Bill cosby is a really decent person. I really believe that Harvey Weinstein is as good a man as god ever created. Ive spent much of my adult life as part of a team committed to kill somebodys cat. John mccain, and people like him, are not american heroes. The bottom line is Lindsey Graham is the most despicable thing i have seen in my time in politics. And i intend to vote for joe biden. Announcer its a late show with Stephen Colbert tonight, moment of ruth. Plus stephen welcomes Lieutenant General h. R. Mcmaster and laurence fishburne, featuring jon batiste and stay homin. And now live on tape from the ed sullivan Theater Office building in new york city, its Stephen Colbert stephen thats right thats right h. R. Mcmaster and laurence fishburne, one of those guys was in the matrix. First thing im asking hmm r. Mcmaster, which one was it. Welcome to a late show, im your host, Stephen Colbert. You be me. Thats my wife. You know, life can be hard, but i like to think i can take a lot of punishment. Is that all you got, old man . Stuff like that. But damn. Damn. 2020 is a relentless opponent. Just when you think its finished punching you in the face, it starts workin the midriff and then kneeing the groin. Between now and the election was already going to be a dark and dirty road. But on friday, it got worse. Because our country said goodbye to a hero. Supreme Court Justice ruth bader ginsburg, who passed away at the age of 87. The wave of grief at her loss was immediate. Thousands came to the steps of the Supreme Court to hold a vigil in her honor, a new mural in d. C. Paid her tribute, and if youre like me, you got texts from everyone you know, with an even mix of sadness and swearing. Justice ginsburg led a pioneering life. She was a judge, an attorney, but above all, she was a tireless advocate not only for womens rights, but for equality for all americans. I know exactly how tireless she was, because two years ago, i got to work out with her. That day, she cast the deciding vote in the landmark case of 85 year old fitness v. My selfesteem. Ginsburg was known for her tenacity. She was just the second woman appointed to the Supreme Court and when it came to carving out her place in the boys club, she said that she took her mothers advice be a lady and be independent. be a lady meant dont give way to emotions that sap your energy, like anger. Take a deep breath and speak calmly. Stephen thats good advice for any supreme Court Justice. Hey, boofdouche, be a lady. Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993, and during her nearly 30 year tenure, she authored some of the courts most consequential decisions and its most scathing dissents, which earned her the nickname the notorious r. B. G. , a. K. A. Ruthie smalls. R. B. G. Believed not in special treatment, but in equal treatment, which she summed up with this quote i ask no favor for my sex. All i ask of our brethren is that they take their feet off our necks. Stephen damn right. Especially hers. Those cravats were dryclean only. But americans didnt get any time to mourn this great justice, because less than two hours after we learned of ginsburgs death, we heard from Senate Majority leader and neutered dog sack, mitch mcconnell. Who said, President Trumps nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States senate. He couldnt even wait til the morning. Its like a husband rushing to the scene of the accident and going as husband no not my wife hey, is that e. M. T. Single . cuz i aaaammm apparently, since 2016, mcconnell has had a change of heart, or whatever squirming bag of scorpions occupies that dark cavity. Because back then, he opposed Barack Obamas nomination of Merrick Garland, and he explained it this way the American People deserve to be heard on this matter. Thats the fairest and most reasonable approach today. Voters have already begun to choose the next president , who in turn will nominate the next supreme Court Justice. Stephen keep in mind, back if 2016, that was nine months before the election. This time the election has literally already started. Voting has begun in as many as 20 states. So for mcconnell, not in an Election Year, but in an election, thats fine. Thats like saying, id never cheat during my engagement. But at the wedding . I mean the bridesmaids are just hangin there like ripe fruit so, what changed . Well now, mcconnell claims that since the 1880s, no senate has confirmed an oppositeparty president s Supreme Court nominee in a president ial lection year. Okay, but he did not mention anything about Political Parties in 2016. Hes like that neighborhood kid who keeps changing the rules of the game. as mcconnell the floor is lava, but i can walk on it because i have red shoes. But red shoes dont work for you, because you have an older brother. Thats also why i get two cupcakes and get to take away your healthcare, which youre going to need because the couch is also lava. Mcconnell isnt the only fragrant hypocrite. So is South Carolina senator and sad, wet corn muffin remembering when he used to be lindsay graham, lindsay graham. Graham has already said hell vote to seat trumps nominee, but back in 2016 graham promised that he would treat a republican nominee the same way he was treating Merrick Garland, an iyou towords against me. If there is a re 2a curs in the last year of the first term, you can Lindsey Graham said lets let the next president , whoever it might be, make that nomination, and you can use my words against me and youd be absolutely right. Stephen id love to use your words against you, lindsay, but theyre clearly empty. Now, a gym sock full of combination locks . Thats got some heft. And its not just mcconnell and graham. Listen to all these republican senators in 2016 there is a long tradition that