I want to thank everybody for the tremendous support. Im going to walter reed hospital. I think im doing very well, but were going to make sure that things work out. The first lady is doing very well. Reporter cbs news has learned President Trump is experiencing mild symptoms including a low grade fever. The president did not go to the emergency room here at walter reed but went instead directly to the president ial suite. White house chief of staff mark meadows spoke to reporters earlier in the day. He continues to be not only in good spirits, but very energetic. Reporter the president s doctor says he is fatigued and has been given a regeneron antibody cocktail. Campaigning in Michigan Democratic president ial nominee joe biden who has tested negative since the news broke offered prayers and well wishes. The news is a reminder that we as a nation need to do better in dealing with this pandemic. Reporter during the first debate tuesday biden and the president shared the stage for 90 minutes. While the president stays at the Medical Center his covid19 infection has raised questions of who else might have been exposed. Late friday former trump counselor Kellyanne Conway treated that she has tested positive for covid19. After president ial aide hope hicks tested positive wednesday, white house officials deemed it safe for President Trump to attend a fundraiser inew jersey on thursday. The president has tweeted the first time from inside walter reed saying, going well i think. Thank you to all. Love. That last part in all caps. Well, also tonight the Trump Campaign has confirmed the president s Campaign Manager has now also tested positive. Many of the political figures who announced positive tests attended last saturdays nomination ceremony for amy coney barrett. Thats utah senator mike lee sitting right next to Kellyanne Conway. Lee and North Carolina senator thom tillis who was also at the white house on saturday have also tested positive. Tonight we learn President Trump is now being treated with a drug produced by foster city based gilead sciences. Hes now receiving remdesivir which has been shown to shorten hospital stays for some covid patients. The president is also receiving an unapproved antibody drug. Its being tested in 70 locations including here in the bay area. Kpix5s Andrea Nakano joins us with a closer look at the treatment. Reporter one of the Clinical Trials for this antibody cocktail produced by a Company Named regeneron is taking place in stanford. The trial is looking at whether or not this treatment can prevent the disease from becoming deadly. President trump has already received aggressive treatment at the white house according to his physician, dr. Sean conley. The president got a single eight gram dose of an antibody cocktail created by regeneron through an iv. The treatment is aimed at stopping the disease from progressing by neutralizing the virus. On average people who got the infusion of antibodies got better in half the time than people who didnt get them. Reporter so far 275 patients have gone through the Clinical Trial, but more will have to be done to get fda approval. Whether the treatment will work for the president is still you know known. Doctors say it takes about three to five days from the date of exposure to really get sick. The odds are not looking good for him in terms of progression of disease and i would imagine he might need oxygen at some point. Reporter dr. Yvonne maldonado adds only 20 of those infected go to the hospital. She points out mr. Trump is over age 65, obese and has high cholesterol. The majority are older than 65 and the majority also have more than one underlying condition. He has three. Reporter while there are more than a dozen positive covid cases now among those who attended the Supreme Court nomination event on saturday, epidemiologist art riengold thinks it may be too soon to get an important picture of it the spread and says its a remainder how important it is to mask up and social distance. The fact that we have Public Officials continuing to engage in this behavior means either that they basically think this is all a hoax. Reporter since the treatment has not been approved by the fda, an average person would either have to go through the Clinical Trial or apply through the compassionate use program. Andrea nakano, kpix5. Of course, well keep you updated on the president s condition as we go along. Turning to weather now and a smoky start to the weekend here in the bay area and this is what it looked like in san jose today, an awful haze just hanging over everything. Meteorologist Brian Hackney joins us now. Hopefully he has some good news for the weekend. Yeah. I think things will get better slowly but surely and by next week temperatures will improve. Air conditions will improve, but it wont happen overnight quite literally because these winds are still a problem. Weve got northwesterlies on the way stronger than they were tonight and you can see the forecast direction of those winds are pushing the fire exactly in the direction that they dont want to go, which is down into more populated areas. So thats going to create problems for the firefighters tomorrow. Overnight tonight the winds are not too bad, but the smoke concentration does get ushered out of much of the bay area. Look at the coast and also almost out to the east bay. Thats by tomorrow night at 6 00. So the