Kenny . Reporter elizabeth, there are plenty of residents here who are staying put, you can understand why, because their homes mean so much to them. Throughout the day, we have seen air drops in this area, not too much air support, every once in a while, you will hear helicopters and cal fire says that is because the skies are smoky and gray and that limits the amount of air support throughout the day. We do hear the helicopters every once in a while. The bulldozers have come through, and created a line to protect some of these homes, on the ground, residents are helping each other out, before what could be a very long night and a big fight. Days ago, rogers sister lost her home in deer park. The one really special part of that was the American Flag was still flying. I am sorry. Reporter the glass fire has shifted directions and now his property to the north is closer to the raging inferno. You can see the helicopter above, up to the northwest direction, making some drops right now. I can see the flames right there, only a block away, right at the other side of the hill. She came back today to help her landlord and friend, doing what they can. Last night, i didnt sleep. I was just watching and cleaning gutters and moving all of the stuff away from the house is. When it comes to the last moment, i will take it with me. They got some help from roger who lives down the street who is a veteran in many ways. All of the other firefights before this are with bullets. Never leaving one behind, he helped his neighbors quickly setting up a springer system. It is not worth my life but on the other hand, if i can do whatever i can do to save the houses, i will do that. The wind will not shift. Tonight, i will not sleep. Kenny, as far as the people staying behind, has there been any impact on the firefight in terms of resources diverted for door knocks or even rescues . Reporter we do know that cal fire had to make some rescues and help in their evacuations today in this area and that does take away from the firefight and that is why they always ask residents to evacuate when those mandatory borders are issued. Here in the city and town of england, we certainly understand why some homeowners have decided to stay put. These flames that reached all the way to this line right here, that happened just a couple days ago, and some residents in this area said they saw the flames reaching this point, but it didnt get to the homes because they are working on trying to create more Defensible Space and they are hoping to do that one tonight. You have to be safe. Kenny, thank you. Still unclear how the main fire got started but check this out. We saw cal fire investigator on the scene, of this spot fire near oakville graves right off the side of the road. He was placing flags and evidence markers, and using an electronic scanning device at the base of a steep hillside. However, he wouldnt tell us much about exactly what he was looking for or what he found. Stay tuned. We now go to kpix five andrea, who is life where crews have shuts down a stretch of highway 29, in both directions, andrea . Reporter we are here off highway 29 and on a clear day, you would be able to see the town of calistoga at a distance here. This is the spookiest we have seen this area yet. Just down here, there is a hard closure there because of fallen trees and fire as you go further up into the mountain area, the firefighter that is there at the entrance of the road says homes are okay on the valley floor, but those that are up in the mountains are in danger. While there is an Evacuation Order in place and most of this area, douglas says he is under an evacuation warning and is staying behind to protect his home for now. He has about 200 feet of hose laid out in his front driveway, he is prepared to douse his home with water from his pool if the flames come anywhere near his property. He says he is ready to go, has most of his valuables all packed up, but he is waiting until the very last moment to make sure he is able to take care of his donkeys. We dont know what is going to happen. This year has been really crazy. As you all know, everybody knows, there is fires everywhere. Reporter we have seen a few fire engines had up north here on 29, towards milltown, we are hearing that there is an active fire on the other side of the ridge here, and as you said, open yesterday, just so people from calistoga can evacuate to either the clearlake or middletown area but today, it is closed because the fire is moving north. Can . Thank you for that report andrea. Cal fire is concerned that a change in the winds could push the flames over the fire lines port kenwood, and glen ellen. If that happens, we could see new evacuations. Obviously if we do have winds that come through, and heat up the current fire activity that is within the perimeter that has been established in that area, there is a high probability that there will be a spot fire created from amber casts coming out of any of the heavy vegetation. Today, the governor visited st. Helena touring fire stricken areas around foothills , adventist elementary school. While there, he spoke about the states strategic Fire Suppression plan. Which includes forest management. We have now developed a partnership with the forest service, to double the amount of acreage, that we are actively managing. With prescribed burns, with vegetation management. You might have noticed that orange haze around the governor there, todays air quality in st. Helena is so bad, the Police Department on main street was now getting out masks to residents. City officials suggest wearing them at all times, if you are outdoors. Smoke from the fires is filling much of the bay area today, here is a view of san franciscos skyline. Kind of like looking through a dirty window, you can barely make out some of the buildings. A lot of people saying here we go again. Realizing now, on my lunch break, how bad this guy is getting again with the light orange sky. You know, just staying in mostly and avoiding even going out to outdoor dining. Spin it around 360, there is the Berkeley Hills, or where they used to be. You can see that it is as smoky there as it has been in a while. Extreme heat as well, in the bay area. Chief meteorologist, paul, i know you have been busy. We will talk about the heat in a second. uon. Ll track the smoke later i want to focus on the fire where the conditions around the glass fire itself. We are zoomed into the north bay and keep an eye on calistoga, st. Helena and glen ellen. Humidity levels have been in the teens today, which is very dry. As we wind the clock forward, those numbers go up overnight, but they dont much. The best we see is anywhere from 19 to 32 in the wee hours of friday morning, and then as temperatures heat up on friday we are talking about single digit relative humidity levels for much of friday afternoon. Not just around the fire itself but elsewhere in the north bay which is why all of the higher terrain around the bay area has the red flag warning continuing tomorrow. The winds havent been too strong today, but those are going to pick up tomorrow, they will be from the west and northwest so similar direction, but you can see the wind gust suddenly pulsing up as we head through the afternoon