Members of the public are lining up outside the court to pay their respects, starting in an hour they will do that today and tomorrow. That was a very moving service. Reporter anthony, just hearing the wortds from twords i and chief justice tracing the impact she had on the country and on the law. The emotion you could hear in the voice of the chief justice as he said, of course, this loss that we all feel, this country feels is most heavy on her family. But the court was her family, too. Ruth is gone and we grieve. Very moving moment in the Supreme Court to say farewell to z justice ginsburg. He gave us insight. There were funny moments when he recalled who she was at a person. He described her as brave, tough, a fighter, a winner. But she was also very thoughtful, very smart, very inclusive. When it came to sports, clueless, which gave everybody a chance to laugh as we remember this great woman. Reporter also, he traced some of the if you think back her friendship with the late justice scalia, the famous photograph whether they have on the elephant in india. Where do things stand . Reporter the Biggest Development is that republicans now appear to have the votes they need to move forward with this nomination. They are split over whether they should hold a final confirmation vote before the november election or after it. The most vocal among them want to move fast, because it would remove the possibility of some unforeseen snag. Democrats insist, they are not giving up. This vacancy caused by the unfortunate death of rbg would lock in this hard right agenda for a generation. For a generation. Reporter Senate Democrats took to the floor for more than five hours last night to lay out what they say is at stake for the country. Let me be clear, the future of roe v. Early polls show that a majority of americans disagree with your approach. They want you to wait. Does that give you pause . Reporter at a large and largely maskless rally in pittsburgh, he praised his administrations response to the pandemic. Our early and aggressive action saved millions of lives. Reporter the president only commented on the death toll earlier at the white house when pressed by reporters. I think its a shame. Should way talk about covid19 . And considers himself a seeker of truth and of fake news world. Covid19 is the biggest lie fake news ever told. How can you say that when you look at the numbers . Well, i dont trust the numbers, first of all. In new york, they supposedly had warzonehospitals. I had friends and audience going out there with cell phones saying there is no one here. Youre talking to someone that was in new york and i experienced a lot of this firsthand. Why were the hospitals empty when the people went there . You saw it on youtube. We saw it in real life. We saw it from you. We heard your version, no offense. We dont trust you guys pt. As someone in new york city in it the height of covid19 who has friends in the hospital, i can tell you just as simply that isnt true. We had whistleblower nurse thats exposed what was happening. Hospital were monetized to lie about vud patients. What evidence do you have besides online speculation . Theres months now of documented evident for this. What kind . Is. Various articles. Gateway. Where . What kind of articles . Nemos news network. Thats your network. Absolutely. Ive been covering this since the beginning. I covered every bit of it. More than 200,000 americans have died since the pandemic. I know cbs has been reporting on these deaths and has knowledge firsthand. So obviously a pretty Tense Exchange there. You see were almost living two different versions of the truth. Im curious about how you kept your face on straight. Im wondering how did they gaughan so many followers based on all these false theories . Yeah. I mean, i think this movement is growing so quickly. You have this mysterious figure q who drops predictions online and people are really, really following this. And, you know, i think its actually a perfect storm. You have the disenfranchisement of the people. You have the pandemic. People are turning online. And then you also have this growing distrust of mainstream media. You have the coining of fake news. You have misinformation spreading online. And it really has created a perfect storm that led to q. Its very frightening. What are the main misconceptions . You know, i think this is something we cant ignore. I covered internet movements my whole career for last decade. This is unlike anything ive ever covered. These arent just people in the space. This is a Movement People really find appealing. You know, you have nearly 100 state and congressional candidates that are circulating the messages of q. 29 won primaries. Being on the ground, you gun to really understand that people are, you know, looking for some type of leadership, looking for something different. Theyre forming their own Political Party online. The so i really dont think we can ignore this. The i dont think we can ignore how quickly this is spreading. And when they circulate the messages that you speak of, what are the political implications of that . I mean, extraordinary implications. The when youre on the ground, one of the interesting things is when we were in this rally and ut w it was a pretty untense environment. Theyre filming you as youre filming them because they distrust