He is Charles Foster kane, the antihero of the classic museum citizens kane. Although orson welles gets the acclaim, people are hoping for him to get his fair share. For Ben Mankiewicz it is all a family affair. Welcome, mr. Kane. Welcome. Reporter to see why citizen kane is a classic, you should know the story behind it. These extremely different personalities collided with one another and made something that we still talk about today. Reporter its in a new film, my grandfather at the center, later on sunday morning. Pauley stevie nicks is a longtime member of the rock band Fleetwood Mac, not to mention a solo artist as well. This morning shell be taking to tracy smith for the record. Reporter after five decades in the music industry, stevie nicks is suddenly as hot as ever, with a new song, a new feature film, and a whole new following. Why do you think you are here . Because i just wont go away. [laughter] the memory reporter the incomparable stevie nicks coming up on sunday morning. Pauley talk about a bangup job, lee cowan has witnessed an attempt to break the unlikeliest of world records. Reporter the bigger the better doesnt apply to all things, but it certainly does for fireworks. The record, though, can be a very colorful experience. 2,000 hours for about 20 seconds of pleasure, thats if it goes off. Reporter if it goes off. I thought you said when . When it goes off. Three, two, one, go reporter will it work . Ahead on sunday. Pauley mo rocca relives the bitterly contested president ial election of 1876. Seth doane and Elizabeth Palmer tell us why the whole world is watching this years election. Just in time for halloween, luke burbank visits a drivethrough haunted house. Plus steve hartman, politics with John Dickerson and more on this sunday morning, the 25th of october 2020. And well be back after this. In the bay area, we believe in science. Traffic and air pollution will be even worse after the pandemic. Thats why we support measure rr to keep caltrain running. Which is at risk of shutdown because of the crisis. To keep millions of cars off our roads, to reduce air pollution and fight Climate Change. And measure rr helps essential workers like me get to work and keep our communities healthy. Relieve traffic. Reduce pollution. Rescue caltrain. [all] yes on measure rr. They all endorse yes on prop 25. To end unfair, unjust, discriminatory money bail. Governor gavin newsom and van jones. Theyre voting yes on 25. The western center on law and poverty. The Dolores Huerta foundation. Californians for safety and justice. And the California Democratic party. They all agree that the size of your wallet shouldnt determine whether or not youre in jail. So, vote yes on prop 25. Pauley hurry up and wait. Watch words for our exacerbating times. But there is another phrase to remember patience is a virtue. As Barry Petersen learned when he set out to report our cover story in those prepandemic days of not so very long ago. Reporter youve seen the pictures, wherever you vote this year, you know there is a good chance you need to be ready to wait and wait and wait. Weve been here eight hours and 30 minutes. Reporter at the polls, at the grocery store, in traffic, we amercans are weary of waiting. But consider this even before the pandemic, we spent an estimated two years of our lives waiting in lines. [yelling] reporter and with covid cases on the rise again, it is fair to say many of us just cant wait for things to get back to normal. But it turns out impatience may be almost as dangerous as the virus itself. People are just so anxious to return to what used to be. It seems a dangerous trend. You know, there was an interesting study where they give people the choice to sit alone and get bored or give themselves painful electric shock. And about 70 of the men chose to give themselves a painful electric shock versus sit alone and get bored. So people dont like to get bored. People do not like to be controlled. People do not like uncertainty. Reporter but thats only the half of it. The other half is our genes. Dr. Amit sood founded a department that researches impatience at the mayo clinic in rochester, minnesota. Before the pandemic, he told us why. Doctor were designed to be impatient. So when little babies are born, they dont just wait for you to clean their diapers. They cry. When was the last time you really preferred a slow elevator . Or you loved slow Internet Connection . Reporter it turns out how we handle ourselves in these Uncertain Times comes at a price. Doctor the opposite of patience is not impatience. The opposite of patience is anxious, ill, injured, lonely, and dead. Reporter it literally can kill you . Doctor it can. An episode of explosive anger or impatience can increase your risk of heart attack and sudden death by twofold to eightfold for the next few hours. Reporter wow if that is not alarming enough, the doctor says impatience can even have a longterm affect on your d. N. A. Doctor if we were to take your blood sample and measure your telomeres, which are at the end of the chromosomes, the shorter and smaller they are, the