you dont do this in an Election Year. I dont think we should be moving forward on a nominee in the last year of this president s term. I would say that if it was a republican president. The American People ought to have a say who sits in that Supreme Court seat. Why would we squash the voice of the people . Why would we deny voters a chance to weigh in on the make up of the Supreme Court . We are not going to nominate a supreme Court Justice until the people have spoken. Let the new president make the decision without the political influence of the election hanging over it. Stephen of course, ultimately, republican senators have no honor, so they dont care if we call them hypocrites. Its like the fifth victim saying to jack the ripper hey, you keep stabbing me in the chest, youre really going to start to seem like a murderer. I mean, in the publics eyes. I understand all the pressure that must be on you to keep stabbing me. Along with the senators, thencandidate trump said this about Merrick Garland i think the next president should make the pick. I would be not in favor of going forward. But surprise saturday, he said this we said if for any reason, we have a vacancy on the United StatesSupreme Court, we will fill that vacancy. Were not going to say and by the way, we have plenty of time. Theres a lot of time, you know youre talking about. Yourealking about january 20. Right. Fill that seat, fill that seat, fill that seat, fill that seat stephen okay, so trump has a new chant. But unlike build the wall, im pretty sure he can fill that seat. You have to get your joy where you can. Trump is thrilled to have this opportunity. A source close to him revealed that trump has been salivating to nominate a replacement. Court justice extra crispy. Shes sure to cast the deciding vote on gravy v. Arteries. Trump really wants this Supreme Court fight, but theres a danger in trump basing his reelection on this because 62 of americans want the seat to remain vacant and only 23 want him to fill it. People love the way i shanked covid. Quick, find something to take their mind off it. Ive narrowed it down to replacing the supreme Court Justice or drop kicking baby yoda. On this george with week stephanpoulos, nancy pelosi explained that shes keeping her options open some have mentioned the possibility if they try to push through the nominee in a lame duck session. That you and the house could move to impeach President Trump or attorney general barr by way of stalling and preventing the senate from acting on this nomination. Well, we have our options. We have arrows in our quivver that im not about to discuss right now. Stephen glad to hear it, madame speaker, but, can we update your weaponry, please . Democrats may have a quivver of arrows, trump has a literal heat ray but still all this talk of impeachment takes me back to a simpler timer time, like s allto worry about. You know, it used to take several decades for culture to get nostalgic, but the past nine months have felt so long, its time for vh1s new series i love the january i cant believe what our haircuts back then. In that wed get haircuts. And look what we were wearing pants as important as Justice Ginsburgs work was to all americans, and as affected as i am by her loss, i think its fair to say that her lifes work was especially meaningful to american women. Here to talk more about that is one of my writers, and certified woman, Eliana Kwartler. Eliana . Thanks steve. I cant speak for all women, but the women of the late show chose me to talk about Justice Ginsburg for three reasons im tiny, jewish, and have the workout routine of an 80 yearold. I just moved up to two pound weights h youoing . My triceps are a little sore. Stephen i mean about Ruth Bader Ginsburgs passing. Oooh. Im sad. And im mad. Im scared, upset frustrated. I owe so much to ruth bader ginsburg. Her work paved the way for me to get a mortgage and get a car loan without a man to cosign. Shes the reason i can have my own credit card. Without her, i never would have been able to buy these custom purple velour sweatpants that say nominee in giant rhinestones across the butt. Thank you, Justice Ginsburg. And im sorry we lost to john oliver. Stephen are you apologizing to Justice Ginsburg or to me . Both, but actually her. R. B. G. Pioneered the idea that discrimination on the basis of sex violates the equal protection clause of the constitution. In 1996, she got the Virginia Military institute to allow women to attend. Thanks to her, i had the option to attend military college. I didnt take it. I cannot climb a rope. Stephen neither can i. And thats equality, steve. Yu and i have the same muscle mass, but you have more womanly hips. Stephen true. Everything about how she lived her life was inspirational. R. B. G. Wasnt a miracle worker. She was a worker worker. Theres a story from 2014, when she was already 81, where she stayed up working on an emergency brief until 5 00 a. M. Stephen i can barely stay up until 5 00 p. M. I know. I wrote that line for you. If r. B. G. Taught us anything, its that neck doilies never go out of style. Also that you overcome your opponent by outworking your opponent. Theres a reason she worked until 87 and still wasnt finished. But were the ones who get to finier wefre,do these stephen Eliana Kwartler and her sparkly pants, everybody weve got a great show for you tonight, ill be talking to Lieutenant General h. R. Mcmaster and laurence fishburne. But when we come back, more monologue. Who know an open mind is the only kind. Who dont need to travel to find something new. Try a clean plantbased burger for a change. Stephen welcome back. Now, because of the massive amount of absentee ballots, we may not know the election winner on election night. So, on saturday, trump made yet