the media. The big question is what is going to happen when we head towards the election and will they accept the results . I spoke to a lot of folks inside the rally. Listen to what they said. President trump is going to get reelected. What if he doesnt . He is. If he doesnt get reelected thats for the American People to decide if the elections are fair. I think there will be a lot of very angry americans. The only way it will happen is if there is vote fraud. What happens if he doesnt . Then the military will probably step in. The question is will this Online Movement move offline . And i think thats what a lot of us are wondering and a lot of experts looking at this are wondering. And will they accept the results regardless . And i think thats what i really heard on the ground. One thing to note about q is donald trump is really that guiding force. They look cues and signs and anything he tweets and. And who is q, lori . Are you able to figure is it male, female, who is this person or group . I have this question. Im like, you know, everyone is talking about q and going on and on about, you know, the predictions and they havent come true. And what is interesting is no one knows who q is. Q is when you go into the groups, a lot of the folks, they dont want to know who q is. And theyre not interested in it that. And so q is this mysterious figure who is posting and could be one person, many people. Theyre posting the predictions. And so its almost, you know, i put it luke this. Its almost a gaming of conspiracy theories. Where its like people believe in doing their own research and looking up their own stuff and down the rabbit hole of the internet they can find truth in anything. They dont know who q is nor do they care. All right, lori, thank you very much. In a tweet she wrote this. We are republicans, yes, but americans foremost. There is only one candidate in this race who stands up for our values as a nation, and that is joe biden. The last time cindy mccain voted for a democrat she was 18 years old. Cindy mccain joins us this morning. Good to see you, mrs. Mccain. How are you . Thanks for having me. Well, your endorsement has a lot of people talking today. Was this a tough decision for you to make . Not particularly tough, but i thought it through and i watched obviously id been watching both campaigns very closely. At this particular time in this time of crises, and in a country in such turmoil on every level, i just felt like it was the right thing to do. And, of course, ive known joe for 40 years, joe and jill for 40 years. Im so pleased and honored to be a part of the campaign, and what i want for my country is the same thing everybody wants. I want a president who has my back. A president that will respect our troops. And a president that is willing to listen and talk to both sides, and i think we see that in joe biden. Its interesting donald trump will say he does all that, respects the troops and wants America First. What concerns you most about the state of the Republican Party . Well, i think a lot of people like me and others that are kind of suburban women are kind of misled a little bit and kind of sad about the direction the Republican Party is going. I will always be a republican. Im not changing my registration or anything like that. But right now i believe that the person in the race thats the best one that represents me is joe biden. I know you all are longtime friend. It was no secret the admiration and respect that your husband and joe biden had for each ore. Did he reach out to you and ask for your endorsement, or did you reach out to him . What was your decisionmaking process . No. I just my decisionmaking process was this is the right thing. This is what i should be doing, and this is the to help the country. No, joe did not reach out to me. I reached out to him and told him that i wanted to do this. I think the things that ive seen through the months like many people have, is a lack of character, integrity, a lack of values presented by the person who is in charge. Mrs. Mccain, its tyony dokoupil Tony Dokoupil. Your late husband had a reputation for taking a stand and giving others cover who wanted to take a stand. You are now taking a stand. Do you think you will give cover to republican women who want to take the same vote you are . I hope so. I hope that women particularly take a look at whats going on and the fact that i have stepped forward and decided to do this. I hope they will make take a different look and take a harder look at the race and perhaps step over the line the way i did. Its not about a party or a particular system. Its about our country. Our country is in such crises right now. And we need a strong person at the helm. You know, the president has made no secret of the fact of how he felt about your husband. How did your husband feel about donald trump . He respects the office of the presidency. Thats always as someone who was in the military and then went into the senate. He believed in he just believed in what was right for the country. So personalities never came into it. John was always one that put country first. Country first. Were all mourning the loss of ruth bader ginsburg. Your husband voted for ruth bader ginsburg. Both your husband and rbg as shes known for known to reach across the aisle even though they may disagree. What do you