And i was never a fan of brad pitt. I love our military. Your future is what im focused on each and every day. Announcer its a late show with stephen colbert. Tonight, liar liar earth on fire. Stephen welcomes bob woodward and musical guest luke combs, featuring jon batce iheco stephen nice. Hey, everybody. Welcome to a late show. Chris, mark, good to see you again. Good to see you out there, even though i cant see you. My name is stephen colbert. Were back after two weeks of the air. Thats a long time. I got really good at not doing my job. You should see me not do it. Its pretty unimpressive. A lot happened in those two weeks, but perhaps the most earthshattering news broke this weekend, when chris evans accidentally shared a penis pic. Yes, for one brief, shining moment, we got a glimpse of captain americas winter sldier. And it did not seem affected by the cold. Apparently, while trying to share something on instagram, evans inadvertently posted a anyosee whe an penis. To gallery, he prudes or me i t show you a my commercials are about trying to maintain one. So let me put it this way you know that scene at the end of Avengers Endgame where captain america is able to lift thors hammer . Not so surprising anymore. I knew it stephen but theres so many truly important stories in the world right now, that i cannot in good conscience waste another second talking about the fact that the photo was black and white. Classy. Like a french film. Directed by jean luc gothard. And heres the rub because our president continues to run roughshod over our democratic norms and institutions, and ignores a global pandemic, we have to take the high road. Which i think is also the angle from which chris took a photo of his low road. And what a long and winding road it appears to be. It werent for the darkness of our news cycle, we could happily t w. O many chris evans jokes how many . I have a whole chris evans sack of jokes. Prop was worth it. But tonight, you wont even get a glimpse of the sack. Same policy as chris, if you saw the photo im talking about. The one of his penis. But here is my solemn vow if joe biden is elected on november 3, on november 4, we will cover chris evans penis. Something chris evans did not do. If you go to your polling placeo his. But until that happy day, lets talk trump. Hes in california today to survey damage from the worst wildfires in californias history. Theyre so bad, that giant clouds of ash and smoke have generated lightning and fire tornadoes. Ok, 2020. Pestilence, pillars of fire. If youre going full old testament, wheres the river of blood . We could use it to put out the flaming tornadoes why is this years fire the worst in californias history . Lets ask california governor and guy whos never been seen in the same room with the batman gavin newsom. He has a very simple theory the debate is over around climate change. Just come to the state of california. Observe it with your own eyes. Mother nature is physics, biology and chemistry. She bats last and she bats 1,000. Thats the reality were facing, the smash mouth reality. Stephen first sturgis and now wildfires. Smashmouth shows up to every catastrophe makes sense, cause if you go to california right now singing you might as well be walking on the sun of course, trump denies Global Warming because he singing aint the sharpest tool in the shed so he had another explanation which he shared on his way to california. He decided not to talk to reporters for what we usually call chopper talk. But once he arrived at the airport in california, he chatted with the press in ou new segment jetway jibber jabber stephen trump started out by explaining to the media how wild fires start. With regard to the forests, when trees fall down after a short period of time, about 18 mnths, they become very dry. They become really like a match stick. And they get up, you know, theres no more water pouring through, and they become very, very they just explode. They could explode. Stephen ahh, the age old question if a tree falls in a forest and theres no one around to see, can you convince reporters that it exploded . Trump doesnt believe the problem is Global Warming a all. We have to do a lot about Forest Management. Obviously Forest Management in california is very important. And now it extends to washington, it extends to oregon. There has to be good, strong Forest Management, which ive been talking about for three years with the state so hopefully theyll start doing that. Stephen yes, its all california, washington, and oregons fault because they wont manage their forests except theres one small problem the federal government owns nearly 58 of californias forestlands, while the state owns 3 . Its basically like complaining that your neighbor is doing a terrible job mowing your lawn. And when is he goo this ive gained . We want to work with you to recognize the change in climate and what it means to our forest and actually Work Together with that science. That science is going to be key. If we ignore the science and put our head in the sand and think its about vegetation management, we wont succeed together protecting californians. Okay. It will start getting cooler, you just watch. I wish science agreed with you. Well, i dont think science knows, actually. Stephen no, it knows. Just because you dont know doesnt mean the science doesnt know the science. Its like the nutrition facts on the box of oreo cookies. Just because i refuse to read it doesnt mean the serving size is one sleeve. And what a brave forecast. It will start getting colder. Its september yeah. I predict, by december, people will start bringing trees into their houses. Not a good idea. Those suckers can explode on ya. It shouldnt