older you are. Reporter so theyre actually making themselves older by being impatient . Yes. Some people say the only thing that gets faster with impatience is aging. Reporter and impatience has an evil twin brother stress. I took the mayo clinic stress test, designed to simulate the everyday life. You must do things like keep squeezing a grip. Squeeze a little more. Reporter or endure three minutes keeping an hand in icecubed freezing water. Really and truly, it already hurts. The results, dramatically higher Blood Pressure and changes to the heart rate. The test was overseen by dr. Michael joyner. A big rise in Blood Pressure. Reporter it reminded me of being on the phone, trying to get customer service, where you feel like youre endlessly waiting. Can that have the same effect on your body . Absolutely. People have a very hard time understanding what they do and dont have control over. Reporter it can feel like the world is out of control these days, but we do have control over ourselves. Doctor if you choose to be patient, youre helping yourself, youre living longer and happier, and youre helping your loved ones. Being patient is a choice. Reporter and the other word that will help us through the pandemic is resilience. And that will fire up your body. Doctor you dont have any bullets or sword, you cannot fistfight with this virus. You can empower your billions of immune cells to fight with this virus. And when you are resilient, your immune cells are stronger. Reporter and boosting your resilience can be a walk in the park, literally. There are so many elements of nature that we respond to as humans. Reporter Florence Williams traveled the world writing about how nature can help us master impatience and make us healthier. The science is pretty clear on this. Even after just 15 minutes of walking in a green space or a park, our Blood Pressure drops a little bit, our heart rate slows down, and even our stress hormones, like cortisol, lower. Reporter it has to be good . It boosts our mood very dramatically. Reporter the frustration of lockdowns quickly gave way to people flooding the outdoors when they can, and feeling better for it. And some take it to a new level of calm. Doing something the japanese invented called forest bathing, basically hiking in slow motion. The benefit of slowing down is that your life isnt passing you by. Reporter jane west is a psychologist who leads forestbathing sessions in the colorado rockies. I think being in the forest, surrounded by green and wonderful smells, allows us to be locked in this moment as if nothing else exists. I know that is so hard to find these days, but it is doable and reachable, and i do this because it gives me those moments. Reporter the pandemic wont end any time soon, but dr. Sood insists we can turn our impatience to good use if we just want to. Is there an opportunity to make ourselves better by training ourselves about patience . Doctor absolutely. There is tremendous opportunity during this pandemic to rise because of it. Reporter that ability to rise above may be sorely tested since, as we have heard, ballot counting could go on for days after november 3rd. For americans and for america, what might be the ultimate test. Their laundry smells moremily amazing than ever. Flings, uh, honey . Isnt that the dogs towel . Hey, me towel su towel. Theres more gain scent plus oxi boost and febreze odor remover in every fling. Gain. Seriously good scent with mucinex nightshift youve got powerful relief from your worst nighttime cold and flu symptoms. So grab nightshift to fight your symptoms, get your zzzs. And get back to your rhythm. Feel the power. Beat the symptoms fast. Pauley look, up in the sky, a fireworks display that is truly a bangup job. Here is lee cowan. Reporter you know it is not customary to think about fireworks this close to halloween, but with trickortreating a little scary this air, who couldnt use a little magic in the skies winter fireworks, above the ski slopes of colorado, and above them was a monster ready to jump out of nowhere. This was february 1911th, the day the biggest aerial fireworks in the world was being loaded for a launch. This is certainly one of the more unique record attempts ive ever done. Reporter he works for Guinness World records. He was sent here to certify the wouldbe achiever. Whats the correct term, a launch . Yeah. I was convinced it was going to be successful . Were you . 