think john mccain would think and what would he do during the times were living in now . Oh, gosh. Thats hard to anticipate or even understand. I would hope that john would have been as equally caring about this race, im sure he would have been, and understand that also someone who has always put America First would do the same thing. I can say those things and really what i really mean to say is i miss him very much. Miss mccain, its Tony Dokoupil again. I want to interject to point out that sometimes its important what a person says but also what a person is not saying. As i hear you voicing your support for joe biden, i do not hear you even mentioning the name of the current president , donald trump. Is that a conscious decision to talk positively about the candidate you support rather than negatively about the one you dont . Im on team biden, and thats where i am now, and what im doing is what as i said before, what i believe is right for the country. All right. Your message to republicans as we all get ready to head to the polls is what . Come with me. Lets vote for joe biden. Our country needs a new beginning. We need someone with character, integrity, and empathy as well. And so i hope you will join me in voting for a man i think would be a marvelous president. Are you worried about repercussions . I know we have to go. From the president when he feels people arent on his side, he tends to lash out. Are you concerned about any of that . No. Not at all. Im doing what i think is right. All right. Cindy mccain, thank you so much. Good to see you this morning. Thank you. Thank you very much. In this mornings in this mornings eye on money how the coronavirus is affecting the red hot Housing Market. All sales of existing homes hit the highest level in nearly 14 years, soaring more than 10 from a year ago. But inventory is low. There were nearly 2 million fewer homes available than at the same time last year. Cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger joins to us help make sense of the changes. Good morning. First of all, why is the Housing Market booming . Well, i think that there are a lot of factors that are combining. It is really clear that our maceor mace or nature where we live and how we work shifted with the pandemic. We had a buoyant market before the pandemic. A lot of people realize i dont like my house or renting or my kids are with me, gosh. All of those factors encouraging people to leave cities, their old homes, look for new homes and of course Mortgage Rates are very, very low and this is encouraging a hot Housing Market. As you noted, the inventory, the number of homes for sale has dropped dramatically and the number of homes for sale really is the determining factor of supply and demand. So we have just seen an almost frenzy to get going here. I want to remind you, of course if youre looking for a house, you shouldnt be deterred by this hot Housing Market, but youve got to run your numbers. Youve got to budget and have that home downpayment in a safe place, not at risk in the market, and get that preapprov preapproval. Try to look beyond the pandemic. Were in the middle of this but things could shift in the next couple of years. Youre probably buying the house for the next 20 or 30 years. With you talk about the low inventory which leads to bidding wars. When do you decide about whether you should get into a bidding war . I feel like this is a little bit of a deja vu in a lot of markets. It almost feels like 2004, 2005 again. Red fin the Real Estate Firm says over the last four months over 54 of the bids that theyve submitted have been part of bidding wars. Its hard to imagine. Now the really important fact here is its okay to be in a bidding war as long as you have run the numbers and calculated the top end where you can go. My worry is as a former Financial Planner is that people blow through what they budgeted for their house and they ask for problems down the line. So stick to your numbers, and dont get emotional. Really try to walk away. Anthony, ive always told you this, my mother used to be a realtor and used to say a house is like a man. Theres more than one for you in the world. [ laughter ] go, mom. Go, mom. Thank you, mom ha, ha, ha thank you. You mentioned the cities. A lot of people are leaving the cities because of the pandemic. Whats that doing to the Housing Market . Its a sellers market probably except in the cities by now, right . Thats absolutely true. You can look at areas like new york or in the bay area, where were seeing people flee the city and really look for more room. I think that theres a really interesting aspect to this, which is people leaving the cities, we had a whole trend towards urbanization. Now, i dont know if thats really going to be a permanent trend. Its one we should look at. I should also really be clear that a lot of the move away from the cities has been young people who have left their rental apartments and moved back home. We got a stunning if igfrom pfim pew research. Right now, 18 to 29yearolds, 52 have gone back to their homes. I know youre feeling this, anthony, you might feel it in your own home. Yep. 52 are living home. Do you know, that is the highest number of young adults living home since the great depression. I dont know whether or not thats going to persist, but what we do know is the gen z folks love