be a surprise that trump is downplaying the devastating fires out west. Hes spent the last six months ignoring a pandemic. And we now know that trump wasnt just misinformed or stupid, he was lying. Its all in a new book by my guest tonight, bob woodward. A man many people consider to be the Carl Bernstein of investigative journalism. The book is called rage. Its a follow up to 2018s fear. And its a prequel to 2022s hangry. In preparation for the book, trump sat down with woodward for 19 taped interviews, and they were very revealing. Not as much as chris evans, but still. For instance, back in february and march, trump was publicly comparing the virus to an average flu and saying it would go away by april, but listen to what he told woodward on february 7 it goes through air, bob. Thats how its passed. And so thats a very tricky one. Thats a very delicate one. Its also more deadly than your you know, your, even your strenuous flus. So this is deadly stuff. Stephen so donald trump knew in february that coronavirus was passed through the air, was much deadlier than the flu, then he lied about it, and 200,000 people died. So, maga really should stand for make american graves again. Then in march, trump explained to woodward why he lied. I wanted to i wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down. Yes. Because i dont want to create a panic. Stephen yes, he didnt want to create a panic and trumps brain has only two settings panic and lie. The book has a lot of other explosions. For instance, heres what trump told woodward about his relationship with turkish strongman recep erdogan i get along very well with erdogan, even though youre not supposed to, because everyone says, what a horrible guy. But, you know, for me it works out good. Its funny, the relationships i have, the tougher and meaner they are, the better i get along with them. Stephen for some reason, trump and evil people just click he shares a laugh with vladimir putin, he hangs out with jeffrey epstein, and his doubles partner is the demogorgon. Roger tel tell demo goringen. Good guy. Trump has a particularly special relationship with north korean dictator and man whose haircut was made for a man with a head half his size, kim jong un. In the book, trump described his chemistry with kim this way you meet a woman. In one second, you know whether or not its going to happen. as trump he walked in the room, and i knew immediately that kim was d. T. F dictator trumps friend. Not surprisingly, trump wasnt happy about rage, tweeting and moaning about the political hit job by rapidly fading bob woodward and his boring book. Wait a second. Boring book . Its 19 interviews of you talking. as trump bobs book is pathetic. Hours of interviews with some washedup reality show host who just blathers on like an idiot while letting 200,000 people die a preventable death . Boring of course, donald trump doesnt care if people die. Case in point, hes gone back to holding rallies. On saturday, trump scheduled one at the airport in reno, but was rejected because his rally would violate the states and local countys directives on public gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic. You know your rally is a bad idea when its deemed too stupid for reno, thats where you go when vegas is like, take it easy, man. Youre scaring our sex workers. So the rally was moved to another airport, in minden, nevada. The place you go when reno is like hey, take it easy, man, youre scaring our drifters trump himself even acknowledged that he shouldnt be allowed to have rallies. We call this a protest, because if you call it a protest youre allowed to have it. Stephen yeah, its a protest. When do we want it . Within fourteen days of this event which is at least a fresh take compared to the chant they actually used lock her up stephen are you kidding . Youve had four years, and you got no new material . The crowd should be screaming make an effort write a chant then on sunday, trump held an indoor rally at the warehouse of a Company Called xtreme manufacturing. A company that i presume makes snowboards out of dirt bikes. This was such a bad idea, one doctor even said, president trumps indoor rally in nevada is negligent homicide. Making trumps rally the dumbest political gathering since bill clinton accepted the democratic nomination at jurassic park. Most of the speech was the usual hot garbage, but he did debut some new comedy outreach to latino voters i call them latino, you know, i say what do you prefer . Its very interesting, some say call us latino. Stephen as trump and then they say uh, we dont sound like that. and i say maybe not, but that little chihuahua does. oquero your votes. Weve got a great show for you tonight. Bob woodward is here with exclusive, neverbeforeheard audio of donald trump. Stick around. Alright, everyone, we made it. My job is to help new homeowners who have turned into their parents. Im having a big lunch and then just a snack for dinner. So were using a speakerphone in the store. Is that a good idea . One of the ways i do that is to get them out of the home. Youre looking for a grout brush, this is garth, did he ask for your help . No, no. No. We all see it. We all see it. He has blue hair. Okay. Blue. Progressive cant protect you from becoming your parents, but we can protect your home and auto when you bundle with us. Keep it coming. You dont know him. And ask your doctor about biktarvy. Biktarvy is a complete, onepill, onceaday treatment used for hiv in certain adults. Its not a cure, but with one small pill, biktarvy fights hiv to hyou geto and stay undetectable. Thats when the amount of virus is so low it cannot be measured by a lab test. Research shows people who take hiv