anymore. Reporter but as gratifying as you think that might be, she says the pandemic has actually made her o. C. D. Worse. It is much harder to control symptoms and habits and stuff like that when you are genuinely, you know, at risk for these things. How do you tell yourself, no, thats too much Hand Sanitizer, when at this point there is no such thing as too much Hand Sanitizer. Were in the midst of a Health Epidemic right now, and i only think it is going to get worse. Reporter you dont think the worst is over . No, not at all. I think the worst is yet to come in terms of Mental Health. There is going to be tremendous grief and mourning for all the lost people and the lost opportunities and the lost dreams and hopes that people had. Reporter she says the pandemic is aggravating Mental Illness among those already battling it, and taking a toll on the rest of us, too. Anxiety always rises in the face of uncertainty. And were living in very uncertain times. Reporter more than half of American Adults say theyre Mental Health has suffered because of the pandemic. Prescriptions for antidepressants shot up 14 after the initial outbreak. You could argue that given all that is going on, having a Mental Health issue is just a normal reaction. Absolutely. So what we really have to be careful of, when were talking about Mental Health during this time, is what is an actual anxiety or depressive disorder, and what is just a stress response that makes sense given how uncertain the world feels. Reporter atlanta psychiatrist dr. Sarah vinson says her days are packed with returning patients and firsttimers, concerned there is something seriously wrong. How do you know when you should really worry about it . A big thing that differentiates typical stress versus a disorder, there is actually impairment. Is this getting in your way . Is it making it difficult or impossible, even, for you to do your work, fulfill your responsibilities in your household, sleep at night . And when that continues for weeks at a time, you need to think maybe this is more than just a stress response. Reporter dr. Vinson splits her time between private practice and a public clinic, where, unfortunately, business is booming. If i wanted to try to make an appointment, how long would it take me . Our wait list at the county clinic is around three or four weeks. Reporter so if someone is having a serious Mental Health issue, it is going to take weeks to see anybody . Unless they goat t go to an urgent care or that sort of thing because the people we have are already taking up our time. Reporter across the country, long waits are standard fair, do mostly, dr. Pender, due to a lack of money and a chronic short of supplies. Mental Health Clinics have been underfunded for a long time and theyre still underfunded. Reporter one recent study found more than half have closed programs due to covid19. While 65 have had to reschedule or turn away patients, all of which affects some groups more than others. How do you evaluate the entire Mental Health system in terms of meeting this challenge for people of color . I would definitely probably give it a d minus, if not an f. Reporter thats why retired California School teacher, valeria andrews, recently launched a nonprofit for women of color facing Mental Health challenges. She has battled anxiety and o. C. D. Her whole life, but didnt get a diagnosis until she was well past 50. Do you have a sense of what treatment is available in the Community Today . Very little. There is no availability, if you dont have insurance. And for most people it is too expensive, or there is too much negativity around it. There are not enough people that look like them to talk to. So all of those factors come into play. Reporter like Wendy Sparrow, andrews says the pandemic has aggravated her o. C. D. But even so, after the death of george floyd, she managed to take a very big step. I went to my first march, a black lives matter march. Reporter but your o. C. D. Centers around a fear of getting sick. In a protest, youre with hundreds thousands of people, and i would have thought that would have been terrifying. It really was. I did double mask, double gloves, carried my Hand Sanitizer with me. My daughter, who is a nurse, was with me. So we didnt stay long, but it was important enough to get out there and have my voice heard. Reporter an inspirational note to which all of us in this covid19 struggle now can relate. There is always hope. And i think the world needs to feel that right now, but also people with Mental Health issues, even if youre just, like, thinking 2021, please get here already. Pauley if youve ever considered taking up chess, now is the time to make your move. David pogue shows us why. Reporter the pandemic reduced most professional sports to shadows of their former selves. But it has done wonders for one game, maybe the last one you would ever guess. Its chess. A boom is taking place in chess like we have never seen, maybe since the Bobby Fischer days. And it is happening all because the pandemic has driven people indoors, and theyre looking for something incredible, constructive, educational to do. Reporter Maurice Ashley is a chess grandmaster and a commentator for chess championships. People have this misconception that it is slow, it takes a long time, it is boring, why would you want to watch grass grow. Reporter yeah. But chess is not like that well, not all of the time, anyway. No time soon. Reporter it is definitely not like that in new york citys Washington Square park, where you can play a pickup game for five bucks, with oldtimers like David Solomon reed. He has been playing here for 40 years. When you guys go back and do the editing, i want the heading to be im the last lion of washington scare park. The last. Reporter if there is a boom in chess, theyre not seeing it here. The players just arent getting the same traffic they once did. Before the pandemic, but now it is, like, slow because a lot of tourists are not allowed to come here, as far as the flights. Reporter now it is what on a good day . 