paying down their Student Loan Debt and like having money. Anthony, you might have company for a while. I had a daughter moved out and a month later moved back in, jill. I know how it feels. Thank you very much, Jill Schlesinger. All right, im excited about a story out of florida involving former new york mayor michael bloomberg. Hes raised money, 16 million to pay the court fines and fees of nearly 32,000 former felons and what this money will do is restore their Voting Rights in the state of florida. Bloomberg has a motivation here, he wants joe biden to win the state of florida. This is an interesting story to me because voting is a constitutional guarantee. Yes. In a lot of states if you are a felon you lose the right to vote for an indefinite period of time. Voters in florida had an amendment if youre a felon you should get the right to vote back. Republicans in the legislature and the governor took that away because of the court fees, so bloomberg is stepping in saying no, this is about democracy. You should have that right and giving it back to them. Politics aside, i think its a great thing. I think regardless of your past behavior, if you served your time, you should be able to participate in our country again fully. Some could say hes righting a wrong. Hes already pledged 100 million to help in the state of florida for joe biden. Could make a big difference. 100,000 voters was about the difference in 2016 and this is 32,000 disproportionately likely to vote for biden. Mine is about rolling stone. Youre surprised its number one . Yes. As an album. As an album. A lot of songs i love, as an album not sure number one. There are songs on the album you dont like, in other words . Especially during these times. I thought it was an excellent choice. Im not knocking the album. Im knocking the number. Got it. What i have is this. Its a record for the years largest waves surfed this year has been set by a woman. Brazils maya gabeira, that fly speck on that giant wave, off the coast of portugal in february, 73 1 2 feet. Teams of engineers and scientists finally determined the size of the wave this month and determined she set the record this year. It smashed her previous record by more than five feet. She told the New York Times i was in the zone, more brave than i am usually. I got really close to disaster. She knows disaster because in 2013, she wiped out an a 50foot wave and was pulled from the water without a pulse. Whoa. Took her four years to come back and shes back doing this again. Its interesting, because the biggest wave of the year is a very carefully calculated thing. It had to be confirmed by a team of private waveninger ins from the Scripps Institute of oceaning afee and daept of aerospace and mechanical engineering. She was in a real zone. I wouldnt have gone back in. Incredible picture. And danger in the zone. Very impressive. Were moving on and changing gears here, talking about a woman who claims she was shot, who shot her boyfriend by accident, but police are saying that theres a lot more to the story. 24yearold Mary Katherine h higdon told she accidentally shot her boyfriend. Their relationship had grown toxic. David begnaud spoke exclusively with higdon. August 1st, 2018, i get a call from one of my investigators, said we have a shooting victim off sunnybrook drive and didnt look good. County 91. Hi, i just shot my boyfriend in the neck, im so sorry. Reporter lieutenant Chris Willson arrived at the scene, found her frantic as First Responders tried to save the life of her boyfriend, steven freeman. Tell me hes alive. Reporter steven died. Mary catherine told police her gun went off accidentally as she was handing it to steven, who had been sitting on a mattress in their living room. None of our guns we had around our house were ever chambered, there was never a bullet in the chamber. It was never my intention to ever injure him or kill him. Reporter the police were suspicious. And Mary Catherines story about the gun seemed unlikely to Detective Adam trammell. Is it possible for the gun to off steaccidentally . Not from my experience. Reporter she was taken in for questioning, police didnt believe her and after confronting her, they say she confessed. She said i did it out of anger. Yeah. Just like that. Reporter thinking they had the confession on tape, Mary Catherine was arrested but there was a big problem, with the recording. We cant hear it. Reporter but prosecutor kate leonard said they had plenty of other evidence. The state contended the couples relationship was unraveling and Mary Catherine shot steven in anger after he hadnt come home for dinner and ignored her calls and text messages. At trial she claimed she was the victim of an abusive boyfriend. He smacked me around, sometimes he would grab me and shake me. Reporter and she says steven had raped her on two occasions, and thats why she was afraid of him the night she shot him. She had never told anyone that before, and he cant defend himself. Reporter Mary Catherine insists she was embarrassed to tell the police that steven had a history of Violence Toward her. What would a jury believe . Wow. David begnaud joins us now. I want to talk about that alleged confession tape. Police say it happened, but the tape apparently went blank. What happened to that tape, and how did it affect the outcome of the case . Reporter