100 . Reporter in the dark and the chill of that night, the man behind the record attempt, steamboat native tim borden, was anxious. And now it all came down to the push of a button. Three, two, one reporter the worlds biggest aerial firework was a fiery fail. Oh, im so sorry. It is very easy to go out and say, hey, great job. Youre a new Guinness World record title holder. But how do you deliver the news of, oh, that went really poorly. This is an official Guinness World record. Reporter dressed in their crisp uniforms, they admit that calling a record a world record takes some recordsetting nerves. Does it ever get ugly . Weve definitely seen people who were not the record was broken. Ive had stuff tossed in my direction. Water bottles. Water bottles, a very easy thing to throw. I did a food mosaic that was earlier this year. Reporter even though their job is to judge, dont call them that. Guinness refers the word adjudicator. It is very british. Reporter irish, actually. It used to be linked to the famous dublin brewery. Guinness First Published the book of achievements in 1955 as a way to solve pub disputes. Since then, that book, the 2021 version came out earlier this month, has sold over 143 million copies. And this is a toilet pyramid. Reporter who didnt, as a kid, flip through it, and peer at the worlds tallest man or the worlds shortest woman, the worlds heaviest squash for the most tennis balls stuffed in a dogs mouth it is six, by the way. Things you consider weird we consider very normal. The woman with the longest fingernails, i know her. She lives in houston, she is lovely. She does everything accept dishes in the sink. Thats very normal to me. Reporter how long are her fingernails . 32 feet in total . Reporter feet . Yes. Reporter whoa i had let them grow maybe three inches, and the next thing i know, they were here. Reporter most records leave you in some state of awe. How do you get 51 people crammed into a v. W. Bus. That would be a social distancing nightmare these days. How many bottle flips can you do in 30 seconds . Reporter but guinness, mindful of the pandemic, set up weekly challenges. This weeks challenge, how many can you do in 30 seconds. Reporter almost anything you can do alone is fair game. What else you going to do . Reporter guinness usually gets about a thousand applications every single week to break a record. Are you ready to get seated . You ready to tuba. Reporter one of the most common is the mass participation record, like this attempt back in 2018 for the Worlds Largest tuba ensemble, organized by the kansas city symphony. The record to beat was 502 tubas all playing in unison. That is apparently a thing. Reporter because it was december, they chose, what else, silent night. When they actually started playing, it was beautiful. Im not even kidding. Reporter christina, with the help of witnesses, counted 835 tubas, shattering the coveted tuba ensemble record. It was good. Reporter victory is always sweet. Sometimes it is literally sweet. The walkins company wanted to honor its 150th anniversary a few years ago by baking the most layers into a layer cake. But the higher it got, the more the layers started to lean. Oh, my gosh, its tilting. Reporter you were looking pretty nervous. I was so nervous. Reporter the cake had to stand upright unassisted for 60 seconds to get the title. Seven, six reporter in the end. End. Three, two, one. 250 layers, the Watkins Company has broken the Guinness World records title for greatest number of layers in a layer cake. When you see someone blow your mind with the fact theyre refusing to give up and they find a way to make it happen, i think it really teaches you to not doubt people. Reporter which brings us back to tim borden. You know, im not the kind of guy who wants to give up. I dont think anybody does. Reporter he and his team came back this year to try for the biggest aerial firework record again. One thing i can guarantee is well have a heck of an explosion at the bottom of that mortar. Reporter as the regular fireworks ended, everyone took their places, including christina. And just like the year before, the moment came in the pitch dark. Are you ready . Three, two, one, go reporter but it wasnt dark for long. [laughter] [cheering] hey, how about that, guys . [yelling] reporter at 2,797 pounds, the only thing brighter than the fireworks glow was tim bordens smile, and he and his team were handed the world record. Congratulations, gentlemen. [cheering] [yelling] i just feel like this job has kind of inspired me in a way that i didnt expect that the job would. To have that opportunity to go and say, you know what, you did a really good job, thats a you know what, you did a really good job, thats a great feeling. From our steve hartman. Reporter its hard being an only child, especially during a pandemic, which may explain why twoyearold theo brady of salt lake city, utah, recently felt this Strange Attraction to a halloween declaration. I think he was kind of lonely and he found this skeleton and thought, this could be my friend. Reporter so Abigail Brady agreed to something ridiculous. I swallowed all of my pride and thought, if this makes my son happy, im going to do it. Reporter do what, you ask . Take them on a play date to the beach. Abigail was secretly hoping that would be the end of it, but the pair hit it off famously, and for the last month, theo and the skeleton have been joined at the hipbone, dining together, and winding down at the end of a hauntingly long day. In some weird way it is comforting. He likes to read benny books, which is so cute cutecreepy, but cute. Reporter creepy, but cute, not exactly what most parents want for the first romance. But the bond is there, whether on the playground or at the market. You