treatment every day and get to and stay undetectable can no longer transmit hiv through sex. Serious side effects can occur, including kidney problems and kidney failure. Rare, lifethreatening side effects include a buildup of lactic acid and liver problems. Do not take biktarvy if you take dofetilide or rifampin. Tell your doctor about all the medicines and supplements you take, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis. If you have hepatitis b, do not stop taking biktarvy without talking to your doctor. Common side effects were diarrhea, nausea, and headache. If youre living with hiv, keep loving who you are. And ask your doctor if biktarvy is right for you. If youre living with hiv, keep loving who you are. Good mormore treatment . Were going to try Something Different today. Hi awwww, so pretty. Whoo come on season 6, lets go s stephen that are, first show of season six. Jon lets go stephen thank you for being here for this long, strange trip. Jon oh, my goodness, a late show has been quite a show. This is the time were in. Whoo stephen give my love to your familiar ri. Jon yes. Stephen and all your loved ones. Jon of course. And, you know, likewise. Lets stay loved up, lets stay strong, come on, and push till november, common, everybody. Stephen thats right, be brave, everybody. Go vote. A little voting music . Got to go vote got to go vote you got to go vote stephen i hear a hit, baby jon batiste, everybody. Jon lay it on have a good one stephen joining me tonight is a twotime Pulitzer Prize winner whose name is synonymous with investigative journalism. His latest book on the Trump Administration is called rage. Please welcome bob woodward bob, thank you so much for being here. Thank you. Stephen please, let me get a word in edgewise here, bob. Dont drown me with words no, this is your second book on the Trump Administration. You were here a couple of years ago for the book fear. Thats right. Stephen this ones fear, the next one is rage. Whats the next one called, chaos . He would have to be reelect ford me to do another book, and we dont know. He could win. Stephen he could, bob, that is exactly true. He proved that the last time. Yes. Stephen okay. The interview is off to a happy start. Okay. The last time i asked you why people talk to you, bob. Id like to ask you again, why do you think trump spoke to you this time because he didnt talk to you last time. Thats right, and he regretted it, he said. And i think some people told he denounced the first book fear and said, oh, im a democratic operative, and its not true. And i think some people who work for him said, mr. President , it turns out its all true, and they told him that i would not put words in his mouth, i would let him i would give him a fair shake. And then rage, i think 15 to 20 are quotes from him from my nine hours of interviews with him. Stephen even though his staff may have said to him that bob woodward will give you a good shake, one of the aspects of fallout of this book, because its not a glowing portrait of the president here, spoiler alert to everybody. No, it is not. Stephen even though he has not read it yet. I have two copies. I have the pretty one here and then i have the one that i actually read and the cover burst into flames at one point and i had to throw it away. It can be pretty scathing at times, even from you directly. And some of his staff are basically throwing each other under the bus and saying, i dont know who let him speak to bob woodward, i wouldnt have let him speak to bob woodward. Did anyone try to stop you from speaking to the president . No. No. What happens, and we know this and this is part of the portrait of him, hes a oneman band. He decides, its the impulse, and, in a way, i think, around the white house, he doesnt drink. I think thats true. Hes the night prowler, and hes looking for something to do, and he epix up the phone, and and he epix up the and he epix up the phone and calls people. I called to him about nine times and seven times he initiated. I had to run around the hopes with one of those olympus tape recorders in case he called. One time he called and my wife elsa picked up and he said, is bob there . And she said, who is this . And he said, donald trump. And she said, oh, okay, ill get him. Stephen nixon, to drop a name youre familiar with, was famous for calling people in the middle of the night, sometimes when hed had a cocktail or two. Is there anything about trump wanting to talk to you thats reminiscent of nixons own insecurities and the way he would call people in the middle of the night . Well, i had a great advantage here over ten months, all of those interviews, i could prepare questions, i could think about what was going on, try to dig into because, in a very interesting way, which i did not fully appreciate because, normally, president s i wrote books about either wouldnt talk to me or would do one interview with the press secretary sitting there with an igniter light if it got out of hand. And, so, this was a full engagement, and th the microphoe is really like a microscope. I didnt realize tha its not jtords. If you read the words, they have one meaning, and if you actually do it in a way where you are you know, youre letting somebody go on and he tends to go on and on, you are looking at something more than the words because there is an attitude or an energy or disgust, like when i asked him about the black lives Matter Movement and whether he understood as a privileged white person like myself, if he comprehended the anger and pain that black people feel, and he just he just said, oh, wow, you should hear yourself, you drank the koolaid, scorned me, ridiculed me. On paper thats one thing. When you