tony, its like the one question i kept having leading up to that interview with the investigators, how is it possible that you guys did this . It was like listen, we didnt mean to. There was feedback on the tape. We dont know what happened. There was a lot of questions we asked them, did you try again . Did you go back . When did you realize you had feedback on the tape but the bottom line is that could have been the number one key thing the prosecution needed at the trial. Without it, what ended up happening and how did it influence the verdict . Hear tonight prime time 10 00 9 00 central. Looking forward to it, thank you very much. As david mentioned, watch his report the case against Mary Catherine higdon on 48 hours suspicion, tonight at 10 00 9 00 central. Ahead jeff daniels as james comey, the emmy winner shows us how the comey rule goes behind the rules of some of the most significant every time i wear that suit, every time, i every time i wore that suit i put both my legs in one side of the pants. I stand up, i put one leg into one side and take my other leg and aiming for the other side but i get stuck and im asking if theres something not so much wrong but different about those pants. You cant put your pants on and you think theres something wrong with the pants . All right, get out. I love that show. Jeff daniels, love him, too, played will mcavoy in the newsroom. For his latest role, daniel joins a different team, plays former fbi director james comey in the new twopart series requesting the comey rule. Its adapted from comeys bestselling book for showtime and in this preview, comey wonders about reopening an investigation of Hillary Clinton just before the 2016 president ial election. Where does that put the credibility of this institution . Another scenario. Hillary has just been elected, a republican controlled house is drafting bills of impeachment before shes even sworn in. Now imagine we find something n incriminatin incriminating. We present those findings to house judiciary, they ask us when we first found these emails and well be obliged to say we learned of them a month before the election, and the world will conclude that we actively concealed this from the American Public in order to tip the election. Where does that lead the credibility of this institution . Oh, boy. Jeff daniels, good morning to you and welcome back to cbs this morning. Good morning, gayle. It was such a complicated story at the time. Did you follow it in real time at the time . Well, it was a kind of tsunami of events and incideni that happened in that particular month. That certainly was one of them, when in october, when he reopened the investigation, i was one of the people going, what is he thinking . Yes, very good. A lot of people were thinking what is he thinking . So what piqued your interest when you said i want to play this role. So many layers, so many people with strong opinions about comey, yea and nay. What were you thinking at the time . First think like an actor and look at the role and it was another complicated role. Ive gotten a lot of those since newsroom which im blessed for, but i didnt know how to do it. I looked at it going, oh, i didnt say oh, ill do what i did in newsroom. No, it was like i dont know how to do this, so i said yes, which is you know, at this age, thats what keeps me interested, is the risk of failure and the challenge of it all. Whats interesting, too, is that comey didnt really play a part, he wasnt involved in the production, but he did come to the set, and he came to the set on a day where you guys were shooting that crucial dinner scene. Im wondering what that was like for you, a, playing the dinner scene. Gleason is a knockout rie how he imitates trumps mannerisms. What is it like for you playing comey in front of comey . I did not see him before we started shooting. I had the audio book that jim did, youtube is full of, you can see him, even on the colbert show you can see what jims sense of humor was so as an actor going in, i had enough but that day, we were from twomonths into shooting and it was brendan dplgleasons first of work and we didnt rehearse the scene. We shook hands and they rolled camera. Why didnt you rehearse, jeff . Film. You want to make it happen for the first time in front of the camera. And when you got an actor like brendan, who comes in prepared, and im prepared, its like a tennis match. You dont rehearse the final of the u. S. Open before you do it. You put the two people out there and you go, and that was the thrill of it. After two takes, billy ray, the writer director said i want you to meet somebody and around the corner came jim comey. Oh, boy. Which was, you know, okay, and first of all, you think thats tall. Hes 68, and then you realize hes really 712. Hes huge, as tall as a tree. I put two inch lifts in my shoes. I wasnt even close. Did you drop out of character, jeff . Its anthony mason. Did you drop out of character right away . What do you do in a moment like that . No, i was aware that he might come that day. I just didnt know that it would be after two takes of probably the most important scene in the movie, so i, it was great to meet him. You always hope they like it, but its not a requirement and he said you know, you brought back the emotion i felt, the struggle i felt to try to figure out what to do, what to say.
