We have William Justice who will talk about allowing prayer to become action. Join us when we come back. Today we have bishop William Justice to discuss how we can prayerfully movein. We learn how to share the mercy of god with one another. The bishop has been in Northern California since his family moved west in 1946. He graduates graduated from saint gregory elementary and later from Saint Patricks cemetery in menlo park. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1968 and he served as a young priest and a number of San Francisco and San Mateo County parishes. That includes the Pastoral Ministry and most recently the victory of clergy. In 2008, he was named an auxiliary minister by Pope Benedict the 16th. Its a pleasure to have you here with us. Its a pleasure to be here. Host we are talking about the year of mercy and when pope francis declared it, i know his words were so inspiring to us. Even as you became a bishop, you had in your coat of arms that this endures for ever and this message of mercy is very important to you. When you hear pope francis declare this, was there anything that stood out that you were inspired by and stood by . It was a core of what we needed to live out in our lives. Especially as priests and bishops to minister in a way that is healing and forgiving and carrying. That is mercy. So, gods mercy endures forever as part of that. As i reflect back, i wanted to help people and share gods mercy with people. That goes back to the 60s when i entered the seminary. That has always been with me for the partial parishes and the world needs gods mercy and i enjoy and love to share that. What happens is they give you mercy back and it helps me to be a better person and priest. Buyin responding to pope francis with this mercy has people responding heartfelt lead to it. Are there any words of pope francis that have inspired you or stood out to you that you have carried with you throughout this year of mercy . Number one is his challenge. Number one in the beating challenges the mercy and we have to have heart. And in that, mercy is the way to share that. Had we share the heart of god that we meet in jesus christ, which is mercy . That sticks with me. And those words of pope francis that mercy is the beating heart of the gospel. I think of the images of the sacred heart. I remember the first time i was in rome. There was that image of the sacred heart. But, that image, and others like it, thats what i think of when i think of mercy as the beating heart of the gospel. In the catholic tradition, this image can be startling and yet, this is what we are called to be. To put forth love and put forth that heart first and foremost into our ministries and everything we do and say. One of the most beautiful churches in paris celebrates the revival of french catholicism. What is the image, it is the sacred heart. That is spread all over the world with the missionaries from france. They have this at heart with the beating heart. Host it seems so many people are starving for the message of love which is at the core of the message. There is love god and love one another and love yourself. This is first and foremost, the most important thing. What it leads to is the dignity of the person and the dignity of the group or the nation, or whatever. The culture is meeting the face of god. There is the culture of healing and giving and giving mercy and dying for us and rising that we might have life to the fullest. We touch the dignity of each person. Our own dignity and the person and there is kind of like a love relationship going back and forth between each person we care for or treat as a human being and gots love and gods beating heart. Definitely. To extend that love and to be present with other people and everything we are doing takes a lot of attention and i think how we do that is we will talk more about that after we come back after this short break. Welcome back to mosiac. We are joined by bishop William Justice to talk about this year of mercy and how we can prayerfully enter this year ofe mercy and transform that into interaction. When i think about pope francis, especially. Its not just his words that we were talking about in the last segment which has resonated with people, it is the heart he brings to. It is just what he brings to him. Im working in Young Adult Ministry with young adults 1840. When we work with people, i often hear the question about how to pray . It is learning how to pray in this way that transforms us. I think a lot of People Struggle with that. You can learn our father and hail mary and the words of it. You can learn that mass is a prayer and you can learn the actions of that and what the sacrament means. You can learn all of that, but without this which i think pope francis is a good example of. It can all become very meaningless and hollow. And, that is when i think a lot of people go to mass and how do we bring our heart into that and cultivate this kind of interior life . Im wondering how you would share with our viewers, what is prayer and how do you begin to cultivate a prayer life . Somewhere along my 48 years of priesthood, someone gave me a prayer which i love. It is sitting down with jesus or with the father and having a cup of tea with him or a glass of wine or a beer or maybe chocolate chip cookies and milk, or something. It is a conversation between the god who made us and loves us and who is merciful to us and who fills us with his spirit and ourselves. And, god is love. And in first john, it says, you have nothing to fear. People who are afraid are not filled with love yet. Just to be able to relax with god. Maybe it is a hike or maybe a beautiful bench at the Golden Gate National recreation area. It might be in your room. And just to relax and say, here i am lord and i have come to listen to you. And one thing is that if you are having tea or a glass of wine, or something, with god, the thing to remember is that god may have some things to say to you, or to us, that may be more important than what we have to say to god, although important. Just pick up the scriptures and read a passage light, the lord is my scepter shepherd, there is nothing i shall want, and so on. And that means reading the scriptures until something hits you. That could be prayer. It is also sometimes, if it is a tragedy that has happened or getting the moods and saying lord, here i am, help me. That is the other part of the psalm. Even though i work walk through the deepest and