200, 250 one day. Reporter where is the boom . You probably saw this coming it is online. By june 2020, the number of people joining chess. Com had tripled from the following year. I can see my friends looking for that competitive vice to continue in my life. And i found that through chess. Reporter one of the new members was graduate student richard hamilton. Youre playing in countries that the average american may not be up. Reporter but the chess explosion isnt just people playing it is the most Beautiful Mate ive ever seen. Reporter it is also people watching. Ooh, ooh chess has been around for over a thousand years, and people are starting to watch at explosive rates now. Reporter as a teenager, Alexandra Botez won Six National Titles in both canada and the u. S. Today at 25, she makes a sixfigure income playing chess live on twitch, a website where you watch entertaining gamers play video games. And g3. Reporter but in the pandemic, chess is one of twitchs Fastest Growing spectator sports. It is very high energy. Youre yelling when you lose a piece, youre excited when you win. Sometimes people will put bets on the line. It is much more interactive. You feel like youre actually watching a kind of sport. Reporter at one point you threatened to shave your eyebrows. I need to get 2300 because this aint going to be a good look. I said if i didnt reach a certain rating point, i would shave off my eyebrows. It was very motivating. [screaming] reporter she got to keep her eyebrows. Welcome, everybody. I hope youre all ready to behave because weve got cbs sunday morning filming things. Reporter and she as amassed a huge following of fans. About 200,000 people a day log on to watch her play chess. Thank you so much, del, for the silence. Reporter a lot of them pay 5 a month to support her channel. Becoming an online chess star requires more than just chess chops. You have to multitask like crazy, trash talk, you joke for six to eight hours at a time. Its not traditional chess. The ones who are the best are also incredible at chess and incredible at entertaining. Reporter on one hand, Maurice Ashley can wait for the return of chess tournaments played in person. Chess players want to sit across the board. They want to see the player theyre playing. They want to shake hands and go after the game and hang out and talk about what fun that was, maybe go over the game, where they made mistakes and maybe have a brewski. Reporter but over all, he is thrilled to see how the internet has brought this ancient game to millions of new fans. This is not a pandemic bubble that is going to pop . Oh, no. Pauley of all of americas first ladies, Eleanor Roosevelt was truly a first among equals, charting her own distinctive course both during and after her white house years. Mo rocca has her story. Ladies and gentlemen, the most admired woman of our times, mrs. Eleanor roosevelt. Reporter in 1916, the chairman of the board asked the first lady of the world if she had one word of encouragement for viewers of his Frank Sinatra abc special. That one word would be hope. Just hope . Yes. Its the most neglected word in our language. Reporter yes, hope, high hopes. Those high, apple pie in the sky hopes. Reporter propelled roosevelt to become a globetrotting humanitarian. Man must have freedom in which to develop his full stature. Reporter and for 12years, americas first lady emphasis on first. She registered herself over and over again as homemaker reporter are you serious . Or housewife. She thought you were a genius if you can make a home anywhere you were. Reporter feeling at home with herself was a lifelong journey for Eleanor Roosevelt. She was born in 1884 to material wealth and emotional scars century. Scarcity. She wasnt allowedo show fear or cry. Reporter she adored her father, the brother of future president teddy roosevelt, but he struggled with addiction. Her mother, said to be the second most beautiful woman in new york, openly mocked eleanor for her serious demeanor, calling the young girl granny. It was a way of saying not just you look old and sour, you look like something i dont want to be. It was a real ask excommunication. Reporter what did that do to eleanor . She would say i wanted to shrink into the floor boards. Reporter o orphaned at the age of 19, she was engaged to her fifth cousin, Franklin Delano roosevelt. Meeting eleanor was the moment where he could say to himself, by god, im marrying that woman and im going to be president of the United States myself. Reporter the marriage would become one of historys great political partnerships. She immediately feels useful. Useful, and therefore loved. I think the great disconnect for them was in discovering they could only be useful to each other, but might not make each other happy as intimates. Reporter although they would have six children, franklin would find romantic love with other women. Eleanor would seek ipt intimacy with both men and women. Throughout eleanors life, she channelled her own hunger for affection into compassion and service to others. She was a noticer of other people who didnt like to be noticed herself. She would much prefer the attention to be on you than on her. Reporter during world war i, while franklin served assistant secretary of the navy, eleanor visited Arlington National cemetery daily to bear witness to the burials of fallen american soldiers. If nobody turned up, she felt absolutely it was her duty to stand by that grave and to observe everything and listen to taps. [taps] i was just thinking, i began every morning, for a number of years when i was writing this book, listening to taps. And taps is sort of the Eleanor Roosevelt anthem because in it she was able to connect, through sorrow and pain, to the connect, in its most sorrow