A bombshell report apparently revealing a sharp discrepancy between the president s public image and private practices in business here in new york. The New York Times obtained data from the tax records he spent years trying to conceal. He shows it shows that hes paid almost no federal income taxes recently. Just 750 in 2016 and 2017 and nothing at all in 10 out of the 15 years before that. Data also shows he claimed major losses on his businesses even as he publicly said they were thriving. And that he may be under severe financial pressure in the next few years with hundreds of millions in loans reportedly set to come due. The president is forcefully denying the times report which cbs news has not verified. Paula reid is at the white house. Paula, these some are pretty extraordinary findings. Good morning, anthony. These are some extraordinary findings because they tell a very different story about the president and his business organizations than the one he has sold to the American Public over decades. According to these new documents in 10 of the previous 15 years, the president paid no income tax, largely because his businesses reported losing much more money than they actually earned. President trump in a press conference sunday denied a New York Times report that claims he only payed 750 in income tax in 2016 and 2017. Its totally fake news. Made up. Fake. We went through the same stories. People asked me the same questions four years ago. I had to litigate this and talk about it. Totally fake news. Reporter when asked how much he did play, he continued to tease the eventual release of his long sought tax returns. I look forward to releasing that and many things. Im going to release many things and people will be really shocked. Reporter the New York Times obtained tax return data extending over more than two decades and found mr. Trump paid lower taxes using questionable tactics, including a 72. 9 million refund that is currently being audited by the irs. While claiming losses for 15 of his namesake businesses, including his golf courses, mr. Trump has maintained a lavish lifestyle by taking Tax Deductions on what some people would consider personal expenses. Including housing, aircraft and 70,000 in hairstyling for television appearances. Even though President Trump vowed to no longer pursue any new business once elected, according to the New York Times, he made 73 million from foreign deals during his first two years in the white house. In a statement to cbs news, allen garten, an attorney for the trump organization, said the New York Times story is riddled with gross inaccuracies. Over the past decade, the president has paid tens of millions of dollars in personal taxes to the federal government. He also said the times rejected our repeated request that they show us any of the documentation. Though the paper says it declined to provide records in order to protect its sources. The president has long refused to release his tax returns. The first president in modern history not to do so. I will release my tax returns against my lawyers wishes when she releases her 33,000 emails that have been deleted. As soon as she releases them, i will release. I will release my tax returns. And has frequently made his argument against releasing them. Theyre under audit, and when theyre not, i will be proud to show them. Reporter however, an audit does not prevent the president from releasing his records. Democrats seized on the new reports. Chuck schumer tweeted, raise your hand if you paid more in federal income tax than President Trump . These new records suggest that the financial pressures on President Trump are mounting as hundreds of millions of dollars in loans he personally guaranteed are coming due. Now usually excessive debt is seen as a potential National Security vulnerability for Public Servants because it could open you up potentially to outside influence. Now in addition to that irs audit, the president and his Justice Department continue to fight subpoenas by new york state seeking other tax records and financial documents, all of which could potentially open the president up to criminal liability. Tony . Paula, i would remind people that federal income tax in particular pays for the military, the fbi, border patrol, farm programs, veterans benefits, student benefits, unemployment. It touches really all of us. Thank you very much. There are 36 days now to go until the president ial election and the president s taxes are among the many issues that are sure to come up at the first debate tomorrow night. Ed okeefe is covering the fireworks from the site of the debate in cleveland. Good morning to you. The Biden Campaign is wasting no time capitalizing on this tax report . Within hours of that New York Times report, the Biden Campaign was out with a new ad contrasting the tax burden of average working americans with the 750 in income tax the president paid. And theyre also out with new Campaign Buttons that read, i paid more income taxes than donald trump. Quick work there by the Biden Campaign. This comes as the candidates prepare for their first debate tomorrow night. Aides say that traveling the country dealing with a hostile news media and just being president every day is enough debate prep for mr. Trump but were told as he travels the country, he and his country are using flash cards and old video of biden to get ready. Biden has been doing inperson and virtual prep with advisers and