At Strategic Energy innovations. Stephen and i will be discussing the details of the workshop. Please join us when we come back and take another set up to the year of mercy. Welcome back to mosaic. Today we continue our journey into the year of mercy which pope francis began december 8 2000 15 and is going out through november 20th 2016. Today we will stop more deeply into the air of mercy by examining the newest encyclical issued last may. Before we begin the conversation today i want to invite you to begin with me in prayer. We begin in the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit we recall that we are now in as always a god present as we say this prayer for our earth. All powerful god, you are present in the whole universe. In the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. For autozone upon us the power of your love that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace that we may live as brothers and sisters harming no one. Oh god of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of the earth. So precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives that we may protect the world and not pray on it. That we may so beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the heart of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing to be filled with awe and contemplation. That we are profoundly united with every creature as we Journey Towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love, and peace. Amen. I love that prayer that he and the document with and just to expect explain a little bit about an encyclical, and cyclicals were first written in 1740 and they originally were written by the pope to his brother Bishop Burton for the church. The address topics of the time. Since the Industrial Revolution the Catholic Church has been giving social and cyclicals. These are addressed to all people of goodwill. The social and cyclicals sea to help us all live as one human family more fully. The most recent that was issued this past may care for our common home was the 10th and this one was unique in that was issued to every person living on the planet. It is a letter that provides an overview of the Environmental Crisis and from a religious per point of view. Enemy is Stephen Miller who is one of the organizers of the workshop coming up and over 23 stephen is a person at im so delighted that you have joined us today. Template pleasure to be a actually to be here with st. Teresa. That is right. Its like we are here to promote the workshop. Its like you are the intimate think the workshop is it st. Ann. That is right. Its like thank you. Now i will not forget. I want to first begin by asking what does laudato si mean to you. For me and my professional work in marin county but also with my work at the parish at st. Teresa, i have been really focused on education and consultants around the Climate Crisis with laudato si we now have topdown practice and a call to action from the holy father to act and to internalize, and localize the climate issues that all of us around the planet are facing. It is the official Church Social teaching now on the Climate Crisis, and it is giving us all permission to act. Definitely. The thing that i was most struck, by the document, that i was personally really inspired by was the pope constantly is saying we, our. Really stressing that we are all connected, and even if the prayer we were reciting. That is emphasized again and again, that this is our home, planet earth. We are also connected. And i am wondering, what are your reflections. How do you feel personally challenged by this document. I am incredibly personally challenged by this document. Pope francis is calling us all to have an ecological conversion. The Climate Crisis is disproportionately effecting the most poor, the most vulnerable here in the bay area and across the planet. For the first time, we are seeing new populations of climate refugees. That is our responsibility to address. We need to be mindful of how we act locally, and how our actions are impacting the planet. How they are impacting others. Definitely. I know that one of the problems that he identifies this argument is what he calls and throw pro centrism. That is where human beings think we are the most important beings. I gave in and our culture into you u. S. There is this tendency. I see myself to only think about my needs and michaels. That was such a challenge to the about the we and the connectedness. The thing that inspired me that i saw as if consolation in their is how he talks about the remedy is really cultivating this interior attentiveness apart to really have a presence. To have two be present to every creature, every person, and every being. We have all of the resources we need to sustain the planet, but we need to be acting in a connected way. Not just what our needs are here in the bay area. Here in the united states. Across the planet. I think there are ways and i love how he does is in the document. How you properly change ourselves as well as practically speaking. How do we cultivate a certain attitude for spiritually going out and how we interact with the world. Internalizing culture of conservation and resource efficiency and environmental mindedness. We have to act. It is not just to believe and believe inspired but also active. We will talk about all of the different ways we will begin to take action on this. We hope that you join us. Thank you. Welcome back to mosaic where we are discussing the newest encyclical encyclical encyclical laudato si which is latin for care for the common home. With me today is Stephen Miller who is one of the organizers of one of the upcoming workshops on laudato si held april 23rd, 2016 at st. And parish