would swear the skeleton was theos brother from other mummy. And at times, benny almost seemed happy, his humerus clearly showing. And who wouldnt want this kind of friend for their child. He just sees the skeleton as someone who needs love. I think it is fine, unless he starts Walking Around with a casket. Reporter but for now, it is nothing to be scared of. In fact, this october i think we can all benefit from a little less fright and a lot more friendly. Hes so nice. Pauley actor and director orson welles is widely acclaimed as the creator of the classic citizen kane. But another less celebrated man deserves his due as well, and it is a hollywood affair for our man in hollywood, Ben Mankiewicz. Reporter it is arguably the most famous word ever spoken on film. And it comes from what many consider the greatest movie ever made. Reporter citizen kane. Orson welles 1941 masterpiece on the rise and fall of Charles Foster kane. A ruthless capitalist William Randolph hearst. I got my candy, all of it. Welcome, gentlemen, to the inquiry. Reporter with its deep focus camera work and bold lighting techniques that uses shadows to direct the audiences attention, citizen kane is a cinematic landmark. So it is only fitting that the story behind it is equally compelling. And thats the story David Fincher tells in his new netflix film. I spoke to him at paramount studios where welles made citizen kane 30 years ago. When you look at a movie as cohesive, it fires on all cylinders. Make yourself at home, mr. Mankowits, or shall i call you mank . Reporter gary oldman stars as herman j. Mankiewicz, who welles hired. Mank, its orson welles. Of course it is. Reporter full disclosure, herman j. Mankiewicz was my grandfather. For all that i know and all that my father knew about his dad, you captured herman completely authentic. Well, thats a great thing to hear. Reporter his resume includes fight club, gone girl, and the social network, so a black and white period piece about someone most people have never heard of seems a curious choice. What was the pull of late 30s, early 40s hollywood . It wasnt the character. It was the guy. It was the notion of someone struggling with great ability and personal troubles and, you know, his pushing a rock up a hill in gravel. Reporter my grandfather was definitely a character. Everybody called him mank. Talentingly tormented, he was the witties wittiest guy in the room, also the drunk drunkest. We know in the earliest years of the 20th century, this world was being watched closely by intelligences greater than man. Reporter three years before kane, welles radio broadcast of war of the worlds, scared thousands into thinking that martians that invaded new jersey. Welles was a genius, and he knew it, and so did hollywood. At just 24, welles was given cart blanc to make any movie he wanted. So he went to my grandfather, who had an idea take on the original media mowing william hearst. What is interesting to me is the notion of a guy who overheard a lot of things and had a specific understanding of the world he was pulling the curtain back from. If i may be so bold, why hearst . Are you going to say anything . You pick a fight with willie, you are finished. Reporter in citizen kane, herman j. Mankiewicz revealed how men like hearst used their power to manipulate people and crush dissent. Really, charles, people will think what i tell them to think. Reporter he recreated Hearst Castle by blending vintage photographs with visual effects. There is a great photo of my grandfather coming out it was, like, 20 by 20foot, and just the doorway it was, quite honestly, exactly the way welles would have done it. Nobody, but nobody, makes a monkey out of William Randolph hearst. Reporter that is a scne with marion davies, who everybody knew was hearsts mistress. She is played by amanda seyfried. It is amazing. It really reconnects me to this story. Reporter we spoke to her outside the manhattan mansion hearst bought for davies. I think the perception was she was not that bright, a comedienne, really very flighty, young woman. She was actually so much smarter than people give her credit for. When one is daunting in a broadway hit, one gets so tired of dancing. You didnt get so tired when you danced over me all night. Thats because i dance on my toes now. I was tansin dancing on a heel then. She is someone i would have gotten along with very well. Reporter amanda seyfried, who starred in mean girls and mama mia, a black and white was a Welcome Change of pace. Its a really great way to just go back in time and experience an era that we werent a part of. Reporter the debate over over who wrote citizen kane has been raging for decades. My grandfather wrote a long first draft, welles condensed it. They shared the films only Academy Award the oscar for best screenplay. But it is not the credit that matters to fincher. Its the collaboration. I was interested in watching how these extremely different personalities collided with one another at one moment in time and made something that we still talk about today. Mank mr. Mancowits . While my link to the