campaign officials. The debate comes as new cbs news Battleground Tracker polls show the race remains tight in key states. Georgia is a tossup with mr. Trump up just a point. North carolina sees biden up two. The Supreme Court vacancy is one of six topics set to be covered tomorrow night, including the economy, the pandemic, race and violence, the biden and trump records and the integrity of the elections. To give you a sense of the precautions being taken, everyone here on the campus of the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western University that is here has to have been tested negative and must be wearing one of the medical masks. The only three people not wearing a mask are the president , joe biden and the moderator. Just want everybody to stay safe. Tomorrow night is going to be very interesting. Thank you, ed. Judge Amy Coney Barrett will meet with lawmakers on capitol hill this week after the president formally introduced her as his Supreme Court pick over the weekend. Its part of a whirlwind attempt to get her confirmation before election day including hearings scheduled to start october 12th. Nancy cordes reports from outside the Supreme Court. I will stand with her, fight with her. Reporter defending his Supreme Court pick last night, President Trump predicted a swift confirmation. I think shes going to rule on the law. I think shes going to be a great justice for many years to come. Reporter Amy Coney Barrett is a 48yearold mother of seven who has served as a federal Appeals Court judge since 2017. In her 20s, she clerked for the late conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and considered him a mentor. His judicial philosophy is mine, too. A judge must apply the law as written. Judges are not policymakers, and they must be resolute in setting aside any policy views they might hold. The hypocrisy reporter democrats worry barrett would side with conservative justices on issues like abortion, immigration and obamacare. Reporter minority leader Chuck Schumer is one of several Senate Democrats who say they wont even meet with barrett. A vote for Amy Coney Barrett is a vote to decimate the health care that so Many Americans need. Reporter barrett still teaches law at her alma mater, notre dame. A letter signed by all her colleagues in 2017 described her as a brilliant teacher and scholar who addresses problems without ideological or political preconceptions. What republicans dont want is a repeat of the spectacle surrounding Justice Brett kavanaughs confirmation. I hope we have a respectful process. We dont need another freak show. Reporter no Supreme Court nominee has ever been confirmed this close to a president ial election. In our Battleground Tracker, more than 50 of voters in North Carolina and georgia say that this vacancy makes the election even more important and, anthony, makes them more likely to vote. All right, nancy. Thank you. Strong winds are driving a new fastmoving wildfire in northern californias wine country. The socalled glass fire began yesterday before dawn and burned through acres of vineyards and threatened hundreds of homes. One hospital had to evacuate dozens of patients when the flames got dangerously close. Jonathan vigliotti is tracking the damage. The glass fire more than doubled in size as the sun went down sunday bearing down on the town of deer park, which is under mandatory evacuation orders. Warning. Fire evacuation in progress. Officials ordered hundreds out of their homes early sunday morning as the glass fire destroyed buildings and threatened neighborhoods in northern Californias Napa county. Theres a mountain right there. And you can see the flames. And it was just really scary because it was just like a line of flames. Reporter hospital officials in the town were forced to use ambulances to evacuate some 55 patients as a precaution. The area is home to some of northern californias biggest wineries which have seen multiple fires in recent years. Almost seems like year after year after year. It is becoming more of a norm, but this is the closest its ever been for us. Reporter high winds fueled the flames throughout the day, destroying decadesold wineries. Its cremation. Reporter craig battuellos family has raised grapes in st. Helena for more than a century. Ive hunted that a lot. I know all the trees and everything. And they were dissolved. Reporter mandatory evacuation orders were also issued in Shasta County just west of redding, california, after another fastmoving blaze grew to 7,000 acres within hours on sunday burning multiple structures. High winds continue to be a major threat in this area as red flag warnings are in effect until this evening. For cbs this morning, jonathan vigliotti, los angeles. The coronavirus is spreading faster in the United States, at least 29 states are seeing an increase in the average number of new cases per day. Five of them set new oneday records over the weekend, including new york. The former u. S. Epicenter of the pandemic reported more than 1,000 new cases in a day for the First Time Since june. Newly revealed body camera video shows what appears to be the immediate aftermath of the police raid that killed Breonna Taylor in louisville. The video obtained by vice news seems to show a possible violation of Police Policy after the shooting. Cbs news obtained other evidence showing the one shot fired by taylors boyfriend may not have hit an officer as the kentucky general claims. Adriana