As kpix 5s kip doe reports. Lets talk about prop 16. A new poll out from uc berkeley shows prop 16 trailing by double digits. Store the race sheeting up for prop 16. It would reinstate affirmative action in college admissions, Government Employment and contracts. Released by the institute of governmental studies shows prop 16 no votes leading 39 to 38 . Would you go so far as to say prop 16 has one foot in the grave. Those are your words. I wouldnt necessarily say it that way. But its chances are not great. Mark is the trek tore of polling and found voters with no Party Preference or other parties strongly opposed prop 16 by 20 to 30 points. Both of those groups are not on the extremes. And how those people in the middle view things usually is a good indicator. Proposition 16 takes on discrimination. The yes on prop 16 Campaign Launched an aggressive push, including this ad, nighttime clips of tiki torch carrying marchers. When i first saw the ad, i thought it was very, very disturbing. Theyre over represented in some of americas colleges so i think what young Asian Americans will lose slots even though they had worked hard. We just hit 50 today in terms of voter turn out. So were very excited about that. Previously in 2016 i think we had about 28 at this point in time. Wow so all ready 50 . A lot of people interested in this election. In case voters missed the deadline to request a mailin ballot. Can one still be requested. Or what are the options . Tonight at 5 00 was the deadline for a mail ballot. But you can still vote in person at any of our inperson voting locations. A lot of us very anxious for election night. What that will look like with mailin ballots and results coming in. When you report on the numbers, what will we get on your first report . Is there going to be a cut off to get your ballot to be included in those numbers . Were saying you should have your ballots in at the latest by thursday. Because it will take time to do signature checking and on saturday, were going to pivot to supporting inperson voting locations. So the first results that we post at 8 00 p. M. , that will be the early voting and the vote by maims that we have gotten in, signature checked and scanned into the system. With 50 of the voter turn out all ready by this date, thats going to be a lot of numbers very quickly at 8 00. Youre holding poll worker training today, how are you preparing to open more voting centers, is that going to be different obviously because of covid . Were actually having fewer locations, but theyre open for longer this year. And were using different equipment. So we did some Online Training and then were also doing in person training so poll workers can get their hands on the equipment and test it out. And how many people are you expecting to come out with so many voting by mail . Are you expecting those long lines . Or maybe not . I hope not. I have no idea at this point. People there are getting ready by filling up sandbags to protect their homes, zeta would be the fifth named storm to hit louisiana so far this year. Such a difference from what were experiencing here. We could use a bit of rain. But obviously thoughts are with folks in louisiana who have done this time and time again. Much like weve experienced Power Outages and dry conditions. Everybody is stuck in whatever weather pattern weve been in since midaugust. Tropical storm zeta the fifth named storm to hit louisiana. A likelihood at this point tomorrow. This is the eleventh named storm to hit the United States in the 2020 atlantic hurricane season. Its a Tropical Storm now because it weakened as it moved over the yukotan peninsula over the last 24 hours. But the last few frames of the satellite loop shows the storm getting more organized. More red showing up indicates colder cloud tops. This thing is ramping back up. Its going to become a hurricane once again. Lets switch over to the path of zeta. 69 Miles Per Hour sustained winds. It will become a hurricane later on this evening. Likely to still be a category 1 hurricane as it approaches the louisiana coast by wednesday afternoon. Making landfall to the south of new orleans wednesday evening as the sun is going down in that part of the u. S. And making its way inland and weakening dramatically. But its likely to bring excessive rain through the southeast and eventually up into the appalachians as well. Around here, weve been in the dry weather pattern for the past several months. No exception today, temperatures got a little warm santa rosa up to 87 degrees after you started in the low 40s this morning. You warmed up by 45 degrees today. Hayward, 82 for a high, mostly 71s. Just below 81 degrees in san jose. 75 in San Francisco. 7 degrees above normal for this time of the year. Halfmoon bay, 71 degrees. Temperatures in similar territory tomorrow. Right now, 70s. Some 60s on the map around Half Moon Bay and palo alto. Downtown, the temperature is 73 degrees. The usual 4 or 5degree difference we see this time of the day at this time of the year. The winds have died down. Offshore wind farther inland. But not as strong as the winds weve been tracking the past couple days, on shore winds return to the forecast. But its going to be a slow process. Temperatures running above normal for the next few days, temperatures tonight dropping into the 40s across the bay area. Which isnt that far below average. Maybe 2 or 3 degrees below normal for the coolest spots on the map. Dry air in place cools off very efficiently. It heats up efficiently. Were going to see a big time warm up across the bay area on wednesday. Temperatures in the lower half of the 50s in the city. Warming up to above 70 degrees tomorrow afternoon. Maybe not quite as warm as today thanks to a on nor wind kicking in. Winds around 5 to 10 Miles Per Hour. Not breezy by bay area standards. San jose, upper 70s for high temperatures. Starting off around 50 degrees. A cool start in santa rosa. A big warm up, 80 degrees during the afternoon, plenty of sunshine and light winds, still occasionally, that offshore direction, not as gusty, that helps as dry conditions continue, right up to 80 degrees for the east bay as well. Concord to 80. Other temperatures, maybe a little bit above 80 degrees the farther inland you go. Low 80s in fairfield. A mix of 70s. And 80s on the map. Mid 60s on the coast. A week away from that big election. Tonight we all ready have some surprising numbers. Kpix 5s Wilson Walker on one county that all ready has about 50 of its votes in. Wilson . Yeah, a lot of the region closing in on that landmark. Weve been following the earliest of ballots here in contra costa county. We showed you the scanning of the signatured. We showed you them getting opened up and ready for counting. Today the ballots hit the machines. So were scanning, were not tabulating. And we will be doing this everyday between now and tuesday. The highspeed scanning machines are up and running in martinez. And they wont stop until election day. Fivepage ballots from about half of contra costa countys registered voters are all ready here. Right now we are over 48 and i expect by 10 00 tomorrow morning, we will hit that half way point, 50 . Well inch up probably around 45 by the end of today, we started scanning as well. We scanned about 500,000 ballot cards so far. Other bay area counties like alameda are on a similar pace as voters continue to show up early in large numbers. I decided to come