film is obvious, there is also another family connection. What does it say . Reporter jack fincher, who was David Finchers father. He was a journalist most of hu his life, which is why his assessment is the only good movies are written by or about journalists. Reporter David Fincher is not given the sentimentality, but it was special to finish what his dad started 25 years ago. I wish he could have seen it get made before nine months of chemo, but it didnt happen. Reporter jack fincher died in 2003. And were left with this. And it is nice to come full circle. Reporter there is a circle completed for me, too. I love seeing my grandfathers name on citizen kane, but i never knew it because he died in 1963, long before i was born. Youre not going to like this. Reporter but there fincher and gary oldman, i feel like im getting a little taste of the real herman j. Mankiewicz. My father would have been very, very pleased to see that you have created his dad as someone just about everybody would have wanted to be around, you know . Yeah, yeah, hes a mank. I knew a man, bow jangles, and he danced for you the silver hair, ragged shirt, and baggy pants the old soft shoe he jumped so high pauley nine days to go before america decides on a choice for president. An election that we certainly hope goes far more smoothly than the disputed election of 1876. Mo rocca takes us back. Reporter 1876 was a banner year for america. The 100th anniversary of the declaration of independence. A nationwide celebration with a full fifth of the countrys population descending on philadelphia for the centennial exhibition. But beneath the revelry, there was a deep sense of unease. This was the depths of a pretty serious economic depression. There was widespread unfloiment. Unemployment. Labor disputes going on in various parts of the country. Reporter and, says columbia history professor eric foner, the country was still feeling the after shocks of the itself war which ended 11 years before. There was still violence in the south that existed during the silver wacivilwar because of oppositios giving to the rides of former slaves. It was not a tranquil year, thats for sure. Reporter 1876 was also a president ial election year. And all of these issues, plus the rampant corruption in the administration of outgoing president ulysses s. Grant would factor into the contest. Reporter the republicans ran Ohio Governor rutherford b. Hayes. Was he charismatic . I wouldnt say so. Reporter this is a spectacular porch . Yeah, hayes boasted he wanted a porch with a house attached. He really exemplified that american tradition of the office seeks you, you dont seek it. We have kind of a tri affect over here, we have general grant, general sherman, general sheridan, and also ohio as well. Reporter hayes service as a general during the civil war says christy, was central to his identity. He saw what was behind the sexualism that caused the civil war, and he always thought, how do we make this country united again. Reporter meanwhile, the democrats were hungry to reclaim the white house, which they hadnt won in 20years. Their candidate, Samuel Tilden, a bachelor lawyer, had made his name fighting bigcity corruption. Reporter the man was a bit lethargic, and a lot of people thought he was dull, dull, but dedicated. His home sat across from new york city gra gramercy park. This house is kind of nicer than the white house. This house is a great tilden legacy. Reporter while both had beautiful homes, neither candidate, says eric foner, was exactly mt. Rushmore material. Both of them were basically me med metebasically. You had to parties competing with people very loyal to them. Reporter on election night, tilden was ahead in the popular vote by 260,000 votes. He actually goes to bed believing tilden had won, and he has interviews with reporters saying ive lost. The Republican Party has to step in and tell him to stop saying that. Reporter thats because republican officials still saw a nar ynarrow path to victory for hayes. If hayes could carry the three Southern States where the results were not year clear, florida, louisiana, and south carolina, he would win by one electoral vote. They just issued a statement hayes has carried those states and is elected. In a certain sense, it is almost like the 2000 election where bush made an early claim of victory, even though it was so divided, and gore never quite contested it. Reporter and just as in the year 2000, america in 1876 woke up the morning after the election not knowing who had won. Inauguration back then was in early march, which meant the country had four months to figure out who would be its 19th president. This election was flawed from top to bot tomb. Reporter massive voter fraud only added to the confusion. There was violence throughout the south again africanamerican voters to try to make it impossible for them to vote. Reporter black men, almost all of whom were republican back then, had only recently won the right to vote, and southern democrats were actively suppressing that vote. If there had been a Fair Election in the south, there