hear the voice, its much larger than the words on the page. Stephen well, speaking of which, you have brought a clip for us to hear tonight, and this is we call this an exclusive, in the business. Yes. Stephen okay. So lets blow the lid off of this. Can you set up what this clip is about . This is the one where hes in the oval office. Stephen yes, sir. And npril, and he tells me what happens when somebody sneezes, and we all live in a world where there are people who sneeze, and if you have the audio of it and isfiste played, its quite revealing. Stephen okay. Do we have this . Can we play this . Yes. Stephen hit it, jim. And, bob, its so easily trance missable you wouldnt believe it. I know. Mean, you can be in the room. I was in the white house a couple of days ago, meeting of ten people in the oval office, and a guy sneezed innocently, not a horrible, you know, just a sneeze. Yeah. The entire room bailed out, okay, including me, by the way. Stephen here hes making light there at the end, but at the heart of that is something extraordinarily shocking. Yes. And, i mean, here hes saying because, you know, hes downplaying the virus. So hes in the oval office, someone sneezes, and he bails out. He goes running out. Last night in nevada, when he was going through that rally, i mean, god knows how many people were there all packing to. I wonder if someone sneeds in the front row that trump would bail out again and get out of the way. Anyway, this is too serious a matter. We really as you know, 190,000 people have died, and my reporting shows that he knew back in january, january 28t january 28th in an extraordinary meeting, maybe one of the most extraordinary meetings in the oval office ive recorded on for about 50 years, and that is when his National Security advisor tells him that the virus is going to be the biggest National Security threat to your presidency, and then the deputy who worked in china for seven years for the wall street journal gives specifics aboutwy it is ramitted, andits extraort , elected to i once asked him whats the job of the president , and he said the job is to protect the people. I agree. I think most people n country would in this country would, and he failed to protect the people, he failed to find a way to tell the truth. Stephen bob, we have to take a quick break. But stick around, everybody. Well be right back with more with the awe for of rage, mr. Bob woodward. Family were taking a chance family like birds of a feather family take off your shoes and dance wanted to introduce you guys. [sliced apple] we already met. [lemon] oh yeah. [whispers] it was delicious. Meanappl [lemon] are we fighting . [lemon] oh my god this is our first fight. Wowww [lemon] oh my god this is our first fight. A mastersdgren, youin chemical engineering. , and youre technically a genius. And it appears youre quite the investor. I like to trade. Well, Td Ameritrade has pros ready if you need help, say talking through a new strategy. Just in case things, you know, get a little rocky . Im sorry on the upside i think thats waterproof. Maybe not. You can take advantage of 0 preventive dental care. Wow uhhuh 0 copays on preventive dental care and the nations largest medicare dental network. Its time to take advantage. And the nations largest medicare dental network. Knowinits hard. Re is hard. Eliminate who you are not first, and youre going to find yourself where you need to be. The race is never over. The journey has no port. The adventure never ends, because we are always on the way. Weve learned a lot more about the covid19 virus. Its real. And its dangerous. So, on behalf of all of us working on the front lines, please take it seriously. We do know how to keep you and your loved ones safe. Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Stay six feet apart. Do your best to stay out of crowded spaces. And get a flu shot, its even more important this year. We can do this. If we do it together. Stephen hey, everybody, were back with Pulitzer Prizewinning author of the book rage with bob woodward. Trump told you on february 7 that the virus is more deadly than even the strenuous flus meaning the worst seasons we have in the united states. So february 26, less than three weeks later, he says to the public, this is a flu, this is like a flu. He actually says its like just an average flu that we have. How does it feel to know some people have criticized you and said why didnt bob woodward tell us what the truth was here . I believe that thats, a, not necessary because we actually knew what the truth was and, if you watched the president , youve got a real sense that he was lying merely to cover up and try to save sort of the reputation of his administration. I dont think that was secret knowledge that the president was sharing with you. What is is striking is well, actually it was. Stephen it was. Because its proof. And, see, i thought he was talking about the the virus in china. This is way back in february when no one was actually talking about the virus at all, and he had just talked to chinese president xi the night before and trump was talking, telling me about this. And, so, i tho and if you look at the newspapers and the network coverage, all the coverage in that period is about the virus in china. So then, in march, when it eploded, it became very clear to me, oh, yes, trump was he knew that it was easily transmitted, he knew that people who did not have symptoms could pass it, but i thought hes talking about china. Stephen but by february 26, unless im mistaken, by february 26 in that press conference hes actually talking about what effect that virus might have in the united states. Hes not talking about china. Thats why hes saying its like