diaz reports a former detective who faces criminal charges in this case seems to be in this newly released video. Reporter over the weekend, never before seen body camera footage obtained and rlgsed by vice news appears to show Brett Hankison who was involved in the raid that killed Breonna Taylor walking into the crime scene after the incident. According to vice, thats him with the flashlight asking about shell casings. Theres thats ours, it looks like. Id back out and cbs has not been able to verify the video. If hankison was at the scene, that would be a violation of Police Policy which states officers involved in shootings are to be isolated from all nonessential individuals for the remainder of the initial investigation. Tremendously shocking. Reporter angela pinto is an activist with the group until freedom that workss with taylors family. He says the video is troubling. It looks like, and i think its clear in some instances that a lot of departmental policies were being violated. Reporter an attorney for the officer being shot shows the body camera videos dont show anything substantial. The officer still acted in legal selfdefense. This state document races additional questions. A portion of the Kentucky State Police ballistics report obtained by cbs news appears to not support state attorney general Daniel Camerons assertion that taylors boyfriend, kenneth walker, definitively shot Sergeant Jonathan mattingly the night taylor was killed. The bullet that hit mattingly was neither identified nor eliminated as having been fired from walkers gun. Steve romines says hes seen the full report. Theres evidence that the shot hit the carpet in the apartment. Reporter walker was charged with attempted murder of a Police Officer but the case was dropped without prejudice. Walkers cocounsel fred rick moore says this means the state could charge him again if they see fit. They cant prove what kenny knew when he fired the shot, right . Which is the element essentially for attempted murder. Reporter its unclear if the ballistics report or the body camera footage were presented to the grand jury which decided wednesday not to charge anyone with taylors death. They have filed a motion for all the evidence presented to them to be released. An attorney for Brett Hankison who will be, arraigned today has never seen a ballistics report, adding, unlike a lot of lawyers, i do not try my cases in the press. I try them based on evidence in the courtroom. The internal investigation is ongoing. So many questions in this case. Steve romines when he was here last week used the word coverup to describe this case. Thats one of the reasons people are still marching in the streets because they want full transparency to see what evidence the grand jury was presented with. Absolutely. A lot of protesters are talking about that exact thing. But prosecutors like the attorney general say no such thing happened and that the officers here acted in legal selfdefense. All right. Well, questions continue. Thank you very much, adriana. Ahead, a water emergency in Southeast Texas. A rare and deadly organism in the water supply kills a little 6yearold boy. Bomb shell report the president s income tax face scrutiny after the New York Times says he barely paid any in recent years. What could mean for the president ial debate . Battle ground state voters. We asked a key group in pennsylvania about the upcoming election. Why some say theyre not voting the same way they did in 2016. And the meaning of mariah. Mariah talks about racism and how she overcame adversity. Shes on fire. Heres todays eye opener at 8 00. The bomb shell report revealing a sharp discrepancy between the president s public image and private practices in business. According to new documents in ten of the previous 15 years the president said no income tax largely because his businesses reported losing more money than they earned. Within hours of the report, the Biden Campaign was out with a new ad contrasting the tax burden of working americans with the 750 income tax the president paid. It appears to show the immediate aftermath of the raid that killed Breonna Taylor. Its unclear if the body camera footage was documented. They filed a motion for all the evidence presented to them to be released. Deep ball. Wide open touchdown. Russell wilson on fire right now. The quarterback threw five touchdown passes. Wilson has 14 touchdown passes in the first three games. A new nfl record. This one is good for the touchdown. Oh, that was a good sunday for russell wilson. Hes married to sierra and they recently had a baby boy, and the babys name is win. No pressure on that kid. I think thats nice. Good morning to you. Just ahead of the first president ial debate, a new bomb shell report on the president s taxes. Its raising questions about the success of his businesses. The New York Times reports it obtained data for more than two decades of the president s tax returns and he paid just 750 in federal income tax in 2016 and 2017. He also reportedly paid no income tax in ten of the previous 15 years claiming he lost more than he made during those reports. Hes reportedly benefitted from a nearly 73 million tax refund which is now the subject of a decadelong irs audit. And he reportedly has hundreds of millions in debt due in the next four years. Mr. Trump slammed the New York Times article as fake news in a statement a spokesman for the Trump Administration said, quote, this is