is no question hayes would have won by a large margin. Reporter but as the weeks dragged on, neither side was willing to concede. How tense did it get . There were democratic newspapers with headlines march to washington to install tilden as president. There were republicans saying were on the virge of another civil war. Reporter tilden or blood. If tilden is not counted in, we could have another war. There were key democrats who asked tilden to take the oath of office anyway. He refused to do so. And there were a lot of people, particularly businessmen and others, who said, we dont even care who is elected, but get this settled. Reporter but congress was divided, and the constitution offered no clear direction for resolving the impasse. So in january of 1877, a 15member Electoral Commission was formed, the eight republicans and seven democrats, who would determine which candidate won the states in dispute. By some coincidence, all of the electoral votes allocated to hayes by a vote of 87 in each case. Reporter thats right, the Commission Voted along party lines. But it is not over yet . It is not over yet. Reporter the tilden camp cried foul. With inauguration just days away and the nation on edge, both candidates met in washington for secret negotiations. Ironically, they took place at warmly house, a major hotel owned by a black man, probably the most welltodo africanamerican in the city of washington at that time. Reporter ironic because the agreement forged there, known as the compromise of 1877, would have longlasting repercussions for africanamericans in the south. The democrats will not stop the inauguration of hayes. They will accept hayes as president. Hayes will end the remaining reconstruction. Reporter in other words, the republicans get the white house; the democrats affectively regain control of the american south. No more federal protection of the rights of recently freed africanamericans. The democrats promised they will respect the basic rights of the former slaves, which they do not do. Reporter rutherford b. Hayes was certified at president in 1877, and Samuel Tilden accepted the decision. Three days later, hayes was inaugurated in a peaceful transfer of power. I think if hayes or tilden had been of the personality that was very aggressive and intense, and really wanted this presidency for very selfish reasons, i think the whole tenure would have changed. Reporter today, says christy, president hayes is remember less than for what he did in his single term in office, than the election that threatened, once again, to tear apart the country. Are visitors bringing up the election of 1876 more . Somehow knowing weve been there before and survived, i think gives some comfort and some hope to people. Both as a member of Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist, she has built a devoted following. This morning she talks to tracy smith for the record. [applause and cheering] reporter singer songwriter sur evieicks is getting a little restless these days. I should have reporter the pandemic has put performances like this on hold, so she is waiting to take the stage again. And, as she told us last week, the waiting is, well, the hardest part. It seems like for so many creative people, this is a very creative time, but also time is slipping away. Time is being stolen from all of us, absolutely. Especially if youre 72 years old. Reporter does that weigh on you . Uhhuh. Yeah, it does. When youre really working, you really stay young. You stay young because you have to. But when youre just sitting around in your house. I think that old man time starts to get ahold of you. Rings like a bell through the night. Reporter still, it seems like old man time has always been kind to stevie nicks. Reporter you can see it in her justreleased feature film,. 24 karat gold, the concert, where she looks and sounds pretty much the same as she always did. Reporter the movie will stream soon, but for the moment it is being shown in socialdistanced theaters. It is as close to a really big rock and roll concert in a big ven new venue s your going to get. Praise god on this day reporter and its not the only way stevie is making her way heard these days. She decided to release her first new song in six years, show them the way, as a call for action on the eve of the election. Show them the way now there you go again, you said you want your freedom. Reporter and now some of her classic tunes are suddenly climbing the charts again, thanks to a cranberryjuice loving idaho skateboarder who posted this on tiktok. So four decades after dreams and rumors came out, theyre both in the top 10again. I know. Reporter the videos inspired quite a few imitaters, including band mate nick fleetwood. And last week this one from the lady herself. You want your freedom this tiktok thing has kind of blown my mind. And im happy about it because it seems to have made so many people happy. Stand back, stand back reporter you could say making people happy has been stevie nicks calling for the past 50 years or so. And after a career of platinumselling albums and soldout concerts, she became the first, and so far only, woman to be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame twice. 