another stop on his maskfree coronapalooza tour, where he unveiled his plan for how to count the votes faster dont. Were going to have a victory on november 3rd, the likes of which youve never seen. Now were counting on the federal court system to make it so that we can actually have a evening where we know who wins. No where the votes will be counted week later, two weeks later. Stephen um, thats not how voting works. You cant just stop when the numbers are what you want them to be. Otherwise, id be 28 years old with a 32 inch waist, talking about the 44th president. And trump offered a tantalizing Campaign Pledge if biden wins if i lose to him, i dont know what im going to do. I will never speak to you again, youll never see me again. Stephen well, if youre thinking that clip would be a great ad for the biden campaign, youre right. Because after the rally, biden immediately repurposed it if i lose to him, i dont know what im going to do. I will never speak to you again youll never see me again. Im joe biden and i approve this message. Stephen thats already been viewed over 15 million times for a 77yearold, that is some solid social media game. Thats whatcha call a clapback, jack. And imma do it again as soon as i figure out who this bird character is, and why he wants my password. Come on lemme in, ya hashtags laughter trump also floated this jok you know, we can joke, we can play games, we can have fun. You cant have this guy as your president , you cant have maybe ill sign an executive order you cannot have him as your president. Stephen as trump get it . The punchline is im a dictator. Heres another one knock knock. Whos there . Secret police. Get in the van. Of course, overshadowing trumps party is that we have passed the tragic milestone of 200,000 covid deaths. But according to trump at that rally, and on fox and friends this morning, hes doing a great job on the virus. His problem is advertising somebody said, what grade would you give yourself . I said, a plus. Weve done a phenomenal job. Not just a good job. A phenomenal job. On the job itself, we take an a . On Public Relations, i give myself a d. Go safely, california. Stephen hey, everybody. Welcome back to a late show. Lets check in with our friend mr. Jon batiste. Hey, jon. Jon hey, teach, how you doing . Stephen i spent the entire weekend thinking about ruth bader ginsburg, not just the partisan political fight thats going to come up over whether shes replaced, but about the loss of a giant like that, someone who fought so hard for equality for all people. Jon she was really an unbelievable force. The life that she led is such a great example for whats possible within humanity and what were capable of, and shes passing us the baton and now more than ever her lifes work is important. Stephen she and john lewis this year have been two extraordinarily affecting deaths. Jon absolutely. Stephen you know, and just like john lewis, knowing that there was somebody out there of her stature and of her intellect and moral courage, again, takes the pressure off of you a little bit to not have to stand up and do the right thing. But once again, when a giant like that passes, Everybody Knows that its up to them to build the world that they want. Jon absolutely. Its such a void that we have no choice. At our own peril, we have to step up, or everything is lost. So i have been saddened, but im still going to believe in us. Im optimistic that we can follow that examplet that they set for us. Stephen thank you, jon. Joining me now is an author, military historian, and retired three star general who served as National Security advisor to President Trump. His new book is called battlegrounds. Please welcome, Lieutenant General h. R. Mcmaster general mcmaster, thank you for being here. Stephen, thank you so much for having me. Good to see you. Stephen the u. S. Has got a lot of its plate right now. I think that is putting it lightly. Um, but your book looks at the International Challenges the u. S. Has. What is the greatest International Challenge the u. S. Is facing right now that were not hearing about . Well, stephen, i think its a broad challenge of really us not paying attention to whats going on in the world. Covid 19 hasnt suspended any of the competitions that i write about in the book, it has in many way a accelerated them. So i think were taking our eye off the ball. Of course, we have this triple crisis now of covid 19, the recession associated with it and the deep divisions in our society laid bear by the horrible murder of george floyd and the civil strife that followed, concerns over inequality of opportunity in our country. So i think its really a tough time for us, but these challenges arent going away. So the argument in the book is for us to be introspective but also to remain engaged in the world, to try towns these challenges and what we have to do to protect ourselves and our waif life and to build a Better Future for generations to come. Stephen now, both campaigns, both biden and trump are sort of being tough on china. How has our relationship with china changed because of the coronavirus . Well, stephen, i think what has happened with the coronavirus is china thinks its winning, or china thinks its a combination of winning and a belief that this fleeting window of opportunity that the Chinese Communist party believed it had, what i write about in the book, is closing maybe more rapidly for them. And what weve seen in the covid 19 crisis is an intensification of aggression by the Chinese Communist party. We see it from the socalled wolf warrior diplomacy aimed mainly at europe and the United States. You see it as Peoples LiberationArmy Soldiers are attacking indian soldiers and bludgeoning them to death on the himalayan frontier. You see it with