just another misleading story in the times ongoing Smear Campaign in the runup to the election. Trump and biden will finally face off tomorrow night on the very same stage. The first of the three president ial debates is typically the highest rated and has the highest stakes but can it change the race at this point . Ed okeefe joins us from the debate site in cleveland. Good morning. What will you be watching for . Look, theres little debate about the differences between trump and joe biden n. In this debate, it could go in all directions. There will be at least one big moment we all remember. Here we go again. Theres no debate. Such a nasty woman. Here one line can define a campaign. Are you better off than you were four years ago . And a candidate. Senator, youre no jack kennedy. In 1960 the candidates need no introduction. Jfk won, if you were watching. Radio listeners couldnt see Richard Nixons pale face, the nervous pats . In our social media age, moments tend to be more powerful. Mr. Trump, i want to start with you. 60 minutes John Dickerson has had a front row seat. Binders of full women. In 2012 trump ridiculed what was seen as a winning debate moment for president obama in 2012 over the course of years has not survived so well. But the format has held up. Even if theres debate, if the events live up to their name. Do you consider these to be debates . These are not really debates. Really, they are joint appearances or interviews held in parallel. But joe bidens first question in the 2008 v. P. Debate came from sarah palin. Can i call you joe . A setup for this line. Say it aint so, joe. Humor helped Ronald Reagan stop questions about his age. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponents youth and inexperience. And its not just candidates in the hot seat. More astronauts have traveled to outer space than have sat in a moderators chair for a president ial debate. Cbs moderated the last Vice President ial debate. Let me finish a sentence. You can feel the temperature sort of rising. Gentlemen, i need to ask you. I had a reflexive moment where it was basically pulling it out of my parental tool box. Gentlemen, the people at home cannot understand either one of you when you speak over each other. And remember, sometimes its not something said but sarah palins wink. How long have i been at this, five weeks . Donald trumps looming stare, or al gores side as he crept up. Check out the look on george w. s face, or his father caught looking at his watch which emphasized the idea he was out of touch with the cares of normal people. How has National Debt personally affected each of your lives . Bushs answer didnt help. Im sure it has. I love my grandchildren. I want to there is a very interesting dynamic when candidates have to answer the questions of real people. Its harder for them to dodge. In this first debate there will be a sole moderator asking questions and while we expect it to look very similar to past debates, it may sound a little different because there will be fewer audience members there because of social distancing. That might mean less applause and cheering and past moderators think thats a good thing. I tend to agree. Thank you very much. And you can hear John Dickerson discuss other pivotal moments on the podcast. This morning were mourning the loss of a cbs news colleague. Mark served in the air force for 37 years, retiring as a major general. He was chairman of the National Transportation safety board for four years under president george w. Bush. In 2016, President Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton by less than 1 there. According to the website 538, pennsylvania looks like the single mostimportant state of this election. President trump has recently tweeted several times to what he calls the suburban housewife. He says theyll be voting for him and that, quote, biden will destroy your neighborhood and your american dream. We met up with six women from the philadelphia suburbs at a gym in plymouth meeting, pennsylvania, for a sociall distant conversation about that and other issues. Hi, my name is hannah. Im a conservative republican and one of my main issues that im passionate about is the prolife movement. My name is melinda. I was a lifelong republican, but i did not vote for trump in 2016. And i am now a democrat. My name is cynthia. Im a registered republican, but im really an independent. Im likely to vote for biden. Hello, im edith. Im a moderate democrat. The most pressing issues are they in and device ofness in the economy. My name is mary ellen. I was a longterm Democrat Committee person. I voted for trump in 2016, and i plan on voting for trump again. My name is debbie, im a democrat. I was a little disillusioned with politics, but i feel a little bit better especially since biden chose harris for his running mate. Reporter what was the most important issue that contributed to your decision . Debbie . The fact that i think biden is more sensitive toward peoples needs and to the middle class. I think trump is very about himself. My community is 100 democrat controlled, and i feel like ive been dealing with Just Lip Service people and not action. And ive thats why ive changed my viewpoint. Trump seems like the type of person that likes to just do it. Edith . Were all affected by the economy. Wed like to get a candidate and a president that would be able to rein in the pandemic, be able to help us get out of this difficult time, and i