darkest valley, i fear no evil because you are there with your rod and your staff to give me courage. What is fun, i had one teacher who told me the staff used to pound on the ground to say to that sheep, you are not alone in this darkness and the thunder stones. The rod used to hit them on the rear end to tell them not to run backwards into go forwards. Always forward. That is part of prayer. To walk in the valley of darkness, but knowing there is love. Then, there is the liturgical prayer and all of that. Not all of that, it is very important. Host i love that you are saying first and foremost it is a conversation with another being, god. Which is beyond our comprehension and being a dynamic person. That we cant control. That is the hardest part of it is to respect the otherness of god. That he is another being and when you sit to pray, sit with god and being in aware of that awareness. When i first tried to do that, it was disarming because i was so used to filling the space with thoughts and my needs and my concerns. But to just sit with god and allow god to be god and just sit there. It is like the priest who goes to the back of the church that is empty and he sees a gentleman sitting in the back. Four days, he sees him staring up at the tabernacle. Finally, he interrupts him one day and says, what are you doing . Im so sure so many catholics know the story. I look at him and he looks at me and he is just sitting in the presence of god. You know, that is a hard first step of prayer, to get to that place. Maybe the first part is that conversation that you were talking about. That resonates with so many young adults, 1840. Just sitting down with god is getting close to that friend. More than a friend, it is god. More than that is if we let god love us and speak to us in a conversation then hopefully that empowers us to go out and see the grandeur. I think it is Saint Ignatius and i may have the wrong Saint Ignatius here. Any it said the glory of god is a human being fully alive. If you like to play soccer or tennis or going to a beautiful spot and just like when you see yosemite from inspiration point, you say why why thinking wow . You see people injured or treated like slaves, or whatever. You can say, thats wrong because i have touched the grandeur of god. Host we can respond when we have that. Thats what we will talk about when we come back. How this love in this relationship with god who loves us to share that mercy with one another. Join us when we come back after this short break. Host welcome back to mosiac. I am angela and with me is bishop justice. We were just talking about how in port and it is that whatever works of mercy we are engaging in, to have that spirit of prayer and bring that prayer into it. You know, i think about how when st. Paul says and uses the metaphor of the body of christ and we are all members. People will hear about different needs in the world. Some people want to go right away and other try to pray from where they are. I think about how you respond and if it is motivated by prayer , you cant go wrong. And how god is calling us to love our neighbors. In earlier potions of this on mosiac , we talked about with this year of mercy being talked about by pope francis. We are called to be missionaries of mercy. Two missionaries, yes. Host how do you understand ss invitation to us to live that mission of mercy in the world. Then when people are looking to them to put that into action, how do you understand that . Well, in the prayer for the year of mercy that the pope approved and wrote, he said lord jesus christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly father and have told us that whoever sees you sees him. Jesus shows us your face and we will be saved. So, that is what i see. So in prayer, filled with the holy spirit, we are able to see the face of jesus through the scriptures and see it more deeply. His call to be of service and to recognize the dignity of each human being. The call that we are our brothers keeper in the best sense of that. Someone is keeping us. And, in that, it pushes us to be of service and to put into action the mercy. Whether it is a young couple that i know who just had their first child and they are still goo goo goo. You can see without sleep it is wearing on them. I was talking to the father the other day and he just said, it is all worth it because she is so cute. That is a simple way of putting, i dont mind doing this. Even though, i will be glad when this part is over. It says that we cannot just pray and there is no reaction that goes out and cares for people and seeing the face of jesus in people and therefore the face of the father who is full of mercy. Host there are moments as a new parent that it is difficult, but you know it is worth it and it is worth whatever you are sacrificing. Then, there are people where it is really hard to see that. Even more so, even during this year of faith where there has been challenge i have been wrestling with in myself. The people that are most difficult to see the face of christ in, for me personally, because of whatever i have going on in my own heart. It is difficult for me to see. Yet, i am called to love them and share that same mercy with them. In this climate as we come up on an election which is always heated and can be so difficult. Yet, i feel the conversation is changing too. To hear christians here about how we love one another in this process. I think a good example is in the first few months of the popes papacy where he flies to the island where so many people were fleeing from africa and the middle east to get onto italian territory so they might have hope of a new life. And he goes and he speaks to them and he hugs them and he put into action that mercy. Also, with the washing of the feet. Host yeah, of the prisoners. It didnt matter that they were from different faiths or some were women and some were men. And, just that whole sense of caring. And you know, bringing back from the last island he went to near turkey and he brought back a family. Host yes. It didnt matter they were muslim and the basic reason was they had their papers and could go. Now they are being cared for and that is the future of action and mercy. Host yes. Thank you so much bishop justice. There are so many wonderful examples from pope just pope francis. Thank you for sharing this time with us and helping us to learn how we can develop an interior life to see god and one another. Thank you for joining us.