22 men are in twice for their solo work and being in a big band, and no women. Reporter until you . Until me. So i feel that i definitely broke a big rock and roll glass ceiling. Reporter and her back story is just as legendary. When young stevie dropped out of college to chase her musical dreams, her parents cut her off financially, so she waited tables and cleaned houses to support herself and her then boyfriend, guitarist lindsey buckingham. You were cleaning houses and mopping floors, was there a moment when you thought, ooh, i made a mistake . No. No. Because i was doing that to support my music pals, lindsey and some other friends, too, that didnt have hardly anything. So i was the one who actually was able to pay the rent and pay the money to keep our toyota running. So i didnt mind at all because i did not expect my boyfriend, lindsey, to get a job. Because what in the world would he do . Reporter so you had to be the one . It was wall on me. Reporter by the time she became a member of Fleetwood Mac, she almost expected to be underestimated. So she had an arrangement with christy vee. You two stuck together through thick and thin and really had each others back . Yeah, we did. And christine and i made a pact at the very beginning if we were ever in a room of super famous guitar players that didnt treat us with the respect that we thought we deserved, we would stand you and say this party is over and we would walk out. Reporter and did you have to do that . We never actually had to do that. That was a nice surprise. Reporter and their friendship endured. Even if her romantic relationships seemed to be more of a challenge, but they inspired some great music. Reporter have you had a love a great love in your life . Yeah, three. But its not easy to be mr. Stevie nicks, even if you happen to be mr. Really famous rock star guy. Reporter so lindsey falls in that category, the great love . Oh, yes well, not exactly. Lindsey has his own category. Lindsey was my great musical love. Thats different. Reporter stevie nicks dad once told her she would never marry because her music would come first. He was wrong she married once. But her dad was right, for stevie nicks, music will always be her true love. When im 90 years old, i dont want to be laying in my big, gorgeous bed with music playing and 15 chinesecrested dogs, and going im so brokenhearted that i didnt find the one, and then i would have to answer myself and say, yes, but you did find several the ones, who you wrote great songs about, and thats why youre living in this spectacular house with everything that you want and anything that you could possibly want to buy. So its like maybe this is just all the way your dad thought when he said, stevie will never get married. Reporter and the way its supposed to be . And the way its supposed to be. And his way of delivering those messages was very effectively. But now he has a record to run on. Reporter judgment on that record and, in turn, america itself, has been harsh. America doesnt have the same position that it has in terms of his morals. Reporter a recent Pew Research Survey found americas reputation at a record low and little confidence in President Trumps handling of world affairs. Do you think the world is moving past america as this super power . I dont really. American leadership has been very important to europe, and i think to the world, and if it is not there, you worry that the world will become more insecure, more dangerous, conflicted place. Reporter for one thing, russia believes republican administrations are less likely to criticize their human rights abuses and silencing activists. But Vladimir Putin if nothing but pragmatic. He recently signaled he could work with either candidate and publicly praised them both. Reporter one sign that the kremlin is prepared for a biden win is this comedy sketch on russian state tv. It features a digitally manipulated President Trump unemployed and looking for work. Sometimes ill say, wow, thats going to be a great story. How did they make their decision . An informed electorate is vital to a healthy democracy, Thomas Jefferson believed, but he and the founders left no instructions. Should we choose by studying candidate resumes or their debate performances. Should we think about who we want to have a beer with or who has better policies. There are no guidelines for making our choice in part because, at first, the presidency was a clubhouse election only proper white men made the choice, and they knew the score. If they strayed, the electoral college, an even more exclusive club, guaranteed a good pick. Those men of reason, Alexander Hamilton explained, offered moral certainty that the office of president will never fall to the lot of any man who is not endowed with the requisite qualifications. That notion didnt last long. Instead of voters using reason to evaluate candidates for virtue and skill, reason was used to raciarationalize those who brought people to power.