believe that biden will be that candidate. Cynthia . I dont like his denial of the magnitude of the pandemic. And therefore, i could not vote for him. I could never vote for President Trump because he has proven to be unfit for the presidency. He has lied. He has mishandled the pandemic. Hannah . I feel that his demeanor hasnt always been something that i align with, but i do align with his policies. Not a big fan of his twitter, but im not voting for someone on twitter, im voting for a leader for our country. Hannah, youre from a military family. Uhhuh. Reporter President Trump was reported to have said some fairly derogatory things about people who served including calling people who died in battle suckers. What was your response . What was your familys response to that . Honestly, its completely unacceptable. If it is true, then its deeply disheartening. So is that going to sway my vote between these two people . No. Its not enough . Its not enough. Reporter lets talk about the pandemic. How significant has the pandemic affected your lives . Significantly in all all ways. Reporter did all of you hear the audiotape of the president speaking about yes yes i would have handled it the same way. Im not going to panic somebody. You got a fire going on in the building i disagree you dont stand around and cry about it disagree grab everybodys hand and wi follow me. He hid the truth. He did it only for his own selfbenefit for reelection, this sort of thing. I am angry that he did that. He lied again. And i dont agree all politicians lie cynthia . He continues from my perspective to undercut the scientific community. And i come from the scientific community. I cannot tolerate that. Reporter okay. Hannah . While i agree that the pandemic hasnt been handled completely perfectly, i also know that trump has given a lot of power to the states. And the states have made their own decisions that have been not so great. So i think that while we really want to blame somebody, i dont think President Trump is that person. President of the United States telling people to inject themselves with clorox, thats a problem. To me its an embarrassment to the United States the way he has handled this pandemic. And i think we would not have so many deaths if he had handled it differently. Reporter you are as suburban women among the most desired voters in the country right now. And are you are you god, thats wow. I feel if only we had known, right . Reporter so my question is President Trump has made a direct appeal saying that the democrats are going to ruin your neighborhoods. No. No. Not true. Reporter you dont no. No. I dont take it as a threat at all. Its just trying to build up fear. I think its a nonissue. Not an issue. Reporter are any of you worried about the integrity of this election . Im more concerned about the disenfranchisement of voters and their votes not being counted. I can tell you personally i will not be using the u. S. Mail to drop off my ballot. Ill go to a drop box. Ive been very concerned with the president constantly attacking the mail voting as being fraudulent. There was news ive read that virginia started early voting, and there were some rightwing people that showed up and were taunting the people in line. I think trump does not win, hes going to call it fraud. Hell say its not because of the mailin voting, its going to be a fraud if i dont win. Theres so much polarization within people, i dont think the selection is going to be that fun to go through. But im for it. I cant wait until november 4th is over so life can start to look a little normal, you know. Can only watch so many Gilmore Girls and little house on the prarie prairie. You know . Mary ellen wow. We asked all the women about the Supreme Court nominee and while some were happy and some upset, they said it will not have any impact on how theyre voting, what theyve decided. What a great group. Its fascinating to see voters thought process. And the progression over time. We talked to them at the beginning at the year i remember mary ellen yes. Fun to watch. The construction of the support for President Trump is interesting. Well, i dont like his demeanor, but thats not what im voting for. All politicians lie. The number of these women as you saw, cynthia did not vote for either cynthia didnt vote for Hillary Clinton or donald trump, she wrote in another name four years ago. She has decided shes going to vote for biden this time. Wow. Theres a progression there. And a number of these women have progressed in their views. I liked when you said your suburban vote is very important and they went whoa. That was a great moment. They were feeling the love so to speak from both candidates. Ahead, britains coronavirus hero on the big screen, captain tom tells us who should play his part in the upcoming movie about his life. Youre watching cbs this morning. Who should play captain tom . Somebody heroic. Stay with us. Ahead, you recognize the voice mariah carey gets deeply personal in a memoir about her life and career. She talks about motherhood and finding love ain. This is a kpix 5 news morning update. Good morning. We are continuing to follow breaking news this morning in the north bay. The shady fire burning in the hills east of santa rosa has prompted mandatory evacuations. Over not, the fire crept toward santa rosa and is pushing right up against highway 12. That is the road thousands of evacuees are using to escape. To napa county, the