Theres a mountain right there. And you could see the flames. Those fires erupting as the glass fire near st. Helena explodes in size, threatening homes. The rush to get people out. And we are really going to do our best to impress this idea, the size of this fire right now from where we left off at 7 00 is dramatically larger and has now moved well into Sonoma County. The eastern side of santa rosa needs to pay close attention to this for Evacuation Orders. We have a lot more coming up. And good evening to you im juliet goodrich. Were tracking new fires. New evacuations have just been ordered for Sonoma County. The site of the tubs fire three years ago. This is the latest evacuation map. The area extends east of cagastoga road and north of highway 12. Evacuation orders expanding tonight in napa county. Mandatory Evacuation Orders in blue. The evacuation warning area shaded in orange includes the Howell Mountain area. In less than 24 hours the flames have scorched 2,500 acres containment still stands at 0 and crews from across the bay area are helping in this fire fight. The blaze called the glass fire because of how close the flames sparked to Glass Mountain road. And the cause is still under investigation. Right now the flames are getting dangerously close to structures threatening at least 2,200 buildings. You can see the wall of flames closing down on this building torching the trees surrounding the property. No word yet on how many structures have burned. We have Team Coverage on the fire fight. We begin with joe vasquez four miles north of san helena. Im standing in a grape fine just on the other side of the silverado trail. Thats the glass fire. Thats the reason thousands of people had to leave their homes today. Stay safe. The high low siren means mandatory evacuation. This is just off of st. Helena near Spring Mountain road where one of the new fires developed tonight. Residents were advised to grab their belongings and their pets and leave immediately. The new fire appeared to branch off the glass fire which has been raging all day to the east of st. Helena. It continues to grow tonight. This part of the fire started raging around 7 00 tonight. Officials say their biggest concern is that it will come down and jump over silverado trail and if it does that, it could encroach on the communities of san helena and calestoga. Communities that are much more populated. Thats exactly what we saw happen tonight. This is just west of silverado trail. Our residents are no stranger to wildfire. We just ask that we remain vigilant and evacuate in order to do so. Thousands have heeded the warning and left their homes. Anxiety inducing and depressing. Packing up everything we can out of our job at home. It seemed like, every single range of human emotional. Its cremation. Reporter but craig says its not time for him to go. He says his family has been raising grapes for more than a century here in san helena. Were not going to evacuate. Weve never had a problem with the fires or the flooding. The only thing is if the fire comes here we would have trouble with the roof. This is not in a remote wilderness. It sounds like that fire is burning on each side of san helena is that about right . Right. First answer i dont know how the fire started. If officials know they have not said publicly. Secondly, youre right. Thats whats so remarkable here. You have two fires burning on each side of the san helena. The glass fire back over there by the silverado trail and across highway 29 if you look up into those hills thats where the second fire is. Theres another fire on that side as well. Thats the big concern now is not only has it jumped silverado trail it has jumped highway 29. It is headed toward Sonoma County and so a huge alert tonight as those winds go whipping through this area to our communities to the west who have experienced more of their share of fires here within the last few years. Its incredible. Its just three years ago that they had the tubbs fire which at the time was the most devastating fire in history here we are three years later and something of a replay. I hope it doesnt replay completely. Well get the latest from darren peck. Thats joe vasquez four miles north of san helena. It is a stark reminder to never wait until the last minute to evacuate. The whipping wind blowing bright orange embers on to his windshield, trees and brush engulfed in flames. The inferno spreading toward the line of cars waiting to evacuate. Luckily he did manage to get out before it was too late. Kpix 5s kenney choi is joining us from deer park road where fire crews have a very long night ahead of them. Kenney. They certainly do julia. Take a look behind me that glass fire continues to move south. You can see some flashing red lights on that hillside. Thats an engine truck thats trying to protect a home thats near by. I was there about 20 minutes ago, and now just to the east of that is adventus san helena fire. This fire is still zero percent contained tonight. Threatening homes and a lot more. Tonight the Adventus Health sits evacuated. The flames are just behind me. It may have already been devoured. As well as our homes near by. What began as a 20acre vegetation fire shortly before 4 00 west of the Canyon Reservoir exploded in nine hours and more than 2,500 by evening. Throughout the day an all out aerial attack near san helena. Calfire calling it a. On the ground, homeowners desperate to save the more than 2,200 structures threatened by the growing flames. If anything goes into the yard itll all be gone. Crews on the ground reporting high wind flaming the fire. Not what residents wanted to hear tonight. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Overnight crews will be working on protecting those homes that you see behind me. Defensible work as well as doing a lot more including possible evacuations later tonight. Were live in deer park, kenney choi. It is so eerie behind you. Kenney, thank you. The wildfires are adding a lot of new smoke into the air. A spare the air alert has been extended through at least tomorrow. And meteorologist darren peck is tracking the dangerous fire conditions youve been doing it since 4 00 this morning. Thats when the glass fire started. At the top of the newscast we showed a map that had Evacuation Orders on it. That map could be very difficult to pick out on your screen at home. I want to simplify things as much as i can because this is a rapidly developing situation. And it is a very concerning one. So lets just look at where the fire is now. Were going to get ourselves oriented this is the glass fire weve been looking at all day. Calistoga here, is san helena here. All day the fire was confine to this area. From a fire thats intense to be seen from a satellite in space. It has advanced through over here for much of the day. All of a sudden across the mountain over to highway 12 and its now knocking on the east side of santa rosa. So the Evacuation Order map that we showed you covered a lot of these locations here. Oakmont, youve got one. Weve got one for howard park over here. The fire is quickly moving this way and some of the Evacuation Orders are being issued so quickly through this part of highway 12 its difficult to keep track of them. This is the most important story happening right now. And its the most concerning item as well. The wind are going to continue to move in this direction. Because the red flag warning is stays in effect until tomorrow. The strongest winds are going to pick up in the Early Morning hours tomorrow. Just updated square there. Giving us an idea of how this fire is moving up toward oakmont. Oakmont need to take this more serious than anybody at this point but if youre any where here on the east side of santa rosa be paying close attention to the Evacuation Orders youre hearing. I would say get ready now if youre on that east side of santa rosa and you have not heard of the Evacuation Orders. Start preparing for those possibilities. I have a lot more on this as we get back over to you guys. Weve been bringing you updates from the fire lines all day from the cbsn bay area. Our source of breaking news around the clock. You can take it with you wherever you go by downloading the new app. Just search kpix news 4. Pg e hopes to have power restored by midnight and as if all of this were not enough. An earthquake alert in the next half hour, a second quake has been felt in milpitas. A magnitude 2. 4 quake hit at around 10 15 tonight. Another quake about the same magnitude struck this afternoon. Both rattled milpitas, and san jose. Back to our fire watch. This black and white type lapse from 4 30 this morning shows the moment the glass fire broke out. Those flashes of light on the left side of your screen are the flames spreading over the ridge. You can also see a vail of smoke spreading quickly. To help fight that fire, crews got to use the global super tanker. It is capable of carrying just under 20,000gallons of water or retardant. It is four years old and helped battle the 2018 campfire in butte county. There was a lot of uncertainty but what would remain in that area and about what would remain there. We talked to the owner of revelry winery after he made the eerie drive to his property early this morning. The neighbors crossed across the street was gone. Thanks to the venues and Defensible Space his winery was scared. It was very scary at the moment. Because it was like it wasnt here but then to pull up and see it it was a blessing. Now, i think probably one of the most beneficial ways to express whats happening. Is to use one of the cameras that set up through the Alert Wildfire Network thats been set up in partnership with pg e and universities to have eyes in the mountains when fires break out. Im going to go to the one that looks to the western edge of sonoma valley. I want to see if i can start that. Because the flames will actually animate for us and its been quite impressive to watch this. I just want to hit the refresh on this. I want you to watch as i time lapse this over the last hour. Okay theres a couple of things on your screen. Look over toward the right side. Theres a map on there and there is a triangle showing you where the camera is and its also showing you where the camera is oriented. That camera tells you were looking over this Northern Edge of sonoma valley. Right over highway 12. You get out toward places like los alamos road. Thats where this thing is b urning. If thats the true. Those are the flames over the last hours. This is very recent happening in that valley. Its one thing for me to show you the imagine on the map to help drive that point home. Its another thing to impress on you with the time lapse of whats being happening in that valley for the last hour. But let me go back to that map for the last time. Its color coded. Any one of those squares on there that are in the deep shade of pink thats where the fire has been detected within the last hour. In other words the whole block. That whole footprint within the last hour. At the top of the newscast we saw one additional square come down here just since weve been on. Showing you the speed with which that fire is moving to the south. Very quickly moveing to the west. Theres one other thing about this footprint. Thats exactly where the nuns fire went and the tubs fire. The tubs that went through coffee park it wasnt exactly here. That fire burned up here. That was the tubs fire. Its not like this is burning through area that was burned as recently as 2017. It wasnt. And the nuns fire also burn down here. What im trying to say is this fire is burning through an area that has no recent history of a burn car on it. So you dont have that layer of protection so we already know from whats been happening over the last five weeks the landscape is primed for these fires to really be able to run when they get started. It goes along with the strong offshore wind event right now but its also because of the report warmth weve had this summer and the dryness weve seen. Doing my best to impress on you the seriousness of that situation. I know there are other things in the weather to discuss. Its going to be hot tomorrow. Were going to be in the low 100s. Its going to be a few degrees warmer tomorrow than it was today just be advised of that. Air quality is going downhill. We will likely be pulling in more smoke not only from this glass fire but just because of the way the wind is moving through california. A lot of smoke will be directed toward the bay area over the next few days. Air quality could very likely be reading in the Sensitive Group if not worse for parts of the bay area tomorrow. Were done with the heat wave by tuesday. Well, let me take that back. Were out of the hundreds by tuesday. We dont really get out of the heat wave until we get to friday and saturday of next week.