worst of the smoke is east of much of the bay area, not so much for the east bay, and look at santa rosa as we run this smoke concentration loop on. Youll see that the plume curls back over the north bay by sunday night at 6 00. So its not great news for the north bay. Its not a big surprise, but the onshore push does mean air quality will improve as we get through the weekend. Still got spare the air alerts posted through tuesday and the forecast is coming up in a few minutes including you havent heard this word in ages the potential for rain in the bay area. Well talk about that in a few minutes. Sounds good. Thank you. On the fire watch now, the glass fire has already destroyed nearly 200 homes and that number is expected to grow. Tonight kpix5s kenny choi is near calfires headquarters in st. Helena to explain. Reporter calfire crews have been strategically placed along highway 29 where there has been some activity throughout the day on the outer limits of the city threatening and destroying homes. In steep terrain and in the dark dozers eliminating as much fuel and creating secondary control lines along highway 29 northwest of calistoga. Its been very difficult for us to place good direct control lines in there. Reporter the nonstop work to protect the more than 28,000 homes still threatened tonight. Truck here, truck on the road over there and yeah, it seems like its well covered. Reporter early this morning the fire ripped through this home on tucker road on the outskirts of calistoga. With dry, strong winds forecast, a red flag warning extending into saturday morning. Thats the point where were seeing a northwest push of wind. Unfortunately it has not subsided in velocity. Reporter over the last 24 hours the winds did not pick up and werent as strong as initially forecast. That allowed crews to put in some more control lines and suppress activities in parts of polk valley. Theres a line cut behind the property here that goes several miles. So maybe that will help. The valley floor, 29 corridor is still under attack. We have a lot of industry in there populated in that area. Reporter multiple agencies responsible for the official estimate of structures damaged have only been able to survey about 30 of the burned areas. Calfire set up a mobile Retardant Base where helicopters can swoop down now and pick up that retardant like they do for water drops. Thats been placed in the eastern zone of the fire closer to anguin and towards polk valley where they expect theyll need it the most in the coming days. Kenny choi, kpix5. In yountville normally youd see picnic tables like these packed on a friday, but the fires are keeping everyone out. Here covid19 and wildfires are doubly devastating to an economy really built on tourism and tainted grapes from all of the smoke could make things even worse. 80 of the wineries in the napa valley are direct to consumer. Were just heartbroken for loss of wineries, loss of peoples homes and lives, heartbroken for the harvest, you know, and all that piled on top of the pandemic. Its a lot to take. Still ahead on kpix5 some new details emerging on a deadly shooting that sent union square shoppers running for safety. Tonight police say its part of a growing problem in the area. Staggering new statistics show the pandemic taking a disproportionate toll on working women. Honestly some days its, yeah, theres tears. And growing concern tonight over the possibility that two major northern californ say yes. To the best bargains ever at ross yes oh, yeah yep. Yesss savings on savings on savings . Tonight weve learned one area of San Francisco has seen a spike in robberies and thefts. It comes after yesterdays shooting in union square. The man who died is suspected of taking part in an attempted armed robbery. Kpix5 reporter betty yu is here with more. Betty . Liz, that deadly shooting happened in front of several witnesses in union square. Although crime is down overall in San Francisco, we are seeing more robberies and thefts in the area as the city loosens coronavirus restrictions. This is cell phone video of Police Performing cpr on the suspect. Moments earlier they say he tried to rob a man on geary street across from neiman marcus. Police responded around 5 p. M. Thursday after hearing gunshots. They found a 21yearold man hit by gunfire. You can also see an officer standing near three guns on the sidewalk which they recovered as evidence. Witnesses told police the attempted robbery went south when things turned physical. It resulted in the suspect getting shot. He later died at the hospital. Ive been down in union square for many, many years and really its the first time i heard about somebody getting killed down here on the street. So i guess things are probably getting a little bit more dangerous and worse. Today San Francisco police said it is saturating union square with more Police Officers following the shooting and this evening their presence was hard to miss whether on foot or in police cruisers. While crimes overall are down dramatically year over year, certain crimes in Central District which includes union square are up as of late. For example, cases of larceny theft nearly doubled after stores first reopened during the pandemic. And run crimes are one of the biggest problems for union square stores. Between july and august this year both robbery and theft cases jumped about 30 . I guess ill be more