interval disco. The last segment we spoke about with this document is and some of the spiritual locations we found in it. Now lets talk about one of the practical pieces. In the encyclical the holy father covers many topics. He discovers time and again how this and permit the crisis most deeply affects the poor. He also discusses the issues of water, pollution, loss of biodiversity decline in the quality of life Global Inequality the technical paradigm. The consumer vision of human beings. He goes on and on. He says himself that there was much to be sorrowful about, but also that there is reason to find hope and joy. And i know for myself with the background and with me and where i found hope was that the models that he lifted up. He lifted up the model of jesus and st. Francis. And how they were so in love with all of gods creation. And how jesus would often refer to creation, and remind people, be like the lilies of the field and so many different references to nature that jesus was in nature, mindful of nature. And i know that for me, spiritually that really resonates but i would love to hear from your perspective. Where do you find practically, where do you find the sources of hope for you . Of hope. Yes. I am very practical and how i approach things. Jesus and st. Francis, those are universal models. We can draw a correlation for local and more practical models for raising awareness and taking action through improving the Environmental Performance of the parish. Through engaging parishioners around education and actions and their Community Come of the Faithbased Community and elsewhere. And in connecting all of us in the area, the region, the planet, around this Environmental Crisis. Paris is do not have to figure this out from it solves. That is where a lot of the hope lies. We are seen within the archdiocese of the skull and elsewhere, parishes that are engaging in pretty impressive programs and approaches that others can replicate and tailor for themselves. At paint recess appears, we finished Greenhouse Gas emissions inventory we found there was a 70 energy and Greenhouse Gas emission savings. Because of actions with the parish and clergy. Thomas aquinas in palo alto so i see facilities looking at local Sustainable Food access looking at the spirituality of laudato si and how to inspire others. These things are happening that is incredible. I know in the document he talks also about the ways that we can resolve it and and he believes, and i believes and hope that they it is fixable. The crisis is fixable. It is urgent. We act, but there is still time to act. One of the things is dialogue and the other piece is education it sounds like in some of the parishes in the bay area, the dialogue is happening and the workshop that is coming up is an opportunity for us to talk to each other. Spot but also within a parish to make connections. It wasnt until i decided to become more vocal and had my pastor support to be more vocal around Environmental Issues that i found that we had a leading client dentist is within our parish. She is now an integral part of our green team. Talking about Environmental Issues that i found from the parishioners and the tenant and renters. Theyre looking for resources and ways to reduce their carbon for print. Listening and hearing what the needs are. The education with the faith information students. Through seniors. How did they inform and inspire the Information Tools for resources and taking action. What you have the information that you have the response ability to act. We are looking to support anyone in that cause. What did you do and how to get it started at the parish . We prefer to think of it or expansively. Care for Creation Teams. It is not just about recycling or composting. It is about looking at the needs, interest and talent within the parish in terms of the people. In terms of the situation and to the community and where can parishioners take action. The green team model is one where youre getting a pluralistic input of ideas and coming up with the specific tangible projects and initiatives, and texas for taking action. If there are parishioners who are watching this wanting to get started the parish. , what would you encourage them to do as the first steps. Spot come to the workshop on april 23rd. We will talk more about it. But really that and go to our website we have models for getting engaged. Everything from the universal catholic claimant covenant are Greenhouse Gas emission inventory and how we got there. The holy father talks about an ecological education and and ecological spirituality. And in laudato si, the basis is the scientific knowledge. Pope francis is building on the data that is out there, but bring it to a new level of consciousness and spiritual elegy. Definitely. I think what he is talking about an ecological conversion, there was this comment in there. I think it was taken from the bishops in africa, where they were saying they had gotten together and they were talking about the Environmental Crisis. And they were reflecting on how the physical desert on our globe, on our planet are getting faster and faster because the desert of our heart are getting faster and faster. And i immediately thought of hildegard who was this wonderful woman from the 12th century and she is now a doctor of the church. 