the repression of freedom in hong kong, maybe the greatest land grab in history if they can get away with it in the south china sea, the threats towards taiwan, and thats to say nothing of the acceleration of this cultural genocide i in china. The nature to have the Chinese Party and the threat they poseto no just the United States but to free and open societies. Stephen to the best of your knowledge how are the chinese responding to the covid. Is their economy recovering better than ours . You cant believe anything that comes out of china. In connection with the covid 19 crisis, they foisted it on the world by repression of humantohuman transmission, by shutting down Domestic Travel before international travel, by punishing the doctors that were trying to expose the crisis, and, so, Economic Data is also sketchy coming out of china. But they are the first to be coming out of it and i think its very possible xi jinping is kind of in an echo chamber. If youre a dictator and you put people around you who tell you how great you are and what you want to hear, and i think theyre telling him, hey, youre on top youre doing great, and i think this is maybe a source of their increasingly aggressive behavior. Stephen that sounds like a terrible form of government to have one guy who says hes the only one who has the answers and only surrounds himself with people who say exactly what he wants to hear. Can you imagine want ago government like that . We fought a revolution because we didnt want to live under a monarchy. I think we should still celebrate we are not a monarchy. Stephen we should, but there are some people who think that wouldnt be such a bad idea based on their behavior in washington, d. C. Right now, would you agree, general . Well, i think we should be grateful for what our founders set up, they were pretty brilliant about this. As were at each others throats in the midst of a president ial campaign, i think its worth going back to some of those founding documents. I mean, federalist ten, for example, and what Alexander Hamilton and James Madison wrote about, they feared factions and how the factions can divide us, so as we look at the threats from overseas, theyre much more pernicious and dangerous to us because they can more readily penetrate our shores, especially with disinformation and propaganda and political subversion. So what im hoping for stephen is that we restore our confidence in our form of th least take a minute to be thankful that we do have a say in how were governed. Stephen you write defense begins with exposing the kremlins efforts to sow dissension within nations. Do you still believe that . I still do, yes, i do. Stephen the president has called the russia interference with our elections and within our nation a hoax. If you still believe that, is trump undermining our defense by calling into question whether russia is doing it . Yeah, i think any leader who doesnt acknowledge the nature of the threat is playing into their hands. What i describe in battlegrounds is how president putins play book combines disinformation with denial. We dont want to help them with the denial part, so we have to pull the curtain back, lay it bare, and make sure as well that we dont tee them up for success with the divisions that were seeing in our society. Wat really russia wants to do is drag us down, stephen. They want to polarize us and pit us against each other and reduce our confidence in who we are and in our democratic principles and institutions and processes. So, i mean, my advice to any leader would be lets not be our own worst enemy. Lets not make it easy. Stephen so undermining our faith in our democracy would be doing things like saying this will be a rigged election and if i dont win the only way that will be is if its rigged and thats only way they won, are those you would like to hear a president say . Absolutely. Those are things we should all avoid saying, absolutely. Stephen your successor, robert obrine, one of them, in the National Security agency, said the covid crisis was going to be the greats National Security ethreat trump would face as president of the United States. Do you agree with that . Well, i think it is not maybe the greatest National Security threat. It is the greatest immediate threat for sure. And also, it has ramifications. It reverberates across all these other computations i write abouy concerned about now, in large measure because those threats are growing in magnitude, and in the book, you know, im an historian, stephen, so i try to tell the history of how these challenges developed, but also i think its a more dangerous time because i do believe that we are now these days, i think, leaning toward disengagement from those complex problems. I think were in for a period of probably overdue and necessary introspection to bring our country together to emerge from this crisis stronger socially and economically and politically. But i think that introspection, we can accomplish that without disengaging from these challenges that, if we allow them to grow, if we allow them to penetrate our shores, we will have to cope with them at a very high cost. Stephen in 2008 and 2009, during that economic crisis, the United States had another period of sort of introspection and reasonably expected naval gazing because were all worried about our own wallets, i knew at the time a lot of troops stationed overseas felt like they had been kind of abandoned in the the attention of the American Public because we were concerned about our economics and forgetting the people we put in harms way. Is that happening again . Are we forgetting about the young men and women who are putting themselves in harms way for ourselves . You know, stephen, i think it is because i have not heard a really