full and painful moments. Reporter loss . It is what her life was primarily based on. Reporter by the time franklin was elected president , he had been stricken by polio. Eleanor became his eyes and ears, going right to the source of the countrys pain during the depression. Meeting miners in appalacia, challenging southern democrats to support antilynching legislation. And during world war ii, visiting internment camps where japaneseamericans were imprisoned simply because of their race. She brought back the truth. He always trusted she would give the truth that others might not or they may sugar coat. Reporter the first lady was often alone at the wheel, driving herself across country. People looked into her eyes and saw somebody who was listening to them and who was somehow seeing them in ways that maybe they had never been seen. She was letting you know that your government belonged to you, but, more importantly, you belonged to your government, and you had something to do. Democracy was a twoway street. Reporter after franklin died, eleanor spent more time in this Stone Cottage at valkill, new york, her longtime sanctuary. But she never retired. In 1959 she hosted her own Public Television show. Id like to know what your opinion is on that question. Reporter now in her 70s, she held court with younger leaders, like senator john f. Kennedy. There are 17 million americans who have a sub standard diet. Reporter it just so happens that David Michaelis mother worked on the program, and a 4yearold david once met mrs. Roosevelt. I think it comes out of the fearlessness. There is a lack of fear of being who you are so you can be that person for millions of people. Reporter Eleanor Roosevelt died on november 7, 1d by millions the world over. A once uncertain child of privilege turned global champion of the dispossessed. I think like most people in the country, i went to bed with a scene on my tv showing the vote count in florida. I woke up the next morning and turned on my tv and realized that nothing had changed and we still didnt have a president. Reporter moments later, tallahassee attorney Barry Richard got a call from george w. Bushs team, a lawsuit was filed in palm beach county, and bush needed a lawyer. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, i have with me Barry Richard of tallahassee, florida. If we dont figure out the count right on this, were a banana republic. This year several states will count millions more mailin ballots after november 3rd, and that could delay final results for a day or more. Already in excess of 400 lawsuits have been filed about election rules. Unlike in 2000, lawyers for both compaigns stand ready to fight over any perceived infraction. But for former bush attorney Barry Richard, that is not the biggest difference he sees between this years election and the contest between george w. Bush and al gore. There never even was a consideration for a candidate to say he wouldnt accept the ultimate results once they were known. We want to make sure that the election is honest. Im not sure that it can be. Reporter donald trump, as candidate and now president , has repeatedly refused to say if he would accept the results of an election he did not win. President trump because the only way were going to lose this election is if the election is rigged. Remember that. Reporter back in 2000, just a day after the Supreme Courts ruling it is five weeks, but it seems we have a president. Reporter al gore addressed the nation. Just moments ago, i spoke with george w. Bush and congratulated him on becoming the 43rd president of the United States. And i promised him i wouldnt call him back this time. Let there be no doubt, while i strongly disagree with the courts decision, i accept it. I think it really did put to rest what had been, at that point, the most tumultuous election. Reporter Doris Kearns Goodwin says whether we know the winner on Election Night four more years reporter or a day or two later, this years losing candidate has a responsibility greater than any nominee in modern history to help heal the nation, or at least try. This is the final responsibility that they have to bear. They had a responsibility to their supporters, a responsibility to try to win this election. And now this larger responsibility is to help the country get through this moment and then finally to bring a closure to it. And now, my friends, in a phrase i want to address to others, it is time for me to go. Thank you and good night, and god bless america. Purina one. One visibly healthy pet. We were seen in albuquerque, in what they call a delayed broadcast at 2 00 and the morning. You may laugh at that, but we were the top in our time slot. Reporter his graduates include larry david and jeremy allan steinke. Newharts stammering style was no act. Thats how he talked, as a shy kit with a wry wit. How did you know you were funny . People wil would tell me im funny. Reporter after the army, he became an account, who wasnt good with numbers. If i was still with enron, they would still be in business. The government would never be able to figure out my books. I said, i dont think im cut out for accounting. And thats when i decided, okay, lets find out if im any good. His debut album won three grammys, including a shocker album of the year. You beat out Harry Belafonte and Frank Sinatra. And you met frank later . Yes. And he has those phone calls. His favorite, a publicity man talking to his client, Abraham Lincoln before the gettysburg address. You changed four score and seven to 87 . Reporter you said 87 years . Yeah. I have on the wall the Abraham Lincoln routine written out. They want to put that in the smithsonian. Reporter your 1960 Abraham Lincoln routine going into the countrys preeminent museum. Reporter you and suzanne had the best television marriage ive ever seen. We had a chemistry that was wonderful. Bob, tell me about emily. Reporter a