Michael hyman, a boardcertified physician trained at cornell medical school. He is chief of urology at providence st. Joseph Medical Center and a leading expert on the subject of bladder control. Now, join dr. Hyman and your host, suzanne setta. Hello and welcome to another edition of restore health naturally. Today were gonna be talking about the challenges of living with a weak and unpredictable bladder. And to help us discuss this very important topic is dr. Michael hyman who specializes in these issues. Dr. Hyman, thank you for being with us today. Thank you for having me, suzanne. I was actually surprised to find out how common a weak bladder really is. I understand 33 million americans suffer from this. Yeah, and honestly it could be more because so many of these people are embarrassed. They dont want to talk about it. Probably every five people you know, one of them has this problem, and if you think about elderly folks, half of them probably have this problem. Thats a lot. Well tell us, what are the early signs that you might actually have a weak bladder . The first sign is probably gonna be urgency. Thats that sudden, intense need to go to the bathroom like right now, worried something terribles gonna happen. Frequency of urination is another sign of a weak or poorlycontrolled bladder. Thats when you have to go to the bathroom often. Like a woman who i can think of who was a waitress, and she would go sometimes every 15, 20 minutes. She couldnt keep her job. Well thats no good. Thats awful, as a matter of fact. And theyre talking about going during the day. What about at night . Because i gotta tell you, once a while, i get up. [michael] if youre getting up three, four times a night, and you multiply that by 365 days a year thats 1,000 trips to the bathroom. Thats a lot. And people dont like to talk about it because its embarrassing. Right, right. Its so embarrassing especially when you think about people who have accidents. Whether theyre coughing or sneezing, or the urgency to get to the bathroom so badly, that you start having an accident. I had a patient once, calling me in tears. A poor woman with her children at disneyland. She couldnt stay in line with her kids because the urge was so intense. So was gonna have an accident, so she spent the day in the infirmary. It could be because the urge is too strong or because theyre coughing or sneezing, but those accidents, thats catastrophic. So tell us, what are some options for treatment . Until recently, you would start with drugs and then it was going to surgery options. The drugs come with some really uncomfortable side effects, including constipation, dry mouth, dry skin, dry eyes, and upset stomach. Some are even linked to causing dementia. Because of these serious, severe side effects, and because you basically have to take these drugs indefinitely, the vast majority of people taking them will stop after just a month or two. Think about that. People would rather deal with leaks and diapers than deal with side effects of medications. Well then, if not drugs, you would try surgery . Surgery is the final option for us. And it could start with some kind of a procedure in the office, but its not an easy thing to go through. We have to put a camera into the bladder, make injections into the bladder muscle, and if that didnt work, we would switch to something called a pacemaker. Oh my gosh. Really, suzanne, the lack of a safe and effective product, one that people will stick with, its what drove me to search for an alternative that i could actually recommend to my patients. I looked at several natural supplements, but none really made that much of a difference. Then i came across a very impressive study in the medical literature on a natural supplement called better bladder. It was helping people in ways id never seen before in my 20 years a boardcertified urologist. It was really a gamechanger. After better bladder, i dont have that pressure on my bladder anymore. I dont have the sensation that i have to go now. Now that im taking better bladder, im Getting Better sleep without rising four, five times in the middle of the night. And during the day at work. One time, 11 oclock, thats it. It works. It was like having a todo list of everything that was wrong and better bladder made me feel like i just crossed everything off that list, and i dont have to worry anymore. Well dr. Hyman, i know that you were very impressed with the Science Behind better bladder, so tell us specifically what you found. Suzanne, the first thing i do before i recommend any product is to see if there are any clinical studies supporting its effectiveness. If not, well, its a nonstarter for me. Not only did better bladder have a doubleblind, placebocontrolled study, the results were far more impressive than i would have ever expected. 86 saw a reduction of urgency. 84 of them had fewer trips to the bathroom at night. 90 went fewer times during the day and almost 94 saw a reduction in those awful leaks and accidents, and best of all, results were seen in as little as two weeks. It is really exciting to find that kind of substantiation behind the results for a natural product. Is that what won you over . Not entirely. I wanted to see how better bladder was gonna work in my own patients. So i gave it to them. And what i saw was very impressive. It validated everything i read in that study. Thats why better bladder is now my first option for helping people with these problems, and thats why im here today. It wasnt enough for you to help your patients. You wanted to get the word out to help everyone. Therabotanics, the Company Behind better bladder, developed an amazing breakthrough for everyone suffering from these bladder issues. There are a lot of conditions that people experience that arent diseases. Theyre not illnesses that can be cured by science. But which nature has provided simple solutions, simple things that can help us live a healthier, more fulfilling life. And those are the type of products that we offer at therabotanics. I used to have to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes, with a degree of urgency i no longer feel. I now can go three, four, and i have gone five hours without stopping to use the restroom. Better bladder allowed me to gain control of my bladder. As a result, i get my life back. I never have leakage, i never not make it to the bathroom. I always have dry panties, something that i havent experienced in a long time. Dr. Hyman, weve established that this is a really common problem, and one that really negatively affects a persons life. So tell us how this happens, what causes this . Sure, well, suzanne, lets start with the basics. This is a model of the bladder. Its like a hollow ball with thin walls of muscle. Now the bladder is a very functional muscle, and its activated by our nervous system. As your bladder fills, its also stretching, and its the stretching that tells your brain its time to go to the bathroom. Only then, at that specific moment, when your bladder begins to contract does urine come out, and that is normal bladder activity. A calm, quiet, tranquil bladder that remains at rest the vast majority of the time. Now sometimes, when it because agitated, it contracts when it is not supposed to. That is what i like to call an irritable bladder. And when your bladder becomes irritable or agitated, you might start thinking about going to the bathroom even when your bladders only partly full. Or it could be even more urgent. I dont care if i miss the movie, i gotta go. And it can become so strong that you actually, omg, im leaking. Well how does better bladder help this