104 woman declared a doctor of the church and she would talk about this greening power. It was almost like she was making up her own definition of that word before greening and before green teams, and recycling and all of that. For her it meant really being healthy. Healthy as a person, but she also painted and she would have these beautiful paintings were she was trying to reflect on how everything in the cosmos is connected. Every person is connected to the earth and to every other person and to the earth is connected to the rest of the universe. And in order for it all to be really healthy, you have to cultivate the greening within yourself, and within your society. We may be facing greater expenses of deserts and different parts of our globe through deserts. Clean air deserts where folks have limited access to what they need to live healthy. Where as other areas of the planet might be rich and flush with that. We need to be bringing our planet back into stasis and a stable state. One way to start doing that is to be acting locally and figuring out ways that those local actions can benefit. Definitely. We will talk more about the upcoming workshop on april 23rd, when we come back. Please join us. Thank you. Welcome back to mosaic where we have been dying into the meaning and applications of the newest and encyclical laudato si. Care for the common home. With me now is Stephen Miller, who is one of the organizers of the upcoming workshop on laudato si. Lets talk more about the upcoming workshop on april 23rd at st. Anns. I think this is such a wonderful opportunity. Especially when we see the holy father encouraging us to have dialogue and with one another. With people of different faith. With people who are scientists, and politicians. He wants everyone to be a part of this dialogue. I think it is wonderful that we are starting here. The workshop will not only provide participants with an opportunity to talk to one another come up with will also give them a chance to learn ways to respond. Would you speak a little bit more about it and tell us about the format of the day. I would be happy to. Thank you. April 23rd is the start of an archdiocese and wide dialogue. And collective thought process around care for creation. What we are doing in the bay area. We should be leading and a leading model for archdiocese across the country and elsewhere. We need to get going. April 23rd is meant to be the start of that. It is the morning. Saturday, april 23rd. It is a free event. You do need to register in advance on our website sfarch. Org green. After that we will hear a Plenary Panel case studies from the archdiocese, including my own in San Francisco. What is happening. What are some models that we want to be getting out there and having a Group Discussion around that. Then we will roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty with three concurrent workshops focusing on improving the Environmental Performance of the parish. Dr. Gail kendall will be leaving that with members of the San Francisco department of the environment. Specific common very tangible steps and methods for looking at your parish, buildings, your operations and how the congregation uses these facilities. You and i will be leading a session, looking at engaging parishioners from young to old, and having a facilitated conversation around that. And what are some of the approaches, and what is happening already, and what is working, and what could be adopted. And also, we will be looking more broadly. Members of the staff from the Catholic Relief Services will be talking to us about broader Environmental Justice issues and connecting more broadly to our communities. That will be the format of the morning. It starts bright and early i believe, 9 00 that day and runs through 12 30. Select that is fantastic. Im really excited about presenting with you. I think for the demographic that i work with, people 18 to 40, this is such an important issue. It is definitely on their radar. And something that they want to take action. I think it is a wonderful way for parishes to also engage this demographic. And for those who cannot join us on april 23rd, just a reminder. We do have a wealth of resources. We will have all presentations available at the website sfarch. Org green. Fantastic. That is also going to be up on the screen as we are talking. If people want to go check that out. This is just the beginning. You are hoping that there is going to be more. We are committed that there will be more. There has to be more. We are hoping that april 23rd will inspire and provide ideas and excitement for other parishes for developing and establishing their care for Creation Teams and figuring out what they need and want to be doing with that effort. And moving forward. In october, before the end of the year of mercy, we are looking to reconvene those that are interested in the archdiocese, and have those care for Creation Team champions come back together to talk to us about what they have done and their success is a common there too much is, and what they are thinking of as a next step. Its like there is great. There is already a followup being planned. That is fantastic. It is going to be april 23rd from 9 00 until 12 30. And it is free. It is three. People should register before hand . Yes. April 8th, i believe. We are asking. April 15th for folks to register sfarch. Org green. Select fantastic. And it is also going to be bilingual . It will. We are looking at who will be attending, but we will prepare that. It sound like it will be very interactive. That is the focus. We are starting broad and with the spiritual message, but then we are quickly getting down to the concrete actions and models, and how you can adopt those of for your parishes. We are seeking commitments from everyone at the workshop. One thing they are going to be taking back to the parish, to their Faith Community in terms of idea and action. Wonderful. Thank you so much for with us today. It has been such a pleasure talking to us. Select the giver joining us on this episode of mosaic. I hope to see you on april 23rd at st. Ann. It is a much.