classifier has now exploded in size to 11,000 acres, up from 2500 last night. Evacuation orders are in effect for all of calistoga and parts of st. Helena. Just hours after the glass fire broke out yesterday, he that weezer lining up at the Crosswalk Community church in napa. That is where they are being sent for shelter and other assistance. Lets go live now to kpix 5s emily turner who was in santa rosa with the latest. Reporter the interesting thing here, in the last hour, is that cal fire has actually classified all of these buyers as glass fire. We are working to figure out why that is but there is the possibility and has been speculation with firefighters all morning that it is possible that it started at the classifier and then embers have blown across the valley and across the ridge line. Some houses have managed to be saved, others have not. Unfortunately, this is one that has not been saved. We were live earlier and this house was fully ablaze. Just one hour and half later, look at all that is left. It is pretty sad and devastating. At this point, justin said city limits. 13,169 homes, 607 commercial buildings all threatened. They have no idea exactly how many have been lost but they are working diligently just to try to figure out how they can save everything that is left in the midst of all of this wind that they are seeing. The wind will continue into the afternoon and evening hours. We will be perusing this entire neighborhood and making sure that we give you the latest from out here in santa rosa. As we continue, more evacuation orders being issued. We will bring that to you as we get them. I have been tracking the dangerous fire weather conditions across the north bay with a red flag warning that is in effect for the entire northbay. In a specifically that area where firefighters are trying to get a handle on glass fire, looking at gusts up to 30 Miles Per Hour , relative humidity values down to 10 . An extreme fire danger with the red flag warning for the northbay, the east bay hills, and valleys up until 9 00 tonight. I have seen gusts as high as 60 Miles Per Hour up in the Higher Elevations this morning and very low relative humidity values. Everything is so dry out there as well. We are dealing with extreme heat. Heat advisory in effect for most of the bay area for today. Daytime highs will be into the 90s to triple digits, even hotter compared to yesterday. Here is a look at those temperatures. 102 in concord. 101 in livermore. 100 in napa. Mid90s for oakland as well as san jose. 93 for a high in San Francisco with the offshore winds, we have the fires burning right now. We are looking at hazy skies and smoky conditions. A spare the air alert has been extended into today with unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups to the northbay, east bay, and santa clara valley. Here is a look at the extended forecast as we are looking at those hot conditions for today. Daytime highs 15 to 20 degrees above average for this time of year. Still warm to hot for tomorrow. We will begin to cool it down slowly with the ocean breeze kicking in especially near normal daytime highs as we look to the weekend. The wildfires have prompted a number of closures along the santa rosa area as well as the napa county area. I want to start with highway 12. Highway 12 shut down between santa rosa and glenallen, one of our largest areas. Highway 12 looks very congested right now. There was a lot of traffic in and around that area for folks trying to leave the area. We are starting to see delays along 101 also connecting on to or from highway 12. Keep that in mind. Highway 12, the closures are there as well as areas on montgomery drive, next to highway 12. Also affected is Sonoma County transit. Routes 30, 32, 34, and 40 have been suspended due to the wildfires. Just ahead, b. A. R. T. Has been dealing with major delays all morning long. They had equipment trouble on the track near the embarcadero. That has now been cleared. Still a 20 minute delay from pokes with captain tom and his daughter hannah this morning about his upcoming biopic. Reporter is the world ready for captain tom the movie . Thats a very good question. I must say very interesting to see that film. Whether were prepared for it i dont know. Reporter who would you like to play you, captain tom . The thing is we have no say in any of it reporter of course. Yes, we can dream. Maybe michael cain or Clint Eastwood or theres a few rolling around. Over the summer, youll remember, captain tom raised around 50 million for British Health care workers by walking laps in his garden before he turned 100 years old. As a reward, Queen Elizabeth made him sir tom. I love that moment right there. Yes. The among the names being mentioned for a young captain tom is what . Benedict cumberbatch which would be a great choice. Asked who would play him in later years . He said i dont know of any 100yearold actors. I look forward to that i like the range. Michael cain Clint Eastwood i dont know how he got in there. Everybody loves him. Yeah. Im rooting for michael cain personally. My choice, too. Tony . I have got the back story to a viral photo over the weekend. A fire station in florida became a hit on social media because for the first time in the 57 years of the department, thats the Palm Beach Gardens fire rescue department, they had an allfemale crew on assignment. That means the captain firefighter, the driver, the engineer, the rescue lieutenant, and