i would look around more, take more notice of my surroundings, but i wouldnt act differently, you know. It makes me feel safer to see just cops in the area. Police say the victim in yesterdays attempted robbery was not injured. Tonight supervisor aaron peskin said he wants to assure residents and tourists union square is safe and that shooting death was a rare occurrence. Betty, thank you. The pace of the u. S. Economic recovery continues to taper off. Labor Department Says the economy added 661,000 jobs in september, fewer than expected and a big drop from the summer months. The Unemployment Rate did fall to just under 8 , but that does not include more than 1 Million People who left the workforce entirely. More than threequarters of those were women. And a new study by the lean in group finds that women are uniquely impacted by this pandemic. One in four say that they are ready to downsize their job or quit entirely. The study has been conducted for the past six years and this is the first time that researchers say that more women are leaving the workforce than men. I have had to go back on my duties at work. I had leadership responsibilities that i had to give up for this and honestly, some days, yeah, theres tears. 70 of fathers and heterosexual couples, dual career couples think theyre doing equal percent of work as their partners. Only 44 of mothers feel the same. So theres clearly a discrepancy there. On the fire watch tonight california is prepared to hit a stunning stone in this years record breaking wildfire season. Nearly 4 million acres have burned just this year alone. Flames have scorched an area larger than the state of connecticut. 31 people have been killed and hundreds of homes torched. Tonight crews are fighting to prevent a mega fire merger that would smash records. Check out the burn areas of the 949,000acre august complex fire in mendocino and lake counties and the 56,000acre zogg fire in shasta county. Tonight the fires have burned within nine miles of each other. If both fires fuse together, the august complex would swell to more than 1 million acres. Its a milestone once unthinkable. Hard to believe weve lost in this state 4 million acres just this year alone. Its approaching ten times the size of the fires we had last year to this point in the season. Its incredible the way things have exploded this year. And weather may finally begin to help a bit. So well get into that. First the numbers around the bay area show uniform haze, but that should also be improving as we get into later tomorrow and sunday for much of the bay area, but not all. The numbers right now are still warm in parts of the bay area as we overlook the city of San Francisco. Concord is still warm. San franciscos down to 58 degrees, santa rosa 57. At least temperatures are down a couple degrees compared to where they were last night at this time. Closer to the shore line theyve really plummeted. The smoke concentration shows a very robust onshore flow by saturday night wiping away the smoke from the immediate coastline and as time goes on, that inland push really begins to take it out in the east bay, too. So almost the entire bay area gets improved air quality, but not up in the north bay close to the fires. The air quality forecast for saturday is spare the air day. In fact, it will be spare the air right through tuesday, worst air quality in the north and east bay tomorrow. It will improve in the east bay sunday, but the central, south bay and Santa Clara Valley will all see better air tomorrow. Why are we showing you a hurricane . Should be the last thing on our mind. Well, thats just a batch of high clouds, but if we pull way back, you can see weve got a category 4. Thats hurricane marie spinning out in the pacific right now, not a factor, but it could be a factor. This is pretty much the bureau of positive thinking, but who knows . There are some models that are suggesting by next friday, saturday and sunday some of the moisture from this wont be a hurricane by then gets caught up in a trough that plunges out of the gulf, sends the moisture towards california with the idea that maybe a half inch to an inch of rain could unwind over the bay area. Wouldnt that be nice . We really needed rain last year to put out the fires we had in september. We got it. We could sure use some now, wont get it now. This is a big uncertainty, but maybe next weekend. At least its on the radar. So heres what well get, a warm night tonight. For tomorrow temperatures cool to the low 90s inland. Air quality improves tomorrow except for the north bay. Further cooling next week and a hint of rain next weekend. To do it by the numbers, down in the south bay well be in the 80s tomorrow. Thats a bit of a breath of fresh air, improving air quality there, moderate air quality near the east bayshore line, but farther inland the air quality is out to lunch again, mid90s. Its still hot in the east bay, but sunday distinct cooling. Up in the north bay low 90s will do it and for clearlake and cloverdale 90s. In the extended forecast well look at readings mostly in the mid80s by next week. So thats a distinct cooling trend, back to seasonal norms next week and improving air quality. So at least thats good news. Theres only one person who is elected to be the best sports talent emmy award in the bay area and that man is vern glenn. Checks in the mail, brian. Checks in the mail.