an average flu we might have here. Yes, but hes not coming clean with the knowledge he got at the end of january. Stephen very much so. O im going along tnk is iabout cna, an it was until mayt iiscoua, which, as i say, most i begin the book with that meeting on january 28th because that is the moment when the people who know the most tell the president of the united states, we are going to have a pandemic coming. Its going to be like the 1918 spanish flu that killed 675,000 people in this country. Stephen why do you think he always bets the under on this virus . Because hes just done it again. Hes mocking people for wearing masks. Hes still essentially saying theres nothing to be afraid of here. Yes, and stephen he constantly bets the under and loses the bet every time but keeps betting the under. Why do you think what do you think, observing a politician, do you think he thinks the upside is of that. He doesnt understand the country he leads. When you get the truth, somebody comes to you and says, stephen, you know, theres a hurricane coming, we better you going to put some boards on the windows, youre going to go in the basement and so forth. Well, he got that warning, and he did not tell the truth to the american people, and when the history books about this are written and its all put bnnedeailure,le are going to bi the basic failure to lead and say, hey, this is whats going on, guys. Stephen bob, we have to take one more break, but well be right back with more bob woodward, everybody. O me than hiv. Theres my career, my cause, my choir. Im a work in progress. Try a clean plantbased burger for a change. Stephen hey, everybody. Were back with the author of rage, bob woodward. During the palm sunday call with donald trump, you pleaded with during his impeachment or the leadup to the impeachment, you said, let me give you advice from my years of experience, just apologize. What does it feel like to turn from someone who is essentially a witness to history and someone who gives context and sort of coal lates events for us to understand them, and somebody sitting in the oval office trying to advise the president of the best course of action because that doesnt seem in your job description. No, because im trying to be careful. Im saying that i spent a lot of time, what would full mobilization against the virus mean . And i had 12 to 14 areas like testing, international cooperation, and i went through them with trump, and i said what are you doing about these things . And then, at the end, he said,d . Y heaieao me. He said, good, thank you. And then, of course, we never had full mobilization. Stephen do you have all of these conversations recorded, even yes, i recorded 19 conversations with him in the last ten, eleven months, and its nine hours and 41 minutes. Stephen is there any chance you will release it like a jazz album or something . Because i would listen to all of it. There are lots of things he says, we know this, that just dont check out, that arent true. Stephen wha what . Why didnt you put that in the book . You buried the lead, bob i did, i put it in and i show it. And hes given his say. A month ago, he called me out of the blue, one of these calls, you know, and the books done and he said, can we get something in the book we , like were coauthors, can we get something in the book about the israeli u. A. E. Peace agreement, and thats a big deal. I said, look, the book is closed, and i said the book is going to be tough, and i make some judgments youre not going to like. And he asked about it a little bit more, and then he said, well, but the stock markets doing well. Stephen well, did you tell him what your judgment was . Did you tell him that you said hes the wrong man for the job . No, i did not. I told him its going to be tough and i made dgments, and i knew i mean, he could read between the lines and at the end of the conversation stephen im not sure he can read, bob. Yeah, well, listen, he understood because, at the end, he said, well, looks like i didnt get you on this book, ill get you on the next one. And an hour and a hal lat tweeted out that the bob woodward book is going to be fake. Stephen well, it feels pretty real for a fake book, bob, ive got to say, and the recordings sound pretty real to me. They are real. And its a walk its an opportunity to enter the president s mind because we deal with all the issues and his attitudes and history and cato bly honesixon, nixon never and itsual to have this opportunity. I thanked him. I said thank you. He said, im busy, ive got to go talk to the generals, theyre waiting. I said, i appreciate it, but here the list of my questions are, and he would stay on the phone for 20 minutes or 40 minutes. So this is our president. Stephen well, bob, thank you for coming on. Thank you for the book. It is fascinating. I wont say its entirely surprising, his behavior, but it is so shocking to be so clearly told the story of how he has blown so many opportunities to d the right thing. And that way, the book is heartbreaking, because you see the good people around him or the wellintentioned people around him, trying to do the right thing, and you see the president repeatedly making the wrong moral choice or making selfish choices or choosing the lie over the truth to protect himself when he has given a tremendous toolkit of powers of the presidency to do the right thing for the rest of us. It could not be laid out in a clearer, more fascinating and as i say more heartbreaking way. So thank you so much, thank you so much for the book. Thank you stephen the book, rage, is available tomorrow. Bob woodward, everybody well be right back a performance by luke combs. These are both is surprisingly filling.