the paramedic, all of them, they were all on duty, all women. It happened by chance. But of course not really by random chance. They got the assignment but had to be there to get the assig assignme assignment. A change from times past. Krystyna krakowski shared what the historic moment means to her. Its empowering. Were all about women empowerment. Its exciting. Its sad that thats not the norm, but its becoming the norm. A big deal. They showed up to work thinking it would be a regular shift. Looking around its all girls, and its a milestone. Thats really cool. A great picture and really cool. Another one of those who run the world . Girls. Who run the world . Thank you, beyonce, girls. The message to young women, dont let anyone scare you away from what you want to do. Exactly right. Were all for it. For my pick, were hearing from superstar mariah carey for the first time in her threedecade career. Shes talking about how she overcame early struggles before becoming the bestselling female artist of all time. The singer songwriter has a record 19 numberone songs, thank you very much, including we belong together, dream lover, and vision of love. I love all of them. Carey has more hits than any solo artists in history. She discuss the difficult moments in her childhood and relationships. Ahead of its release, she spoke to us, she said it was written for a little girl who never felt seen or heard. It was just about for me emancipating my inner child, the little girl that never really felt seen or heard. And you know, that wasnt famous and wasnt didnt have money and didnt come from means. You know, struggled with race and identity and issues, you know you said she was a scared little girl. Why was she so scared . Well, there was a lot of unrest in my household, if there was a household. And you know, i had difficulty with having come from such a s disfunctional family. I needed to heal myself and heal that inner child that i tried to keep alive through all of the dysfunction and mess. Listen, you grew up biracial in a white neighborhood. No big deal now. But there was a struggle for you to fit in. There was a series of things that happened to you that i thought was traumatic. You go to your friends house well, so it was my friends friends, and they were having a sleepover. And you know, they invited me. And mind you, we had to drive to this place which was like hours away to the hamptons, and so i was literally stuck there when that incident took place. Mariah, what happened . You know, so they pretty much got me in a room, cornered me, and started using the n word over and over and over. Did you feel that you had to straddle both worlds or be accepted in both worlds . I didnt really feel accepted in anyones particular world. Like in one of the songs that i its one of my favorite songs that ive done called outside. I talk about feeling ambitiguou without something to touch halfway. These are things ive been talking about for a long time. People are like, oh, shes talking in this book now. I really i always felt like i was expressing that. Your family life was complicated. I want to focus on your mother because i thought it was interesting when you said, listen, jealousy comes with the territory when youre famous. But when it comes from your moth mother, its very painful. Can you talk about that dynamic . I didnt know that your mom was a singer, too. Yes. My mother is a very talented singer. She went to juilliard. Shes an opera singer. Ive always credited her with exposing me to music with really kind of saying dont say if i make it, say when i make it. So i think, you know, theres its such a complicated relationship. It is complicated. And i also thought that it was very difficult to me to read because theres here you are, youre starting your career, and your moms singing andits like careful what you say. Thats why with my kids like i really try to acknowledge their talent and acknowledge when they, you know, draw a picture for me or sing or dance or anything that they do, i want them to know that its also all about them and their happiness. After reading your book, it seems like you want to be a different kind of mother. Am i correct about that . Yes, are you absolutely correct. You are absolutely correct. For me, its very important that the kids always feel safe and that they feel seen and heard, and that they know that they are loved unconditionally, you know. And that no matter ill be there for them. And that is very important to me because growing up and being alone in the house or alone in these dangerous situatins was was traumatizing, you know. Tommy mottola played a big part in your life. Did you think you were in love in the begin . Ing you said i intended to be married to tommy for rest of my life. In the very beginning, i did feel protected by him. I definitely felt that we had a bond in music for sure. I felt that he believed in me. And that was huge. I didnt feel that support as a person, though. Like i didnt feel like he got the fact that i was also, you know, a human being with my own feelings and thoughts and needs. Even before the actual marriage, the relationship was already so skewed meaning the Power Dynamics were never what they should have been in a real relationship. Its ironic, you know, my voice was being heard by millions of people on a label that he controlled, but my actual voice as a woman, as a human being, was really kind of shushed, you know, and not encouraged.