second show, newhart came in the 80s. And i would say, youre right, im tired of making people laugh. Reporter ive been sitting here for an hour, and im sorry to say that ive laughed quite often. Im sure that is quite disappointing. Pauley the whole world is watching america decide its future. With just two days to go, we continue our look at how others see us. Holly williams has the view from the middle east. But we begin with Ramy Inocencio in china. Reporter beijings relationship with washington is arguably one of the most important for the world, but it has been tough to find officials to go on record about the u. S. Election. It is just too sensitive. Still, we did find one popular chinese voice under the spotlight sharing humor and finding truth. America is kind of like my wife. China is like my mom. And now they dont get along. [laughter] and they both have nuclear weapons. Reporter joe wong is one of chinas best known standup comedians and a naturalized american. In 2010 he met joe biden at a roast. Now he hopes biden wins. Do you think most of the people in china prefer one candidate over another . A lot of people support trump. They feel that it will make it easier for china to surpass the u. S. That is why trump has a nickname in china, call chuan jianguo. Who is our biggest foreign adversary . I would say china. Reporter President Trump explicitly blames china for americas devastating covid outbreak, as he told les stal tastaal on 60 minutes. Just one of so many u. S. China flashpoints. They forced reeducation for muslim uighurs, in beijings territorial claims in the south china sea. Victor gao is a prominent china policy advisor. If trump wins, he will be completely unhinged and unrestrained, and he may go after his socalled enemies at home in the United States or his enemies abroad in the world. Reporter if joe biden is elected president . I will invite him immediately to visit china. We will be able, i believe, for our two great nations to have wisdom and sanity and reason. Anybody who is rooting for biden . Reporter back at the bar, joe wong thinks chinas people think more about issues closer to home, their health and wealth. China just got the coronavirus under control, and people are busy cleaning up their businesses or going to school, the everyday stuff instead of the election in america. Reporter but whoever wins, it is a safe guess that washingtons most important relationship, if anything, will grow even more important in the years to come. This is holly williams. President trump has claimed plenty of vic toargs ivictories in the middle east, including the israel accord, the moving of the u. S. Embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem, the killer of isis leader abu bakr albaghdadi, and stripping the isis extremists of their last possibility of territory in syria, an achievement that this man says President Trump has exaggerated. President trump we have defeated isis in the middle east. We have defeated 100 of the cal fatal. Fatal caliphate. Is that true . N no. Reporter President Trump has moved the u. S. Even closer to its longtime ally saudi arabia, a dangerous policy, according to amy pope, who was deputy Homeland Security advisor to president obama. He really wants a much more transactional relationship. Reporter even the murder of Jamal KhashoggiPresident Trump were not going to give up hundreds of billions of dollars in orders. Do you think that the rulers in saudi arabia are worried about a posttrump middle east . I believe they are. I believe they really love the relationship with President Trump. Reporter the opposite is true for iran. President trump pulled out of the Iran Nuclear Deal and squeezed the country with more economic sanctions. Though experts say it has backfired, provoking iran. We saw that specifically last summer, where iran began to attack tankers in the persian gulf. Reporter joe biden says if he is elected, hell rejoin the Iran Nuclear Deal, but he cannot undo President Trumps decision to assassinate iranian general qua kassam sulemani. Many believe iran is simply biding its time to take further revenge. And in syria, President Trump opened the door to a Turkish Military incursion that targeted americas allies, the syrian kurds. It i think the middle eastern allies are nervous the u. S. Is not the aim partner they thought it was. Reporter putting America First means bringing u. S. Troops home, according to President Trump. Pauley with the hours ticking down until america decides, John Dickerson of 60 minutes has some thoughts on the big day. Election day is coming, and a lot of people are stressed out about it. Theyre stressed out about the outcome and stressed out about the possibility that we might not know the outcome. Election officials are worried that all hopped up is no condition for a country to be in if you want a peaceful transfer of power, or a continuation of it. It makes us susceptible to false information, which can take on a life of its own. Were dry timber for a rumor brushfire. And there are a lot of people playing with matches. Domestic agents of chaos are looking for opportunities for mayhem. The president has been consistently sowing doubts, saying he would only lose if there were fraud, though fraud on a scale sufficient to swing an election is as likely as me being hit by lightning, twice. The president suggested if there is not a final vote tally on election day, it will be because there has been mischief. There has never been a final vote on election even in the best of times, the american voting process is ricidy. But officials tallying the votes worry about disinformation as much or more than they do problems with the actual vote. Unfounded rumors about cheating stain the outcome. That weakens the winners ability to do this job. Of all of the virus that attack the vulnerable nerve tissues of a nation at war, rumor is the most malignant wrote life magazine in 1942.