and early evening hours on friday and that would fan the existing fires and the hotspots within the glass fire and help any new fire to rapidly spread. Also a heat advisory, this has been extended through tomorrow, through 8 00 pm tomorrow evening, the temperatures will be in the 90s, the warmest spots around 100 degrees around the bay, mostly in the low to mid 80s. Not quite as hot today as what we anticipated because of all of the smoke but that is a steep price to pay for slightly cooler temperatures. We will track that smoke coming up in a few minutes. Because of the heat, an alert is in effect until 10 00 pm. The advice, set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher, and limit the use of major appliances. We invite you to stay with kpix five, kpix. Com and cbsn bay area for continuing coverage of the glass fire, and the reichstag conditions ramping up, the fire danger all across our region. As we begin another red flag warning, which started at 1 00 pm today and is expected to last until 6 00 am on saturday. The heat advisory for our area also has now been extended until friday night. Creating some challenging conditions for those on the front line, of this fire. For more on the status, lets begin with deputy chief Information Officer for this incident for cal fire, jonathan cox. Thank you, paul. Just a little bit of an update on this, i will start higher at the 30,000 foot elevation, currently there is 23 major fires burning across the state, the glass fire being one of the Top Priorities at this point due to the number of people evacuated as well as the threat of both structures and businesses. With that, we can confirm since august 15 that 3. 9 million acres of california has burned in a short amount of time. For point of reference the last highest year on record was about 1. 5 million acres and there is a highlight that we will be over the 4 million mark before the month is through unfortunately. With that, there is 17,000 firefighters battling fires across the state, obviously about 2000 of those are here on the incident in napa and Sonoma County. We have 118 aircraft, yesterday alone we dropped 80,000 gallons of retarded on this fire. Between the two counties. Obviously one of the biggest impediments we have is the visibility because of the smoke which is not only the Health Hazard but also it impedes our operations to actually be effective with our air fleet. Currently across the street, excuse me, across the state, there continues to be about 86,000 homes that are threatened , about 24,000 of those are here locally between the two counties. Additional evacuations are obviously still occurring, on this incident, driven by this red flag event that we are seeing throughout the area. A couple notable items, not related to Sonoma County but related to the incident as some of the Evacuation Orders today included portions of napa county and the closure of highway 29 between napa county and lake county. There is no current evacuations in lake county itself but that road was closed due to a fire activity impeding upon it, we also saw quite a bit of activity along the eastern flight of this fire toward the community of england. We will release our update within the next hour tonight, our damage inspection teams are out there and we anticipate the number of damage and destroy structure continuing to go up. The next update that we can expect from them and from the rest of the Management Team will be at 7 00 pm. With that, i will hand it back to you. Thank you, jonathan. Indeed, 4 million acres for the state of california is a very ominous record. And that is pretty stifling. For more on the glass fire, we will go to Cal Fire Division chief, ben nichols. Thank you, this evening, as expected, the winds are starting to come into the area, unfortunately we started off a day prior to the winds are writing with an increase in fire activity, in the east zone , that was giving firefighter resources a run for their money, and we started off the morning with structure defense, around anglin, and Spring Mountain in the east. So, we havent experienced that same activity here in the west zone, excuse me if there is too much background noise, i am here at the Sonoma County eeoc, but for the start of the day here at Sonoma County, things are looking well, as we enter into the period of the red flag here, obviously our concerns are without northwest wind, the perimeter in the sugarloaf state park area, and if that fire gets across the line that we have established down there, it will create a much larger area that we are going to have to fall back to, to capture the ridges that we need to contain this fire. So, that is our largest concern here in the west zone today. However, the wind, the prevailing winds are blowing the fires edge back in on itself, out in the sharp road, gates road area, and crews are continuing to reinforce the control lines that we have out there, to ensure that we hold that for the duration of the fire. The other item i have for you, the ray of good news out of this disaster, is that the 5 containment that we have on the fire, is the area that extends across the backside of rankin valley, skyhawk, hamel drive and over toward springlake. Crews are making great headway, and the low country over here on the east side of santa rosa, and are aggressively patrolling the area along the highway 12 court order to make sure there is no hotspot in and around those homes, so we can minimize the impact to the community. End of report. Thank you, ben. For further updates on the Sonoma County front, lets go to santa rosa fire chief, tony. Chief, thanks for being with us as always. Good evening everyone. Just a quick update for the santa rosa side, both jonathan and ben gave a great overview. We have a task force, structured group that is controlling the oakmont area as well as the Highway Patrol area, it has been mentioned there, to put out any hotspots that may pop up with this wind. The last thing we want is a secondary ignition to any structures, after the fire crew has gone through. Crews have been doing that, from day one. But, we continue to do that, as we know that the winds are going to cause other issues. And adele state park, i know people are worried about that. There is a good amount of crew in there, they have a lot of hose on the ground, and they are aggressively mopping up that area, to make sure that the wind doesnt create issues for us in any part of our community from and adele park. The next fire thing i would like to mention, is that the county has, they gave the fire service a pot of money for staffing, so thank you Sonoma County for that and we use it for all red flag up staffing events. This is one of those events where it is a two day long up staffing event, we are fortunate enough to squeeze out one task force out of all of that, all of the departments in the Sonoma County area, so there is five engines with a leader, and their sole purpose is to augment any initial attack fire. You are watching a live update with fire officials, giving updates on the glass fire burning in napa, and sonoma counties, and earlier in this press conference, they talked about the many fires that are burning across california, we will have a full update coming up tonight at 5 30 pm.