detailed conversation about the wars were in in a long time, and i think what the American People need to understand, to sustain our efforts that are so critical to our security is they have to understand, wis stake . What is the danger . And then they also deserve to know what the strategy is, what the strategy is that will achieve the outcome we want, that will secure the American People and our way of life at a cost thats acceptable. And i think that discussion happens all too infrequently these days, and our smaller, you know, professional military is engaged in these wars without the people in whose name they fight and serve understanding these wars. Stephen general, thank you so much for being here. The book is battlegrounds. It is available tomorrow. The man is Lieutenant General h. R. Mcmaster. Thank you, sir. Good to have you back. Good to be back, stephen, stephen i have to ask you about the movie contagion. Yeah. Stephen you played the head of the i did . Stephen when you were making that movie, did you think to yourself i should try to remember some of this stuff . The guy working with us, our liaison at the c. D. C. At the time, was really insistent we did remember that stuff, and he made us aware of the fact they have been dealing with these kinds of things all the time. I think they were tracking eenla back then when we were making the movie. Stephen are there any of these things when covid reared its ugly and tragic head, did you think, okay, i already know to wash my hands, i already know to get a mask. Did everything snap in . Im a big Science Fiction fan. Stephen oh, good. And it was really clear this was not Science Fiction, this was science fact. So it made it clear to me that it was important to listen to the scientists and the people that know about these kind of diseases and pemption, et cete et cetera. Stephen i want to talk to you about blackish for just a second here. Yes. Stephen last time you were here we were talking about blackish. And now theres a third spinoff in the works ailed oldish. Yes. Stephen youre 59, im 56, aoldish . If you have c. R. S. Stephen whats that . Cant remember bleep . Or c. S. S. Stephen whats that . Cant see bleep . If youre wearing comfortable shoes. If you have kids to explain between baby and lil baby, you might be oldish. Stephen i might be. How comfortable is your tire these days. Check me out. Stephen oh, yeah, no laces, baby. Yeah, man. You know, slip em on, slip em off. Stephen dont have to lean over fort that. Comfort over style any day. Stephen how often are we wearing pants at this point . Were wearing pants. Stephen thats a high standard, i suppose. Exactly. Stephen coronavirus hasp ended the lives of a lot of actors. I know you were about to open on broadway in american buffalo with sam rockwell. Thats right. Stephen how close were you guys to opening before coronavirus shut down all the theaters. We were 12 days away from our first preview. Stephen so you were there essentially. Almost. Stephen you were close. Very close. Stephen boy, that is theater interrup interruptus. What are you doing to stay sharp . Sam and i could get together two or three times a week and rehearse via facetime in zoom. Darn chris would join us. We did that two months after we did the shutdown. Stephen oh, wow. I cant wait for broadway to open back up so i can so you can be with an audience again. Yes, exactly. Exactly. Stephen because i dont know about you but i didnt go into performance to be alone. No. Stephen i can make faces in the mirror by myself. But its good practice. Its a good time to work on your schtick. laughter stephen you also, you just narrated the autobiography of malcolm x. Theres actually very few audio books have their own billboards around town. Theres a huge one at the mouth of the lincoln tunnel. Ive heard. Stephen as soon as i saw it, i went, yeah, that makes sense, i want to listen to that. What do you think i mean, its a famous biography. Malcolm x is a towering 20t 20th century figure. What tuning is so vital about his story right now and what sticks with you from his story . Well, you know, he arrived at this place after going through, you know, numerous really horrible experiences, whether it was the death of his father, his mother beitionaliz s family being separated, being incarcerated in prison, being a prisoner, then reforming and reshaping himself, becoming this humanist person, this activist, this spokesman for black americans, in particular, to, like, really becoming, like, a humanist. He has this great, great quote where he says, i am a human being first, and then i hope that one day we can meet in the light of understanding. The fac that he arrived at that, i think thats the most significant, powerful and Important Message of his life. Stephen mmhmm. And i think, you know, also, because of the time that were in now, there was great turmoil in the 60s when malcolm was alive and doing his work, and theres great turmoil now in our country, certainly around race and, you know, economics, justice, all kinds of things, the environment. I think that message is really important right now. Stephen what do you think he would make of our present well, of our country right now and our world. I think of our country right now, he would be i think its twofold. I think he would be greatly disappointed but i think he would also be looking for, you know, the Silver Lining in it and trying to figure out, you know, where is where is the positive that is coming out of all of this turmoil . What can we do thats positive. And i think, in effect, it would be, you know, the reality that we have the power to change our circumstances because we have the power of the ballot, we have the power of the vote, and if we exercise our right to vote, we can change this.
